how goes the magpie cloaking? on a related note, do you happen to have any tips for someone attempting a similar project?

Okay so somehow I missed this so uhhhhhh sorry about that! BUT boy howdy does it goes well! Here are some photos from the latest batch I took:

Here is the full jacket in a progress image! The patches haven't been sewn on yet but I started arranging them to see how they'd look and decide roughly where I want them. The "I Voted"-sticker patch is my favorite :)

I mostly tried to keep it pretty random -- I didn't want a "fantasy creatures" or "animals" section on the jacket, for instance -- but I had a few minor exceptions. See:

Sex jokes. (The one on the left is a tagline for a nonprofit, though they changed it recently. If you don't get it try saying it out loud.)

Fishies! Fish are such social creatures in how they school that it's just cruel to separate them, after all.

It was fun to put together little pieces that match, though I'm still not planning on having more themes -- the point of the Magpie Cloak is for it to be eclectic, not planned out, at least for me.

As for tips, I have a few! Here's what I'm thinking off the top of my head:

Pins take up way less space than you think they do. I thought I had a sizeable collection and realized I have a long way to go -- I've covered maybe half or even a third of my goal! That said, I want it to feel more like chain-mail than fabric by the end, so yeah. Patches are your friend for this.

Put it on periodically as you're assembling it. This is for two reasons: one, the fabric hangs a lot differently when it's covered in metal; I actually had two jackets to choose from for this, and was originally going to go for the nicer of the two but I didn't like how the pins changed how the fabric draped, so I'm assembling the other one instead. Secondly, the pins are... potentially kinda uncomfortable depending on what they use as a backing and where they are. When I tried it on with a tank top I realized the metal backing for an enamel pin I had on my shoulder was super scratchy and annoying. Still have to decide if I'm going to move it or just... not wear it with a tank top? We'll see

Laying it all out is a good choice, but when you're happy with the patches, sew them on, and well! For heavier-duty things (I have a decal that's not a pin I intend to hand sew on) I've been recommended using upholstery thread, since it's less likely to break. But yeah, sew those on; it totally changes the look once you start wearing it to try it out. I wasn't happy with it until I put the first patches on

If you're going the route of trying to source pins, talk to people, especially relatives! I mentioned this project and showed off to my grandparents and got literally dozens of pins from their past, including some from when my grandpa was in the army and a flower pin my great-grandma used to wear (none pictured, but will be added in the future...). Now people keep giving me pins as a gift for FREE which is, obviously, the best price to pay for pins. Also, far more importantly, going over the family history of these items has been super meaningful. I am actually so excited to be able to carry all these tiny pieces of family history with me :)

Feathers Reacts: Motorcity - Episode 13 (kind of) - Reunion (definitely)

Hey howdy hello! I'm swapping onto the new viewing order as mentioned in my last post! So this episode is Reunion, labeled Episode 15 in the old viewing order.

Also, I figured out that it's stupid easy to take screenshots using VLC media player (shift + S) and consequently I have a bunch of silly photos to illustrate my ramblings, which brings me great joy.

Episode 13 (15) Thoughts:

Lemme start off by saying that I love sharp-toothed propaganda!Mike. Take your sharp-angled cartoon boy and give him even more angles. A+

Kane is pretty angry at being . . . kidnapped? Dictatornapped? Anyway, his anger seems genuine, but it cannot possibly be this simple. Is he acting??

Oh I guess not, but now we're gonna see more of Deluxe!

Julie, to Mike: In the meantime, be careful up there! Mike: Aren't I always? Everybody else: *VIGOROUS DENIAL*

And he's so surprised by their response, look at that face! XD

Dutch, to ROTH: Stay out of trouble! ROTH: *Happy whirr* *Salute!* I love this little robot so much. (●´□`)♡

I wanted to take a screenshot of Mike with his hand covering Chuck's mouth but I caught a really goofy moment where Mike is in the middle of making a "th" sound and his tongue is sticking out. 🤣

Deluxe is really not very pedestrian friendly; somebody needs to tell Kane about designing livable urban environments.

Looks like Julie isn't the only one with strained family relations! Oh boy, Dutch!

These wanted posters sure are something! Sharp teeth for Mike and Dutch, but what, no fangs for Chuckles?

Chuck: *having a full-on panic attack, gasping for breath* Claire: Is he okay? Mike, oblivious: Yeah, he does this sometimes. :) Uhhhhhh Mike??? Did Chuck tell you that this was just something that happens sometimes and not to worry about it???

Hmmm the Gordy family politics are super interesting. The parents don't support Kane, but they "believe in Deluxe." What does that mean?? It seems like they believe that in the future the people of Deluxe will overthrow Kane. But, uh, are they working towards that in any way? They apparently didn't have contact with Dutch for over a year - which, you know, maybe they couldn't figure out how to get in touch, that's totally plausible.

Claire, you half-hearted revolutionary, how I love you!

The elevator music while they're sitting in Claire's pod is killing me XD

Mike: Your pod won't get a scratch, alright, I'll treat it like it was Mutt! Claire: Wait, doesn't Mutt get wrecked all the time?? Mike: . . . well, yeah . . . but we always fix her up better than before!

Tooley has Kane dolls?? Oh my god

Dutch talking to Dar - oh man - I think the experience of losing a family member off the conspiracy deep end is something that a lot of people find relatable, possibly even moreso now than when this show came out.

Chuck, I really don't think Claire is interested. Chill, please. Don't make her uncomfortable.

Aaaaaaand Dar is playing Rolfe to the Burners' Von Trapps.

