So Wisp, what's this about the Catrats being in love?
Tumblr media
Let me preface this all by saying that Lucasta and Kudo are very good friends.
This isn't me being facetious by the way, it's a fundamental part (to me, because I'm delusional) of their 10+ year slowburn. All this elder dragon nonsense might have forced them into proximity, but it's NOT what's keeping them together.
The catrats' interests overlap; Lu's rune crafting and Kudo's research into practical magitech often go hand in hand. Kudo admires (and honestly envies) Lu's tendency towards out of the box thinking, and thinks she's brilliant. Lu, meanwhile, knows that Kudo is a certified genius and thinks that absolutely sick, and values his insight.
And it goes further than that. Kudo appreciates how kind and caring Lu is (even though he worries she sometimes goes overboard at the cost of her own comfort). Lu finds Kudo very sweet and selfless (even though him doing things for HER instead of the other way 'round makes her antsy). Kudo appreciates her unwavering support, Lu appreciates his seemingly infinite patience with her intricacies. They're similar in many ways and perfectly complement each other when they aren't.
They're both shut-ins that hate leaving the house and just want to talk about their projects together, basically.
What else?
Well, turns out they're broken in the same way too.
Kudo's destiny was never his own to write. He was going to be Kudu or he was going to be Snaff; if anything, being Kudo was more of a temporary state of being. A blank slate for other people to mold. He isn't sure there's anything to him. At least, nothing good.
Lu was born to serve. Her Legion, her father, whatever mate was picked out for her. Lu wasn't afforded the chance to find out who she was because it didn't matter. What she's supposed to be is useful. That's it.
Neither of the catrats have a solid sense of self. Different circumstances, but same core issue. And becoming commanders at such young ages certainly didn't help. They can't see who they are deep down.
But they can see each other. And they love what they see.
Lucasta and Kudo might not be sure in their own identities, but they recognize the other as clear as day. There is an unspoken understanding. It sucks, but there is a certain amount of comfort in having someone by your side that's just as lost and confused as you are.
They can't see what the other sees in them, but they do paint such a beautiful picture of it.
So when does this all happen?
Well, that depends on how you define "when" and "happen". And "this". Arguably the first time their blossoming romance starts to bubble to the surface is during HoT.
Where they're fighting for basically half the expac.
The specifics of the fight are for another lore post, but it culminates in a big blowout argument in Tarir and ends with Kudo pleading with Lu to share her burdens (both commander-related and emotional) because he cares about her dammit! Lu can't put her finger on it, but she starts to see Kudo in a slightly different light after that.
LWS3 is when things become much more obvious, because that's when the crush Kudo's unknowingly been nursing reaches its peak. He's still oblivious, of course, but he does recognize that SOMETHING is happening to him. Why is he so frustrated and jealous when Lu gets flirted with? Why does he keep staring at her when she isn't doing anything? Why is his heart racing? Is he dying? Must be.
PoF is THE BIG ONE. Arguably the most important catrat expac just by virtue of how it affects their relationship. Kudo dies. But you knew that I'm sure.
But he dies FOR LU. And as she cradles his lifeless body 300 realizations hit her at once, but they all lead to the same conclusion: she loves him. She loves him and now he's gone. It took her this long and now it's too late.
Kudo meanwhile is having his fun little field trip in the ghost zone and comes to the same realization at roughly the same time as Lu. Sacrificing yourself will do that I guess.
Okay so what's the hold up?
Me. :} Just kidding. Sort of.
You'll notice that PoF takes place halfway through the story and as of EoD they're STILL not together, what gives?
The problem is twofold.
Lu, ever reluctant to share her negative feelings at the risk of being a burden, had started to open up to Kudo after that fight in HoT. By PoF and onward he is her emotional anchor and confidant. It felt so good to not have to hide or lock up her feelings in front of someone. But that's also sort of the issue. Lu is being open but she still feels like a burden when she does it. Every time she comes to him for comfort she feels so so guilty to put him in that situation. Like a liability.
To Lu, telling Kudo how she feels is yet another of her problems he'll have to shoulder, on top of everything else he's dealing with. It's selfish. And she's not even useful to him, has nothing to offer; why would he ever love her? Not to mention the whole "different species" thing.
Kudo has his own laundry list of reasons why he's not confessing to her either. Most pressing though is that time he almost killed her. He still feels so agonizingly guilty over the whole incident years later that it makes him sick. Haunts his dreams. In what world could she possibly feel the same? He doesn't deserve her love.
So they're both stupid, basically.

