people who create dnd characters that are similar to them in personality are just playing themselves and should not be treated as having made a character
people who make any other dnd character should also be treated as just playing themselves since people refuse to even consider roleplay smps as fiction

actors who play a character with the same first name as them aren’t really acting
and so on
maybe YOU can’t separate characters and real people and think that everything you see from a youtuber even when they’re explicitly acting is how they are in real life but we as a fandom just don’t have that issue lol. we’ve had disclaimers and indicators for when we’re talking about characters and not content creators for years because a certain smp contained a character having suicidal thoughts as a result of abuse at the hands of another character and we needed to make it absolutely crystal clear that we were referring to a fictional storyline and not real guy #1 being an abuser and real guy #2 being suicidal. these customs have either extended into other corners of mcyt fandom, or some developed their own independently like hispanic mcyt fans have used the word cubito to distinguish mc guy from real life guy from years, a term that other language speakers liked so much we’ve also started picking it up lol
we know exactly what we’re doing. i get that the line maybe does seem more blurred to an outsider looking in (i wouldn’t know given that both my first fandom at age 12 and current fandom at age 20 were mcrp lol) but it’s universally understood amongst us. i don’t have a problem separating hermitcraft!gem and empires s1!gem the wizard with a twin brother and empires s2!gem the princess and cc!gem the real life canadian woman.
idk it rubs me the wrong way that after years of trying to explain this we’re either met with people calling us racists because of three guys that the rest of us (all of us, really, because dream team fans do not claim to be minecraft fans. those are the type to actually write rpf and ship the real life racist guys) hate probably a lot more than any of you do, or they watch a few minutes of a less roleplay-heavy series/part and decide that the entire medium is invalid as a form of storytelling
it’s so annoying. i don’t think we need to be understood to have validity as a fandom we’ve been doing this for years already without that but it is so infuriating and sad how whenever there’s some kind of fandom poll thing one of three things happens
mcyt fans are banned outright and placed on the same level as something like hp
an mcyt fan runs their own and gets harassed for it
a non-mcyt fan allows us in until they get harassed so badly by whatever fandoms we go up against that they end up deleting our bracket
in what world is that normal behaviour. and that harassment always involves calling them all racist cishet white men such as misgendering both eret (real life bisexual genderqueer person) and their character (also queer), attempting to harass jimmy solidarity fans because jimmy makes mc videos so he must be a dream associate (the only time they interacted was in a tournament during which dream and georgenotfound shittalked jimmy’s best friends to his face), all the shit quackity has gotten for being a former friend of the dream team as if he wasn’t the #1 victim of their racism and xenophobia, the fact that any time c!technoblade is involved in a poll we have to beg other fandoms not to talk shit about him because the real life man died of cancer before dream’s grooming allegations came out, similarly when tfc was in one. and so on and so forth. all because people can’t separate roleplay and real life and think that the entire minecraft sphere revolves around dream just because their idea of mcyt does (not even his own smp named after him did that).

Context: Present day, loose sequel to "Taking turns."
Words: 836
Hayden's already on his way to the door when a resonant knocking comes, steady and loud. A second later he's opening it.
"Good evening, Mr. Christensen." The officer had already taken his hat off, revealing a vaguely familiar face. "I hope you're well?"
Hayden felt slightly uneasy, but couldn't disagree.
"I just saw there was a vehicle at the edge of your property. I was called out to investigate before it was towed, to make sure it wasn't one of yours?"
Hayden had more vehicles than the average person, it was true, but he didn't have some vast garage like a Canadian Jay Leno. His barn had farm stuff in it, not an additional fleet of bikes that no one in town had ever seen.
"A friend's," Hayden says at last, "he ran out of gas a ways out and pushed it to the bottom of the hill. It's fine."
The officer hesitates.
Hayden can see where this is going, he didn't go down to the bottom of the hill, but its a private road and not much shoulder to boot. If the bike it laid even a little in the road, it could cause an accident.
"I don't mean to impose, but if you'd be willing to lend a hand, I can get it off the road."
"Of course not, sir," the officer says, shoulders sagging in relief.
Hayden thinks to himself that this guy can't be more than ten years younger than him. He wonders if its his name or his age that makes him 'sir' when his older sister still calls him childhood nicknames in front of their whole family.
It's a heavy bike, and once its up the hill, Hayden parks it just out front. The officer backs out of the driveway and drives off without more than a wave farewell. Hayden takes the opportunity to take the bag out of the trunk box.