Well, if the whole Deluxe grid is down due to power surges, is it too much to hope that all of the bots are down as well?

Mike is a much more successful version of Captain Von Trapp in convincing Dar to abandon his alliance to the military regime.

Aaaaand now Mike is flying a cube hooked up to Mutt. This can only end in EXTREME SPORTS.

Mike just referred to Motorcity by its initials, M.C. I don't think I've heard anyone else do that in the show so far - maybe I missed it!

YEAH JULIE!!! The countdown here actually created a lot of tension, the whole sequence was fantastically well done!

Holy shit, Dutch had to beat up Dar in order to give him a cover story. That's . . . kind of dark if you think about it too hard, actually. Ain't that just the way with most children's cartoons, though?

Texas, to Mike and Dutch: If you two chicks are done holding hands and whatnot, howbout you help me with the new and improved Stronghorn cannon? Texas, be a dear and unlearn some stuff. Cripes.

Can we appreciate how fantastically evil Kane looks in Dar's posters?

And now we get much better décor. :)

Concluding Thoughts:

I'm glad we got some more insight into Dutch and his backstory! The whole Gordy family and their political views are kind of fascinating. I don't necessarily think we were meant to dive too deeply into the implications of their beliefs, but I'm here ten years late with popcorn and living in a political climate that has been dramatically altered by events within the past decade, so let's have fun with it!

Unlike Claire, Mr. and Mrs. Gordy actively denounce Kane (at least, to Dutch) and do perceive the laws of Deluxe to be infringing on the freedoms of its people. However, from what we can see, they've arguably done less to support the resistance.

Now this is partially because Dutch deliberately fell out of contact with them, whereas Julie sees Claire every day. Thus, Claire has more opportunities to passively help the Burners than Dutch's parents. Also, it's not like political opposition to Kane is easy - it would risk their lives, and the life of their youngest son.

The thing that really interests me, though, is the phrase Mr. Gordy used: "I believe in Deluxe." I interpret that as a belief in the people of Deluxe, a belief that they will rise up and overthrow Kane. Leaving aside the question of how or when, it's an interesting thing to say when only part of this show is focused on the internal politics of Deluxe - a lot of it is focused on Deluxe's outwards aggression towards Motorcity. And yet ultimately they're sort of the same city? There are some real life analogies I think that could be drawn here, but I'm gonna leave that for some other time and some other format than my stream-of-consciousness reflections.

Hahaha oh boy. Mostly how fucking stupid I was not doing internships when I had more of the chance and instead chose to go back home every summer. I really, really appreciated it at the time, but whenever I look for wildlife jobs now I just feel so underqualified and completely unprepared. I was stupid and some friends who will see this will never let me forget it.

At this moment what I’m most afraid of is not being able to get a job in my field and not being able to make some kind of meaningful contribution to conservation and stuff.

Brightly sunny with some scattered clouds, but none-the-less it’s cold & crisp. Or it’s night time with moderate rain and wet streets.

Fuck man there can’t be just one. Jazz, Classical, pseudo….electronic-ish stuff???, soundtracks, etc.

Action/Adventure or Comedy.

She’s Saint Francis incarnate, and not just for the animals. Even when people hurt her she will always take the higher path, and I know she has a better moral compass than I do. She’s wise and snarky and loves working the earth with her own hands (Hint: it’s an aunt of mine).

Sagittarius- What do you do when you don’t feel well? What do you eat/drink?

If you’re talking about a cold or something what I tend to do is fill a kettle to the brim and heat up a ton of water, then basically chug tea all day. Specifically chamomile or maybe a lemon tea, but both with some honey. That tends to help me recuperate faster.

Scorpius- If you had to pick someone to betray you, who would you pick?

Probs my friend Owen, ‘cause he’d be the easiest to ignore. 😂

Taurus- What makes you feel comfortable?

Eating food with friends, telling stories and jokes, good music on drives long & short, telling truths and sharing feelings, going to sleep exhausted because I actually did stuff during the day.

Ursa Major- If you had to pick any job to have, what job would you want?

Savior of all Ursus-kind. Or like raising abandoned bear cubs which would be super sad but also super heartwarming.

Virgo- What do you value the most- artistic ability/creativity, musical ability, athletic ability, intellect, or work ethic?

I think I respect work ethic the most - you may not be the most capable, but you’re being honest & earnest, and like a teacher of mine said in the past, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”

Honestly I’m happy to be a follower unless there’s no leader or the leader is incompetent.

Supernova- How do you feel about yourself?

Kind of unhappy, for the reasons mentioned in Comet. Kind of annoyed at how it feels like I’m procrastinating on starting my own life, whether that’s intentional or not.

Supergiant- What’s something you like about yourself?

People have told me they feel comfortable talking to me about issues and stuff and I really, really like that I can be that kind of person for my friends.

Red Giant- Would you get into a debate/argument with someone if you heard them saying something you disagree with or know to be wrong, or would you stay silent?

It depends. If they’re just talking with their own group and I’m not going to be stuck near them for hours, then I can just put headphones in, but if they’re making someone uncomfortable or something, I’d step in. I’d also step in if it was an honest mistake.

Red Dwarf- What’s your favorite smell? What smell makes you feel most comfortable?

Pine trees I think. I loooooooooooooooove the smell of pine.

I finally beat Dragon’s Dogma the other day and I was scared I was going to be disappointed because I already kind of knew about the existential take it…. takes, but it was a blast and wonderful and amazing and I think everyone who likes rpg’s should play this game and Grigori is a huge…. sweetheart, of sorts.
