GAAAAHHH OKAY

Let's talk about the Timephoon Episodes

This is such an old topic of discourse but after reading many fanfics, videos, and some posts on the subject I have found little divergent takes on the whole subject.

While commentators are of the mind that, for the most part, the punishment and execution of said punishment for Louie's actions were partially if not fully justified but how she went about it was wrong.

Some fanfic writers and some subsects of the fandom but they are much more critical and often in a more black and white interpretation. Which is valid for vent art. However, I find both these portrayals to be lacking in some nuance.

Specifically when it it comes to who's to blame for the next 3 episodes, and to me, its more than just Della (and Louie but there really isn't much discourse here).

Let's start with Timephoon:

This pretty much solidifies their relationship throughout the episode[Also sorry for no captions]. Multiple times Della is shown to have a very laissez faire style of parenting as she primarily wants her kids to enjoy being kids and having fun. This is probably in part to her personality in general - which is probably what Beakley assumes here - however it is also her want to be loved by her children and even more critically, she doesn't ever want them to suffer like she did. Above all else, she wants them to be happy and feel confident in themselves. We see this in all the previous episode with her and her kids - From Dewey and reassuring him that he doesn't need to prove himself to her [notably in this episode she only shows concern when Dewey himself is in danger, she doesn't give a shit when he almost kills her] to Huey and helping him to have the most fun he possibly can, to even Webby and making sure that she also feels confident in herself regardless in how she goes about things.

Bringing up all these adventures does raise some pretty damning hypocrisy. Della encourage Dewey's reckless behavior in his episode. The lesson at the end wasn't, okay maybe we shouldn't be going on dangerous adventures, it was its okay to be afraid and you don't need to prove to me that you're great I already know you are. Huey's message was similar, albeit more low stakes. Webby's lesson wasn't even that she shouldn't be trying to take such risks to find adventure in the future, it was just a lesson in not being disappointed when things don't work the way you want.

So why wasn't Louie's adventure treated the same? Well... let's look at some more examples of Beakley V Della this episode before we answer that -

This is right before the kids find Bubba, Beakley's reaction is what most people would consider to be parental as she is concerned for the safety of the kids running out in a hurricane. Again we see Della acting casual.

Once Bubba is inside and Huey geeks out about him, Beakley actually smiles bc she knows that something like this means a lot to Huey [keep this in mind for l8r]. She only gets serious after Della says it's neat without much after thought so she gives the lesson of the episode - "Small problems become big problems later if not prevented early."

Next we have Della's faux attempt at being strict with her kids. Letting the irresponsible thing happen as long as they are "safe". While also harkening back to her previous episodes where she also is shown to have this attitude that "the kids can do anything as long as they are safe with ME or Scrooge or another SAFE adult", it is also good to note SCROOGE'S expression here to her patting herself on the back for her parenting. Now he could just be confused as to why Della is taking this "lesson" as a win, but he could be noticing that she really doesn't know what she is doing but unlike Beakley doesn't make any attempts to correct this.

Another scene that people often forget when reviewing this episode, just like with all her other kids she at first takes LOUIE'S side and decides they should just roll with the punches like always. Which honestly is sort if valid because that's kinda Scrooge's whole MO; though he also had others to there to keep him afloat but we all know someone like Scrooge, Della, and the kids hardly see that. I also want to hammer home that, just like with the other boys, she doesn't shy away from displaying that she loves them ALL. A few seconds later, it's subtle but she is shown smiling and patting Louie on the head because like the other kids she just wants him to feel supported. If I was to be critical, I would say this is possibly because she likes the IDEA of her boys more than them but I mean - this is pretty much everyone's attitude towards kids. It might be amplified bc of her trauma but it's not unusual. But even still I would argue that she mainly does love the boys for who they are as she is excited to get to know them.

After Della figures that they are looking for a "master thief", Scrooge and Beakley immediately know it's one of the kids. Shocking her since she later states she is of the belief that her kids are too "good" to do something like this. I also want to bring attention, again, to Beakley smiling (ik im putting a lot of stock into expressions but animation tends to do stuff like this for a reason). She is smiling at whom she expects is Dewey for messing with time and space. Bc even if she planned to scold him, she knows it's just their normal. Scrooge seems to also be of the same mind. Later Beakley gives a really good line about "Even good kids can do dumb things. We got to make sure those dumb things don't turn into bad things like destroying all of existence!".