He's no expert, but he thinks the trip is long enough to warrant more than Ewan has packed.
Ewan is still sleeping on the couch where Hayden left him earlier. After Ewan passed out, Hayden went to the kitchen to reply to some emails in privacy without removing himself too far. It was tedious but distracting work, keeping him from turning over questions he doesn't have answers to. The kitchen window had let him see the police car pull up.
Ewan has apparently heard none of it.
He's still laying sprawled out on the sofa where Hayden left him, one arm folded under his head, legs akimbo. The furrow from his brow is almost completely gone, but he's no longer smiling either; he just looks tired. He looks fine otherwise. Certainly not like he's been driving for days.
Hayden can't help but wonder why he's here. He knows why on the outside, they're trying to rekindle something that had faded away. But he thinks about the things Ewan had told him over dinner, about the stress and desperation of work balanced with family.
Hayden knows a little what that's like. Smaller family, less work, but he gets it. He likes the quieter life he's built for himself; it's big enough, he thinks. But man… the stress. He gets it.
He thinks that despite the length of time they've known one another there were people who must have been closer — physically, emotionally — that Ewan could have gone to. But besides that dinner in Berlin, there's something more. He sits down on the coffee table, leans forward and brushes the hair back from Ewan's face. He's trying to recall the feeling of Ewan's head in his lap, stroking his hair, feeling settled and empty.
It's different though, it feels more intentional and less like a passing moment of comfort. No negotiation then, but less conscious thought as well. That had been the point.
Slowly, Ewan's eyes flicker open, and when he speaks he sounds rough — though he can't have slept more than thirty minutes.
"What're you doing?"
Hayden withdraws slowly, rubbing his hands on his thighs. He doesn't want to answer because he doesn't know what to say; no idea what he was doing nor how to cover it up.
"Checking on you," Hayden decides.
"Mm…" The acknowledgment becomes a drawn out groan as Ewan rubs his face, curling up a little and turning away from Hayden.
"I can set you up in the guest room unless you have a place to stay," Hayden continues. "I didn't find much stuff in your bike."
Turning to look at the bag he left near the entryway, Ewan glances at it and then shakes his head.
"That's all I've got." He says it like he knows its not enough but he's okay with that.
Hayden isn't completing thoughts right now. He's thinking about the linens hanging on the clothesline and the weather.
"Do you wanna stay?" Hayden asks, putting a little more force behind the question.
"Yeah," Ewan says, "as long as I'm not putting you out."
"You're not."
"Then I'd like that."

Supernatural-where do I stand?
OK, so this will probably not be seen by anybody because I don’t really understand the functioning of SM in general, and least of all, tumblr. I am a french canadian, so english is not my maternal language, which means, there will be some vocabulary and grammar errors.
So, I started watching supernatural around 2 and a half years ago in a binge tv shows period of several months where I had personal struggles, and this show somehow connected to me and stayed stocked in my mind. For probably 6 months, I sticked with the show only, which means no following actors on tweeter or IG or FB, nor seaching them or the show on google. I saw 2 brothers sacrificing everything for each other well being over and over again, even if sometimes, they fell out of line (figths between them over the view of the goodness of some monsters, them not having the same POV of how to avoid the apocalypse, trust or not the British men of letters, ect.) (14 seasons of fights, which is normal between 2 individuals, brothers or not, is so hard to summerize! I won’t even try!), the fact is that they always choose each other. Along the line, I saw a lot of side caracters who helped developing the subtlities of the personnality of those 2 main caracters: john, bobby, ellen and jo, gordon, ruby, bela, lisa and ben, castiel, adam, garth, lucifer, meg, crowley, kevin, Ezekiel/Gadreel, amelia, gabriel/trickster, benny, mary (This is not a exhautive list, I must have missed important caracters). The point is, all those secondary caracters for me have always served the goal to further the plot of sam and dean winchester, deepening their persona and explaining their bond through adversity. Then, I went to the rabbit whole of internet!!!
For the first few months, I followed the actors on their social media, and by that I mean I followed like 15 actors who had the most recurring presence on the show. Nothing shocking appeared to me from them, but I started to see in comments that there were factions in the fandom. I am a curious person, so for about a year, I explored all the theories, keeping in mind that all of it is fiction. At 36, I had never been aware of fanfiction, ships (Which I was like “ why are they talking about going at the sea or fishing!!) neither of fictional caracters or actors playing those caracters (I know now it is RPF) in this phenomenom.