馃寳 fluff or angst?馃挄 favorite ship to write?馃弳fic youre most proud of?馃崉how do you get yourself in the mood to write?馃挕what inspires your fic ideas?馃帳fave line in a fic you wrote?
*cracks knuckles* dats a lot lol
馃寳 - Primarily fluff. While a lot of what I've posted has been kinda angsty so far, 80% of my WiPs are domestic fluff.
馃挄 - I don't really have a proper favorite, but I'm enjoying writing Rathma/Imperius right now.
馃弳 - Hell Raisers. It's probably the first multi-chapter I've ever laid out, written, and completed (even if it is part of a bigger series). Also I just love me some Inarius being an emotionally-constipated dad.
馃崉- It's easiest in the morning, after everyone else has left the house. I have this clunky-ass old laptop from like 2008, this thing weighs 6lbs and has a CD drive I love it very very much even if its battery has been dead for years and it needs to stay plugged in. I find a nice quiet spot to curl up with it and just. Write.
I've written entire chapters of Cantankerous in one sitting on that thing. I think it's bcuz its keyboard is so satisfying.
馃挕- A lot of it comes from what I want and what I'm feeling at the moment. Also spite that Diablo lore is so lackluster sometimes. If they're not going to play with their cool toys then I will Damnit! A lot of it is a curiosity. I want to see these characters interact with their families. With obstacles. With a warm cup of coffee.
Cantankerous is a found-family story about someone whose been isolated from their community, feels fucked over by the system, and is very very angry at the world. It was started in January of 2021.
Hell Raisers may be a complimentary story, but I'd been grappling with some Feelings About Parents at that time.
Solid State was...a found-family story about someone with who just wants to finally rest, and be loved, and was written throughout the latter half of 2020.
Both of these are pretty direct reactions to the pandemic, and how its been affecting my life/how I feel. I may not be able to physically fight COVID on behalf of the planet, but Rathma sure can fight his mother on behalf of his.
Fluffy Angels wasn't a proper fic, but who-boy if that mess wasn't just a manifestation of my depression lol
Also other fics. Other fics are very inspiring. My Imp/Rath fic started bcuz I was reading a very juicy Fox/Vos Fic and thought 'damn I wish I could see my favorites like this...Oh wait! I can write!'. And thus CatRat was born.
馃帳- Also answered Here, so I'll do one from Hell Raisers.
It occurred to Inarius that his child was trying to eat him, and technically, was succeeding too.
- Chapter 1 of Hell Raisers
Remember that time Rathma took a bite out of Inarius and got away with it? Classic.

I have never explicitly put it into words but Kudo's love for Lu is almost religious in nature
Her affection and praise feels like redemption. His bloodstained hands aren't as unsightly when they're interlaced with hers.
She radiates light. She is light. Enthralling him like a moth, guiding him down the proper path.
Everything he does is for her. His purpose, his conviction. It's all her.
He just sort of wishes she'd stop leaving the lab a mess.