Mrs. B exists stage right

All jokes aside, this must have been a nightmare for all of them but especially Della. She had just finally admitted that she was out of her depth and made another mistake in parenting. But now it seems like she lost her chance to rectify that. Because for all she knows, Mrs. B will never come back. This is import-ALLRIGHTWEGETIT

Della is then shown explicitly worried about her family. Emotions, insecurities and fear obviously getting the best of her. We don't know exactly what she is thinking but we know she is terrified of the possibility of losing one of her kids. When she asks about Louie, she probably thinks he must have disappeared without her knowing. That she might have already failed more than she could know, because she wasn't there to protect him. She doesn't know - she is "Della Duck" and she doesn't know how to fix this. She didn't expect everything to go so horribly wrong, but that's her theme isn't it?

She is both relieved and understandably PISSED when finding that Louie was responsible for almost destroying the fabric of reality (let me say this again, nearly destroying the fabric of reality). She goes scold both herself and her son about the danger he put them in. Later we see Della, the last one leave and seeing almost everyone she loves vanish. We don't know how long each of the characters who left were in the past but we can assume it was long enough to have to change clothes. Yeah this was probably more of a visual gag but like, the other past characters didn't change their outfits when they came to the present so - (also Launchpad was specific about knowing how the world ends so he had to be there enough for him to understand it). Side note someones gotta write fanfic of these characters time misadventures. I wonder if Dewey and Webby ran into Agent 22.

[Last picture of the infamous scene, side note did anyone notice Launchpad NODDING his head when Della mentioned his time schemes could've cost them their future? He's the only one who knows what happened so maybe Louie's misadventure has more impact than we think-]

Anyways, yeah we know what was said here. But I think it's important to see the reaction the other adults (sorry LP, and Gryo i GUESS) have here BC this is basically why I made this post. What Della decided to do was unquestionably the wrong decision, at least her way of going about it and I will not absolve her of her many MANY mistakes. However, let's remember she wasn't alone in any of this. She was with other parental figures who KNOW more about her kids than she does.

After Louie leaves, why did they think it was good to encourage this course of action? Why did they think giving full parental control to a PTSD, trauma survivor who barely got back less than a month ago was a good idea? Sure it's one thing to not want to overstep your boundaries but are you telling me they wouldn't want to guide her in the right direction at least? We KNOW both Beakley AND Scrooge have their grievences towards Della's parenting strategy or lack there of. Beakley so far doing the most to try and put her in the right direction (which speaks volumes to the problems Scrooge has).

So why wouldn't they explain that, hey, maybe taking away the one thing your kid thinks he is good at ISNT a great idea? Why didn't either say anything about their two day vacation? Something that came up presumingly on a whim and might of prevented (although i doubt it) Louie from trying to steal w/ time? He might have considered pushing back time schemes at least 3 days later. While Mrs. Beakley might be less aware of Louie's insecurities and ambitions, Scrooge definitely isn't. He should have talked to her, and hey we don't see what happens before they leave so maybe MAYBE they did. But again, I doubt it. Seeing as how they all agreed with her at the end, I don't see them trying to meddle with her.

But they should've. They are both experienced guardians and they have nothing to say to her? Plus Donald (goddamn it i almost finished a post w/o him) have THEM responsibility to take care of the kids NOT Della. So they are obligated to help her. Really, the other option other than just well negligence would be not thinking this punishment was a big deal. I wish this aspect was also scrutinized just as much as Della and Louies role in this arc.

Beakley and Scrooge (more so Scrooge) are just as much to blame in what happens as Della if not MORE since they know of her situation in only a way that an experience adult can. There is no excuse for their negligence.

hnnnggg okay i have a lot of opinions on this matter so sorry everyone its DISCOURSE time. Understand these are my OPINIONS and i am by no means the end-all-be-all on the matter. But since you asked!

