Thinking about how Victor Casin heckles Adam Hesketh for only being his 'sniffer dog', then Adam tries to snipe back by saying he's a loose cannon, buuuuut Victor seems to embrace and accept that cannon moniker, claiming that the only thing he's good at is maiming and killing. When Danvers says that Adam and Victor aren't going to be field-partners anymore, Adam is the one who reacts viscerally while Victor makes fun of him for being so attached. Victor immediately rejected Ifrig as soon as it tried to be in his head.
But then as soon as Ifrig is in front of Victor (well, Leslie-Ifrig), he immediately starts blaming them for him being so isolated, and for having nothing in his life but being a loose cannon. He is the one who crumbles when Adam isn't his partner - he quits his job, nearly gets groomed into a cult, nearly gets killed, and pushes away everyone who could help him. Them getting separated as coworkers is treated as a breakup metaphor. Victor fighting Leslie-Ifrig is a dating metaphor. He only gets back to being partners with Adam when Leslie-Ifrig says 'It's not working out. I think we should kill other people'.
Meanwhile Adam deeply resents being called Victor's targeting system, wishes that he had a relationship with Arlgheen, and while he does make a lot of missteps as an investigator (and isn't very bright generally tbh) he manages to help figure out the case, save Rava and even gets her to respect him, and grows as a person. His resentment at being known only as Victor's sniffer dog is getting stronger as Victor is beginning to see his own reliance on Adam, but refuses to admit it. Adam is genuinely happy that he gets to work with Victor again after Danvers pairs them up - but he has more self-respect now. I'm so genuinely curious about what their relationship is going to develop into in the future, especially since 1. they're going to have a teenage sidekick and it's totally gonna be a parenting metaphor, and 2. it is only going to get more dangerous as the stakes ramp up and if they cannot trust each other and work together perfectly, they are going to die.
Adam just got given two possible future love interests (Allison, if you squint, and Rava more explicitly) while Victor immediately blew up his chance at having a love interest despite Leslie-Ifrig literally calling it a date when they hung out together, leaving him with nothing and no one but Adam. Victor is going to make himself miserable and Adam is either going to follow him down into the codependent yaoi or become a better person and that is so fucking fascinating.

I was gonna wait until the physical edition of Existentially Challenged came out, but this idea had been ruminating in my head for a while and I had to put it out there.
When Series 2 of the DEDA Files aired, everything was pretty normal and calm for the most part. Fans were engaging with the mystery and what was happening with Modern Miracle and all that.
And then the episode aired when Adam says the kissing line.
One fan posted the clip to Twitter with the caption “Wait what did he say?!?!?!” The tweet blew up and the Casketh ship tag really began to get popular. It was there before, but this episode really made the usage of it spike.

I'm so mad that I forgot Victor's hair got burnt off at the end of Existentially Challenged. I could have put that into my Casketh fic but now it's too laaaaaate.

Victor Casin is living the plot of the average sickfic, while Adam Hesketh is suffering through all of Casin's emotional constipation. Can he make a breakthrough and get his stupid partner to admit that he's in love already?
Meanwhile Alison and Doctor Diablerie are sent to do an exorcism in the woods - and Diablerie is actually taking the time to teach her things? But things go a little sideways when he forgets to tell her that she could get possessed by a murder-ghost before exposing her to getting possessed by murder-ghosts. So now Alison has to deal with both her crush on Diablerie, and possibly, maybe, getting possessed by a murder-ghost. Fun!

“Victor... Are you really okay?” Adam asked his partner who was sprawled on the bed.
“Adam, I’m fine. I’ve been telling you that thousands of times.” Victor snapped.
“Are you really? You say that you’re fine, but you never tell me what’s wrong. I just want to help.”
Victor whipped his head around to glare at him. “Do I really have to spell it out for you? I am fine!! I’M FINE!! I don’t need to tell you everything that’s on my mind!”
“Bullshit! I know you and I can tell that it’s on your mind.” Adam shouted.
“What’s on my mind?”
“Everything! The monastery, the secondary school, the Ministry, the Fluidic Killer - You almost died, Victor! Twice! How do you expect me to let that slide?!”
“Well, that’s funny. I don’t recall you comforting me in my times of crisis.”
“It’s because you never open up to me! You didn’t tell me what was going on with your arch-nemesis and-”
“Why... Why would I open up to you...? You’ll just dismiss me...”
“What? I’ll never dismiss you. Why would you think that?”
Victor clenched his fists and shot up from the bed, gritting his teeth. “Because it happened with my dad! He always tells me to toughen up and I’m fine. Always degrading me, dismissing me because I had the gall to show normal, child-like emotions! All of that... It’s so fucked up! All of it is!”
“Victor...” Adam hugged him tightly, causing Victor to stiffen up. “I’ll never do that to you. We’ve been friends since we were kids and...” He took a deep breath. “If we want this relationship to work, I want you to be honest with me. You don’t have to tell me everything if it makes you uncomfortable. If you really don’t want to talk about it, I’ll respect that.” He sighed and pulled away. “I’m sorry for being pushy. I just worry about you.”
Victor looked down. Dammit, how did he fall for this man? Sure, he was annoying and not good in a fight, but... At the same time, he stopped at nothing to protect him. After Leslie-Ifrig, he noticed that Adam had grown increasingly protective of him. He even killed someone to ensure his safety. He felt tears starting to form in his eyes, but he blinked them away. He mustn’t cry. He mustn’t be weak.
Adam climbed into bed with him and started humming a lullaby. Victor closed his eyes and snuggled his head in his chest. For a moment, he felt like he was back in his childhood home, letting his dad hold him close as he sang to him. The sweet memory left a bitter taste in his mouth.
“The thing is...” Victor began. “Is that he always does it when he’s angry. Mostly because I didn’t do what he wants me to do. But when he’s calm, he’s like the number one dad, taking me out to places, indulging me in my Judge Dredd phase... Thinking back, it’s all so confusing...” He sniffled. “Is it good to show emotion like that? Is it normal? Am I normal? Well, I’ll never know. If Ifrig hadn’t ruined my life, my dad would still be caring about me.”
“Victor, I know it’s hard to adjust after you get out of a toxic situation, but I want to know that what you’re feeling is completely normal. There comes a point where you can’t bottle up your emotions any longer and you just... need to let it out. I know how it feels.”
He felt a few tears fall from his eyes before burying his face in Adam’s shirt and sobbing. Adam petted Victor’s hair as he continued to sob.
Is it wrong for me to show human emotions...? All of this is so confusing.

Ooh, boy.
When Victor first realized his feelings for Adam, he was scared and, quite frankly, disgusted with himself. His family doesn't really like people who are gay and, at times, are blatantly homophobic in front of him. This planted doubts in his mind like "Is liking another man right? Is it wrong? Are these types of feelings normal?"
This, along with the fact that an Ancient will try to possess him if he uses too much of his power, causes a lot of tension between him and Adam.

Victor is a pretty good singer, but if anyone tries to tell him about it, he'll just say he's tone deaf.
One day, while he and Adam are clothes shopping, he started singing the ballad of Bohemian Rhapsody and Adam didn't interrupt.
But if you want a happy headcanon for Quinnby, whenever Trilby is sick or is having a mental health crisis, Chris pretty much does everything - the chores, the work for the Ministry, hell, even yardwork. Trilby pretty much apologizes for burdening Chris, but he tells him not to worry.
