very hype about new years! his energy is contagious and makes everyone around him (including you >:)) also very excited

will stay up. the whole night. parties til you have to force him to sleep, and he still has so much energy on the 1st of january?!

he is very hopeful towards the next year, and is all like "new year new me!!!!" except nothing really changes :,)

kind of indifferent to new years, but he takes the chance to eat cake.

consumes a lot of dessert... like a lot a lot- you need to remind him to stop! eating!

is super pumped as well!! she gets in the holiday spirit very easily and is bouncing around all the time

stays up til 3 am with you, as she enthusiastically rattles off her new year's resolutions, making you swear to hold her to her words

raiden ei

she doesn't care about the new year at all, it's just the same to her- plus she doesn't like acknowledging the passing of time, and is scared of change

so it's a normal night for her and for you too, except you manage to sneak in extra dango for her

before she heads off to bed, she wishes you a quick happy new year with a small hug, and leaves you to stay up without her

sangonomiya kokomi

she finally gets a day of rest and spends it to the fullest!

buys a bunch of decorations for no particular reason and brings you to the rooftop for a party- the only occasion she'll willingly socialise for

she conks out at 1am after wishing you a happy new years, because partying used up all her energy and she needs to recharge,, but she always tries her best to stay up all night

sayu

loves new years because everyone is too busy partying to notice her snoozing in the background

every year her resolution is the same: to grow taller (though she never seems to), you try to convince her to change her goal to working hard, but she stubbornly refuses- on the outside at least :>

sleeps the whole night away, waking up at like midnight for a snack and some new years greetings, before promptly going back to sleep

scaramouche

is scared of the year ahead and what it holds for him, but hides it behind a smile and celebrates with you

smirks and makes fun of your new year goals, though he secretly supports them (and you can tell) and the next year he does everything to help you achieve them

stays up all night, and because it's new year's eve, he can't help but feel pessimistic, so you sit next to him and hold his hand, reassuring him that everything's gonna be alright :)

thoma

takes a break from his housekeeping duties to spend some time with his friends, and you! really likes new years!!

astronomy

a/n: this took so long to finish *head in hands* anyways sorry if some parts are too long / short. and yes im posting this at like 1am the brain works in mysterious ways

ei; a tale old as time, young love don't last for life. and now i know, now i know. it's time to go, time to go.

you leaned back against the age old sakura tree, your emotions mirrored in it's state of full bloom. you took ei's hand in yours as you pulled her closer to yourself.

"we'll be together forever, right?"

"of course, y/n," she pressed a small kiss to your cheek.

the next couple centuries were a blur. you watched your girlfriend change, as wars raged on and people dropped like flies. people you both knew. you watched as she got a hard earned victory, but at a cost- the death of her twin sister.

you needed to be there for her, and you were! you took her in your arms every night, you let her cry into your shoulder. you were the only one she could truly put her gaurd down around.

she set her sights on eternity, but by then it was too late...

"eternity, huh," you mused. it sounded like a good idea to you, after all, "doesn't that mean we'll stay together forever?" her gaze turned stony. "you're not a part of this," she replied curtly.

it was as if a trapdoor opened beneath your feet as you fell, down, down, down. "...ei?" you tried, reaching for her hands, which she only yanked out of your grip. "young love doesn't last for life. we are simply an ephemeral affair in the grand scheme of things."

with those harsh words unfurling like a trap, engulfing you in them, it was as if a filter had been yanked off the way you saw the world. you knew the wars and losses would change her... but you never expected it in this way.

now, years later and as the vision hunt decree ravaged the lives of inazumans, you were ashamed to even have been in love with someone like that. you slumped down on the stump of the same sakura tree that you had spent happy years of your youth with raiden. "never again."

gorou; i thought if i wanted, i'd fall back in love; you said "distance brings fondness", but guess not with us.

every time you saw gorou, his eyes would light up, his tail would start wagging and you'd immediately jump into his arms. he caught you every single time, dropping anything he was holding to capture you in a tight embrace.

this time was an exception, however. you waited at sangonomiya shrine, excitedly bouncing on your tiptoes as the resistance warriors flooded into the shrine, trying to spot gorou's familiar brown ears. as soon as they came into view, you immediately manoeuvred through the crowd and into your boyfriend's arms.

except he wasn't there.

he slipped away quietly, and as you pushed through hordes of soldiers you found him sitting on a stack of crates, cradling a small box in his arms.