One thing for sure that I have identify myself is that I am a bibros, if the meaning of bibros is that the show supernatural is, at it’s core, the relationship of the two brothers, sam and dean, and even if you might identify with one more then the other, you still think of them as equally important to the story. After that, from what I have seen, there seems to be 2 different types of wincest shippers (I totally might be wrong on this part, let me know!). There seems to be a consensus that the brothers are each other first priority and soulmates. But while some ships that it extend to a sexual relationship, others only consider the soulmate part without the sexuality. I am of the former part. I am also very interested in the closeness that the 2 actors, jared and jensen, share. So I am very aware of the J2 tinhat (faction of the fandom who believe that Jensen and Jared are in a romantic relationship) which i still consider as theories, but alternate between believing and not.
After those identifications of myself in this fandom, I must say, at first, I could understand the appeal of castiel, his epic entrance in the series and his importance in dean’s caracter development (can he trust him or not while he knows his brother is lying to him and trusting a demon-season 4). But, here comes the internet rabbit hole! I have to say, it was some extreme and too much present “castiel defenders” that drove me away from this caracter (I would probably have found flaws in his caracter’s development without them, but I surely would like him more). And here, let me put a distinction. I do think that there are peaceful destiel shippers who know that it is only a fandom who like the idea of cas and dean loving each other without having the need of that being explicitly shown in the serie. Like the majority (of what i have seen) of the wincest fandom believe in the love between the brothers but don’t actually need that love (the erotic part of that love) to be explicititly shown in the serie.
So, yeah, I found the existence of what is called the destihellers. For 2 years, I have just went from blog to blog, tweeter scandal to another, and from what I have seen, it is always some “make destiel canon” faction that is the starting of big drama. So that is my only “anti”, because otherwise, i believe in freedom, as long as it stays in the fandom. So after founding my multiple identification in the supernatural fandom, i have only this message to offer: ship what you want, communicate with those you identify to IN THE FANDOM but let it here, ships and theories RPF are’nt welcome when you are meeting the actual actors portraying those caracters. That is your creativity and beliefs, let the actors and writters of the show use their own creativity and knowledge of their show to build what they believe in. It is ok to be critical of their work, but in the end, you won’t win by creating drama and thinking by being annoying.

Friendly PSA
I really don’t like RPF and don’t ever want to see it. I also fully support AO3’s commitment to allowing people to post anything, even content most people (including me) find objectionable. RPF is a moral gray area to me, though others disagree. I think if you do post it, it should not be in the show tag and you should lock it so subjects don’t find it accidentally.
However, not everyone agrees with me. And some people are posting fics that include fictional characters and real people. So to best curate my own experience, while acknowledging that AO3 is a space where people should be able to write whatever they want to write, I’ve created a search that includes Schitt’s Creek fics but excludes RPF, actor RPF, and Canadian Actor RPF. I’ve then bookmarked that search on my phone and computer so that I can see what I want and not see what i find upsetting. I just wanted to share in case others want to use that strategy as well.

Yes! I’ve posted earlier about the hockey/actor rpf crossover idea, tyler seguin x ryan reynolds, reynolds is cast as seggy in a biography film and moves to his house for a few weeks or so to study the character for the role. I want it written by somebody who is great with characters and who can come up with great ideas for some canadian bonding.
(then there is a very nsfw thing but i’m too much of a prude to write about it publicly)
O: How do you begin a story–with the plot, or the characters?
I usually know the main pairing I want to write, then I have to come up with the plot idea. Sometimes (or usually) the plot unfolds when I start writing with just the characters and a vague idea.

