“What time zone are you in?” Splinter's voice on the other end of the line made Leo smile a little.
"The same as you are, dad, we're just further south," he explained. "Is everything okay on your end? Verne's coming to visit you? Are you taking your medicine?"
"Yes, yes, stop worrying, Leonardo, you're on holidays!" Splinter scolded him gently, amused. You'd wonder who at this point was the son and who the father. "Enjoy yourself my son."
"Oh, he is Master Splinter!" Amelia leaned in over Leo, interrupting the call. "We're all hard at work to make sure he does!"
"And for that I'm grateful my child!" Splinter replied with laughter.
It was day 3 of their island adventure. Everyone managed to kepp Leo away from the phone for one and a half of a day, not counting the day of the arrival in their attempts.
It was the late morning at the beach. Jennika, Raph and Mikey were swim racing. Cheryl, Mirka and Amelia were lounging on the towels, catching some sun while Kara and Donnie were engineering some sort of sand fortress. Peter and Sprinkles were cheering for the racers.
Leo smiled, feeling the rays of the sun warm his skin up. This... this was so nice. He stretched and laid down next to Amelia. She looked at him warmly and scatched his head. Maybe he really did deserve to rest?
--88--
<I think we are about 89% done.> Kara admired her and Donnie's creation. <How's our water access?>
<The water pump needs small tweaking but it should be good to go either way,> Donnie said.
The duo grinned and picked up from the fortress' floor two SuperSoakers. Slightly modified by the genius couple.
--88--
Mikey lost his interest in the race quite quickly. He was too distracted by the colourful coral reef below the surface of the ocean. He left behind Jennika and Raph.
Nothing like this in the sewers of New York. He watched a manta ray majestically swim by. A sea turtle was eating some crab. There were so many colourful fish and other critters. Mikey was just enchanted by it all. He wanted to stay there forever.
--88--
"I totally won!" Raph snorted the sea water, trying to push it out of his nose.
Jennika shoved him. "Bull! Guys! It had to be me!" She looked at both Peter and Sprinkles.
"Sorry, Raph, Jenni won," Peter confirmed.
"HA!" Jennika stuck her tongue at Raph then laughed and ran to Cheryl. "Cherrybomb! I won!"
"That's great hu- NO! DON'T TOUCH ME YOU'RE COLD AND WE-" Rest of the sentence was dissolved in shrieks and manical laughter.
Raph huffed and glared after the female turtle. He'll win next time.
"Where's Mikey?" Sprinkles frowned and looked around.
Peter looked around. "I can't see him."
"He threw in the race after third lap!" Raph called back, unbothered. "Mirka! cheer me up!" He opened up his arms approaching the sunbathing group.
Cheryl was still trying to fight off her girlfriend. Mirka looked up. Seeing their boyfriend approach with similar intent as Jenni, they got up and started backing away.
"No! Stay back, you FUAAAAA!!" They got grabbed in a bear hug and picked up in the air.
Leo's eye cracked open. "Are they dying?"
"Nope," Amelia replied, glad she wasn't involved in the shenanigans of the two bruisers.
"A'igh." Leo's eye closed.
Suddenly Donnie's voice boomed across the beach.
"Attention vacationers!"
He and Kara were standing on top of their structure, which they have been building for the past two days. Both had SuperSoakers in their hands, posing like in an action film.
"There are weapons hidden across this beach! May the best win!" He finished on sinister note.
"What the f-" Raph started then a sharp stream of see water hit him straight in the mouth.
Everyone, except Leo, scrambled for cover.
"The fuck you mean there are weapon?" Amelia started searching sand with her hands.
Jennika eyed a particularly odd shaped rock and lifted it up. Under it she found a cache of water filled balloons and a couple of water pistols. "I guess this." She grinned sinisterly grabbing a ballon.
Amelia and Jennika exchanged looks. "Oh, it's on."
The beach turned in a full blown battle, with random alliences forming and dissolving. But everyone (minus Leo and Mikey) came together to take down the Fortress. It was a tough and historical battle as Donnie and Kara prepared traps for the brave souls willing to storm their stronghold.
The fight has been fierce but the two overlords have been finally defeated by the people.
Cheers and laughter has erupted as the Beach Water Battle of 2023 has concluded.
<So this leaves only one thing,> Kara signed after tossing her weapon aside.
Everyone looked at her in high spirit, wondering what else there was. Slowly, she pointed to Leo who was still basking peacefully despite the chaos that had happened around him. Everyone grinned.
Leo was woken up by a feeling. A gut feeling he was in danger. The shadow has fell over him. He rolled to his side and looked at the circle of people around him. He noticed the water balloons.
"Hiiii, Leeeooo~," Jennika greeted him. "Didja have a good nap?"
"Uh-huh..." Slowly, as carefully as he could, he readied his body for the only one possible solution in this... He sprung up to run.
"Get him!!"
And that was the scene Mikey walked in on coming back from the ocean.
"What did I miss??" He looked confused at Sprinkles who decided to sit out the great Leo derby.
"A water fight," Sprinkles replied and looked at the fishing net full of crabs. "Watcha got there?"
"Dinner!"