I don’t believe I said they have more development than Katherine, what I said was that because they are undeveloped, we (the obnoxious newsies fans) can kind of develop them ourselves, and it’s very easy to make headcanons for them because there’s so little evidence of their personalities (when compared to the featured roles!! the actors def all bring a different personality to their characters, im talking comparatively. u cant develop much if u have 1 line lmao) so like, we can kind of, like, its dumb but its like. theres one for everyone? and u can be a geek abt whichever random one is ur fave and make any kind of headcanon u want basically bc there’s nothing saying it ISNT canon. like, they arent developed, but they dont need to be.

Katherine. Deserved better. Being a featured role, she SHOULD have had more development. Her only character trait is that she is stubborn. It’s also the only thing her and Jack have in common. I do not hate Katherine’s character, I’m saying the writers made her extremely two-dimensional, in my opinion. Like. Okay so, at first she couldnt stand Jack. Then, what, all of a sudden she just.. Does ? Like and I know they were going for like, he wins her over eventually kinda thing, but I don’t think it was executed very well. And what is her motivation behind everything she does?

When you compare her to, say, Jack, the other lead. Jack wants to be safe and he wants that for the other boys as well. If you boil down all his motivations, that’s the most bare-bones way to put it. He starts the strike because at that new price, the newsies would not be safe. He wants to drop the strike when their safety is on the line and it would be safer for them to submit. He is WRACKED with guilt when Crutchie gets taken to the refuge, because he is in an unsafe environment where he can’t protect him and it KILLS him. Santa Fe is a fantasy place in his head where he is far away from NYC and in a Safe Place. He agrees to do the childrens crusade when he realizes it is the safest option. You see what I mean? It’s easy to see his motivations and why he does what he does, and the driving force and reasoning behind each and every one of his choices.

Maybe I’m just an idiot but ? I never got that with Katherine? Like, why does she want to be a reporter? What does she get out of it? What changes for her, as a character, when her feelings for Jack shift from negative to positive to very positive? And I’m wracking my brain trying to think of other choices she makes that I can analyze and there just aren’t a lot. Because they didn’t develop her!! The closest she comes is the children’s crusade, and even that seems (to me) to be more of a plot device than a character choice. Like, what are her motives?? Like, I could just not be seeing it because I haven’t analyzed her as deeply as I maybe could have ? But I just don’t get it. Maybe it’s like, an identity thing? Like, she doesn’t want to be just, Pulitzer’s daughter, she wants to be Katherine, and seeks that out herself. Okay, let’s say that’s it. To me, it still doesn’t seem like a strong enough driving force to justify her actions overall and it seems like she just does whatever is most convenient for the plot to move along, more so than as an individual character.

The relationship between her and Jack is COMPLETELY plot-convenient. It isn’t about their compatibility even a little bit. Jack is kind of shown to be a guy who flirts with just about any cute girl he comes across, not that I have much to show for that because again, there’s no fucking female characters in the show lmao. (But there is something to be said about the way he approached her in Carrying the Banner- like he had done just that to dozens of girls. Anyway.) But like, the only reason they have their relationship is to fulfill the obligatory male/female star-crossed lovers bullshit that every contemporary musical feels the need to have. They don’t have anything in common and their personalities would not last together long-term at all.

Hhhhh this got long but tl;dr, Katherine IS more developed than the background newsies which have an average of 2 lines each, but only marginally so. Which, being the lead compared to an ensemble member, it’s ! Sad that the difference is negligible. And I don’t think it’s misogynistic of the fandom to dislike her or the way her character was written. Like, if I dislike Katherine (I don’t but if someone did), it seems misogynistic. Like the post I reblogged seemed to come from that kind of place like, if you dont like katherine youre a misogynist >:( and I just don’t think thats fair because...her character isnt very well written, and there just being literally 2 featured female roles, i dont think how u feel abt katherine reflects how u feel abt women.

Pirates AU--Scene--Protective Steve

(I love this scene and couldnt resist sharing with you guys!)

“This isnt fair!” Tony was yelling almost as soon as Steve had closed the cabin door behind them. “I wasnt doing anything wrong! I was just gathering the rope like you told me to and--”

“I didnt say it was your fault!” Steve snapped. “So you need to stop shouting at me and--”

“If it wasnt my fault then why am I being punished!” Tony insisted. “Why are you making me stay in the cabin again? This is ridicu--”

“Enough!” Steve put his hand up to stop him. “Enough, Tony. You dont have to understand why I run my ship the way I do, but you do have to listen. Or did you already forget what happened last time you defied me in front of the crew?”

