I saw the future, my love, and in it I was dying on my feet. I forget how, my dear, only there was so much welling up between my fingers. My hands shook and with them clattered my bones and the ever coiling shame inside of my guts.
You held me, dear and close and all things that I might have fit into a verse, if my mouth were shaped for it. If my teeth were made for softness, I would craft for you a sonnet for the ages. Fragmented, as Sappho. Cherished, as Dickinson. Perhaps I might have raised, just for you, a language from the dead.
But my hands were dripping, see. I was stuck, in mud or muck or terrors that have yet to haunt my dreams, and no thing could pull me out. My ribcage lay bare, my love, and from it hung my shredded lungs.
With each of my breaths, they moved, as dead things do when they have not yet realised the road they walk. Wait for me, I- Turn for me. See the tremble in my throat. My vocal chords were knotted, my dear love, and there wasn't a word could pass them but the screaming and the wailing.
My nails were blunt, no matter their drag across my cheeks, no matter the warmth underneath them. They were just keratin and my skin was just soft, and wet. I did not dig steel into my joints, nor copper gone sick with time. It was just bone. It was just flesh.
I saw the future, dearling, and in it I was stripped clean. You held me dear, even in pieces, even hot glued and tacky with plastic moss, and the worst thing was the tenderness of your hands.
— the sun has not yet risen, and the streets are empty still. even the weather sleeps yet. the world has not yet righted itself for the new day.
it is just a dream, dearheart. come to bed. let me weave for you a tapestry of wonder so you might rest your heavy heart. come home to me and leave the ache on the shoe rack in the stair case. line it up neat and brush off the dirt. lay your hands on my chest so i may make from them a poem.
allow me this.