Catrat Lore 0: before the personal story (Kudo's side)
Next Post
Tumblr media
So, in the catrat-verse, Kudu is Snaff's son, which creates about as much family drama as you'd expect given what eventually happens.
Kudo was basically as doomed from the start to be an evil scientist as a rat possibly could be. By the time of his birth his father was already a well respected Overseer (and popular, let's say) and expectations were high.
Kudo and his sister (the similarly creatively named Kuda) are raised with the intent of becoming overseers themselves one day, with their education being tailored for it, but our anxious ratboy is simply not built for the kind of morally bankrupt activities the Inquest requires. He also, PROOOOBABLY unrelated, starts accidentally lighting things on fire. Weird.
But luckily Kudo is one of the Inquest's star nepo babies, and is able to avoid most of the morally repugnant work until he's old enough to become a bonafide scientist and get a lab adjacent to his father's. He develops an interest dragon energy research similar to his father, who ends up using some of Kudo's research to further his own projects. His specific focus was practical uses; similar to methods seen in pre-surface Asuran societies, and it required a lot of test subjects. And his father was more than happy to oblige, delivering as many dragon minions as requested. Kudo never questioned where they came from. Dragon minions are everywhere, surely they'd just been collecting them from the outside?
This span of time was probably the proudest Kudu had ever been of his son. But is wasn't meant to last.
Kudo, on the cusp of his 18th birthday and being promoted, is given a tour by his father of the parts of his lab that are usually off limits. And, to his horror, learns that the test subjects he had been requesting hadn't entered the lab that way. Kudu has been forcibly corrupting innocents this whole time, and Kudo had been unwittingly contributing with both his research AND his "supply" requests.
This is, obviously, a lot to take in. Kudo had convinced himself that he could be in the Inquest and still keep his hands relatively clean, but they had been irrevocably bloodstained due to his naivety. So he proceeds down the only course of action his guilt-ridden mind can conceive of: he has to leave.
This is easier said than done. The Inquest isn't simply an organization one puts their two week notice in for. Kudo, in the dead of night, stages a containment breach and skitters out in the resulting chaos.
He runs. Past the raging experiments. Past the guards. All the way out of the lab and through Metrica until he reaches Rata Sum. He crumples at Zojja's doorstep and begs and pleads with her to take him in.
She is...hesitant. He is Kudu's son, after all. But then again, what better way to spite her rival? And he's also Snaff's grandson, there might still be some hope for him.
Kudo is more than fine with this arrangement. His life has never been his own to live, not really. The weight of two conflicting legacies hang over him, and he's worried that if left to his own devices he'll become a carbon copy of his father. If Zojja is confident she can course correct him and turn him into Snaff 2.0 he's completely on board.
Unfortunately for Kudo, he's Kudo.

HOO BOY SO
I plan on going into a lot more detail once I actually stop being lazy and work on that chronological catrat story retelling more but. The jist is that:
Sorrow's Embrace is the first dungeon you see Kudu in. Prior to his ourple-ing. In the catratverse this takes place I BELIEVE after the first Claw Island section and like, after the field trip with Trahearne. So at this point Kudo is like "my ass does NOT belong here" (but more. Kudo-ish). He is being thrust into things he did not fucking sign up for and he is in mortal peril like 24/7 now which sucks. He's just a little guy.
AND NOW his dad's here. The first time he's seen him in like a year or more probably since his great escape from the Inquest, and Kudu can smell the blood in the water. He does his normal bantering and then homes in on Kudo.
Lu steps in and tells him to quit that shit because Kudo is her friend. Mistake.
Kudu's like, "Oh? You think so? Let's see."
He tells Kudo that they BOTH know that he's in way over his head. He doesn't belong here. He's a scientist for Alchemy's sake, not a fighter. And are those swords? Kudo, please, put those down before you hurt yourself.
You're not a hero, boy. You never were. But his father is the forgiving type. He can come back. Like it never happened. Go back to his comfortable life as a scientist and forget all that Zhaitan nonsense.
All he has to do is solidify his loyalty. Kudu hands him his rifle and points at Lu. All he has to do is put down that cat that's convinced herself that she's his friend.
And Kudo, our sweet little rat boy, sick with fear and anxiety, shaking like a leaf, considers it however briefly. He's 18 and almost died like 10 times in the past year. He already thinks he's irredeemable, why IS he playing hero?
But he hesitates. He angles the rifle down. He can't do it. So Kudu shoves him off the platform and says he always knew his son was a disappointment. He's free to die like the rest of them.
After the fact Kudo is like, inconsolable. Guilty as all hell. And to make it worse Lu of all people is telling him it's okay. She knew he wasn't going to do it.
She didn't. But that moment basically solidified his devotion to her (platonic, but eventually not).