Tony flushed, a hand over his rear as he looked away. The spanking had been humiliating, even if Steve had made up for it later, and he didnt want a repeat.

“I dont understand why Im being punished, and he isnt.” he finally said quietly. “You know I wasnt flirting with him. He was the one who wouldnt keep his hands off me, but Im the one that now has to be locked away? Thats not fair.”

“Trust me.” Steve’s voice dropped dangerously. “Bucky is handling his punishment. Every man on this ship knows that you are my husband, and that he would even think about grabbing at you and--” blue eyes closed in anger, the muscle in his jaw jumping as he clenched his teeth.

“You aren’t being punished, Tony. This is for your own safety.”

“I shouldn’t have to be locked away because men cant control themselves.” Tonys chin lifted stubbornly. “Its not my fault that he’s a pig.”

“Its not your fault.” Steve agreed. “But if I hadnt come along, there isnt a whole lot you could have done to keep him from taking what he wanted from you, is there? The cabin is the safest place for you.”

“Teach me to figh!” Tony blurted. “Teach me to defend myself. You cant keep me locked away just because I might get hurt or because someone else cant control themselves. Teach me to use a sword and then you wont have to worry!”

“Ill always worry.” Steve admitted, and his eyes softened in a way that had Tony blushing again. “Tony, Im always going to worry about you. But you’re right. Ill teach you to fight. You shouldn’t be punished because someone else has boundary issues.”

His gaze dropped to the hand shaped bruise on Tonys wrist. “Did he hurt you?”

“Just pulled a little hard is all.” Tony muttered, pulling his shirt sleeve down to hide the marks. “Its fine. Don’t be angry at me, alright?”

“Im not angry with you.” Steve held out his hand hesitantly, palm up, for Tony to take. “I just-- it scared me a little. A lot. You looked so upset when he grabbed you, I just couldn’t help--”

Tony took his hand, let himself be pulled close until he was fit right up against Steve’s body, head tucked in his shoulder, feeling those big hands running up and down his back lightly.

“I would have killed him, Tony.” Steve’s voice was muffled in Tonys hair, his eyes closed as he reveled in this-- this trust that had grown between him, the way Tonys fingers tightened in his shirt to hold him, the shaky little breath from perfect lips that reminded Steve that Tony was just as nervous about this thing between them as he was. Nervous and thrilled and--

“I would have killed him.” he said again, rougher this time. “For putting his hands on you. Thrown his ass overboard and let the sharks tear him apart. You’re so beautiful, Tony. So beautiful and I know every man on this ship wants you but the thought of you with any of them--”

The door opened then, and Bucky stepped inside, smiling a little when they didnt break apart. If anything, Tony burrowed closer to Steve, who swallowed back a sigh and kissed his hair before looking up at Bucky.

“Everything alright?”

“I took care of him.” Bucky said calmly, wiping blood from his busted knuckles. “Threw him in lock down for a night. Everythings fine.”

“Thank you.”

“I think we should teach--” Bucky inclined his head towards Tony. “--to handle a sword hm? We cant keep him locked way just because he might get hurt. Not his fault he’s beautiful and everyone wants him, ya know?”

“Yeah, we already talked about it.” Steve jerked his head over so Bucky would come close enough to kiss but the first mate shook his head, with a meaningful glance towards Tony.

“Ill let you guys be.” Later. he mouthed and Steve nodded reluctantly. It was making him crazy to have to choose between spending time with Tony or spending time with Bucky.

He wanted... he wanted both of them. Wanted to be able to kiss Bucky when he was holding Tony, or be able to kiss Tony when Bucky was lying there with them in bed and-- well, he didnt know how to broach the topic with either of them.

So for now, he watched Bucky leave and held Tony just a little closer until the pretty brunette looked up at him with an uncertain expression.

“Whats wrong?” he whispered, ready to let go and jump apart if Tony was uncomfortable. It hadnt been all that long that they had been doing... this... together, and Tony was still just so innocent and--

“Every man on the ship wants me?” Tony whispered and Steve nodded, confused about why he was bringing it up again.