Ms. Marvel #31 Review
spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers spoilers
It the fiftieth issue of Ms. Marvel (50th when you combine the two series together) and what better way to celebrate such an achievement than to have a good old fashioned slumber party!  If only the various duties and demands of being a superhero could allow for a such a thing.  A bunch of impromptu adventures and ordeals notwithstanding, Kamala and her buddies end up having a pretty great night.  All from the creative team of… deep breath… G. Willow Wilson, Nico Leon, Ian Herring, Saladin Ahmed,  Gustavo Durate, Rainbow Rowell, Bob Quinn, Hasan Minhaj, Elmo Bondoc, Valero Schiti, Rachelle Rosenberg and Stephanie Hans.  Recap and review following the jump.
Kamala has been campaigning her mother for weeks to allow her to have her friends over for a slumber party.  The whole idea of a sleep-over is rather perplexing to Mrs. Khan, but she has finally agreed and Kamal could not be more excited.  Everything is ready.  There’s popcorn, chips, chi, the idea game system is ready to go and pizza is on the way… Kamala has even set her room up with strings of Christmas tree lights to set the perfect mood.
Tumblr media
Her friends, Nakia, Mike and Zoe arrive and they jump right into the gossip and giggling.  Along with having fun, Kamala is also hoping her pals can help her work her confused and anxious feelings over having kissed Kareem and her possibly still having feelings for Bruno.
Tumblr media
Mike is surprisingly chill with the fact that Kamala may have a crush on her former boyfriend, Bruno.  Nakia is concerned that Kamala has done something so brash as to kiss a boy.  Oh yeah, and Zoe recently went out on a date (most likely with Alana, Neftali’s sister introduced int he previous issue).  Yet before they can get into any of this important stuff the conversation is interrupted by a strange barking from outside.
Well, Kamala knows exactly what sort of creature makes that distinctive bark and she furtively sneaks into her Ms. Marvel guise to see what sort of mischief Lockjaw has gotten himself into.
Tumblr media
Here Willow and Leon hand the story-telling duties over to Ahmed and Durate for a fun jaunt in which Ms, M and Lockjaw try to rescue a kitten who has teleporting powers of his own.  Chasing this cat takes the trio all over the galaxy, even to an alien planet... yet it isnt long before Ms. Marvel realizes that Lockjaw and the kitten are just having fun chasing each other.  She has no time for such games, she has a slumber party to get back to.
Tumblr media
Ms. Marvel leaves Lockjaw and teleporting kitty to their fun and returns home to find her mom making samosas for her guests.  Mmmm samosa.  Yet before Kamala can join in the doorbell rings, the pizzas have arrived.   Here the story is taken over by Rowell and Quinn.  The young woman delivering the pizzas is a rather irascible sort who becomes aggressively resentful when she finds that she is delivering pies to a slumber party.  Oh, and she smells terrible… like supernaturally bad.
Tumblr media
Once again donning her Ms. Marvel duds, Kamala chases down the pizza delivery girl to investigate.  It turns out that her name is Samantha.  Like Ms. Marvel, she is an Inhuman who was transformed by way of exposure to the Terrigen Cloud.  Rather than receiving neat super abilities, however, Samantha was bestowed with ‘skunk-like’ powers.  Her hair took on a distinctive white streak and she can emit a terrible, noxious odor whenever she feels anxious, threatened or even irritated.
It’s all just about ruined poor Samantha’s life.  No one wants to hang out with someone so stinky.  She’s a young adult, still learning how to handle her feelings and mood and hence barely able to control these smelly powers.  And finding that she was delivering pizzas to a slumber party just filled her with jealous rage.
Rather than fighting, the two talk it out.  Terrigenesis is a lot like adolescence… it is sort of like a lottery and is by no means fair.  Some are endowed with cool, useful transformations, other are saddled with unfortunate, almost debilitating transformations.
Tumblr media
It’s not all that different the kind of changes that adolescents have to contend with as they go through maturation.  And it is also rather random and never fair.  Some become tall, slender or have flawless skin, whilst others have to deal with acne, super awkward growth spurts, or just smell terrible.
Neither Kamala nor Samantha the Skunk Girl can go back to the lives they had prior to Terrigenesis, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t carve out new lives, make their own paths.  Samantha has no interest in being a super hero or anything like that, but that doesn’t mean that she cannot get help from people such as the Avengers or Inhumans of New Attilan.  With time and training she can learn to control her odor-based powers, keep them suppressed and even use them to her advantage if the need were to ever arise.   Having solved that problem, Kamala returns to her party.  Yet it is not long before yet another crisis arrives.  She receives an emergency text from her Champion team-mate, Spider-Man/Miles Morales.  Well, it turns out that the villainous Arnim Zola has plans to poison the water supply of Manhattan and Miles needs Kamala’s shrinking abilities to help him break into the city’s central pumping station and reroute the poison.
Tumblr media
This tale is told by the team of Minhaj and Bondoc.  There are some hiccups, but Miles and Kamala are ultimately able to foil Zola’s diabolic plans.  And yet there’s something sort of off about Miles.  He reveals that he may have come into possession of an Infinity Stone, the mood stone to be precise.   wait, the mood stone???
Pretty certain this isn’t an Infinity Stone Miles has gotten ahold of… maybe it’s the mood-affecting ring The Mandarin used to wield.  Whatever the case, it seems to have an effect on Miles, causing him to be more forward and open with his thoughts and feelings.  It leads him to blurting out the fact that he thinks Ms. Marvel is terrific, and pretty, and, well it’s all quite embarrassing for him.  Although, Miles does admit that being so frank and open does feel rather liberating.  And this helps Kamala realize that maybe it’s time for her to lighten her load as well.
Tumblr media
Kamala finally makes it home where Nakia, Zoe and Mike have been patiently waiting for her.  Kamala decided to come clean nd rather than concocting some lie to explain where she has been she tells them that she is Ms. Marvel.
And they’re all like, ‘yeah, no duh.’
Tumblr media
They all knew, have known for quite a while.  Kamala hasn’t exactly been proficient in hiding her secret identity and it was pretty easy for her close friends to put two and two together.  Heck, even Gabe, Kamala’s step-brother, has figured the matter out.    None of them have said anything about in that they figured it was her business and she’d tell them when she was ready.   It’s a nice, cathartic relief for Kamala to share this secret and she is wonderfully surprised to find her friends so supportive of it all.  They all hug and it’s really quite a sweet moment.  And it is here that this fun, goofy romp of an issue comes to an end.
Tumblr media
What a blast.  The whole issue acts as sort of a patchwork anthology.  And each side-story works as a sort of encapsulation of the distinct qualities that makes Ms. Marvel such a wonderful comic...
The Lockjaw story by Ahmed and Durate highlights to wacky silliness that so often finds its way into the tales, the moments of screwball levity that balances out the heavier, more poignant themes.
The Skunk Girl encounter by Rowell and Quinn addresses the comic’s powerful knack to create moving parallels to real life matters, especially in terms of the trials and tribulations of growing up.
Minhaj and Bondoc’s Spider-Man team-up adventure showcases the comic’s ability for good old fashioned comic book action and intrigue, where the adventures are always peppered by a progressive development and cultivation of both the main and supporting characters.
And the over arching frame of the slumber party, by Wilson and Leon, shows off the heart of the series: Kamala herself: a dynamic, fully fleshed out and multifaceted character who is just absolutely lovable, relatable and endlessly fun to read about.
It’s a pretty neat idea that the issue kind of dissects the individual components that makes Ms. Marvel such a great book and offer up each component in vignette spot-light form.  It makes for a very fun read as well as a good book for those out there looking bettie understand the craft of good storytelling.  It’s all kind of like a baking recipe done up in a comic book formate.
Tumblr media
Before wrapping, up I feel a special shout out is deserving to Ian Herring, who provides the coloring for the entire issues.  The various illustrators depicting the different side stories all have rather distinctive styles… yet Herring is able to color them all with a unifying pallet that provides a terrific sense of continuity wherein the shifts are not jarring in the least.  This is something Herring has excelled at throughout all fifty issues of Ms. Marvel.  Whether the issues have been illustrated by Adrian Alphona, Takeshi Miyazawa, Mirka Andolfo, Jacob Wyatt, Nico Leon or anyone else, Herring has been able to utilize his coloring to maintain a sense of constancy… a visual flavor that is distinctive and unique to Ms. Marvel.  It’s really quite impressive.
Highest possible recommendation.  Five out of five Lockjaws!