"gorou!" you nearly yelled, as you ran towards him, the sheer force of your happiness knocking him over. he gave a small smile and an apology to you, and you thought nothing of it.

but it kept happening. after every single battle he'd slip away from you, offering the tiniest of expressions and a half hearted greeting. until one day you couldn't take it anymore.

he came back after the biggest battle yet, all smiles as he chatted with his subordinates.

"y/n! we won! raiden demolished the vision hunt decree!" he said, running towards you this time. except his smiles and excited wags of his tail weren't for you. were they ever for you?

this time you pulled the disappearing act, slipping away to gorou's house, turning the words over in your head, as you put pen to paper.

i thought if i wanted, i'd fall back in love- ignore how after every battle i'd be stoked to see you while you never cared, but it became too much. they say distance brings fondness, but guess not with us... shouldn't you miss me more when you go away? i don't know if i love you anymore, but i wish you all the best.

and with that you left watatsumi island. who knows, maybe in the time you'd be properly apart from him would rekindle something in your hearts, though you doubted so...

kazuha; we've traveled the seas, we've ridden the stars, we've seen everything, from saturn to mars. as much as it seems like you own my heart- it's astronomy, we're two worlds apart.

you had traveled with the wandering samurai for the longest time now. you knew how to draw your blades in perfect unison, take people out with a single slash; you knew when the world went still and when the sound of your own breathing was the only thing you could hear, it was going to rain; and you knew him.

you knew how his eyes would flick to the sky when he was worried, how he would get the faintest blush after a couple glasses of wine, how he would pull on your collar to draw you towards him when he needed attention. but this meant nothing to him, apparently.

"kazuha, what do you think of fate?" you'd asked him one day as you lay in the sun side by side on a rock, relishing in his response; "whenever we part, i'll still find my way back to you. the fate that brings people together is not a cord so easily cut," he said carefully, picking his words like he was playing a chess match, "i love you, y/n, fate or no fate, we're meant to be." you wished he had been telling the truth.

you two had traveled the seas, ridden the stars, and seen everything from liyue to inazuma. he owned your heart, and as much as it seemed, as much as you wished, you didn't own his. it was foolish of you to think so; sure, you knew everything about him, and you'd picked up all his habits, but his heart belonged to nature, to the thrill of adventure.

as long as he had his blade in his hand and peace in his heart, he was satisfied. you weren't part of the equation.

you came to this revelation on a fine autumn day, when the winds were still, not a sound to be heard. the leaves turned red and fell, only to get pelted by raindrops as they brushed the ground not a minute later.

you and kazuha took shelter, and you pulled him in for one last kiss.

"you don't love me," you said frankly, as you studied his reaction carefully. he tucked his hair away behind both ears- shame.

"y/n..." he began, voice softer than you'd ever heard it. you quickly pushed a finger to his lips, effectively shutting him up. "no need to explain. i get it, it's fate, astronomy, we're two worlds apart."

you wished desperately for kazuha to love you, your entire vision of the world distorted. nature was no longer something disgusting as you had once thought, but rather beautiful, because of kazuha. poetry was no longer a waste of time, but music to your ears, because you were so far gone.

"i'll never forget you, y/n," those were the last words kazuha ever said to you, and you held them close to your heart.

the leaves on the trees turned red, slowly falling off the trees. "autumn comes when you're not yet done, with the summer passing by- but i don't think i could stand to be where you don't see me," kazuha remarked as he pushed a lock of his hair behind his ear.

"kazuha... what is it that you always told me when the leaves turn red?"

on this mountain path, where the red leaves lifeless lie... my heart class for a companion, echoing the deer's cry... "hm... i do love maple leaves, but it is a shame that so many goodbyes seem to happen when they turn red."

kokomi; from far away, i wish i'd stayed with you. but here, face to face, a stranger that i once knew.

a fleeting moment of sunlight where it broke the surface of water. ripples of multi coloured jellyfish dancing all around you. you held your breath as you sank beneath the waves, clasping her hands as you exchanged a kiss.