“Every man?” Tony emphasized, and his eyes darted to the door where Bucky had disappeared, and then back up to meet Steve’s gaze, lit with something-- something.

Oh. Realization, and curiosity and elation all warred within Steve and he tried to keep his expression neutral.

“Every man, Tony. And the only one I wouldn’t rip in half for touching you is Bucky.” he ran his thumb over the solid line of Tonys jaw, sweeping up to touch hair that had grown longer and curlier with weeks at sea. “Only Bucky, you understand?”

“Bucky hurt him, didnt he? For touching me?” Tony asked instead of answering and Steve nodded again.

“I think-- I think I understand.” Tony curled close again. “Will you stay here with me for a few minutes? I know you’re busy and the ship and crew need--”

“Ill stay.” Steve interrupted. “Of course Ill stay with you. Sometimes I cant believe I ever wanted to leave you in the first place.”

IM GAGGING! 6-1? Someone used an extra vote to make sure Thomas wasn’t home? Or he had a vote against him? Idk, idrc I survived the first vote of this game and sis it was stressful but easy. Thomas came on like half an hour before tribal and voted for Bradley without talking to anyone, I’m shook. A trio formed between myself, Borris and Zest whilst Borris and I were also invited for a foursome with Bradley by Brianna. I’m shaking tbh

So the challenge has been posted and it's cute!! I like this challenge because it allows me to think critically and analytically!! I am currently putting in WORK in the challenge but my tribe is flopping lmaoo. I'm trying my best to give them tips and tell them to mimic the common things I'm finding and apply it to their own pairings but something isnt clicking!! Hopefully we can pull out a win!

Can my tribe... do the challenge?? I refuse to go to tribal again but I also don't feel like carrying my tribe in the challenge by doing each one of the pairings extensively.

I’m glad I was able to sit out of the immunity challenge this week. However I am still feeling our tribe of 6 is actually 4 because I don’t see much interaction from Suzy or Charlie.

At this point I am preparing for tribal council. Jay announced the scores for the challenge and our tribe was down by 30+ points and in last place. An actual alliance (our alliance name) decided to vote David off if we go to tribal again because of his problematic behavior and mean comment to GiGi that he totally didn't say lmaoo. The challenge is basically up I'm ready to forfeit and go right to tribal.

So Suzy and Charlie do not seem to be contributing at all. This is fine I guess since it just puts a bigger target on their backs as a result. I am just tired of these useless tribe members. Maybe it'd be better to go to tribal in order to vote them off so that they cannot turn on fellow Tuai members later since they wouldn't have that strong of a connection with us.

Flint just complimented me on my good work in the challenges. It seems that my challenge performance is being noticed. While this ensures that I will be safe in the majority of pre-merge, it will just paint a target on my back during the merge. Plus, I know I will be no good in these individual immunity challenges so let's see how this goes

I’m feeling pretty comfortable in the game, which makes me nervous something will happen. Our tribe is doing great in challenges and I have a strong alliance, I’m worried about an impending tribe swap!

David Penn

I am worried i will get voted off if we lost, i've only added like two things because i'm too busy rn.

Welp. Late update but the Thomas vote went smooth. Also we won the third challenge so woo!!! Nothing really that new going on. There’s an alliance chat for me, Boris, Apollo and Bradley as well now so that’s...cool. That just leaves zest out for the next vote which I’m not too upset about since she doesn’t talk to me a lot.

I'm scared I haven't been participating as much as the others and therefore might be out next. I need to start forming alliances ASAP

I feel really bad. I did some of the plots for the spreadsheet but everyone else did more. I was busy with hosting family over for brothers bday i didnt really have time. Im glad we won immunity tho. It probably saved my ass.

I think I may just have formed a secure alliance, we'll see though

This vote seems too easy, everyone except for David knows David is going home, not that I’m complaining one bit

Right. Well. You’re rude, you didn’t help in this challenge and I feel like you may have thrown your part in the last challenge even though you were very adamant that if people were not doing well in challenges they were a target. I do not in a million years feel like I can trust you. And I’m pretty sure it was you who wrote that horrible voting confessional for Gigi. Which was horrible and completely unnecessary by the way. It sounded like a bully. And I hate bullies. Bye, I’d say I’d miss you... but I won’t."