Catrat Lore 2: Initiation
Previous post
Tumblr media
Wherein the cat and rat go on a field trip.
Kudo attends the world's most awkward reunion tour in Lion's Arch with Zojja and stops her from attempting to strangle Eir with her little rat hands. He feels like he should also be mad at Eir given Snaff was his grandfather but cannot get himself to do it.
So Kudo's formally introduced to his Priory mentor Sieran, who says she absolutely can't wait to meet him and the other new novice. It'll be cherry!
Wait, other new novice?
And right on cue, in stumbles Lucasta. She's sorry she's late, this is her first time in Lion's Arch so she got lost and also almost fell into the sea. She gives Kudo a little wave of acknowledgement and he awkwardly returns it. He is. Less than thrilled with this development.
Sieran, as we know, goes on a little detour before they show up at the Priory, and Kudo is starting to think maybe he got the wrong impression about what the order does. At least the charr is protecting him (and better with a pistol than he is given his piss-poor aim).
While the location of the sword the dredge took is being determined, the catrats have a chance to settle in a bit. And as luck would have it, they're roommates. Of course. Kudo is envisioning everything that could possibly happen with this arrangement and is already dreading it.
At this point Kudo knows next to nothing about Lu other than that she is apparently Professor Gorr's apprentice (and his daughter? Somehow?) and also very scary looking. He receives quite a shock during the kerfuffle with Sieran's sword containment experiment when Lu tells Gixx she can help stabilize the amalgamation their new mentor made and then does the dang thing. Apparently this charr is some kind of artificer too, how novel.
The catrats aren't promoted to Explorers at the end of their first mission, but they ARE given a good night's rest which is even better, arguably.

Sometimes I think about how like, Zojja's dialogue at the end of the Crucible of Eternity seems to imply Kudu was VERY important to the Inquest
Tumblr media
And at the start she says this
Tumblr media
And then there's this that I found earlier today
Tumblr media
And in catrat canon Kudo is explicitly being brought up to be an Overseer like his father. So Kudo very nearly escaped being like, the executive assistant of evil science incorporated. I guess.
And you can bet that he never stops thinking about that.

