Half-Calendar year Awards - The Fights | UFC &reg
A great battle is a fantastic storm. Set two fighters with each other and you never know what you’ll get, but when both of those have the intention of creating a statement against each individual other and the types mesh, it turns into one thing far more than just an athletic competitiveness. When that transpires, there’s nothing at all far better in all of athletics. Right here are five of the very best fights from the to start with 50 % of 2017.
1 – Justin Gaethje-Michael Johnson
I’ll be truthful – I was prepared to be upset by July’s Justin Gaethje vs. Michael Johnson bout. With all the buzz encompassing Gaethje’s UFC debut and the load of him getting to reside up to his earlier attempts, there was no way he was heading to supply. But he did. As did Johnson, and when they have been performed staggering each individual other and practically putting an finish to the bout on various situations, it was Gaethje rising victorious through second-round TKO. This is just one of people fights you demonstrate non-battle admirers to change them, and it’s just one of the scarce bouts that I can watch yet again and go by means of the identical emotions the second time, even though I know what the finish outcome is. In a environment that throws the “warrior” time period around far too frivolously in athletics, Gaethje and Johnson gained it.
2 – Tim Elliott-Louis Smolka
The ground is a dangerous position in a combined martial arts battle. Fellas like Tim Elliott and Louis Smolka make it even far more treacherous, and for evidence, go back again to April and Elliott’s 3-round decision earn over Smolka. For 3 rounds, they scrambled and scrambled and scrambled some far more in a battle that was exhausting to watch, but in a good way. This is a further battle to be proven to non-believers, and this group of skeptics is comprised of the kinds who say, “Oh man, the ground battling is tedious.” Not in the fingers of Elliott and Smolka.
3 – David Teymur-Lando Vannata
A last moment transfer to the UFC 209 co-primary function location put lightweight prospective customers David Teymur and Lando Vannata in an attention-grabbing location in March for the reason that no just one knew how they would respond to these pressure. Truly, permit me revise that, for the reason that if any individual knew how to move up in limited location, it was Vannata, who confronted Tony Ferguson on two weeks’ notice in his UFC debut. So how would Teymur respond? Effectively, seemingly really very well, as he gained 30-27 scores across the board en route to the major earn of his profession. But this was no blowout, as both of those fighters went for it for 15 minutes and still left a challenging act for headliners Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson to follow
Connected: Read through – Half-Calendar year Awards – The Knockouts | Read through – Half-Calendar year Awards – The Newcomers
4 – Jessica Andrade-Angela Hill
Like Teymur vs Vannata, February’s strawweight bout involving Jessica Andrade and Angela Hill was a shutout on the judges’ scorecards for Andrade, but I guarantee that if you asked “Bate Estaca” about the 3-round scrap, she’ll admit that she was in a battle. And what a battle it was, as Hill confirmed off her extraordinary system on the feet while Andrade introduced out the design and style that experienced numerous evaluating her to Wanderlei Silva. It was back again and forth all the way, and while Andrade experienced the advantage, Hill was never out of the battle.
5 – Chase Sherman-Rashad Coulter
Chase Sherman is receiving a great deal of notice in the heavyweight division just after back again-to-back again wins, but ahead of that to start with earn over Rashad Coulter, he was in limited location looking at that he was -2 to begin his UFC profession. Then at UFC 211 in May possibly, he will get a brief notice opponent in the kind of Texas knockout artist Coulter. It may have been do or die for “The Vanilla Gorilla” and he fought like it. Luckily for us outside the Octagon, Coulter fought like it far too, and what resulted was what famous professional wrestling broadcaster Jim Ross would call a “slobberknocker” ahead of Sherman finished Coulter in the second round. It may possibly not have been really at periods, but what a battle.

Although successful the PGA Championship would have been sweeter for Oosthuizen, the $784,000 payout for the No. 2 player at Quail Hollow undoubtedly served his bankroll “Increase Up” as properly.