"Now that we are down one tribe member, it is essential to win this next challenge. Though this does mean that if we were to go to tribal council, Charlie would be the one to leave. We still have that safety blanket, but I am just nervous about what happens after Charlie is voted out. We need to do everything in our power to prevent that situation from happening.

I should have seen the One World twist coming since Jay seems to like it. Either way, the Tuai Quad Alliance LLC has decided that I should be one of the representatives out of the two. This will definitely make me seem like the leader of the tribe now. I just have to watch my back and see what happens. If they are going to perceive me like that, I might was well become it. Let's see how this all pans out."

Well, David better thank the Survivor Gods because we were for sure gonna vote him out. But alas someone quit, I hope they are ok and all is well. <3 Not looking forward to this one world twist -_-

I am trying to establish ties with a fair amount of people while we are in the One World. For one, I want to become friends with both Raul and Kathleen. They said they wanted to work with me earlier so hopefully they plan to keep that promise. I also want to see how much I can trust Bradley. I did give him the advantage so maybe I have an ally there. I've also talked to Lysandre a bit and think he's alright. Let's hope I can establish myself socially in this game!

Today is my birthday and I am so grateful for all of the sweet birthday wishes from everyone.

I must say that people are coming to me like bees to pollen. They all want to talk to me which makes the most sense since they all want to be social. Though some are better at it than others. I've been getting really good vibes from Lysandre, Kathleen, Apollo, and Marie. In that order. They just seem like good people. Also, Marie is 13!? Shook! I did gather some intel though from these people. Apparently, on Mea, David is at the bottom for being a rude-ass and being abrasive. That means if I am on a tribe with David, he will definitely be a target which might help later down the line. Marie is also very upfront and blunt. She asked me immediately "Who is on the bottom of your tribe?" Like girl. Be subtle. I'm not giving info out that easily so I just said no one even though it is clearly Charlie. Everyone on Mea though has mentioned this "bitch" who's on the bottom for being rude. It's David. I'm just so shook that they all are giving out this information that easily. It didn't take long for Marie to start spilling everything to me. She could be valuable as a rat later down the line so long as I don't tell her too much. Though she has said that her tribe really likes me for some reason. I am definitely rising as a leader for the game and will have a target on my back. Though it's great to finally have social ties that could carry me to merge.

Apollo mentioned working together. As in, if we ever worked together then that should be our alliance name (Club 96). Interesting proposal right there lol

This one world twist was cute until I came to the conclusion that I was playing the game with someone I had blocked and deleted and never wanted to play with ever again. I can see right through his alias and I literally want to will my idol off and quit. And I was really liking his alias until I started seeing connections and speech pattern.. yeah this is really ugly.

"It seems my socializing has paid off! Firstly, I was chosen as leader for one of the new tribes. I got to choose people for my new tribe that I would be making. It’s a fair point, it would maybe be more appealing for her to be more like Enid’s age for example but i do have my reasons. It’s definately on purpose I’ll try to explain as many as i can . I’ll probably be going into the backstory that influences, but wont directly be adressed in the fic. So no spoilers really. @damnitdaryl can confirm that when i plan out a multi chaptered fic i really go into far too much detail.

Number one.

Grace was 13 when things turned to shit. On a bus full of people with her older sister Cass who is 19 at the time. While younger characters like Coral and Enid make it to this point in the story alive, they both had something that Grace and Cass did not. Parents. They provided our young lovers with protection, safety and sheilded them from a lot of initial responsibility allowing the transition from snot nosed kid to badass survivalist to be a lot easier. Not that it was easy. Just easier.

Number two.

Continuing the comparison Coral met the apocalyptic world in his home town. He and Lori (and Shane lets not forget) fled their little corner of the world, one that they were familliar with and they knew Atlanta well enough to navigate to and from multiple times through their story. Grace and Cass were in an unfamiliar city so to begin with the odds were stacked against them. I felt like it was important for Grace to be somewhat older to give them a better fighting chance. Cass was 19 so while she would do her best, having a little sister who was older would be easier for her to look after, giving them both a better chance at survival. Doing what their dad had said, getting out of the city, was actually a vital part of their survival in the early days so without knowing it, Negan did save their lives at least once.

Number three.