September-October 2018 Featured Creator
What is a Featured Creator?
Write Way Studio’s “Featured Creator” segment is my way of showing appreciation for the creators of the world.  Creative outlets are limitless, because there is no end to human imagination.  Every month shows the succeeding featured creator.  If you would like to be a part of this collaborative project, contact me at [email protected]!
Time for a quick update to the segment: that my Featured Creators will be holding two months instead of one after our one year mark!
My twelfth guest creator is an artist known as SinG, marking the one year anniversary of my Featured Creator segment!
Introduction
She is Gabriella Sinopoli to normal people.  But with her art, she is known as SinG, a nickname is a mishmash of her surname and the first letter of her first name.  On July 26th this year, she turned thirty-three years old.  Her biggest job yet?  Being a mom!
She mentioned that her official job, though, is being a “Comic Colorist.”  While she is a freelancer, she mostly works for an “art studio [called] Arancia Studio.”  She has also has worked as a colorist and/or an assistant with Italian editors, such as Panini Comics!  For a comic recently released in the United States by Image Comic named Unnatural by “the wonderful and amazing artist Mirka Andolfo,” she revealed that she “was also one of the assistants [for the comic].”  Currently, she is an assistant colorist for a comic with a French editorial house called Glènat.
With concerns to her education, she participated in an art school affiliated with her high school.  But university stayed out of reach.  So she is mostly self-taught!  A few things she’s learned with her job, on the other hand, revealed what truly matters:  “what you can do, being serious . . . [and staying] punctual with the deadlines.”
What Sparked the Creator Passion?
A Little Dream with a Big Spark
When asked this question in particular, Gabriella recalled how “I drew ever since I can remember [with] a strong passion for cartoons and videos games.”  As she grew older, she realized that she wanted to work in comics.  Unfortunately, her high school teachers were unsupportive and attempted to discourage her from that path.  So instead of what she wanted, she diverted and “[focused on] graphic and web design.”
But she never gave up her dream for one second.  And when the opportunity arrived for her to make it a reality, she took it!  She has a lot of catching up to do, or as she put it “still running and working hard every single day so that one day I’ll realize my dream, which is to make y very own comic published.”
Comic Encouragement
When she was eight, she read a manga for the first time, Dragon Ball Volume 25.  After that pivotal read, she became more interested in the comics universe.  She has a particular passion for shonen (or young boy) manga, as she is “very addicted to Boku no Hero Academia, the masterpiece of the amazing Horikoshi Kohei.”  The series is known as My Hero Academia in English.  While she has mostly read manga most of her life, another influence of hers happens to be the U.S. comic companies like Marvel and D.C., both of which focus on super humans and heroics.
When it comes to artists, she noted how “I find inspiration in [arts that] appeal [to] me.”  As her dream is coming to fruition, nevertheless, she has been strongly influenced by Mirka Andolfo, the previously mentioned creator of the comic Unnatural.   She admires her, from her determination, dedication, and staying humble.  SinG thinks that this should be a standard that artists reach for, of people admiring and using the admiration to reach for what they want.  There is a huge list of artists she admires.
Her close friend and artist extraordinaire “RaRo, or Rosalia Radosti,” helped to fill the gaps in her artistic training and continues to do so.  She is also a pillar of support for her in the dark moments of doubt.  Then there is her husband and children, all very important in her life as she reaches her goals!
The following is her final statement that concluded the matter: “Having people that support you is really one of the best things one can hope for, but [it] also [gives you the] boost you need to go on and run, as fast as you can, to reach your dreams.”
Future Projects
Believe it or not, SinG wants to create her own comic!  She is currently hard at work to bridge the gap of necessary experience to make it a reality, especially with adequately adding to her work portfolio.  For now, she practices her art style.  She plans on also creating a few fan-made comics for things she loves.
Hopefully, she will be hired as a comic colorist in the near future for comic editorials or a comic company.
Where To Find You? Support You?
Luckily, Gabriella is available on multiple online platforms.  She is more active with Twitter and Tumblr compared to the others.  Keep that in mind as you search for her!

