not to over analyse a song choice for a tv show but
using ‘cats in the cradle’ by Ugly Kid Joe for Klaus’s immortality training death montage was fucking perfect
the song is a warning against putting ones career before spending time with their loved ones/children, which is certainly applicable to how Reginald perceives all his children as merely a means to an end
like,, looking at the opening lyrics
My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
there’s firstly the fact that Klaus and the others really did just arrive the other day, coupled with the irony of the fact it was very much not the usual way. Neither their og births (which were miraculous conceptions), nor their arrival in this time line (via time travel) are in any way usual
the line
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
certainly fits Klaus (with all his trauma, the flashbacks to younger him in the mausoleum, the fact his powers manifest in a blue glow) and Reginald (who has a secret base on the moon, who is literally an alien from space)
finally, the repetition of of the line
I'm gonna be like you, dad
which then turns into
My boy was just like me
feels relevant, not because Klaus and Reginald are all that similar in personality or morals or anything, but in regards to the fact this song over lays a training montage for Klaus learning to master his powers over immortality, meanwhile Reginald himself is immortal, what with having lived centuries and the lack of ageing and lived through multiple apocalypses.
It also reflects the way Klaus, despite everything Reginald has done to him, still decides to put his trust and faith in this new Reginald. Despite the abuse he still craves Reginald’s approval and attention, which this Reginald takes advantage of to manipulate him

cats in the cradle bothers me for the obvious reason that the song is sad and bittersweet, (yes, the father should’ve prioritized spending time with his son, and the son turned out just like him: too busy to spend anytime with family) but there’s this line in the beginning about “planes to catch and bills to pay” and I know in the context of the song that’s probably just the father making excuses for not spending time with his son, but it could just as easily not be an excuse. he’s forced to make a living and make money presumably so he can support his son, the very person who he doesn’t have time for. and it bothers me because this is an unfortunate reality for a lot of families. it doesn’t matter how much people try to prioritize those in their life or what matters to them. there’s never going to be enough time to spend because capitalism is pulling us away from them.