Catrat Lore 1: First Meeting
Tumblr media

Next Post
Wherein the cat and rat are introduced.
So, neither Lu or Kudo go through the early asura Personal Story missions. The first "canon" one they are a part of is the Rescue Researcher chapter.
So by this point, Lu's 17, and has been living with Professor Gorr as his adopted daughter for 10 years. She is constantly applying to (and getting denied by) Dynamics and in the meantime is working with Gorr as his apprentice for his dragon research.
Lu's made incredible strides since she had escaped from Flame. With her dad's support and newfound freedom, she was able to explore interests she hadn't even known she had. By this point she's quite the accomplished artificer for her age, due in part to her curious magic situation (which turned out to be useful for much more than making her an attractive bartering chip) and her...creative ideas. The locals might occasionally side-eye her and she has trouble squeezing through some doors, but she feels much more at home in Rata Sum with the Asura than she ever did in Flame.
Kudo (now officially 18), meanwhile, is busy hiding out in Zojja's lab as her apprentice. She's initially strict with him, with incredibly high standards, but he does end up slowly growing on her. Probably because of his...kicked puppy aura. He is, despite being prone to bouts of anxiety and easily frightened, quick on the uptake and works very efficiently. The perfect apprentice if he didn't fly out of his chair whenever he hears an unfamiliar noise.
So, Zojja drags Kudo out into Rata Sum to watch Professor Gorr's presentation and swap plans with the order reps. He's nervous, of course, because he's always nervous but ALSO he knows he's got the Inquest's biggest target on his back.
Gorr forgets his notes. Lu chides him because she DEFINITELY TOLD HIM (she didn't she also forgot) and he tells her to wait there while he goes home real fast to get them. Kudo is vaguely curious why there's a charr at an academic conference but doesn't think too much of it at the time. (Kudo that's your future wife be nice)
Except!! Oh no!! Apparently Gorr died??? Lu is totally calm and collected and normal and definitely isn't panicking/distraught/grief-stricken on the inside. Zojja, Kudo, and the order reps discuss this shocking turn of events and express their doubts. Kudo, at Zojja's behest, agrees to search Gorr's lab for his documentation. The group splits up, leaving Kudo to make the trip alone. Unfortunately for him, keen charr ears have been listening in to his conversation.
For once, Kudo's paranoia about being followed is justified. He glances over his shoulder by pure chance and is greeted with the sight of a charr approaching him at concerning speeds on all fours. He runs. Or at least, he tries. Kudo is not the Alchemy's most coordinated soldier at this point in his life. He takes a few hurried steps and trips on a slightly raised floor tile. He can hear the clack of the charr's claws gaining on him. Before he can right himself the figure towers above him. He is going to die.
"Oh jeez sorry. Are you okay? Here." She grips him by the collar and gently rights him like a child would a fragile doll. Kudo is visibly shaking by this point.
It turns out that this charr (who Kudo cannot remember the name of because the blood was still rushing to his ears) wants in on whatever it is him and his group are planning. She's Gorr's apprentice you see, and she has a vested interest in finding out what happened. Also she's really sorry she scared him, seriously didn't mean it. Is he okay? He doesn't look okay. She can take him to a medic if he needs it.
The rest of the mission goes relatively normally with the exception that now the two of them are there and Kudo is basically afraid for his life at all times. There is some distrust at first when Lu introduces herself to Zojja and the order reps (and some scolding from Zojja to Kudo about "letting strangers in on our plans") but she's deemed harmless. Kudo is flummoxed that everyone is just accepting that this charr is Gorr's apprentice. Like yeah she showed up with him but?? Hello?? This is a giant cat??
And then things only get harder for Kudo to comprehend when they find Gorr alive and he starts calling Lu his daughter. This has been the weirdest week of his life so far.
Kudo is put on the spot and told by Zojja to pick an order to join, and reasons with him that he'll be safer with one of them than in Rata Sum PLUS he'll be helping her with her long term goals to make connections to stop the elder dragons. And stopping the elder dragons is something Snaff tried to do, right Kudo?
So Kudo picks the Priory because he's a loser nerd.
As in canon, Gorr is put under Whispers protection after the whole debacle, and he urges Lu to join one of the orders since she, too, has received an invitation. Her first instinct is to go with him, but he assures her that she can pick whichever she thinks would be the best fit. He's her father, he'll never be too far away.
Lu, with some hesitation, agrees to join the Priory later that night.
Kudo goes to sleep assuming he'll never see that weird charr again.

