That time in Libčice near Prague
Mirek, a citizen of the town of Libčice near Prague, woke up to another working day. With hair everywhere itchy like crazy, he sets out to pretend to work at a science research center. He is paid for his journalistic work, but mostly indulges in other hobbies in his office. There are businesses where it doesn't matter and professions that are paid but no one needs them. Mirek is an experienced and happy man.
Mirek: (reading a philosophical book under the table) "Oh, Descartes, how I am delighted by your thoughts, which remind me of my own, of course better, more brilliant!"
Suddenly, his wife, whom Mirek traditionally considers his grandfather, enters the room.
Wife: "Mirek, shouldn't you be working? What if the boss comes and something bad happens? I can't be on the phone all the time and be afraid that it will happen!"
Mirek: (reciting delusions in verse as an answer) "
O my dear, hear my word, The universe burns inside me like a ball of fire. My brain spawns thoughts like wild waves, I dwell in the realm of great dreams, I am a hero from above."
Wife: "Mirka, this doesn't make any sense anymore! Go find another job that's real. I'm afraid you're going to drive me crazy here for good."
Mirek: (while the wife is leaving) "Come on, it is ok, grandpa..."
In a moment, the calm of the office is back, Mirek is getting ready for a siesta, on his way from work, like every day, but at that moment a dark head appears in the window.
Black Farmer: "Well, man, can't you use a better perfume for your madam than your crazy poems? You're lucky I'm here to tell you this! Good advice is damn good."
Mirek heads to the local pub, but not for the alcohol. He absolutely hates it and smoking perhaps even more. Therefore, while surrounded by alcoholics themselves, he orders milk.
Mirek: (approaches the farmer's table) "My friends, milk is my encouragement! A glass of milk for me, please."
American Farmer: (with a touch of Texas accent) Hey, hairy, what are you doing here? Here, alcoholics are told to "curse the day", but you, your hairy body, get a different drink. Milk huh? That's like drinking water from a horse's trough! But go ahead!"
Everyone falls silent and watches Mirko until he finishes his glass in the corner. Such courage and conviction! Only then will the conversation and life of the pub start again.
It is time to return home. And as usual, neighbors meet neighbors in the afternoon, the patriotic revelry is a small-town gift.
Marcel Proust's death mask hovering in the air: "You earth-crawling lunatic, stinking insect! Life is but a memory lost in eternity! Don't you understand?"
Black American farmer: "Well, hello there, folks! I lost my flock of sheep, but did you happen to find them here?"
Team of passionate female tennis players: "Look, here goes the hairy fool again! Those rackets of ours would have crushed him!"
Many dramatic events are decided by the gut, so everyone unexpectedly found themselves in line in front of the Libčice railway station public toilet.
Mirek: "It's on fire! It's on fire! I tried to make tea at home! Our apartment is going to burn down!"
Marcel Proust's mask: "A corpse. Only memories burn, only time burns!"
Team of female tennis players: "What is that hairy kid talking about?"
Black American farmer: "I tell ya, folks, this line is longer than the plains of Texas, I'm going to screw up!"
Mirek: (with enthusiasm) "I'm coughing for firefighting. Folks, I have plans for a book containing all existence in the infinite universe! Everything down to the smallest detail in a small, tiny pamphlet, Wittgenstein can go stab himself with his Tractatus."
The Mask of Marcel Proust: Crazy! You can't prove that!
American Farmer: But you could do it in Texas!
Tennis player 1: Mirek, learn to cook something other than peanut butter! Your wife doesn't want to move anymore!
Mirek: "Woman? What kind of woman? Grandpa can handle the move, he's used to it."
Tennis player 2: What if you'd rather write a book about tennis? We would support that!
Tennis player 3: That would be great! Tennis literature, this is what the world needs!
At a certain point, everyone satisfied their needs, went their separate ways, it was not Proust's turn yet.
Proust's mask: "What a disgusting world, what a wretched life! What is happening to these times?! Where has culture gone?"
Mirek comes to the neighbor's house, where his wife is waiting for him, who takes care of him like a mother, while their own apartment was reduced to ashes.
Mirek: (nervously) "Oh, my dear mother! My grandfather. Don't worry, nothing happened. We're safe here. Our apartment burned down, but I'll clean it up! My back hurts, so later, okay?"
Wife: "Mirek, for God's sake, you're still such a hypochondriac! How do you even do that? At a time like this? Don't forget what I told you! Be careful and don't start another fire!"
Mirek (with a start): "Yes, yes, dear mother. I promise you that I will be careful. Let's pray for our apartment! And I also wrote something to you today at work, my dear mother-grandfather, listen to my new poem: As the hairs wrapped around his back, Like waves in the ocean they rocked, I was a genius, I walked the world, My thinking sound on endlessly."