you couldn't wait to see kokomi after 3 years of being apart while you decided to explore the rest of inazuma, your heart fluttering as you flipped through a scrapbook of memories in your mind. you couldn't wait to sink into her hug and place a kiss on her forehead, so you marched onward to the island.

you stood at the tree with familiar purple foliage, grinning to yourself as you found the hideout you and kokomi frequented as children, giggling and playing around in.

you were surprised to find a whole setup in there, bookshelves, a desk, chair, and the like. "huh, guess someone else found it?" you mused to yourself, before coming across a thick military volume on the wooden desk. you chuckled under your breath. nevermind, kokomi was probably still using this little nook to avoid social interaction and recharge.

speaking of kokomi, you hadn't seen her in so long, excitement fluttering in your heart as you took a stroll through your homeland. you returned to watatsumi island, eager to ask her a certain question. after being apart for so long, you'd come to terms with your feelings. surely she would reciprocate your love... right? or were those kisses you'd shared merely trifling exchanges to her?

you stood frozen at sanganomiya shrine. kokomi was there, looking gorgeous as ever, wearing a floaty shrine maiden outfit while surrounded by a crowd of people. she had a geniune smile on her face, as she spoke to them one by one. more and more people arrived, and with each one of them leaving with contentment written on their face, you heart started sliding lower and lower. what happened to you being the only person kokomi could talk to with a smile on her face? were you not as special to her as you remembered? what if... what if she had found someone else?

after the crowd had dispersed, you watched as she took out a book and lounged at the side of the shrine for mere seconds before someone in soldier's garb ran in, yelling for a "her excellency!" to which kokomi responded to immediately, putting her light novel away without any hesitation. your heart pounded against your chest, as reality slowly caught up to you.

exactly how much had changed in the years you had been apart? ... it wasn't exactly a question you wanted answered. who was this stranger that you once loved?

with tears spilling uncontrollably out of your eyes, you turned and fled, away from kokomi, away from watatsumi, away from change.

yoimiya; you're pointing at stars in the sky that already died. stop trying to keep us alive! you can't force the stars to align when they've already died.

they were the same fireworks she set every year on your anniversary. the same slip of paper with the same formula, meticulously written down so they could be replicated to perfection each year.

it was a tradition held near to both of your hearts, something you had repeated for the near 7 years you had been together.

this year however, something was different. something was missing, and you both knew what it was. feelings- love.

you sat on amakane hill admiring your girlfriend's handiwork with her. she leaned her head against your shoulder, a familiar gesture, but this time devoid of affection.

people often say that fireworks come and go in a fleeting heartbeat, but if they are memorable enough, they will remain in bloom forever in people's hearts. those who accompanied you and the loveliness of the moment itself, will burrow deep into your mind as a beautiful memory. and as you look upon the same fireworks, many years later, that same memory and the feelings that came with it will surely rise again to the forefront of your heart.

that was a saying you've heard time and time again. you completely agreed with it, especially since you were dating the queen of the summer festival herself. so, as beautiful as the fireworks were, they were meaningless with no real love behind them; just the desire to hold on to something- something that wasn't really there.

you sighed as the last fireworks popped and fizzled away in the night sky, pushing yourself away from yoimiya.

"y/n, what is it? are you upset?" she asked earnestly, and you tore your gaze away from the sky and to the ground.

"no, it's just," you said, trying to gather the courage to start this conversation with her, "yoi- yoimiya, don't you think something's a little off this year?"

you glanced up towards her, and you could see it from her eyes- she knew.

"y/n. we should break up, shouldn't we?" she asked, her voice lacking it's usual enthusiasm; and even in the last few seconds of your relationship, she still cared about what you thought. you were the most important person in her life, clearly meaning a lot to her, but you guys were simply not meant to be.

"yeah," you said, voice coming out a lot shakier than you'd like it to. you'd both tried to keep your relationship alive for the longest time, and it hurt to finally face the harsh reality. your vision swam with tears, as you buried your face into your hands. you couldn't force the stars to align if they'd already died.

but there was something else, a fear that you'll never be loved again. you'd clung tight to your relationship, even when feelings started to dwindle, because what if you never found someone who loved you again? what if yoimiya was the only one who was capable of loving you? and even she was mercilessly ripped away from you by the endless whims of the universe.

you wiped your tears away with an unnecessary harshness, and when you looked up she was already gone.