Last Tidbits
In the words of Gabriella, she is an “incurable fangirl.”  When anything catches her eye, she cannot fight the urge to fan-art like crazy!  Amusingly, when it comes to romantic or sensual moments in her artwork, her face remains ablaze and shifts continuously from one weird face to another during the entire drawing process.  The job will get done either way.  But she wishes so much for no one to see her as she draws it!

Collaboration Disclaimer
The information provided in my Featured Creator articles is, in fact, from the real people, not some random Internet bot.  I do not use random stock photos to fill an imaginary photo quota.  Any photos in the Featured Creator segment are provided by the creators with permission to use them in this manner.  I want to support the original person behind the work, not a random online copycat creeping around.
To Gabriella,
I really appreciate you working with me on this segment.  I know it was crammed, much more than what is most likely recommended (or dared.)  Despite the problems, it was still a lot of fun to learn more about you as both a person and an artist.  You have a detailed style and distinctive coloring method that I cannot help but adore!  You also happen to be one of my inspirations to getting back into my art again and staying confident with myself in what I do.  It has been a long year for me, and I think encountering you and your work really helped to put me in perspective.  I thank you for that, even if you did that unknowingly.
I can only hope you enjoyed this as much as I did!  Maybe if I finally manage to visit Italy, we can have a proper obsession session about All Might.  I know that you will do so much for the art world, one fan art at a time.
Sincerely,
Jasmine Love

Roger Federer's last presence in an official match dates back to January 30, 2020, when in Melbourne, the Swiss champion was defeated in three sets in the semifinal against current world number one Novak Djokovic. We are undoubtedly talking about an extremely bruised Roger, fresh from the comebacks and in some ways enterprises first against John Millman in the third round and then in the quarter-finals against the American Tennys Sandgren. These two challenges have literally 'drained' physically the twenty-time Grand Slam title champion who arrived exhausted at the umpteenth clash of his career against Nole, a great rival and star of great clashes with him. Both in that edition and in the past, the organizers of the tournament and in general all of Australia have adopted King Roger and for the first time in 23 years the tournament will be orphaned of the Swiss champion. In the balance until a few weeks ago Roger Federer announced, through his agent Tony Godsick, that he will not participate in the Australian Open. According to some close to the Swiss champion, the quarantine imposed by the government facilitated the choice of Federer who preferred to postpone his return to the field. Five weeks away from his wife Mirka and his children were not particularly sustainable for the almost 40-year-old Federer. According to Gilles Simon, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic can find their A-game in the crucial moments with greater frequency than their peers. That, the Frenchman believes, comes from their immense self-belief and understanding of their game.
Gilles Simon on the Big 3
"Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic know themselves like no other that's why they are able to keep their level in the important moments," said Gilles Simon. "Even more they can go higher which is colossal." Gilles Simon further claimed that Nadal, Federer and Djokovic have unparalleled confidence levels, arising out of their continuous success on tour. But Simon also pointed out that at the end of the day, the Big 3 are simply better players than the rest of the field. "First I think that they naturally have a high level of confidence because they win all the time," added Simon. "When you played youth competitions you increased your level by winning three or four matches in a row. Tour's life is so different. Second, they are overall stronger (at tennis)." These are some of the best moments that Federer has had at the Australian Open. Although he will be 40 next year, fans will hope that they’ll get to see him in Melbourne in 2022 as well.

CONFUCIAN DREAM
Director: Mijie Li
Filmmaker Mijie Li's first feature (she co-produced Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert's American Factory), Confucian Dream is an observational documentary about a Chinese woman's embrace of the ancient philosophy of Confucianism and how it affects her family.
Chaoyan, a young wife and mother, believes the ancient teachings of Confucianism will restore balance, respect and morality to her home. She involves her four-year-old son in the rigorous routine of chanting daily mantras. Little Chen may not yet understand the recitations' meanings, but mom is confident she's planting a seed for the future.
Chaoyan's husband finds the daily practice excessive, and indeed many Chinese people today criticize it as feudalistic, conservative, and counter-revolutionary. While Confucianism's primary purpose is to instill peace and harmony, the opposite occurs between Chaoyan and her husband as their beliefs clash and their arguments escalate, bringing forth a gripping portrait of marital and parental crisis.
DVD (Mandarin with English Subtitles) / 2019 / 82 minutes
FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO
Director: Daniel Karslake
FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO, a new documentary that explores the intersection of religion, sexual orientation and gender identity in current-day America.
The arrival of marriage equality was seen by many as the pinnacle achievement of the march toward full equality for LGBTQ people. But for many on the Right, it was the last straw, and their public backlash has been swift, severe and successful. In collaboration with religious conservatives, politicians are invoking both the Bible and the U.S. Constitution in their campaigns for the 'religious freedom' to legally discriminate. By telling the stories of four families struggling with these issues, the film offers healing and understanding to those caught in the crosshairs of scripture, sexuality, and identity.
DVD / 2019 / 91 minutes
WHO'S NEXT?
Directed by Nancy Cooperstein Charney
Examines the effects of hate speech and bigotry on the lives of Muslim-Americans.
WHO'S NEXT? examines how the lives of Muslim-Americans have been affected in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks. It focuses on six Muslim families-citizens and long-time legal residents-from diverse countries and widely different circumstances. In one way or another all of them have been targeted by federal agencies, hate groups, and even former friends solely on the basis of their religious beliefs.
Family separations, threats of deportation, repeated airport detentions, unexplained travel restrictions, have become part of the daily lives of thousands of Muslims who are innocent of any crimes or even suspicious behavior. If one group can be singled out because of their religious beliefs then who's next?
The film encourages us all to choose knowledge over ignorance, take action to prevent hate speech, and to welcome strangers into our lives so that the challenges of marginalized communities can be effectively addressed.
DVD / 2019 / (Grades 5 -12, College, Adult) / 88 minutes

