For fannfic writer asks:
Do you ever read your own writing for fun?
If you could erase any three tropes from existence, what would they be?
Hello! And thank you for the questions :)
Do you ever read your own writing for fun?
YES. Absolutely 100% yes! I write for myself and my own enjoyment first and foremost; I know what I like and how I like it, so it only makes sense that I enjoy reading my works, haha! It's a lot of fun!
If you could erase any three tropes from existence, what would they be?
This is a hard one to answer, because I'm a strong believer in the fact that there's no capital sins in writing -- as long as the writer knows what they're doing, anything and everything can become the foundation for a wonderful, poignant story.
That being said... there are some common tropes (particularly in romances) I'm not too fond of. Love triangles are one of those (they mostly seem childish to me, honestly), and I also don't really enjoy love at first sight (attraction yes, interest yes, but love? at first sight? definitely not my thing!). Contrary to popular taste, I'm not a big fan of enemies-to-lovers, unless there's an extensive 'friends' phase in between. So yeah, if I had to pick: love triangles, love at first sight, enemies-to-lovers. :)
Thanks again for the questions, these were a lot of fun to answer!

ok i admit i dont really go for urban fantasy and the combat/fighting scenes in it were rough and i thought some of the plot was dumb but the first book in the tarot sequence got me??? like a solid 3.5/5 which given my innate distaste for UF is p damn high. it's about the RELATIONSHIPS. the rune-brand brother bond and how they understand each other and love each other and fight and cuss each other out and care so deeply and apologize and work around each other's trauma and triggers. addam's priority always being his brother. THE TERRIBLE DELIGHTFUL TEENS MAX AND QUINN. whatever the fuck is going on with ciaran i adore him. the 20+ yr recovery arc. the magic system with the sigils and courts based on the major arcana. the INSANE amount of plot bombs dropped in the book 1 epilogue. everyone is so traumatized and yet they get up and they try. ive only had max for a day and a half etc etc etc
like. it is dark and heavy and holy holy shit content warnings abound i would not actually /recommend/ it to most ppl because of that, but it's not grimdark. terrible unspeakable things happen and keep happening and yet there is tentative hope of ending the cycle or at least saving a few kids and building a home and there's love and accidental child acquisition and idk ik ive been real tired lately and it's no masterpiece. but it hit in some kind of way i wasnt expecting it to

man i have really been thinking about worldbuilding and exposition in books recently
when i was like, i don’t know, twelve-ish, I picked up this book about a teenage girl in a spy school. and i absolutely fell in love with it - I thought it was incredibly neat how the book just seemed to drop me into the middle of the story, even starting in the girl’s second year. in fact, the main character frequently referenced events from her first year (falling in love with a civilian, things ending badly, finding secret passageways, losing her mother’s trust etc.)
and I actually really enjoyed the fact that the character had a rich and vibrant life outside of what i had read and that the book didn’t go out of its way to explain her past in flashbacks or anything. i understood the main takeaways and why she was reacting to things based on what i gleaned, and more than that i understood the growth of the character, why she was cautious in certain places but reckless in others, etc and i felt smarter for not being handed the answer on a silver platter
anyway it wasn’t until i finished the book and realized there was a sequel that i looked it up and found out that. in fact. i had started with the second book in the series.
oops.

i should find people to promote breadavota to because who else will ship the funny little jpegs together. should i appeal to the para and transid communities cuz i just realized that the story having "living" as a legal and social status instead of a strictly biological one and chronicles the different ways characters who identify as one or the other approach "transitioning" is very transid fitting. and paras because at least three of the characters canonically are paras and they aren't evil people for it (they're evil for unrelated reasons /lh)
ft the cast that hits all of the "rly stigmatized identifications" bingo (going to put only canon here, none of my hc's)
bread the mc a doll who tries to transition from non-living to living, she's a collective of 46 "breadlings" and can modify her body based on their own internal body parts. she hates the laws
jacques, loveless schizospec/pd haver objectophile/teratophile dollkin (?) who also identifies as being literally dead. he hates the laws
has some kind of dyadic/commited but non romantic relationship with:
media, a zoophile/erotophonophile who is also like transliving and most of his arc seems to be his internalized shame for all of these because it goes against his reputation as his species's most "ethical" role model which is a title he probably got after usurping god and eating her eye. he wrote the laws. also he hates the laws
reception who considers themself a single person but routinely presents as three people at once (which the rest of their species finds weird). they hate the laws
bon/scarecrow, a demon force-transitioned into becoming "living" before getting exiled when they fail at assimilating into society and curse the nation's records of their years being forced into an entertainment industry. they hate the laws
bien. who loves his dad bon. in all senses of the word (hes my favorite blorbo). okay hes too repressed to hate anything
idk how to describe sar i just need everyone to look at sar at all times. sar makes one's own laws
special mention for vara a snarky ai who is programmed is to split fictives of people she hates apparently /lh
she hates the laws
also just look at the art :3 so pretty
the story truly has it all. blood and gore. toxic doomed yaoi. discussions of disability. speculation on sociocultural constructs of love. being "living" used as an analogy for being an entity worthy of love and being part of society. more toxic doomed yaoi. read breadcomics today

what brand of stupid are you ?
Himbo stupid. You're just an all around kind person who's a little too gullible. You are knowledgeable on weirdly specific trivia but a lot of common knowledge seems to have slipped you. You probably aren't the best at math but by god can you fix a flat tire. Everyone remembers you as a friendly person, you just might need to brush up on your reading comprehension again

