Now that DA4 has got a proper title and since I’ve also been listening to way too much Dance Fever it’s time I finally ask why almost every Dragon Age and Mass Effect fan I come across also happens to really like Florence + the Machine

girl you know I love youuuu and your lyric posts 💜 I’m gonna be obsessed with cassandra by florence and the machine now because “I used to see the future and now I see nothing” is relatable and intrigued me so much that I had to listen to the whole thing of course. any other faves??
COURTNEEEY my lyric posts wouldn’t exist without YOUR lyric posts (and the reactions I steal from you hehe) 😇🪽
From Florence specifically or songs in general? Assuming you mean from FATM, I recommend listening to the entire Dance Fever album (it’s produced by Jack so I think it’s a good entry point). My other favorites from that album are: Free, King, Choreomania, Girls Against God, Dream Girl Evil, Daffodil, My Love, and The Bomb.
Then her album Lungs has most of the songs you’ve probably heard before: Dog Days Are Over, Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up), Howl, Kiss With a Fist, Cosmic Love, HEAVY IN YOUR ARMS
WISH THAT YOU WERE HERE, Shake It Out, Never Let Me Go, Ship To Wreck, The End of Love…that’s probably plenty to start with lol 💜

Hey sweetie! I'm curious what do you think about Florence's new album (dance fever)?
hey anon!
short answer: our supreme goddess witch and company have blessed us yet again.
Unhinged flailing time!
Can we talk about the lyrics in King????? I started typing out my faves from just that song and realized i'd end up just copy/pasting all of them so, yeah. it's a masterclass in lyricism, vocals, sound production, and just musicality in general. And that's just the opening track. I think i stared into the mid-distance for a weird amount of time the first time i heard it.
Free gets me hype. I don't know how you listen to that song and dont want to dance immediately.
Back in Town punches me in the gut, just the way she lets her voice lilt and gives it a hymnal quality and just jdjhkljdfhdlh
Girls Against God: "i listen to music from 2006 and feel kind of sick" cool callout, thanks flo. I started typing more lyrics from this one too and was like yeah ok, it's the whole song.
Dream Girl Evil???? Has no right being that sexy.
Cassandra is an excellent textbook example of "how to write a gorgeous and haunting chorus."
Daffodil sounds like it was maybe a cut track from their Ceremonials album (this is the highest compliment). One of my favorite things about FATM is their combination/deconstruction of mythological, fairytale, and religious themes in songs.
My Love is the disco track i didnt know i needed.
And then there's a beautifully soft, tender song with "The Bomb." Also it has definite dramione vibes, i dont make the rules.
There are turns of phrase throughout that catch me by surprise and just make me feel everything. I thinkkkkk this might rank second for their albums for me. Nothing is gonna ever beat Ceremonials in my opinion. This album feels like they combined elements from both that era and How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful and it's such a fantastic combo.
In conclusion: i am enjoying it very much and its a perfect writing soundtrack.
Thank you for letting me be a complete nerd on main, anon!

for the music game! florence and the machine :)
yesssssssssss.......u make me talk about my PRECIOUS........................
Favourite Song: WHAT THE WATER GAVE ME (my #1 forever), what kind of man, mother, queen of peace, which witch, drumming song, breaking down (especially the acoustic one), daffodil, cassandra (that live one from the madison square garden recording is so good), the morning elvis duet with ethel cain (actually ethel slayed this she needs her own version just her...sorry she took the song its hers now....)
Least Favourite Song: shake it out, dog days are over, kiss with a fist
Favourite Album: how big how blue how beautiful - god i love this album so much. the only thing thats missing is that my #1 favorite song isnt on it lmao... the first few songs are the best album openers ever in my book, theres so much variety in the album too yet it still sounds and feels very coherent, and the last song mother, with how it ends on such a resigned/frustrated/exhausted feeling, yeah that always gets me....
Least Favourite Album: ok i like them all but if i had to rank them high as hope is my least liked....sorry just wish it had more! even if that was the point
Song that got me into them: what the water gave me! previously i only knew like, dog days are over, kiss with a fist, yknow, the ones that are in fanvids and shipping playlists lmao. those arent really my type so i thought i wouldnt like fatm! BUT I WAS WRONG!!!
Seen Live?: yes ONE TIME!!!!!!! i still cant believe it....im from the philippines so you it seemed impossible i thought it would never happen to me lol....
Rate: 10 :D of course....