Though the neighborhood is home to the largest volunteer ambulance corps in the world known as Hatzolah, that organization has steadfastly banned women from its ranks. Now Ruchie and an engaging cast of dogged Hasidic women are risking their reputations, and the futures of their children, by taking matters into their own hands to provide dignified emergency medical care to the Hasidic women and girls of Borough Park. In a society where most women don't drive-and a few minutes can mean the difference between life and death-how do female EMTs transport themselves to the scene of an emergency? And how does Ezras Nashim combat a behemoth like Hatzolah, which possesses political clout throughout New York City?
With unprecedented and exclusive access, 93QUEEN follows the formation and launch of Ezras Nashim through the organization's first year on the ground. We witness the highs and lows of creating an organization against incredible odds, as well as the women's struggles to "have it all" as wives and mothers. And in the midst of this already ground-breaking endeavor, Ruchie announces that she had decided to take her burgeoning feminism even further when she enters the race for civil court judge in Brooklyn's 5th Municipal Court District. Through it all, we see Ruchie and the other women grappling to balance their faith with their nascent feminism, even as they are confronted by the patriarchal attitudes that so dominate Hasidic society. As Ruchie observes, while making dinner at 3 a.m., "I sometimes wonder why God created me a woman. If I'd have been born a Hasidic man, I don't think I would have half the problems I have."

BRIDGE MASTER'S DAUGHTER, THE
Directors: Matthew Leahy & Elisa Stone
In the remote Andean highlands of Peru, Victoriano Arisapana cares for the woven footbridge that has stretched over the gorge for hundreds of years. The secrets of this bridge, the only one left from the ancient Incan empire, have been passed down by the men of Victoriano's family for 300 years. Victoriano is the Bridge Master, the one who has inherited the sacred task of weaving the bridge and of making the sacrificial offerings to the mountain spirits each year. Like his father before him, he has begun to pass on these secrets to his children.
The children in these villages walk for miles each day to reach their school, where they are given glimpses of another world, far from the adobe huts of their families. And when they reach their final year, these students each make their own choice: whether they will remain in their close-knit but very primitive communities, or whether they will follow the possibilities that await in the city.
Among those who face these crossroads are Vidal, Yuri, and Laurita, the children of the Bridge Master. To stay is to embrace a rich culture and an honored heritage, but the price is a difficult, arduous future. To go could mean a whole world of financial, relational and personal fulfillment, but Victoriano, the last Bridge Master, would be left alone.

FARMSTEADERS
Directed by Shaena Mallett
Follows Nick and Celeste Nolan and their young family on a journey to resurrect Nick's grandfather's dairy farm as agriculture moves toward large-scale farming.
FARMSTEADERS is a love story, a farm story, and a story of contemporary rural America. Nick Nolan, his wife Celeste, and their young family are on a journey to resurrect his grandfather's dairy farm - fighting to keep this homeland from "drying up and blowing away," something that has happened to about 4.7 million farms in the U.S. as the pressures of corporate-driven food have left deep scars in the region.
Director Shaena Mallet points an honest and tender lens at the beauty and hardship of everyday life on a family farm, as the Nolans work to balance their fears and hopes with so much at stake.
Nick and Celeste's meditations on life, legacy, and resistance bring complexity and depth to the national conversation and characterization of the rural white American. For the Nolans, only three things remain certain: family is everything, nothing ever stays the same, and the land holds it all together.

YOURS IN SISTERHOOD
By Irene Lusztig
YOURS IN SISTERHOOD is a performative, participatory documentary inspired by the breadth and complexity of letters that were sent in the 1970s to the editor of Ms.- America's first mainstream feminist magazine. The film documents hundreds of strangers from around the U.S. who were invited to read aloud and respond to these letters written by women, men and children from diverse backgrounds. Collectively, the letters feel like an encyclopedia of both the 70s and the women's movement- an almost literal invocation of the second-wave feminist slogan "the personal is political." The intimate, provocative, and sometimes heartbreaking conversations that emerge from these performances invite viewers to think about the past, present, and future of feminism.

ONLY ME GENERATION - AN INTROSPECTIVE LOOK INTO CHINA'S ONE-CHILD POLICY
The one-child policy, a part of China's family planning policy, was a population planning policy of installed by the Chinese government. It was introduced in 1979 and began to be formally phased out in 2015
"Only Me Generation" is a documentary that explores the effects of the China's "One Child Policy" from the perspective of the policy's first generation point of view.
Almost 30 years ago, the Chinese government first introduced the "one child policy" to alleviate social, economic and environmental problems. Three decades later, they are now looking at a relaxation of the policy. The result is that the babies born under the current policy are a unique population set with issues and challenges that are different from those of other Chinese generations; most notably that they grew up as "only children".
This film provides a unique look into a unprecedented government policy that changed the rules of a society, impacted far more than a generation, and can now be studied on a variety of fronts. The film raises numerous questions and serves as a wonderful launching point for discussion and debate.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of "only children" in a generation of only "only children"?
What are the pressures that these children, the results of the policy, have lived under?
How have parental expectations changes due to family limits on the number of children permitted?
What are their social experiences now that these Only Me Generation children are now adults?
What are the ramifications, if any, of relaxing the policy now after so many years?