im sick of seeing that stupid ass ao3xchina discourse but here are some thots as a chinese person who’s been looking into this and reading comments from china based netizens:
lgbt works, no matter how you see it, including the ones written by self-acclaimed and detested fujoshis, have led to serious consequences w/the chinese government arresting said people. i do not/have not researched consequences this has had on lgbt activists and actual lgbt ppl, but i do know that plenty of lgbt media made by lgbt ppl that deals with serious conversations have also been censored and prevented from being publicly released. ao3, in a sense, however your opinions on the site, was a place for lgbt fiction written by lgbt ppl and yes, fujoshis, were allowed to flourish. a complete condemnation of ao3 (in this respect) would include a condemnation of lgbt fetishizers, yes, but also lgbt ppl writing fiction depicting themselves for other lgbt ppl or whoever would enjoy the material. it’s astounding to me that many ppl are just framing this as “lmao fandom freaks mad that their sicko p/dophilia ridden website is banned, as it should have been years ago”. that in itself is such a shallowly tumblr way of looking at things. but obviously this situation isn’t black & white and there are problems but I think the main problem rn that we should ALL be focusing on is not about whether or not the site is blocked, but at the intense hatred and backlash directed at the chinese actor, who plays an lgbt character in a well-known wuxia lgbt webseries, who was blamed for this incident. // Read More//
I have not seen the post in whole that kickstarted this, but I do NOT think it’s appropriate to equate the chinese government to nazism or say “how else can they cope with coronavirus”. i think these statements say enough for themselves, and these are likely the same ppl who say shit like ‘china is why disney isn’t giving us gay characters’. however, i disagree with a lot of leftists on here who say that china is the most socialist country in the world rn. i HIGHLY disagree with that and my opinion is that it is just as capitalist as the US and working its way into even more of that. i also have a theory that their censorship laws are working in tandem with providing large chinese conglomerates like tencent etc monopoly over one of the largest consumer populations in the world. but im derailing here.
the problem with the ao3 discourse is that the fic in problem was a RPF (real person fic), and depicted said chinese actor as a sex worker and trans. if this were a fictional character, then there would be no argument here. the problem is that this is the icky category of real life people. i have NO idea if this fic was originally written in chinese or english. if it were chinese, then that’s just a problem about the ethics of RPF. If it were in english, it would be the ethics AND adds a layer of “were they treating this actor, a chinese man, as a commodity?” it really is an unfortunate trend where east asian ppl in general are seen as less than human, an entertainment toy to be tossed around, but this attitude is too prevalent to ignore. in that respect, i do not blame the fans of said actor for being angry and reporting this to the government. judging from the chinese comments, it seems like (excuse the dumbass fandom lingo) a war between “stans” of this actor and “shippers” who wanted him together with his co-actor in the lgbt webseries they made their debut in. THAT was, apparently, the heart of the problem. the sex worker & trans stuff just came on top of it.
because of this, chinese fans turned their attention onto him and have been nonstop raining down hate and threats at him even now. he’s trending in china BECAUSE of this, and i find this behaviour sickening and should be addressed instead of what’s going back and forth with the community here rn about “lol sicko fanfic site” vs. “but how will they cope?!?!” argument that has no right fucking answer.
i don’t know why i wrote this rant and at this length that nobody will read but honestly i am sick of seeing ppl discourse about china and chinese people here between disney, the coronavirus and now this. it’s obvious y’all have sinophobia from your own racism or the latest red scare that’s been going around that you need to get checked, but i really fucking hate both of those opposing posts about ao3xfanfic going around. it’s really really obvious that no one on tumblr can talk about china and chinese media without 1) being eurocentric about lgbt issues in china and 2) being xenophobic and racist. it really doesn’t help that there are a lot of american/canadian-chinese who display self-hating attitudes toward chinese people that you guys keep platforming and promoting since it’s “woke”. also, it’s clear that pseudo-politics has broken all of people’s brains to thinking there is always a right and wrong answer. some of this shit is nuanced, and no it’s not centrist in this case to say that there is literally no right side to be on in the ao3xchina discourse. i hate that people were clowns enough about this whole thing that i had to write this, and i don’t even log into tumblr that often anymore and i still had to witness these posts.

2018 Fest FAQ

General Questions
What is a big bang? There are many different types of big bangs, all varying slightly, but usually a big bang is a process in which authors write long fics and artists make art for them. In this case, the primary form of fanwork can be fic, podfic, art or vids, and our word count/work goal will be in the 20k range. See The Rules Post for detailed specs, or check out previous years’ challenges on AO3.
What is dS/c6d? Due South and all the other fandoms that feature any of the main actors from due South. For more information, check out the entry on Fanlore.
Can I find you on other platforms? Absolutely! Feel free to join and watch the dreamwidth comm even if you aren't signing up. If you ARE signing up, please join the comm ASAP. Some important reminders and posts may be members-locked.
How do I sign up? Sign ups have started, and you can find the post where Primary and Complementary creators can sign up for the challenge here. Primary sign-ups will stay open until the Primary Work Deadline, so you can sign up at any time until then. Basically, if you can hit the deadline, you’re in! Complementary creators can also sign up later, when the complementary claims open.