Wife: "Mirek, stop with those delusions and focus on real life! You are my husband and I cannot be your grandfather, I've had enough!".
Mirek hangs his head guiltily.
Marcel Proust's Death Mask: "What extraordinary folly is this? I have no time for this nonsense! When will we finally get to real art?"
Darkness slowly descended on Libčice near Prague.

Comics this week (11/11/2020)?
Iron Man #3: It’s keeping it up! I keep kinda expecting this to drop off, but it keeps delivering.
Warhammer 40,000: Marneus Calgar #2: Again, coming to this with no background knowledge or investment, but this is some solid comic-booking.
We Only Find Them When They’re Dead #3: Noooowwwww it’s becoming an Al Ewing comic. I liked those first two setup issues, but it’s getting into the thick of it and I’m more than ready. And the way Di Meo and Miotti play with colors and shadows in this one? Drooling.
Penultiman #2: God, if Penultiman isn’t the most agonizingly relatable take on Superman for this generation possible. Between this and The Wrong Earth I’m ready to say that Peyer isn’t ‘merely’ a painfully unheralded talent, but that DC missed the boat in a huge way not elevating him to their bigger titles while they could.
Superman #27: My boy! Sadly spoiled - no anger, but I do remind you all to please wait a few days after release if I haven’t said anything before asking spoilery questions - but my boy’s here! Anyway, really solid issue on every front, really curious how the next issue is going to close out not only this arc but the run as a whole.
The Green Lantern Season Two #9: Hahaha Morrison’s back on their bullshit in the best way, love it. And if there has EVER been a testament to the power of coloring in comics to completely redefine the look of a title, it’s what’s happened here since Sharp and Oliff decided to start getting experimental.
Wonder Woman #766: Maybe it’s Steve Pugh’s art, maybe it’s splitting up Diana and Max, but this issue did work a bit better for me.
Punchline #1: Well, I’m getting Batman, so here you go. It’s a fine enough issue: there are some interesting tacks here between someone trying to parse the thematic intent behind Joker’s crimes from an in-universe bystander’s perspective, and sort of seeing a culture war prop up around these elevated supervillainous circumstances that still has roots in radicalization and the easy absolution that comes with being young, white, and attractive; almost Astro City-esque. Mirka Andolfo’s art really fits, the sort of slick stylized work suited to a story centered around young people while getting scary and hallucinogenic as needed to sell that this is still a Joker-adjacent story. And Bluebird’s back, she’s great! At the end of the day though, there’s still nothing here that’s convinced me that Punchline is a creation of Tynion’s in the same way as Clownhunter or Ghostmaker, so much as a mandate from DC of ‘give us a new Harley Quinn, but without the abuse overtones so she can stay Joker’s evil sidekick, and also hotter’. The Batman’s Grave #8-11: So I’ve known for awhile now that when The Batman’s Grave wrapped and I could be sure DC wouldn’t be making any money off it, I’d get the remainder of it out of the back-issue boxes. I had today off from work, so while I was at my LCS I checked said boxes since I wasn’t seeing some of it on the shelves and couldn’t find them. I thought “oops, guessed I missed them. No great loss anymore given, it’s not like I can’t live without these or that I was ever gonna get his comics again after it, but still annoying. Might as well double-check”, so I asked the guy behind the desk and they did indeed have all those issues, and after making sure with him that they weren’t ordering any reprints of those so my buying them wouldn’t prompt them repurchasing it from DC - and with only one issue left, so further reorders aren’t happening in the future either - and since I’d just been standing there asking after it, I went ahead and grabbed them knowing it would only benefit the store rather than incentivizing giving Ellis further work.
Explanation for why I felt comfortable touching them out of the way: Choices were made here. There’s still some very good stuff, of course there is, it’s still Warren Ellis doing a bigass Batman comic with Bryan Hitch - though more on the scale of Ellis’s James Bond run or work in the Ultimate universe rather than one of his real triumphs, it doesn’t even live up to most of his previous Batman stories - and in a different world I’d probably be calling this the definitive ‘Batman-as-detective’ story of the decade and a deserved perennial in the making. But even momentarily putting aside the real-world circumstances, there are the sort of morally horrifying moments like in Ellis’s infamous Secret Avengers finale *all over the place* in this, and I genuinely can’t tell what’s meant to be horrifying and what’s meant to be badass. Batman tortures a dude but shock reveal he only hurt him so bad he thought he was being tortured, a couple cops execute a cop-killer and depending on how you read the scene Gordon might know and be cool with it, and Bruce declaring his mission in 2020 to be “I work with the police to uphold society’s rule of laws” - it’s I suppose appropriate for his last Big Two comics work that he’s showing his ass in the biggest, most unsettling way possible.
