This is the third night awake for Moiraine and NOW SLEEP is NOT AN OPTION ???
(a painful summary)
Tumblr media
She left Lan, rode all night and arrived in Cairhien in the early morning, looking a little disheveled
Tumblr media
She was tired after looking for signs and clues all day
But then...
Tumblr media
she ran to Rand, slayed a forsaken, got almost choked, ran and rode through the forest and had to walk back to Cairhien
Tumblr media
Rand reminded her painfully that she is powerless
Tumblr media
She is f*** exhausted
But
Tumblr media
SLEEP IS NOT AN OPTION
because:
Tumblr media
I would not blame her for falling asleep

So I finally gave in and I'm watching The Wheel of Time on the mother's Amazon Prime.
I've enjoyed it thus far. Season Two is far more exciting than Season One, naturally, since the latter had the utterly unenviable task of setting up all the main characters and the general world; but I was delighted by the fact that in the very first episode Rand wears a woolly jumper.
The costumes in general are just excellent, really. There's the inevitable leather waistcoats and standard medieval fantasy outfits, but Season 2 in particular have really pushed the boat out with the Seanchan and I'm totally in love with Cairhien:

And I love Sharon Gilham's inspiration for the designs:
Gilham cites the cultural influences in Cairhien being Japanese and French. She notes, “I gave all the cultures in The Wheel of Time a color palette as well as a set of silhouettes which made them instantly distinctive and different from each other. In this case I combined Japanese kimono shapes with exaggerated skirts with full petticoats in the style of traditional French costume.” The diadem indicates Moiraine’s social standing, while other crowd members will wear headdresses reminiscent of French traditional headwear.
Nerdist: GET AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK AT THE WHEEL OF TIME SEASON 2 COSTUME SKETCHES; written by Amy Ratcliffe
It's bizarre; in my day-to-day life I really don't care much about clothes or fashion, but in fantasy or science fiction it's the make or break for me. Do I believe that people in this culture would actually wear these clothes, or are they just meant to populate a background? But again, right from the get go, Rand was wearing a woolly jumper. Matt was wearing what, to my eyes, was basically an ankle length cardigan. We get to see Anvaere putting on each piece of her outfit, showing us how it all works. Suroth wears layers! So many layers of robes!!! Most certainly I believe that these characters would actually wear these clothes.

After all has been said and done, I feel super bad for Lady Anvaere Damodred. Lady thinks she’s played the absolute shit out of Daes Dae’mar to manuver her House into prominence again after “Uncle” ruined them, and she comes to find out that her dirty rotten offspring bargained with the fucking Dark to make it happen instead! All her effort, all her work, all the indignities she suffered, all her diligence, it just kind of breaks my heart, you know?
And now what is she left with? Surely Barthanes will be executed for being a Darkfriend, that’s what most nations do when they’re found - though I don’t know how his status as Queen Galldrian’s fiancé will affect that because she could be a Darkfriend, too! In Cairhien, you never know!
So yeah, my sympathies are with Lady Anvaere. (Plus she was so well done, gracious me.)

Thoughts about 2x07 - Daes Dae'mar (show spoilers)
Wow, the relationship between Moiraine and Siuan is over. I don't really get why Siuan is thinking that caging Rand is the best option (that wasn't in the books, right?). Either way, after Siuan commanded her to close the Waygate and after Moiraine simply left Siuan wounded and 'broken' by Lanfear, I think this is a definitive end to the ship...
Highlights of this episode for me were Egwene (her power and her chilling words to Renna when that bitch had said a lot of bullshit about being on the same side), Anvaere (I think her son is a really dumb Darkfriend and I'm glad she realised what a disappointment he is) and of course Lanfear, who looked amazing ravaging Cairhien.
Because there were so many storylines and many characters, they didn't all have a lot of time, so some of the scenes felt a little hurried to me (like Mat being transported to Falme by Lanfear and getting that tea from Ishy, or the introduction of Bain and Chiad).
Though this episode was not my favorite of the bunch, I think it was entertaining with really important plot points for Moiraine (she got her power back, is that permanent?) and Siuan.

if you've talked to me at all since the first big episode we had in carihien then you know how much i disliked the decision to go for a rococo aesthetic given what we know about cairhien in the books lol
by invoking the french revolution you bring in the audiences preconceived notions about what that time period was like. in popular historical imagination its a situation where the rich hoarded all the wealth until the poor rose up and killed them, which is simple but true in broad strokes. while we definitely see a wealth divide similar to this in the books (particularly with the forgate), it also isn't really the best analogy for the state cairhien is in in the mainline of the series in the books.
due to the aiel war and their custom for taking one fifth of the property from their enemies when they defeat them, the land has low-key been strip mined. by the time rand gets there the towers are still covered in scaffolding, we see that the aiel are still passing around treasures from cairhien when we spend more time in the wastes in later books, famine is imminent and the line of succession is tenuous at best. the caste system is also a bit more complex (convoluted?) than the french rev analogy as the average viewer might interpret it implies. the upper class are essentially killing and torturing each other to have power for like a week over dwindling resources that they will be assassinated for starting the cycle of power struggle all over again. if cairhien is anything french rev it's like. IMMEDIATELY post revolution not pre just in terms of a chaotic, painful rearrangement of society
cairhien in the books a nation that used to have way more sway politically on the continent having to come to terms with the fact that it's future means potentially abandoning sovereignty or becoming increasingly dependent on the nations around it for aid. and i think the architectural aesthetic described in the books (granted, as recreated in my mind palace) is way more interesting!! we could have had organic brutalist wood clad skyscrapers!!!
i think the idea of dark wood and geometric design with sharp angles is also more interesting thematically in communicating how the people of cairhien operate as a society. this kind of minimalist presentation belying the fact that they literally might not own as many ostentatious family heirlooms as they used to, but also giving the false impression that the home owner is being transparent and has nothing to hide. the ultimate "im an open book" power move while they are all hiding way more secrets than than their walls might imply lol
by not talking about laman and the lingering impact of the aiel war, season 2 just ended up feeling like the writers had sanded the more dynamic political dimensions and ideas surrounding cairhien in the books for an easy visual catch all

I am loving Mat’s “in one redstone door out the other” show theory. Maximum chaos if he goes from antagonizing Nynaeve and co to stuck in the desert. Can you imagine Rand’s reaction when Mat is suddenly there hanging?? Moiraine’s when they get back?? Nynaeve’s when he doesn’t come out?? Boy just keeps getting left behind somewhere and spit out again somewhere else. Lost in the sauce, time, AND space.