$880,000 guess in Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor combat greatest so significantly on bout
A Las Vegas on line casino on Friday took a guess on Floyd Mayweather that was so significant, the sportsbook computer system system could not manage it.
An nameless bettor at the South Stage Casino put an $880,000 guess on Mayweather to conquer Conor McGregor in a boxing match that is attracting important betting motion in Las Vegas. The bout is scheduled for Aug. 26 at T-Cellular Arena.
The $880,000 guess is considered to be the greatest put on the combat in Las Vegas at this stage. Mayweather was a -550 beloved when the guess arrived in Friday afternoon. If the undefeated Mayweather is able to defeat McGregor, a UFC star who is creating his specialist boxing debut, the bettor would web a $160,000 financial gain.
The guess was 1st claimed by Vegas Stats & Info, which sent out a photograph of the betting slip on social media.

The first ticket showed only a $120,000 financial gain, rather of the appropriate $160,000 that would occur from the wager. The misprint was caused by a rule in South Point’s bookmaking system that does not permit payouts of greater than $1 million, according to sportsbook director Chris Andrews. The overall payout, must Mayweather prevail, would be $1.04 million.
The e book rewrote two different bets for $440,000 just about every to rectify the problem.
“I am glad we acquired it,” Andrews said of the guess in a textual content concept to ESPN.
Other publications are hoping for related-sized bets on Mayweather to assist them even out some of the massive legal responsibility that has developed up on McGregor. William Hill’s Nevada sportsbook, the place 95 % of the bets have been on the underdog, said its legal responsibility on McGregor is previously perfectly around $1 million.