Catrat Lore 0.5: before the personal story (Lu's side)
Previous Post
Next Post
Tumblr media
21 years before the start of the personal story, the Ash Legion Shade warband is wiped out during a mission with the exception of their gadgeteer Viatrix Shademaker.
Adrift without her band, she goes AWOL, picking up odds jobs in Lion's Arch to fill the void until the Order of Whispers snatches her up.
A few years into her position as Creator she volunteers for an extended undercover mission deep in Flame territory to keep an eye on Baelfire's movements. While there she catches wind of a shaman vying for more influence and his...questionable experiment. And Vi is willing to do anything for the good of the mission.
Lucasta is born to Viatrix and this shaman, Oryen, not long after.
Life is as emotionally damaging as one would expect for a female charr in the Flame Legion. It's drilled into Lu's head basically from the jump that her purpose is to serve. She will cook. She will clean. She will bare cubs when she comes of age. Her own personal needs and wants aren't even secondary, they're quaternary.
And it quickly becomes apparent that Lu is perhaps in an even worse situation than usual. Her sire's "experiment" involves the breeding of new and novel magical abilities, and Lu just happened to be one of the few "major successes". She's now a bartering chip. A prominent data point. And when she grows up, is expected to produce many more data points for Oryen's grand project.
That's what she was born to do, to be useful.
Despite her best attempts, Vi cannot protect her daughter from the deluge of comments and expectations that are thrown her way. There are some things, Vi realizes, that she will not do for the good of a mission. So she begins to add basic Ash Legion stealth to their secret tinkering lessons.
When Lu is 7 years old, Viatrix decides it's finally time. She can't leave, but that doesn't mean her daughter can't have a better life. She makes contact with a fellow undercover Whispers agent and plans Lu's escape. Vi sends her off with the agent, a male charr posing as a Flame scout, tells Lu to remember her lessons, and promises they will see each other again soon.
Vi is lying.
Just a few steps from freedom, at the very edge of Flame territory, Lu and her escort are stopped by a patrol. When the agent cannot talk his way out of their predicament he urges Lu to run. And she does, stopping only to conceal herself in the thick underbrush that dot the landscape when she hears movement (just like her mother taught her).
She's close to collapsing from exhaustion when she finally reaches an asuran gate. She slumps to the floor and waits for her mother to show up. Because surely, she will show up. After nearly half a day of waiting, it begins to dawn on Lucasta that she is now completely alone. Nobody is coming for her.
Lu is miserable, hungry, and terrified, but more importantly she's broke and can't afford the fee to use the gate. She slips into one of the crates on a passing merchant's wagon and ends up not in the Black Citadel as intended, but Rata Sum. It's not long after that Professor Gorr finds the cub huddled in a corner, crying, and takes her in.
After a few months of wariness, Lu begins to adjust to her new life with the asura. She's given side eyes from onlookers, but Gorr provides her with the kind of love and attention that she had only received from her mother previously. And! She's allowed to do things! Things she never was able to do before! To learn! To create! To ask questions (and BOY does she have a lot of questions)! Lu definitely begins to flourish in her new environment, but that doesn't mean the lessons she learned in Flame don't still have their hooks in her.
Lu thinks she's unaffected. And she certainly tries to act like it. But her worldview and sense of self were fundamentally altered. She doesn't have to serve as she once was expected to, and now she can tinker and invent! Isn't that useful of her?
As she grows up, Lu wears a carefully manufactured mask of her own design, and most of the time she isn't even aware of it. She has an expertly cultivated version of herself she shows to people, even people she cares about. She wouldn't want to burden them with negativity. It's not about her. It was never about her.

During the battle for the Jade Sea, someone - maybe Yao or Min - asked over the comms:
"Sooo, what's going on between the commanders?"
Which might as well have been the Tyrian equivalent of @everyone because suddenly
Tumblr media
A chorus of voices erupt from the comms.
"You don't want to know."
"It's a long story."
"Think of the cheesiest holodrama you know, now make it twice as long. No wait! Thrice!"
"Ah, you mean Tyria's greatest love story of the generation?"
"I'm not sure, but I support them!"
"I've got 200 gold on them getting together before the end of the year."
"Kinda wish they'd just kiss already, it's getting hard to watch."
Etc.
A voice cuts in, muffled by the din of battle.
"You do all realize Lucasta and I are still on the comms, yes?"
"Yes, and? Turn them off."
"Yeah this conversation is none of your business."