i never realized you were getting those rude comments I'm so sorry, ao3 has a newer feature that makes you able to block certain accounts from commenting, so if you're getting multiple comments from the same person you can block them
awwww I promise I’m just being sensitive & over dramatic because they really aren’t that bad! Im sure people get much worse & I truly get so many positive compliments I shouldn’t dwell on the handful I have gotten that I deem to be rude.
I did learn about that new feature on ao3!! It’s pretty cool they let you do that!
Thanks anon <3

i guess now i am considering analysis part of the art i am putting out.. this is just a thought. and i havent written my essay yet. anyway. i am thinking about fucking ed carter again. get me out of here.
tearing through flesh day after day after day battle after battle succeeding over and over where you could not before. constantly reliving the moment you could have changed things for the better.but. but. but heres the crucial part. the very event that made you a killing machine is the one where you could not have possibly have been that. the event where you needed to be that. forming this response endlessly too late. fated to lose your friends no matter what you fucking did. molded by your enviornment in the cruelest of ways and not even able to use it when it mattered most. you were never enough. you will never be enough. FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

from ash . me &. the bestie ! ✌️ :P ( < - - - guy who irritates the crap out of ash )
* kind of conditional for the spoiling one , bc soaking up tobias’ resources &. funds is hilarious sometimes , but too much &. ash’ll start rejecting it . especially if nothing is asked in return . 🙄
* betrayal is also conditional because ash works on a “ don’t betray me / give me a reason to betray you &. i won’t ” basis . so it depends on tobias really . betrayal from ash’s side would be unlikely almost impossible if tobias was able to achieve ash’s loyalty in the first place , but that’s a matter of if , so ! depends !
Are you Tobias' type?
❛ Hm? ❜ While the amount of checked boxes and the feat of achieving (multiple) bingos fall short of a surprise given the person who's completed them - for had they truly been that different from one another, Tobias would never have taken this longstanding of an interest in Ash -, his eyes immediately dart to what appears to be a small, typically unobtrusive note at the bottom of the card. Without it there, perhaps he would have found it more compelling to contemplate the meaning behind having been willingly handed something of this sort, but as things stand, Tobias' gaze falls on the minuscule comment and after a single, reticent blink, the nonchalance in his expression cracks and the corners of his mouth begin to twitch. ❛ Pfft--- ❜ It isn't long until he caves and laughs, and a finger must soon reach to wipe the tears that threaten to form in his eyes.
It takes a prolonged moment for the laughter to subside (through rather monumental efforts on his part) yet even after it fades, the glint of amusement in Tobias' gaze remains steadfast, unwavering. ❛ You should go ahead and check the 'similar sense of humor ' box too. I'd say the difference isn't quite as big as you think it is. ❜ One last soft chuckle, the previous laughter's final bastion, and the mafioso decides to swiftly gloss over Ash's answers. The majority of the important ones are checked, with the sole exception of being trusted, and dare he say another one has also positively caught him off-guard, but instead of letting it show, a mischievous grin steers the conversation towards the harmless, unchecked ones. Travel and adventure. Does Ash dislike them because of past experiences, a distaste for new experiences, or because he's the one he'd have to be stuck with for the entire experience? ❛ Are you sure you don't want to give some of these others a go, though? If you combine everything you've left unchecked, you might just give Dino a heart attack. ❜

one of the interesting little nuances of r/v especially the first hundred or so episodes is like. he’s not really her employer! he has certainly has some authority over her, to order her around and to manage her relationship with David/David’s education, but Liz is her actual boss and Vicki never lets him forget that. he doesn’t have the authority to get rid of her ( try though he might! through multiple means! ) or to punish her, and Elizabeth’s word is final on any orders, even those relating to David. Rog has about as much actual authority over V as Carolyn does, which I think drives him absolutely insane.

Hot take? Unpopular take?? Imma try to get somewhere with this point but like. I really think reading fanfiction inherently increased my standards for literature.
Cause for a while now I've only solely read fics in the past few years, like probably finished like two published books a year maybe (even though if I count my fic reads I'd easily be in the 100s from word count alone) and like. Recently got into the YA side of booktok, tried reading several of the most popular ones cause i kinda miss published books, and I just. side eye that shit?? Best example is ACOTAR. Read like 4 books in that series. Kinda get why it's popular cause the overall the main plot points (hot romance and kinda Mary sue protag) are good enough to get you into it but like. I genuinely had to force myself to finish it?? I have no idea why this is so popular.
Cause literally when I hold the ACOTAR up to my top 20 fics. Nothing. Not even my top 50 fics. Cause first off the plot is good enough but it's not something I've never seen before either. Same with characters. The writing style?? Straight up nope. Like. Is this really the standards for a good story?? There's so many good authors that write excellent smut and plot and characterization and just FANTASTIC writing style and overall quality of work and just. I don't get it.
I'm assuming this is a me thing, because I tried going through several YA novels and just. The quality of writing reeeally leaves a lot to be desired. The best thing I can come up with for the reason behind me feeling like this about YA is that the last time I was reading insanely, I was a teen, and now I'm in my early 20s so there's a good possibility that the same things don't intrest me anymore. But I keep circling back to the level of writing cause like. Idk. Just. I feel like while the plot and characters for a lot of these novels are good, what falls short is how it's written??? Like wtf.