Angels gain momentum for Mike Trout's second playoff appearance - SweetSpot

Angels gain momentum for Mike Trout's second playoff appearance - SweetSpot
It was Edgar Martinez weekend in Seattle as the Mariners retired No. 11, but the Los Angeles Angels did all the celebrating. They completed a four-game sweep with a 4-2 win Sunday, crushing the hopes of the Mariners right as Seattle had gone into the lead for the second wild card. The Angels climbed three games over .500 for the first time since they started the season 6-2 and climbed into prime position in the topsy-turvy wild-card race.
Here’s how the series unfolded, with some guy named Mike Trout playing a big role:
Thursday: The Mariners scored three in the eighth to tie it 3-3, but the Angels scored three of their own in the ninth when Trout cleared the bases with a two-out double off Edwin Diaz.
Friday: The Mariners led 5-1, but the Angels scored four in the seventh when Trout walked to load the bases with two outs, Albert Pujols followed with a two-run single and C.J. Cron and Andrelton Simmons added RBI hits. Trout scored the winning run in the ninth when he walked with one out and scored on Jean Segura‘s error.
Saturday: The Mariners led 3-1 when the Angels scored twice in the seventh and three times in the eighth. Luis Valbuena hit a game-tying two-run homer, and Pujols’ two-run double (Trout walked ahead of him) put the Angels ahead.
Sunday: The Angels scored three in the fifth to break a 1-1 tie. That rally started with … a Mike Trout walk.
Trout had just three hits in the four games, but the fear of pitching to him played a vital part in all the key rallies. He drew six walks, scored four runs and had the big double in the first game. Walks aren’t sexy, but they’re one reason Trout is so valuable: He’s getting on base and scoring runs, even if he isn’t driving them in. He’s hitting .341/.468/.690 with 57 runs and 55 RBIs in 74 games.
A four-game road sweep of the Mariners, a six-game win streak and possession of the second wild-card spot. Will we finally get Mike Trout in October again? Joe Nicholson/USA TODAY Sports
Still, his excellence alone hardly explains how the Angels are here. After all, they’re last in the American League in scoring, with 4.29 runs per game. Their best starter has been JC Ramirez, who is 10-10 with a 4.26 ERA. Their two other regular starters have been Ricky Nolasco and Jesse Chavez, who are a combined 11-22 with ERAs over 5.00 (Chavez is now in the bullpen). The Angels’ projected top two starters, Garrett Richards and Matt Shoemaker, have combined for just 15 starts. The closer has been Bud Norris, who has a 4.60 ERA and has lost the job (Keynan Middleton got the save Sunday, Cam Bedrosian on Friday and Saturday).
Despite those numbers, the Angels are fourth in the American League in runs allowed. Parker Bridwell, a cash purchase from the Baltimore Orioles in April, is now 7-1 with a 2.88 ERA in 11 starts after a win Sunday. Let that sink in: The Orioles didn’t want this guy. The Angels’ bullpen depth has also been key; they even traded David Hernandez to the Diamondbacks at the trade deadline — in part because they were 51-55 on July 31 and 5.5 games back of the Royals and didn’t look like contenders. Now they are.
As for that second wild card, maybe we need to stop writing about it until the final 10 days or so because it seems unlikely that any of these teams is good enough to pull away. It’s really a bunch of mediocrity. Check out the changes in the past week as the Angels passed five teams.
Sunday: Royals, +0.5 (Angels 3 back)
Monday: Rays, Royals tied, +1 (Angels 3 back)
Tuesday: Mariners, Rays, Royals tied, +1.5 (Angels 2 back)
Wednesday: Mariners, +1 (Angels 2 back)
Thursday: Mariners, Rays tied, +0.5 (Angels 1 back)
Friday: Twins, +0.5 (Angels 0.5 back)
Saturday: Angels, +0.5
Sunday: Angels, +0.5
Five teams held the second wild card at some point during the week. The Angels now hold a half-game lead over the Twins. The Mariners, in sole possession Wednesday, are now two games behind. Maybe Trout can carry his team into the wild-card game. That would make all this mediocrity worthwhile. (Of course, I’m still rooting for a five-way tie.)
Another day, another Giancarlo Stanton home run. Straight to the highlight, as Stanton hit his 42nd home run and 21st in 33 games. At that pace, he’d hit 103 over 162 games.
Giancarlo Stanton’s 250th career homer tied him with Gary Sheffield for most home runs in a season in Marlins history. pic.twitter.com/32VPQg4QUj
— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) August 13, 2017
This is more than just a hot streak. Stanton changed his stance about two months ago, going to more of a closed stance (which was already more closed than it had been in previous years). This has helped him turn better on inside pitches. Check out pitches on the inner third of the zone:
The feeling from pitchers had always been that you could attack Stanton inside and prevent him from getting his arms extended. That strategy suddenly isn’t so simple. If the new stance has indeed created a new level of awesomeness, Stanton is back to being maybe the most feared hitter in the game. Here’s Eddie Matz with more on Stanton’s recent surge.
Dallas Keuchel finally delivers for the Astros. The Astros have been terrible of late, going 2-9 in August, when they handed the ball to Keuchel, who had made three starts since his return from the disabled list, all with poor results (14 runs and 23 hits in 12 innings). They have to be feeling a little better after Keuchel allowed one run in 6⅔ innings in a 2-1 win over the Rangers.
The Astros also received a bit of a gift in the eighth inning. Chris Devenski walked the first two batters, and A.J. Hinch brought on Ken Giles for a six-out save. For some reason, the Rangers then handed the Astros an out with a sacrifice bunt — with Joey Gallo on deck, the least likely player in the game to hit a two-run single and just about the likeliest to strike out and not get the runner in from third. Anyway, Gallo did make contact, lining into a 3-6 double play.
Bryce Harper, Nolan Arenado injuries. Obviously, Harper’s injury Saturday prompted calls for MLB to address the issue of bases and how to prevent injuries from players slipping on them or sliding into them. It’s amazing that Harper didn’t rip his knee apart, and while he suffered a significant bone bruise, the Washington Nationals expect him back for the team’s playoff push. Dusty Baker references 10 days to two weeks, though you know the Nationals will be as cautious as possible.
Meanwhile, Arenado left Sunday’s game after being hit on his left hand, but X-rays were negative. He said he hopes to be back after a couple days. Obviously, both players are leading MVP candidates. If Harper — probably the current favorite — misses extended time, that could create a wide-open race among Arenado, Paul Goldschmidt, Corey Seager and Stanton.
Corey Kluber and Chris Sale are good. Kluber fanned nine batters in seven innings in the Indians’ 4-3 win over the Rays, his 14th straight start with eight-plus strikeouts, one short of Randy Johnson’s record of 15 in a row. OK, it’s kind of a made-up record. Why eight strikeouts and not seven or nine or 10? But you get the point: Kluber is in the midst of a dominant stretch of pitching, with a 1.85 ERA since June 1 and 151 strikeouts in 102⅓ innings.
Meanwhile, Sale fanned 12 and allowed one run in seven innings, earning a no-decision as the Red Sox and Yankees went to extra innings. Sale is 14-4 in 24 starts … and could be even better. In three of his no-decisions, he allowed zero runs. In his four losses, he allowed one, two, three and four runs. He has just one cheap victory, when he allowed six runs against the White Sox on May 30 but won (plus two wins in which he allowed four runs). Sale leads the Cy Young race because Kluber missed a month, and you can also argue that Sale leads the MVP race. But that’s another discussion for another column.