Lu prefers her wacky ranged weapons, be it her pistols or flamethrower or mortar (a girl has to be prepared). She's not exactly melee combat trained but could theoretically throw a hammer around and cause some damage. She refuses to touch swords because as much as she loves Kudo (platonically and...otherwise 馃憖) the last time he offered to teach her it was a goddamn disaster. He's very. Picky.
Kudo LOVES his swords. Obsessed. Literally collects and displays them on his walls. It wasn't always this way. In the Inquest he was trained on firearms but Kudo has GOD AWFUL aim and Lu refuses to let him handle one in the current day. He was taught swordplay by Lu's half brother Gaius during their time in the Priory and continued his lessons up until the fight with Zhaitan. But that doesn't mean he stopped practicing; for all his flaws Kudo IS a very diligent student, and started obsessively studying techniques on his own. He's a genuinely impressive swordsman now, and he's not afraid to get a little egotistical about it.
Food! Lu's a good cook and is willing to try anything but doesn't particularly like bugs (which is unfortunate since it tends to feature in a lot of Asuran meals). She loves meat as most charr would buy likes to get fancy with it if she can.
Kudo is the one that ate the poison-cured bacon (out of scientific curiosity) so I think that answers just about any questions about him.
The catrats are homebodies (yes, even Lu!) So their favorite places are like. Their home. Their shared workspace. Outside of that they both grew really fond of the Labyrinthine Cliffs so that's where they've. Parked their airship most of the time. So it's their home also.
SotO spoilers under the cut
SO, Kudo's basically got no family anymore. His mom vanished into the Mists, his grandfather's been Kralk'd, he killed his own dad, and his sister and him aren't on speaking terms to put it lightly (the Specimen Lab meta in Sandswept was incredibly awkward for him).
He's formed his own little family during the catrats' 10 year dragon jamboree but now seemingly they're starting to drift away too. Taimi's still in Cantha and now she's maybe dating?? Braham is still recovering. Kas and Jory are understandably busy. All he has is Lu. And he loves Lu, obviously! But now she's ALSO (temporarily, mind you) out doing stuff. (And tbf it's not long or major, she's just helping her brother prepare his campaign for the Khan-Ur election. She'll be gone maybe two weeks at most). He's got wifeguy brain you'll have to forgive him.
So the SotO plot starts and there's ZOJJA!!! His mentor that he hasn't seen in years!! Given her connection to Snaff he views her as his aunt in a roundabout way. She was close to his mother before she vanished. This is one of the few family members he has left, he's ecstatic!
And then he learns about the whole ascension business. And Zojja starts considering it after Mabon dies.
Kudo's distraught at the prospect but tries to be supportive. He doesn't actually think she'll do it. Not without him there at least.
But she does.
And now Kudo's back to having no family.

The catrats obviously love the rest of Dragon's Watch but there's still a very clear distance between them just by virtue of like, the enormous weight hanging on their shoulders.
It's not intentional but there are things, feelings, that the rest of the guild will never be able to fully grasp. That's part of the reason the catrats are so codependent I think: nobody will ever understand but the two of them. The pain, the hardship, the loss. The sense of duty and responsibility. It's their burden to bear but at least they're bearing it with someone.
The rest of the guild sort of has the privilege to go "okay I'm gonna sit this one out" (in more or less words) but Lucasta and Kudo don't get that luxury. And it's been like that for 10 years!! And it started when they were teens with no sense of identity that latched onto the first higher purpose they were offered.
Idk where I was going with this but [gestures] catrats

Catrat fact of the day: Kudo has no concept of money because of his experience as an Inquest nepo baby and everything he asked for experiment-wise was provided to him.
Lu is the one in charge of finances because the Council barely tolerates Gorr and is very stingy with research grants, so the household got pretty good at making due with what they had.

A SHRIMP!!!
Kudo really took to fishing when he was given the opportunity. That stupid outfit I have for him is canonical, it's his little peaceful hobby (that the wife approves of because it isn't inherently dangerous). And if Lu ever wants him out of the airship she can always tell him they're having seafood and he puts on his silly little outfit and waddles out to catch some.

Real catrat lore with no context:
Kudo almost kills Lu (for real)
Lu performs an ancient ritual with a Flame Legion artifact and Kudo gets a sick tattoo out of it
Kudo kisses Lu passionately at least once and neither of them bring it up
The catrats may or may not have had an intimate encounter but neither of them can remember exactly so they just pretend it never happened
The catrats are legally married in Cantha