Dance fever
So I’ve had a bit more time with this and it’s growing on me more and more. I was worried about Antonoff producing and thought we might have been in for another ‘Solar Power’ snoozefest but thankfully that is not the case.
I saw someone say this is an album made for lost women struggling with mental health and big decisions in their late 20′s and 30′s and that’s what I’ve felt since King was released and this album confirms that feeling.
I can see throwbacks to earlier albums, which makes sense as has been claimed that this album is poking a bit of fun at her more melodramatic days. Restraint seems to be a jab at all the critics who kept wanting her to reel it in and strip back, which she did in HAH, and now she’s done with that. For the most part.
The album feels very scattered to me. King seems more like a mid track then an opener, I think Choreomania fits better there. Having ‘Back in town’ and ‘Girls against God’ back to back seems an odd choice because these are both slow almost plodding songs and it feels like they are dragging everything down.
HAH seems to fit quite well where it is and I appreciate it a bit more now. The other 2 short tracks are good, but feel like teases. Prayer factory especially, feels like it’s about to get going and then it’s done.
A nice mix of the confessional/grounded lyrics and the more mythical, religious fantasy lyrics. She seems a lot more angry this time around. Some of the spoken word parts are a bit strange, but it’s not something I expect from her so maybe that’s why. But it works well on Cassandra, less so on choreomania. The lyric ‘I listen to music from 2006 and feel kind of sick’ stands out as a bit of a clunker. Replaces ‘green is so green’ from HAH as the worst FATM lyric imo.
The most ‘Florencey’ tracks are my favourites here, Daffodil, Cassandra, Dream girl evil and choreomania. Yeah it’s retreading old ground for the most part and they could have felt at home on any of the first 3 albums, but nobody does that huge belting sound better than her. And I was sorely missing it after HAH. I like how fucking seething she is in DGE.
The only song I’m really not liking still, and probably never will, is Back in town. I may just remove this dud from my playlist. I rag on Caught and Between two lungs but this is worse tbh. There just isn’t much going on here. Might be the first FATM song I actually hate.
Girls against god is reminding me of solar power the more I listen and that’s not a good thing. This is the most ‘Antonoff’ song imo and I can picture Lorde singing this on that fucking beach she’s always on these days. And the laughing is a bit weird
The bomb has grown on me a little bit, sounds like something that could be on HBHBHB. Very light. This is like Breaking down or I’m not calling you a liar, in that it’s ok, but it’s never going to be a favourite. I feel bad not liking this more cos rob helped write it.
My love and free are the most commercial songs here. Catchy electropop. My love is the one I prefer, free feels a bit clunky lyric wise. And my love is more dancable musically. Plus it had the better video.
Morning elvis is one I didn’t feel to bothered with at first. But I got my headphones and appreciate it more now. The choir vocals in the background make this song for me. It’s quite a personal song again. Her speaking accent comes through in this song a few times. Another one that could fit on HBHBHB
Some of the production is bugging me. Like Choreomania seems like it should be much bigger then it ends up being, but feels a bit flat. Like the end with ‘somethings coming’ being repeated, that just doesn’t feel right. That is her ‘Hounds of love’ moment right there and it doesn’t quite get to the heights it should. And same with the bomb and morning elvis, she is getting drowned out by the music. It’s the same problem I had with 100 years on HAH.
I love the whole aesthetic so far, the self parody thing. Like florence saw all the ‘feral fae nymph goblin siren renaissance witchy forest’ FATM vibe posts and just gave us that. The free video seems a bit out of place though. A lot better then what HAH had, which wasn't much of anything, there didn’t seem to be as much of a running theme with that album.
Bit pissed off with the deluxe just being acoustics and a cover though. A scrapped song was mentioned in an interview, could that not have gone here? I did have a slight hope that with all the fanservice there seemed to be here that we’d  finally get paper massacre but that was very optimistic I admit.
So even though I’ve been a bit less excited about this album for some reason, overall it’s pretty solid. I’m enjoying it and finding more things to like on each listen. It does leave me wanting more though, the short songs don’t help with that and neither does some of the shoddy production. She’s come so far as a songwriter and it shows, she has a lot more to say when compared to Lungs or Ceremonials. And she’s trying some new approaches, like with the spoken diary entries and interludes. There isn’t as many standout tracks here as on her first 3 albums, but I know I’ll be returning this a lot more than HAH. My opinions will probably change with time.
My album ranking so far:
Lungs>HBHBHB>Ceremonials>Dance Fever>HAH
Song list:
King-7/10  Free-6/10 Choreomania-8/10 (would be higher if produced better) Back in town-1/10 Girls against God-4/10 Dream Girl evil-9/10 Prayer factory-6/10(too short) Cassandra-10/10 Heaven is here-7/10 Restraint-5/10 (I like but not much here) Daffodil-8/10 My Love-7/10 The Bomb-6/10 Morning Elvis-7/10

Hii! I hope you're doing alright and that this week is treating you well❤ I just wanted to let you know that I stumbled upon your post about which song you've been listening to recently and it made me curious so I looked up Cassandra by fatm and it's... so good!! I then proceeded to listen to the entire album but Cassandra remains my favourite, the lyrics are so poetic! Anyway all this to say thanks for the indirect rec (you can pride yourself on having converted a new fatm fan xD)
omg YAY this makes me so happy!! i have been listening to dance fever basically on repeat since it came out 😂 ive always admired florence’s lyrics so much!!