SIBERIAN LOVE
By Olga Delane
In rural Siberia, romantic expectations are traditional and practical. The man is the head of the household. The woman takes care of the housekeeping and the children. But filmmaker Olga Delane doesn't agree. While she was born in this small Siberian village, as a teenager she migrated to Berlin with her family, and 20 years of living in Germany has changed her expectations. SIBERIAN LOVE follows Delane home to her community of birth, where she interviews family and neighbors about their lives and relationships. Amusing and moving, this elegant film paints a picture of a world completely outside of technology, a hard-farming community where life is hard and marriage is sometimes unhappy - but where there are also unexpected paths to joy and family togetherness. Through clashing ideals of modern and traditional womanhood, SIBERIAN LOVE is a fascinating study of a country little known in the US and of a rural community that raises questions about domesticity, gender expectations, domestic abuse, childcare, and romance. WHAT OUR FATHERS DID: A NAZI LEGACY
Directed by David Evans
Two elderly men possess starkly contrasting attitudes towards their high-ranking Nazi fathers. A study of brutality, self-deception, guilt and the nature of justice.
A bracingly rigorous examination of inherited guilt and pain, WHAT OUR FATHERS DID explores the relationship between two men, each of whom are the children of very high-ranking Nazi officials but possess starkly contrasting attitudes toward their fathers.
The film was written and is hosted by eminent human rights lawyer Philippe Sands, who became fascinated by its central figures, Niklas Frank and Horst von Wachter, while researching the Nuremberg trials.
The film comes to a climax when they travel to Lviv in Ukraine, where it becomes clear that Frank and von Wachter's Nazi fathers were responsible for the annihilation of Sands' own Jewish grandfather's entire family. WHAT OUR FATHERS DID is a compelling examination of brutality, self-deception, guilt and the nature of justice.
"This is both an intensely personal story for me as well as one with contemporary and universal relevance as anti-Semitism spreads across Europe and the wounds created in Ukraine during WWII can still be felt today." - Philippe Sands

STRAY DOG
Directed by Debra Granik
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Debra Granik ("Winter's Bone") returns to SW Missouri for her first documentary, looking at the life of Vietnam vet, Ron "Stray Dog" Hall, and shattering some stereotypes.
Ron "Stray Dog" Hall lives in Southern Missouri where he owns and operates the At Ease RV Park. After years of living alone with his dogs, he is adjusting to life with his wife, Alicia, who is newly arrived from Mexico. Anchored by his small dogs and big bikes, Stray Dog seeks to strike a balance between his commitment to his family, neighbors, biker brotherhood, and fellow veterans. As part of the legacy of fighting in the Vietnam War, he wrestles with the everlasting puzzle of conscience, remorse, and forgiveness.
With Stray Dog as our guide, we experience the restlessness of ex-warriors as he tries to make peace with what he can't change and weathers the incomprehension of those who have never been to war. Stray Dog navigates the pressures of everyday life including the economic survival of his grandchildren and the increasing poverty of his community. The arrival of Alicia's twin sons from Mexico throws into harsh relief the current state of opportunity that newcomers seek and that America can or cannot offer.
Stray Dog continues to tally the cost of war, bearing witness to the soldiers coming home from Iraq and Afghanistan: both the dead and the living. The questions of contemporary American life loom larger and thornier, leaving us to wonder what is next for Stray Dog and his blended, multi-ethnic family.

FORGET ME NOT: LOSING MEMORY - FINDING LOVE
Directed by David Sieveking
An astonishingly candid, loving and revelatory chronicle of the changes his mother's Alzheimer's disease has on the filmmaker's family.
Leading documentary filmmaker David Sieveking (David Wants to Fly) weaves an astonishingly candid, loving and revelatory chronicle of the changes his mother's Alzheimer's has on his family.
Although dealing with his mother's disease is painful, caring for her does offer Sieveking a chance to reconnect with his family and immerses himself in the secrets and passions of his parents long and fascinating life. Some stories are heroic, while others have left a painful legacy in the couple's long marriage.
Throughout, Sieveking's delicate handling of these revelations moves the focus of the story away from his mother's irreversible mental decline to that of a loving tribute to his mother as a human being with a remarkable life story. What emerges is a poignant and rich study of family ties, the delicate nature of marriage, and the unexpected rewards that come from living life to the fullest.

WOMEN'S KINGDOM, THE
By Xiaoli Zhou
Keepers of one of the last matriarchal societies in the world, Mosuo women in a remote area of southwest China live beyond the strictures of mainstream Chinese culture - enjoying great freedoms and carrying heavy responsibilities.
Beautifully shot and featuring intimate interviews, this short documentary offers a rare glimpse into a society virtually unheard of 10 years ago and now often misrepresented in the media. Mosuo women control their own finances and do not marry or live with partners; they practice what they call "walking marriage." A man may be invited into a woman's hut to spend a "sweet night," but must leave by daybreak. While tourism has brought wealth and 21st century conveniences to this remote area, it has also introduced difficult challenges to the Mosuo culture - from pollution in the lake, to the establishment of brothels, to mainstream ideas about women, beauty and family. This finely wrought film is a sensitive portrayal of extraordinary women struggling to hold on to their extraordinary society.