It was important for Negan that she was older too. It was important to me that he had missed her growing up. Argue with me if you like, i personally feel like in your teen years you begin to grow more as a person. You develop world views and question structures and schools of thought - a lot like what Enid and Carl do now and then on the show. Grace is a young woman now, while older men and her dad in particular see her as a girl, shes pretty badass. It provides negan with a challenge because she isnt some child who is going to fall into line, she will have her own thoughts and opinions about the things that have happened and are happening which may end up providing conflict. Seeing as this story is just about his daughter being found, i doubt it’ll ever dive into this part but Grace’s character is complex and like i mentioned i really get into this stuff.

Number four.

The amount of shit that i put Grace through before we got to this part of the story is really tragic. I’m a terrible person. But i wouldn’t feel comfortable putting her through it if she had been any younger. This is simply my personal preference and is basically me as the writer telling you “because i said so.” Shes delt with the scum of the earth and lost her sister along the way. If you really want to know consider the claimers from season 4 mixed in with the bandits that turned gareth and his terminus buddies into canabilistic physchos. Yeah. Life has not been kind but she has also achieved a lot. She is a badass lady who spent almost 7 years of her life trying to get home and she made it. She walked through her own front door the thought of which was sometimes the only thing keeping her going. I feel like her age reflects the character development that she has gone through.

So that’s my main reasoning. Hopefully that makes sense outside of my own mind, feel free to ask things if you want. :)

Where can I get one?

Your local friendly music shop, on line or through specialist harp suppliers (see below). eBay isn’t recommended in this instance as you just don’t know what you’re gonna get or where it’s been!

Music shops are the obvious first choice, however in my experience very few know much about harmonicas. OK you can actually see the harp you want, but what happens if it’s out of tune (with regular pitch or with itself), has a duff reed or just isn’t fit for purpose. Believe me it happens. If you pay up front and try the harp out before you leave the store (no room for being bashful here), will they exchange it if the harp is out of whack? Or will they tell you either you’re not playing it right, you’ve just broken it, or you need to send it back to the manufacturer… Or best still – at a music store in Brighton specialising in guitars – ‘harps don’t go out of tune.’ REALITY CHECK!

Before buying any harmonica, check out the retailer’s ‘returns’ policy. Standard procedure in a music store used to be: pay for the instrument upfront, play it before you leave the premises and exchange any faulty goods on site. If the harp you’re buying is audibly out of tune or sub-spec, does not octave free of any tremolo effect, is not airtight, does not bend correctly or rattles when played – it should be exchanged for another unit. Retailers used to be happy with this.

Nowadays they can get funny. I spoke to Consumer Direct (South East), but they just rattled off the usual consumer advice: The Sales of Goods Act (1979) states that items purchased ‘must be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose.’ In the UK, failure of the retailer to fulfill these terms is a breach of contract. They then went on to say items you’ve had for less than a month can be refunded. Items you’ve had for more than a month can be repaired or replaced. Thanks Consumer Direct. Try that with a harmonica. You might just as well be honest and tell me unless I present you with a real case, you have no interest in my dilemma. It gets worse if you travel over the pond…

Heads up if buying inside the USA. They’ll tell you that ‘State Law says’ you can’t blow a harmonica and then return it – on health and safety grounds. You must return any defect merchandise to the manufacturer…at your own cost. Hello. Contract with the retailer? They go deaf on you and start serving another punter. Believe me I’ve tried this in New York and San Francisco. No way will they let you blow that thing to check if it’s fit for purpose… And harps are half the UK price over there… Anyway I’ve flagged it up. If you have any feedback pleased get back to me.

So how do you obviate the apparent ignorance shared by high street retailers or the risk of purchasing a dodgy instrument you need to place between your lips? The short answer is work with people who understand your needs.

Of all the on-line distributors, I recommend Harmonicas Direct. They provide an informed, friendly, fast and personal service. I spoke to Peter at HD about all of the above and I can assure you he is on our side! Scroll to the foot of HD home page and select Technical. The returns policy is very clear and more than fair.

For that little bit of personal extra, I totally recommend West Weston’s customised harps. For £35 plus postage you receive an original spec Marine Band which West will check and calibrate before he sends it out. Any problems and he’s only a call away. His harps have the juiciest sound and you don’t have to pump ’em hard. Great for tongue blocking.