Forget about the Little one Bombers: The weekend belonged to the Little one BoSox - Boston Crimson Sox Website

Forget about the Little one Bombers: The weekend belonged to the Little one BoSox - Boston Crimson Sox Website
NEW YORK — Right before he turned the youngest participant in the majors this season, Rafael Devers belted 18 household operates for the Double-A Portland Sea Puppies. By his manager’s depend, 14 arrived with two strikes and 13 ended up strike both to middle area or the opposite way to left.
“That states a great deal about the hitter,” Portland supervisor Carlos Febles reported. “You you should not see quite a few power hitters hitting homers with two strikes. They all do harm early in the depend. The capability to go the other way, not check out to do also much, it really is a thing you you should not anticipate out of a 20-yr-aged child.”
At least to Febles, then, it need to not have been stunning to see Devers drive a two-strike pitch into the left-area bullpen at Yankee Stadium in the prime of the ninth inning Sunday evening. The solo shot — Devers’ fourth homer in 58 massive-league at-bats — got the Boston Crimson Sox even in the finale of a a few-recreation sequence in August that experienced a decidedly October feel.
But to most people else, like quite a few of Devers’ teammates, it was downright jaw-dropping considering the pitcher it occurred in opposition to. Not only is Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman left-handed, but he routinely lights up a radar gun with triple digits. This specific pitch was clocked at 102.8 mph.
“I have seen 100,” Devers reported afterwards, “but hardly ever 103.”
Still the child failed to flinch. Neither did Andrew Benintendi in the prime of the 10th inning. The 2nd-youngest participant in the Crimson Sox’s lineup shipped a bases-loaded solitary in opposition to reliever Tommy Kahnle to drive in the go-forward run in a 3-2 victory that stretched Boston’s guide in the American League East to 5½ video games.

For most of the season, New York has fallen for its Little one Bombers, the assortment of younger talent that has the Yankees in playoff contention a single season sooner than predicted. Aaron Choose, Gary Sanchez, Luis Severino and Clint Frazier have energized a lover base and set the Yankees in place to access the postseason.
But the weekend belonged to the Little one BoSox. Devers, who will never turn 21 right up until late October, notched a pair of hits, like a two-run double, in Saturday’s 10-5 victory prior to coming off the bench Sunday evening and taking Chapman deep. And with half his relatives browsing from Cincinnati to celebrate his grandfather’s 85th birthday, the 23-yr-aged Benintendi homered Friday evening, stroked a pair of a few-run homers Saturday and recorded the recreation-profitable strike Sunday evening.
“It is just yet another sequence,” Benintendi reported, generally taking it all in stride. “I mean, I’m glad I could support the team acquire. I was struggling the past couple of months, weeks, and to support the team acquire, it feels fairly fantastic.”
In truth, the Crimson Sox’s children built it all appear like aged hat. Breeze into town, choose two of a few video games from the 2nd-spot Yankees, probably even catch a Broadway matinee. No massive deal.
Make no slip-up, even though: It truly is a extremely massive deal. When Benintendi is hitting like this out of the No. 3 hole — he’s 16-for-35 with a few doubles, four homers and 12 RBIs in his previous nine video games, like nine RBIs in the a few video games in opposition to the Yankees — the lineup is deeper and additional hazardous. And due to the fact he was identified as up past thirty day period, Devers has presented the offense a jolt, none greater than his swing in opposition to Chapman.
“I just see him, he’s just like any other pitcher,” Devers reported as a result of an interpreter. “Definitely he’s an All-Star, but I just go about each and every at-bat the exact. I felt additional emotion rounding the bases realizing that I experienced tied the recreation.”
But if the Little one BoSox are building it all appear blase, their teammates usually are not. Ace lefty Chris Sale, who struck out 12 batters in seven innings for his 16th double-digit strikeout recreation, was in the trainer’s home when Devers become only the 2nd left-handed batter ever to choose Chapman deep and the first due to the fact Luke Scott on June 26, 2011.
“I actually jumped up when he strike it,” Sale reported. “You won’t be able to support but smile. Converse about a minute in a recreation, for a dude like him, a younger dude, a rookie, it really is large. And that’s why you really like him. That is why he’s in this article, and individuals are the factors we have pretty much occur to anticipate out of him.”
Crimson Sox supervisor John Farrell reported Devers “does not concern the minute” and identified as it “an outstanding swing.” And probably he was so flabbergasted by Devers’ dramatics that it induced him to overlook Rule 8.06(c) that stipulates a supervisor or coach won’t be able to make several mound visits though the exact batter is at the plate. How else to explain Farrell’s failed endeavor to bring in closer Craig Kimbrel in the center of an at-bat in the bottom of the ninth right after pitching coach Carl Willis experienced just visited reliever Addison Reed?
But all was very well that finished very well for Farrell and the Crimson Sox. And many thanks to Devers and Benintendi, it finished with a 10th victory in the previous 11 video games.
“We’ve experienced our problems in opposition to New York so considerably this yr,” Farrell reported. “To acquire a couple in this article right after dropping a rough recreation Friday evening states a great deal about our men, states a great deal about our resolve.”
And the way that it all occurred states that the youngest players among them are steeled for the obstacle of a pennant race.