Wimbledon -- Roger Federer's comeback tale just retains obtaining additional unbelievable

Peter BodoTennis
Near
Peter Bodo has been masking tennis for more than 35 yrs, mainly not long ago for ESPN. He is a former WTA Writer of the 12 months and the creator of various textbooks, which include the basic “The Courts of Babylon” and the New York Periods bestseller (with Pete Sampras), “A Champion’s Mind.”
In his moment of doubt, wanting to know how much of a foreseeable future he even now experienced in tennis just after consistently slipping limited in Grand Slam finals, Roger Federer turned to his support group of relatives members, trainers and coaches. He questioned them for an sincere reply to the concern every single player faces when his body commences to give out, his generation stalls and the internet pages on the calendar seem to be to be flying by.
Do I even now have it — can I even now win a big?
“Fundamentally the reply was constantly the very same from them,” Federer explained to the media Sunday just after successful his next Grand Slam title of the calendar year [19th general] at Wimbledon. “[They said] that they imagined if you’re 100 % healthful and you’re well-organized, you’re eager to enjoy, then anything’s achievable.”
Just after successful his eighth singles title at the All England Club, a dapper Roger Federer carries his trophy at the Wimbledon Winners Meal. Getty Photographs
Seems very simple, but bear in mind that when Federer questioned that concern he was fast approaching 35 on a negative knee. He organized as best he could, but no make any difference what he did, the effects just were not there he’d shed in his past a few Grand Slam finals. And he was something but eager to soldier on just after Milos Raonic steamrolled more than him and his aching knee in the 2016 Wimbledon semis.
In truth, Federer was so dejected that he made the decision to simply call it quits for the calendar year.
That’s when he questioned the concern. That’s when his devoted spouse, Mirka, coaches Severin Luthi and Ivan Ljubicic, and other people expressed the self-confidence that he repaid in spades Sunday in London. When all the aspects are tolled and set into context, Federer’s resurgence in 2017 will consider its position in the Comebacks Corridor of Fame.
Federer said he realized he could enjoy “wonderful” all over again one day. But even he failed to dare visualize that it would be with a upper-scenario “G.” He said he may well have laughed if another person explained to him he would win two majors this calendar year, telling his interlocutors, “I guess you would have laughed, also.”
Roger Federer is a men’s document eight-time Wimbledon champion, successful his next Grand Slam of the calendar year in impeccable vogue by not dropping a set all through the two-week match.
Even Roger Federer has trouble describing his renaissance. But here he is, a Wimbledon champion for an eighth time.
As extended as he is healthful, Roger Federer programs to enjoy skilled tennis, but even he does not know how much lengthier that window will stay open up.
two Related
But here he is all over again. And many thanks to his stunning 31-two document, he is on observe to have one of the finest yrs any one has appreciated. He also will by vying with his occupation nemesis Rafael Nadal, another player reborn in this astonishing calendar year, for the calendar year-end No. 1 rating.
That contest is anything neither Federer nor Nadal experienced anticipated. Nadal is just about five yrs younger than Federer, but he grinds by his matches whilst Federer skates more than them. Nadal has endured additional occupation-impacting injuries than the Swiss star, which helps make his possess renaissance this calendar year comparably remarkable. Like Federer, Nadal has embraced a trio of priorities: stay healthful, love the journey and win another big, or additional.
Getting to be embroiled in a dogfight for the No. 1 rating has been the furthest matter from either player’s head. That’s one motive Federer skipped the entire clay-court segment and the French Open and Nadal chose to forgo grass-court tuneup activities for Wimbledon. But Federer, up to No. 3 in the hottest globe rankings at the rear of No. 1 Andy Murray and No. two Nadal, has constantly been keenly interested in tennis history, especially the chapters he is creating. Therefore, replacing Andre Agassi as the oldest player ever to complete the calendar year at No. 1 has arrive to have a sneaky kind of appeal.
Lest any one think that Federer is obtaining greedy, he pointed out Sunday that he never ever meant to consider another lengthy hiatus this calendar year. “I was constantly likely to enjoy additional the next element of the period. I wasn’t likely to skip entire swings. … I was constantly likely to enjoy as much as I quite possibly could, so I think I’m likely to keep genuine to that.”
So the ball is in Nadal’s court, and it will be a challenging one to cope with. Federer has continually experienced greater results than Nadal in the summertime U.S. challenging-court activities, specifically the US Open. With No. four Novak Djokovic out for an unspecified period of time and Murray off his A-match and nursing a negative hip, Federer is not just well-positioned to do well right up until the end of the ultimate Grand Slam of 2017, he towers more than the discipline. That’s just wherever he wishes to be, since this is a gentleman who for whom “strain” is much less adversary than aphrodisiac.
Federer concluded his run by the match, in which he did not drop a set, with a 6-3, 6-1, 6-four win more than Marin Cilic. Glyn Kirk/AFP/Getty Photographs
Federer was philosophical about his anticipations, saying that he failed to think also much about the data he proven with his win more than Marin Cilic, not even when it was more than and he was soaking up the ambiance in the course of the trophy presentation. What he was contemplating was how wonderful it was to arrive by and win Wimbledon, wherever he experienced known so much disappointment and doubt considering the fact that he last gained the occasion in 2012.
“It is really been a extended highway,” he described, “It is really been an remarkable highway. It is really been tough at moments, but that is how it truly is supposed to be.”
For Federer, all roadways guide to Centre Courtroom. It is really wherever he feels best and plays best. He promises that at this phase, his results is genuinely the byproduct of his “consistency.” That potential to routinely execute at the greatest level underneath the most challenging situations is only offered to people who have a profound hunger for the highlight.
“I’m not shying away from the massive phase,” Federer said, insisting that from the begin, he is never ever felt he hits the ball as well on secondary courts as on Centre. “That was constantly likely to be a fantastic matter.”
That’s a remarkable attitude, and it goes some way to describing Federer’s results. Still he insists that his adore of that phase was neither created nor drilled into him by dad and mom or mentors, like he was some kind of “challenge.”
“I was not that child,” Federer reiterated. “I was just genuinely a standard man rising up in Basel, hoping to make a occupation on the tennis tour. I guess I dreamed, I believed, and genuinely hoped that I could essentially possibly genuinely do it, you know, to make it serious.”
Federer unquestionably attained that. And now the only term for his achievements and what he is become is “unreal.”