Superman: Man of Tomorrow #19: When buying #18 at the prompting of a few of you (thanks again!) I saw the advertised premise for the next one looked really interesting, so I got it, and folks. This might be my all-time favorite World’s Finest story? Amazing high concept executed perfectly, really joyful character work, basically everything you want to see out of a comic with Superman and Batman in it. It’s $1 and so very much worth your time.

“And what do you actually do there?” – My working week
29.03.17 - In most cases of telling family members, friends etc. about my European Voluntary Service in Czech Republic and especially here in TOTEM, the saying in the headline is the usual reaction. Quite often this question is asked with some undertone of incomprehension of how people dare to go to an eastern European country like this. In the end however many people are curious about my work here and want to get to know more about it. The point is that somehow, especially at the beginning of my EVS, it was really difficult for me to give an all-embracing description of my work here. Probably most of my volunteering colleagues will confirm this, and actually it can be seen as a blessing, because each project is so different in its aims and structure and also the work that volunteers in certain organizations do can differ. So, how does it look in my case?
After getting up on Monday morning I can look forward to a diversified week. Of course during the days there are some hours where I’m looking on the watch more frequently as it is normal when a part of your work is also office and administration. But I think that there is a good mixture between relaxed office work and days where I have to hurry from one activity to the next. So at 8 o’clock on Monday work starts with checking e-mails and filling in the timesheet, which is then already followed by my highlight of the week. “Jamacek”, which is one of the music groups in TOTEM, practices. In October my colleague Mirka invited me to come to a session, and I decided to go, also because I could play the guitar so I had the possibility to contribute something. Since that I am each Monday under really lovely people, and after two hours of work on regional folk songs, the birthdays and namesdays of the group members get celebrated with sandwiches and wine. In the afternoon I recently started to visit a senior house in Doubravka, another part of Pilsen, to have one hour of German conversation together with interested people living there. The first times it was quiet difficult because I really had to focus on speaking clear and loud enough and also the seniors had to find the courage on showing their knowledge in German language. Anyway this is a really nice activity together with kind participants.
On Tuesday morning I return to school desk, which is in my case the couch of my Czech teacher. Together with her I learn vocabulary and grammar and we also try a lot of conversations. With my progress I am already quite happy what of course goes back to my teacher who puts a lot of power into the lessons and with whom I have a lot of fun. The afternoon I spend in office for the careful preparation of what comes on Wednesday and what is the actual main task of EVS volunteers in TOTEM… the language conversation classes in English and German!
After starting the Wednesday with a little help in the baking and cooking club, the conversation classes blast off. Together with 10 up to 15 other participants we discuss for one hour about some topic that I prepared beforehand, for the choice of the subject there is a really wide range which we always try to adjust to the interests of the group members. Having started with the goal of being a teacher, meanwhile I see myself as an equal member of the group because I recognized during the last months that I get really enriched by the others and how much I can learn from them. So we already spent a lot of hours in which the clients told me about their professions, their home and some little anecdotes out of their lives. One hour of English, one hour of German. A big change-over, but it will become even harder on Thursday as we will see. In the evening I visit the exercise of a choir my colleague Mirka invited me to at the beginning of this year. It’s also a really nice activity that in my eyes demonstrates the multigenerational character of TOTEM’s activities, the age range goes from ca. 20 to ca. 60 and each decade is represented.
The Schedule on Thursday keeps ready – to stay in scholastic language – four language studies and one hour of sports. At first I join the French conversation club which is lead by one of my English “students” who is a former professor at university and speaks really good French. Immediately afterwards there are two more conversations in English and in German that I am responsible for, with another, not less interesting groups. Afterwards I am not rarely exhausted, so that it gets time to refresh again, what I can do throughout the next activity: Joga. Many members of the conversation classes that take place before are also part of the Joga course happening afterwards and so there is a good connection to the group. Of course the first times it seemed a bit strange for me to make exercises together with 10 elderly women, but meanwhile I really like the sport and the members also build a conspiratorial group so it is always a pleasure to visit them. The day finally finishes with the last language on the schedule, Czech is awaiting me once again…
Friday finally is a really calm day in comparison to the other days, because there are nearly no activities in the centre and, according to this, also few people in the building. Every second week there is the big team meeting called Porada, where really all the members of the team come together for three hours of discussion and exchange, what is nice for me because it’s not possible to see some of the colleagues at other days of the week. The rest of the time can be spend for some help in the office, brainstorming on the miniproject every European volunteer is advised to organize… Or on this EVS blog which I neglected long time to be honest ;) But it will change… Maybe… Hopefully… Tak, Uvidíme :D
