its always surreal to me to see people praise s2 of centaurworld. s2 was so spectacularly bombastic and aimless and it ended in this awkward forgettable fizzle.

i feel like a dick saying it b/c i really do love the show lmao. or, at least half of it lmao (/stares at tnwk). gf and i've been thinking about rewatching it just to write out our thoughts on why s2 was such a poor follow-up to s1 - from the tone to the setup to all the worldbuilding the narrative had to offer in between the (far more) memorable songs of s1. idk. it's sad because cw really had the bones of a cult classic, but idek if you can call it that.

ive seen a few posts commenting on its lack of popularity, and i feel like it certainly deserves more, b/c i do feel like it's a novel idea made w/ love, but the shift btwn s1 and s2 wasnt just in the plot. there was a full-on *fracture* in the quality and direction and i'm still scratching my head over it. more than i should be, probably. but, it's just a bummer.

im so excited to watch this movie later mostly so i can finally appreciate the full ~fandom experience~

Did you know that BYFs and DNIs exist on the Japanese internet too? A bit ago I spent a while going through Japanese yumejoshi BYFs. I think the parallels between JP riako (real love) culture and EN kin culture are super interesting. Both groups have a "no doubles" culture, with many yumejo asking for people not to follow if they selfship with the same character. They will also ask you not to follow if you know anyone who selfships with their fave, and will list all the characters who their friends have already claimed so you don't try and follow if you overlap.

I think this is so interesting. Why do these parallel cultures pop up but in their different forms?

Within English speaking female-dominated fandoms selfshipping has long been a pretty stigmatized activity, while BL shipping is more the norm. Both of these groups are judged by outsiders, but selfshippers are especially looked down on. Selfshipping is considered unself-aware to the point of delusion to the extent that even straight men doing it are severely judged. BL is obviously incredibly prominent in Japan, but practicing romance through fiction is a lot more normal than it is in America. Straight dating sims have been mainstream hits there, while the entire genre is quite stigmatized in America. "Self insert" is basically an insult in English.

I think for this reason kinning provides a cushion between the self and the character. A way into the universe of the fiction that obscures the self. Shipping characters is (within the social group) much more acceptable, so desired relationship dynamics are filtered through shipping. People even "kindate" which presents a sort of double reacharound back into selfship.

Of course kinning and riako-ing end up attracting stigma anyhow, but I do think people's ideas about norms affect how they proceed with this kind of thing

There are a LOT more contributing factors, but the moral is fandoms is the same and also different

If they announce a s4 I genuinely might have to log tf off. I don't even want to see what sort of dumpster fire it would be. Maybe I'm just being pessimistic, but I don't see much hope for it being good or worthwhile.