PGA Championship -- Missed cut doesn't bode well for Phil Mickelson
New Post has been published on https://othersportsnews.com/pga-championship-missed-cut-doesnt-bode-well-for-phil-mickelson/
PGA Championship -- Missed cut doesn't bode well for Phil Mickelson
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One of the many enduring qualities Phil Mickelson has possessed in a quarter century of professional golf is an ability to extricate himself from some of the precarious positions the game offers.
And when he goes through a lull, as all golfers are wont to do, he has an uncanny capacity to snap out of it, finding form in an instant and rattling off a bunch of birdies.
This does not appear to be one of those times.
After missing the cut by a mile at the PGA Championship on Friday, Mickelson understandably looked tired and beaten. He spent most of the past two days flailing away in the rough at Quail Hollow, and shooting 79 on Thursday and 74 on Friday was certainly no fun. For the first time in 22 years, he missed the cut at the PGA.
Phil Mickelson missed the cut at the PGA Championship, so he won’t play on the weekend for the second major in a row. That’s just the third time that has happened in his career. Lefty played his 100th major this week at Quail Hollow. Ross Kinnaird/Getty Images
To put that in perspective, the last time Mickelson missed a cut at the PGA, Steve Elkington beat Colin Montgomerie in 1995 at Riviera when Lefty was 25 and had four PGA Tour titles on his résumé. Tiger Woods was more than a year away from turning pro.
“The difference is I’m not searching,” Mickelson said of past swing troubles. “It’s not like I’m hitting the ball crooked; I’m just hitting it in the wrong spots. Not really controlling my thought process, where I want the ball to go. I’m not real focused out there. I’m having a tough time visualizing the shot. I’m having a tough time controlling my thoughts and not letting it (wander) to what I don’t want to have happen.
“On the range, I’m having some of the best sessions, swinging the club fine, striking it pretty good, and yet I’m not controlling my thought process out there.”
Mickelson turned 47 in June, and for the past seven years he has managed to put any questions about age to rest. He’s competed at a high level, winning The Open in 2013 and engaging Henrik Stenson (who ultimately won) in an exciting duel at The Open last year at Royal Troon.
The 100-Major Club Player Total Majors 1. Jack Nicklaus 164 2. Gary Player 150 3. Tom Watson 145 4. Arnold Palmer 142 5. Raymond Floyd 127 6. Sam Snead 119 7. Ben Crenshaw 118 8. Gene Sarazen 112 T-9. Tom Kite 109 T-9. Mark O’Meara 109 11. Bernhard Langer 104 T-12. Ernie Els 100 T-12. Nick Faldo 100 T-12. Phil Mickelson 100
Mickelson had a chance to win the PGA in 2014 and Pebble Beach in 2016, and he hadn’t missed a cut all year until The Open last month.
But when Mickelson starts talking about a lack of focus at a major championship — the very tournaments where it should be at its highest — it makes you wonder. He hit just six fairways on Thursday and needed 31 putts in each of the rounds. His proximity to the hole for approach shots was beyond 50 feet.
Is age becoming a factor? Despite advances in technology and fitness, 40-somethings are not prolific winners. Just six players 40 and older have won during the past two seasons, and Stenson is the only one to capture a major.
Is desire waning? It would certainly make sense. Mickelson is in the Hall of Fame. He has five majors and 42 PGA Tour titles. He’s won more than $83 million in official prize money on the PGA Tour alone. What’s left to prove? He’s not apt to grind out a top-20 finish in some random tournament.
Is the split with longtime caddie Jim “Bones” Mackay having an impact? Since they parted ways, Mickelson has played four times and missed two cuts with his brother, Tim, as caddie. Predictably, Mickelson wasn’t going to suggest that had anything to do with it. “I don’t really know how that would affect the shots I’ve been hitting,” Mickelson said.
Prior to last season, Mickelson also parted ways with swing instructor Butch Harmon and began working with Andrew Getson. The golfer saw numerous positive strides; the “searching” aspect he alluded to was no longer an issue. Mickelson qualified for the U.S. Ryder Cup team on points, went 2-1-1 at Hazeltine, and made nine birdies in a halved singles match with Sergio Garcia.
Mickelson has played in every Presidents Cup, which began in 1994. He has played on every U.S. Ryder Cup team from 1995 forward. That’s 22 straight years of team competition, and this year he’s 17th in Presidents Cup points, with two more starts to make an impression.
Can he be a pick coming off two poor performances in major championships?
“We had a talk about it in Akron (at the WGC-Bridgestone last week),” said Steve Stricker, the U.S. Presidents Cup captain. “He told me he wants to be on this team more than anything. I would love to see him on the team.
Phil Mickelson is well below the projected cut at the PGA Championship, meaning he’ll miss his second cut at a major championship this season for a second straight year.