Choosing a harp

There are so many types of harmonica on offer it can be bewildering at first. Without a doubt you need to start with a standard 10 hole diatonic (commonly called a blues style harmonica or short harp). THis is what the majority of players use for blues, rock, country, folk and celtic. The bulk of non-chromatic reference material is built round this type of harp. It’s going to take time to learn any harp at first, so at this stage the brand is not too important. They’ll all present you with the same obstacles as a beginner. Later on you can try different makes and models and begin to establish your favourites. Ultimately it’s down to personal taste. One man’s tin sandwich is another man’s gob iron. Most retailers will stock Lee Oskars or Hohners. These are fine.

Wooden bodied, plastic or alloy?

I play both. Arguably wooden bodies give a warmer tone. Occasionally they need a little breaking in from new. Then again alloy combs ring out. Plastic and alloy are more durable and won’t swell if they get damp. Currently I favour Hohner Marine Bands (wooden body) from West Weston and Hohner Big Rivers (plastic body) from the high street. I’ve used Herring before (plastic) – they were lovely and rich. I also had an alloy valved Suzuki once which sang out beautifully.

Which brand is best?

The main brands are Hohner, Seydel Söhne, Lee Oskar, Herring, Bushman, Huang, Tombo and Suzuki. The oldest and largest of these was the Hohner company until Seydel Söhne was resurrected.

Hohner produce a whole range of diatonic harps, which you wil find in most music stores or through mail order. Their wooden bodied varieties include the famous Marine Band. There is also the Blues Harp. Plastic bodied harps include the Special 20, Pro Harp, Cross Harp and Big River Harp. Hohner recently shifted their manufacturing plant from Germany to China, and quality has suffered somewhat. However they still offer a good full tone and reliability. The Marine Band can be prone to air seepage between the body and the cover plates making the harp harder to play, but go to West Weston and he’ll sort this out for you.

Another common brand of harp is the Lee Oskar made by Tombo in Japan who also produce good diatonics like the Folk/Blues and the Ultimo. Lee Oskars are really popular because they are airtight and ready to play. Their tone is not as full as a Hohner, but they are great performance instruments. You can venture into all types of tuning too and replace reed plates cheaply and easily.

The other makes of harp are perhaps less common although the Huang Silvertone Deluxe and Star Performer are widely available at the lower price end of the market. Don’t be put off by the low price tag; they are in fact very good value for money and make excellent practise harps. I would recommend these for anyone on a budget.

Which key should I start with?

Diatonic harmonicas are tuned to the key stamped on the cover plate or on the end of the comb. This is straight harp or 1st Position. It means if you buy a Harp in the key of C major you’ll be playing in the key of C major. With time and practice you will be able to switch to 2nd position (also known as cross harp or blues harp). C harps played in 2nd position will open up the key of G for you. Then there’s 3rd position – D minor and… Don’t panic. It will soon become clear. You’re just learning a new language!

Which to key start with? Definitely a C. It’s mid-range and most tutorial books use a C harp. Once you into blow bending, you’ll need something a bit lower like and A or Bb. You’ll certainly need A and D if you want to play along with guitarists. Then there’s F at the high end of things…unless you want to try Low F, Low A. But let’s not muddy the waters too much. But a C harp, buy a tutorial book, phone a friend, ask the audience, then come to me for a lesson.

Yes! Anything from Dave Barrett‘s range of books. Sign up for his free bi-monthly newsletter on-line too at HarmonicaMasterclass.com. Also Blues Harp from Scratch by Mick Kinsella is an exellent module for beginners – one or two typos in the tab, but the structure is superb and gets you off into very good habits from the start. Then again you have endless material on-line at You Tube – Jason Ricci and Adam Gussow have been amongst the most prolific and well-regarded contributors. If you have time or can’t sleep, pour yourself a pint, grab a harp and prepare to be dazzled! But beware – they can become addictive! (The lessons on line and the pints that is). And finally Steve Baker. Anything instructional by Steve is worth every penny. His Blues Harmonica Playalongs Vol. 1 is a seminal work – Double Crossed and Blue has to be one of the all time perfect examples of 3rd position harpooning.