Dance Fever Thoughts
I’m writin this as I listen to the album for the first time, so bear with me if it seems a bit scattered, but I wanted to write through the moment.
King - this song really grew on me. The lyrics were instantly revelatory but the instrumental becomes more lush and beautiful with each listen. Also, just a great vocal performance. I also feel like it may be the ultimate successor to the experiemnt that Breaking Down started, they seem a bit linked musically. Others have noted that this being the first new Florence album track since No Choir is a fascinating juxtaposition, and  yeah, lots to discuss there. I’m very interested if the rest of the tracks on Dance Fever are going to feel super pandemic inspired like both of the main singles (Heaven Is Here excepted). I love the harp outro on this so much.
Free - i was a bit surprised initially at how electronic the beat was for a Florence song (i’m an industrial listener, that’s not something that normally scares me but it was definitely not what I was expecting from FATM). But I adore how tongue in cheek this one is, while retaining that honest heart. The manic energy that relaxes just a touch in the chorus fits so well. Also those high little vocal runs in the chorus background vocals are so beautiful, as are the fantastic string highlights. I hope the strings are a part of the rest of this album, they sound SO good. Also this bridge fucking slaps. Looking forward to this one live too!
Choreomania - okay, a new new one. Huge Lungs vibes. The production on this song is really well done. OH this slaps. The rock n roll resurrected in your image section hit me like a two ton truck, I mean, shit. The way this builds feels so classic Flo but still in keeping with a new and evolved sound. And the little shouty bits in the chorus! Loved it.
Back in Town - the intro feels like a tiny church in the back of your headphones, so that’s already a win.I think I’m crying. As someone who was forced to move back to their hometown due to the pandmic, this one is hitting very close. Some of the most grounded atmospheric lyrics Flo has written, romanticizing a very real life and not a completely fabricated world (both are great, this is just the former). Feels like South London’s post-pandmic cousin. The muted vocals feel like listening to someone singing in the night a floor above you or a building over. Very haunting. The moon is already hanging over this album in an interesting way (especially with the lyrics in My Love coupled with this one).
Girls Against God - I already know I’m gonna vibe with this one. The guitar work on this is so beautiful. Is the Tom in this song Tom Moth? I love the sort of joyful rage that this song encapsulates. There’s a decided fury but in the way that we were all furiously staring at walls for a while. That fuzzy noisy guitar is so correct for this song. oh the outro is the same song?!?!?!
Dream Girl Evil - oh shit this is gonna be good. Strong start. Is this our unhinged anthem after the restraint? Oh she’s stompy!!! Great groove. Feels self aware in a way that the rest of the album hasn’t, like yeah it’s self aware of Florence’s public image, but it leans into the heightened emotions of that without being tongue in cheek. Maaaaybe my favorite so far.
Prayer Factory - this one seems to be an interlude. But the vibes are quite good.
Cassandra - The organ groove on that second verse entry is so fucking tasty. This builds into something I never would have thought from its first little introduction on TikTok a few days ago. Probably the most despairing of the album’s tracks yet, but it’s that accessible melancholy. This is also like, the fourth entry of brief spoken word on this album, which is neat. If I run fast enough could I break apart?
Heaven is Here - this one also really grew on me. I wish the claps and some of the percussive elements were a little louder in the mix, but that’s just me. Some really strong little lyrical moments here, more Catholic taste than the devil is such a banger line. There’s an abandon in Heaven is Here (and I would say Dream Girl Evil and Cassandra from this initial listen) that has felt missing from High As Hope in particular, it’s interesting to explore it again at this stage in Florence’s career. It also further reinforces the idea of Florence physically wrestling with music and song.
Daffodil - that opening gasp after Heaven is Here is extremely kick ass. Oh, the vocal range on this is wild! Feels very psychadelic! It feels like HIH has transported us somewhere entirely different than where we have been elsewhere on the album, we’re in a different playing space now. Damn, very different. I love it though.
My Love - oh this is the come down, isn’t it? Probably a good choice to release this as a single, but it definitely fits into the latter part of this album. This is the strongest instance of the fantastical and poetic juxtaposed with the literal and mundane that has been put into so much of the lyrics here. “Do I wait for time to do what it does” has only become a stronger sentiment the more I’ve thought about it. There’s a little bit more of an outro on this one on the album too.
Restraint - Florence’s grudge voice!!! ahh!!! Wait, this was in the teasers right?
The Bomb - I feel like this one is gonna make me cry based purely on the first twenty seconds. Love the brushed drums, very jazzy. I like that the song retains its quiet energy while still feeling impactful with the sudden cuts in instrumentation. I don’t love you , I just love the bomb. Wow.  Sometimes you get the girl, sometimes you get the song.
Morning Elvis - title alone has got me wondering about this one. And my proclivity towards the last track of a Florence album tells me I’ll love it. A song about the road and the  music kills you and saves you over and over. I found a hint of that monkey’s paw irony that so many people have felt over the last few years, that ‘well i wanted a break from the hectic life of touring and music but Not Like This’. Definitely not what I was expecting as a closer but I do like the song.
Overall, there are so many fantastic songs, hard to pick a fave right off the bat. My Kate Bush vibes were definitely spot on. And this album is going absolutely SHINE live, I can see why they saved a lot of the songs for post-album release shows, singing these with everybody will be very cathartic. It’s hard to escape the pandemic in all of this, I’m very curious as to how it will feel in a few years when  hopefully this is more thoroughly behind us. Musically a good bridge back into more lush orchestrations while keeping a lot of the organic instruments that made up High As Hope. I already can’t wait to listen to it again.