“But just like anybody else, I have got to see who is playing well at the time. I know he’s struggling a bit right now, but I told him I’d like to see him play well from here on out to show me something.”
Then Stricker paused.
“That doesn’t sound right coming from a guy like me talking to Phil,” Stricker said. “Hey, show me something. That’s basically what I said. That doesn’t sound right. I know how important he is on the team. How good he is with the young guys and in the locker room and that kind of stuff.”
If Mickelson shows any form whatsoever, you can bet he’ll get picked, given his impact behind the scenes in the U.S. Ryder Cup/Presidents Cup effort.
Perhaps that will be his motivation, because Mickelson appeared not to have much at Quail Hollow, where he had never missed the cut in 14 appearances at the PGA Tour stop and had eight top-10s.
Interesting, because on the eve of what was his 100th major start, Mickelson was asked about his longevity.
“I really enjoy the challenge of trying to win again, and going through a lull and not having my best stuff and then trying to get it back,” Mickelson said. “I’ve actually had a lot of fun this last year and a half, two years, working with Andrew Getson, trying to get back on top. It’s been a fun challenge.
“I think if you enjoy the challenge and enjoy the process, you enjoy putting in the work and you enjoy putting in the time, I think you end up doing it.”
Those are some words Mickelson might need to revisit.

“Sparring companions who ended up [staying] in the household with him ended up fearful about him. They ended up ringing us, fearful about him stumbling out of the car or truck, incoherent.
“I do not know what occurred. At the conclusion of the working day, we acquired in and traded blows, so I respect him for coming in. It didn’t go effectively for him. I do not know why he sprinted out of there. His moi was dented.”
UFC president Dana White shed gentle on the “knockdown” Friday, when he posted a quick clip to social media of the exchange that led to Malignaggi’s fall. In the online video, McGregor seems to land a left hand shortly in advance of Malignaggi goes down.

“I necessarily mean, even tonight’s highlights showed what I [had] by now stated, as a full he acquired his ass beat that session, but by no means will they release [all 36 minutes].”
McGregor, 29, stated it was “unhappy the way it finished,” but that it in all probability was not going to conclusion any other way. The UFC winner desired Malignaggi to “answer” for some of his earlier responses, with regards to McGregor’s trim odds of achievements in a boxing ring.