What kind of timeline will I be under? Sign-ups open: March 11th 2018. Primary works due: August 20th 2018. Complementary claims open: August 25th 2018. Checkpoint for complementary creators: September 22nd 2018. Complementary works due: October 1st 2018. Go-live date for all works: Canadian Thanksgiving, October 8th 2018.
Where will the works be hosted? We are using AO3 for this challenge. If you need an invite, please shoot us an ask or a message.
What’s a Complementary fanwork? A fanwork based on the Primary fanwork you claim. The requirements for secondary fanworks are spelled out in The Rules Post.
What's a checkpoint? This is where we check in with all creators to see if they’re on track and if they need any help.
What about chats? Do I have to do those? There are text-based group chats on Skype. They’re optional, but we encourage you to participate in them. Last year’s chats were excellent for brainstorming, moral support, a lot of hilarious tangents, group therapy, commiseration and everything else you're going to need to get through this.
I've got two ideas in my head. Can I work on both? Yes, as long as you think you'll be able to finish both by the deadline.
If I am doing more than one Primary fanwork, do they both have to be the same medium and fandom? Absolutely not! For example, if you want to write a 20k Flashpoint story and do a series of Hard Core Logo drawings, that’s fine.
Can I write/podfic with someone else? Yes, you may co-author your big bang if you want to. However, the word minimum for co-authored/podficced works is 25,000.
What if I have to drop out? There are no penalties for primary creators dropping out! RL happens, writer's/artist’s block happens – we totally get that. If you drop out, we'll give you a hug and hope to see you the next round. If you’re a Complementary creator already assigned to a Primary work, we do ask that you let us know as soon as possible if you’re having problems, so that we can try and assign someone else.
Can I have an extension? Sorry, no. We need finished works by the deadlines, so we can publish on time. (But if you miss the Primary Work Deadline, you can still submit your work to the collection as long as it’s finished by the Complementary Work Deadline. You just won’t get a Complementary work to go with it.)
Primary Fanworks
What type of requirements are there for fic/art/podfic/vids? Please see The Rules Post for a complete list of requirements.
I've already been writing a story -- can I use that? You can use a Work in Progress as long as 20,000 words are entirely new and unseen.
What genres/fandoms are allowed? All genres are allowed. All ratings are allowed. RPF is allowed. For a partial list of C6D fandoms, have a look HERE or HERE. If your fandom is not on these lists, contact a mod – odds are we’ll say it’s good.
Can I do a crossover, and if so, do both have to be C6D? Yes you can, and no, the crossover fandom does not have to be C6D. However, the primary fandom MUST be C6D. For example, if you were writing a due South/White Collar crossover, the main POV must be from a dS character’s perspective. The C6D fandom cannot be a cameo. It could, however, be set in New York, with dS characters going to work with the White Collar unit.
Does my art have to tell a story? Not necessarily, but there should be something there for the Complementary creator to work with.
Complementary Fanworks
How do I know what I'm making a fanwork for? After the primary fanwork deadline, we'll make a claims post. In this post we'll include the primary work summary and any warnings the creator gives. You can choose which piece you'd like to create a fanwork for, and then we’ll link you up with the primary creator for that piece.
How do I make a claim? Initial claims will open for 48 hours to allow people in all time zones to choose their favourite primary work. If any works are claimed by two or more people in that time, we’ll draw names out of a hat. After the initial 48-hour period, any remaining claims will be on a first come, first served basis.
What happens if the number of Primary creators doesn't match up with the number of complement creators? If Primary fanworks outnumber Complementary creators, we will allow people to make a second claim. If it's the other way round, we’ll allow more than one creator to be assigned to the same piece. Either way, everyone who wants to participate will get to participate. We can’t guarantee that all Primary works will get a complementary work, but we’ll do our best.
Can the Complementary fanwork be done in the same medium as the Primary fanwork? We’d prefer them to be different, but if this isn’t possible (given that our fandom is very small!) then we will accept complementary fanworks in the same medium.
How will I get in touch with my Primary fanwork creator? We will provide you with contact information once you are committed to that individual. From there you can contact them to obtain a copy of their fanwork and ask whatever questions you want. We would like to encourage you to be in contact with them and to share what you make for them throughout the process.
Posting Requirements
What types of requirements are there for me to post my fanwork? You will need an AO3 account. Detailed instructions will be posted closer to the submission deadlines. Contact the mods as soon as possible if you need an invite.
Can I post it to my journal early to show my friends? No, the first reveal for your fanwork must be on the big bang’s AO3 collection, on the go-live date.