In “Dark Days: The Casting” #1, the storyline kicks off with Duke, the Dark Knight’s new ally-in-training, and Green Lantern attempting to put the late Hawkman’s warning to good use, thus preventing the end of the DC Universe. Andy Kubert, Jim Lee and John Romita Jr. are among the artists enlisted to kick off the story in this prelude issue.

“Art like this demands an epic story,” Snyder has said of the series, which has roots in his and Greg Capullo’s acclaimed “Batman” run. “‘Dark Days’ posits a mystery that traces all the way back to when I started on ‘Batman.’ I’ve hinted at them over the years with Easter eggs and clues. This is a mystery that literally begins at the dawn of man and spans generations of heroes and villains and ultimately leads to huge revelations about the past, present and future of the cosmology of DC. I couldn’t be more excited for ‘Dark Days.’ It’s the prelude to the event we’ve been developing for years.”
And that’s just the start of DC’s big July, as the publisher is poised to continue to develop it’s Rebirth mysteries, while looking ahead to the inevitable clash between the heroes of the DCU and the Watchmen who have been pulling their strings since the New 52 launched in 2011.
The relationship between Bruce Wayne and Alfred Pennyworth, the man Batman thought he could trust more than anyone, is in danger. The “American Vampire” team of Snyder and Rafael Albuquerque conclude their “All Star Batman” run with the revelation of a secret that may leave the classic relationship permanently altered.
Tom King and Mikel Janin’s flashback storyline continues, as “Batman #26 and 27 see new chapters in “The War of Jokes and Riddles.”
Throughout the month, DC is celebrating various ongoing series anniversaries with double-sized issues for every title hitting #25 for the month. “Justice League,” “Hal Jordan & the Green Lantern Corps,” “Nightwing” and more will have 40-page issues to promote their twenty-fifth issues.
In “Deathstoke” #21, Christopher Priest and Digenes Neves have constant Teen Titans nemesis Slade Wilson recruit his own team of young heroes. Kid Flash, Power Girl, Rose, Jericho and Terra are all on Team deathstroke, believing the mercenary has turned a corner towards doing good.
“The Flash” #27 is billed as the issue the series “has been building to” for a full year. Josh Williamson and Howard Porter are promising readers “the ultimate showdown” between Barry Allen and his greatest nemesis, Reverse-Flash.
They’ve been teased for months, and in “Harley Quinn” #24, Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti and John Timms will finally introduce Harleen Quinzel’s parents to the world.
Wally West believes he’s destined to be with Linda Park, as do his fellow Titans teammates who have come to (more of less) remember their pre-Flashpoint lives. So it’s no surprise that Arsenal doesn’t take things well when he learns that Wally and Donna Troy have begun developing a romantic interest in each other.
Shea Fontana and Mirka Andolfo take over “Wonder Woman” from the current creative team, immediately sending Diana on a multi-issue story arc. “Heart of the Amazon” kicks off in “Wonder Woman” #26 and continues in #27, two weeks later.

The past goes futuristic as the Adam West-era Batman meets the teens from the 30th century in “Batman ’66/Legion of Super-Heroes.” Lee and Mike Allred send Batman to the future, while a group of Legionnaires spend a little time with Robin in the ’60s.
The massively muscled Scrappy-Doo finally catches up to Scooby and the gang in “Scooby Apocalypse” #15. The series’ long-burning sub-plot comes to the foreground in Keith Giffen, J./M. DeMatteis and Dale Eaglesham’s Issue #15.

DC Super Hero Girls Writer Boards Wonder Woman Comic
Shea Fontana, known for her work on the “DC Super Hero Girls” comics, will succeed Greg Rucka as the writer of DC Comics’ biweekly “Wonder Woman” series.
She will pen five issues, beginning in July with Issue 26. Rucka announced Wednesday that he’s leaving the title with Issue 25.

“Having worked on ‘DC Super Hero Girls’ for the last few years, I have a great sense of Wondy, a teenage Wonder Woman in a high school setting, and it’s an honor and an adrenaline rush to be writing her now ‘all grown up,'” Fontana said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Many of her core characteristics continue to remain routed in peace, justice and equality, but as an adult she’s seen a lot more war and tragedy, and is dealing with her world from a wiser, more experienced point of view.”
“DC Comics: Bombshells” artist Mirka Andolfo will join Fontana for the first two issues of her run. Fontana said that working with Andolfo is “a delight,” and that she “has an incredible visual storytelling talent to create cinematic superhero action sequences while capturing the complexity of the characters’ emotions [and] maintaining a clear focus on the evolving relationships between characters.”

Rucka explained Wednesday that he’s leaving “Wonder Woman” because he “can’t maintain the pace on the title while also fulfilling my commitments to my other collaborators.” He went on to say that his final issue will “set a table for who is to follow, and provide for them as much room to work and explore and grow. Diana’s future is bright, that’s what I’m saying.”
“Wonder Woman” #26, by Shea Fontana and Mirka Andolfo, will arrive July 12, with Issue 27 following on July 26.
