(this might be leaning too self indulgently far into the dom/sub/praise/ownership style of things BUT)
i can imagine Jacob starting to train Pratt to do what he wants by making his rations depend on it, not just in the - you passed the trials here’s dinner, way - but really breaking it down into a Pratt Point System. where finishing kills under 10 seconds gets a warm meal, hesitation = deductions from his ration, weapon replacement and reload speed are tracked for a final calculation of how good he gets to eat and drink; then they’re sitting across from one another, Jacob checking off points and grading Staci’s behavior, calculating and chastising or praising the deputy’s performance, until it’s completely ingrained in him to do exactly as Jacob pleases. Jacob seems to like a bloodier kill? He’s slashing their carotids. Jacob wants him to point B in 5 seconds? He’ll just have to sprint into the next body. Staci even makes a habit of looking into the cameras as he does it (as long as it won’t add any more time to his trial). Anything for Jacob.

me, cupping rolin jones face so gently in my hands: do you understand? do you understand how vital Daniel was in terms of character growth for Armand? this was the first human he loved in centuries. and Daniel loved him back! All of him, even the evil parts! he taught him how to be part of the modern era. how to mingle amongst humanity. do you get it? do you?

getting so angry thinking about how many people i know who desperately and rightfully want and yearn for romantic love and deserve to be loved like that and how this world we live in has made those kind of connections near impossible, how much the apps have taken away our sense of human connection, how you used to meet people in bars or at restaurants and now you have to swipe and hope that the person you match with is the slightest bit normal and it really just makes me cry if i think about it too much, what this world has become

Now I'd like to preface this with the fact that this is NOT my best work by any means
It is sorely bullshitted 😔 bc I hate my film history class
And it might not make much sense without seeing the film
But here you go:
Throughout his films, Wong Kar-Wai had utilized cinematography and mise-en-scene many times to portray the narrative. This can be seen especially in the film Fallen Angels, a film that deals with the more dangerous and dark side of love. In this film, the stylistic elements used by Wong Kar-Wai help convey the themes of unrequited love and attachment, as well as reality versus imagination while conveying the dark mood. It conveys different types of love as well, both familial and romantic. The stylistic elements used in this film are his continued use of a fisheye lens throughout the film, the way the shot seems to be “always moving”, as well as the mise-en-scene when it comes to lighting and set design. These elements help to portray the unrequited love of the characters Ho Chi-mo and Wong Chi-ming’s partner. It also enhances the rise and fall of the character Ho Chi-Mo.
In Fallen Angels, the mood plays a big role in conveying the themes of unrequited love and attachment, as well as reality versus imagination. This is because the mood is portrayed as very dark, and has a forbidden feel to it. It gives the audience a feeling of tension as they watch, knowing that something will go wrong eventually. But at the same time, the mood never gives the audience false hope, as from the beginning of the film, it is known that it will not be all happy endings. This is seen through the use of camera work and mise-en-scene. The sets in Fallen Angels are very meticulously decorated to portray the state the characters are in. The camerawork highlights how the set works into the character’s surroundings, creating the prominent mood. For example, the setting of Wong Chi-Ming’s home. His partner is constantly cleaning his house, while also going through his things because she is in love with him. The camera work is very tight the first time we see this setting, as Ho Chi-mo– his partner, is in her own imaginary world. The audience does not know exactly what she is imagining at this point in time, but they do get the feeling that it has her closed off from the world– or reality for that matter. The lighting during this scene is also very hazy and bright, but at the same time dark. The lighting is lit from many different sources; the clock on the wall that is emitting a green glow, the orange light that is coming from outside the frosted windows, the dim fluorescent lights, and lastly the light from the television. All these light sources give off that hazy feel, making it feel as if the audience is watching a dream. Which is exactly what the character is experiencing at the moment. Ho Chi-mo is in love with her partner, Wo Chi-Ming, and has made up an image of him in her head. They have never met, but she had feelings for him regardless, and created a fake dream of who she thinks he is in her head, obsessing over him. She pretends that he loves her the same way she does him, but in reality none of that is real. It is all just something from her imagination. In addition, the camera work and setting help to reveal more about Wo Chi-Ming herself. It reveals how alone she is, and why she got so absorbed in this fake world of hers.
The mood of the film is also seen in the fact that the camera never seems to be completely still. A lot of the shots used during what would otherwise be considered static shots are handheld, therefore leading them to not be completely static. This gives the film a feeling of motion, showing how the character’s lives are constantly moving forward, no matter what. It also can help portray how when a character is stuck in their own mind, despite the world moving on when they’re not. This movement is really important during the scene where Ho Chi-Mo is packing things up after the death of his father. The camera is handheld during these scenes, so they always have that small bit of movement to them. Despite being held as still as possible, there will always be the slight movements, due to it not being done by a machine, and it showcases what is happening in that scene perfectly. Ho Chi-Mo is clearly affected by his father’s death, because his father was his backbone, the one person he had to support him. But now that is gone. He no longer has his anchor, and his slowly going to come undone as he once was. The small jolts in the camera due to it being handheld shows how despite his life feeling like it’s come to a stop due to the death of his father, he still has to move on, even if he isn’t emotionally ready. He is now unstable, just like the camera movement.
Wong Kar-Wai uses lighting, camerawork, and mise-en-scene expertly in Fallen Angels. Through these stylistic techniques, he was able to convey how love can affect people in bad ways; Also showing how even if they would like things to stay as they are, it can’t work like that. These techniques helped to really convey the mood to the audience, and see the smaller nuances of the effects of this kind of love. The kind that is not so readily talked about, since it causes people to be obsessive and can hurt people.
