shout-out to @karlmarxverstappen's maxiel playlist, which I had on repeat.
my take on maxiel based off said playlist which you can yell at Bella for;
"You know... I'm not 18 anymore." Max hiccuped, at his attempt of fluttering eyelashes before leaning onto Daniel's arm and giggling. Subtle come on.
Daniel nurses his own drink, lightheaded enough to find Max still endearing instead of annoying. Not enough to fall for it though.
"Yeah? You still drink like one, though." Daniel chides him, tone light. You'd think Max, now ripe old age of 24, would know how to hold his liquor better; what with winning World Championship parties and all. Max is warm, and pink flushed, and all for the taking; but Daniel knows better. He's seen Max following around Charles with puppy dog eyes, scrambling for reasons to talk to talk to him. He knows what Max Verstappen with a crush looks like. He invented Max Verstappen with a crush. Charles is, of course, too focused on a championship he's still got a shot at to really notice. Daniel remembers when that was him, all young and determined with the self confidence he will win a WDC.
Max should know by now Daniel hates coming second to him.
But still, Daniel was the one who accepted the invite -- the Redbull cognac is better than whatever beer McLaren has because Lando also drinks like an eighteen year old. Max is drinking to enjoy it, P2 seems like the lowest he can score these days, and Daniel's drinking to forget; each race blurring from forgettable to bad, struggling for points. Sometimes he's tempted to text Christian, like really? Now you guys come out with a rocketship?
He tries not to regret it, but when he's struggling for points in a shit box and there's Max on the front row; it's hard not to. Max is tracing the tattoos on his arm, from the Cupid to the lettering of the 'LOVE' and Daniel knows from experience to just let him do whatever he wants, he'll tire himself out soon enough. His skin pinpricks where Max touches it still, with a gentleness Daniel knows full well he's capable of having. Clad in Redbull from head to toe, intently staring at Daniel's arm like it's the first time he's seeing it; like he doesn't have it memorised; how could Max feel like anything but home?
Daniel's first tattoo on his thigh was about leaving home. The whatever European track they're on right now is far, far away from Australia.
"We were something, right? Don't you think so?" Max asked quieter, none of the previous flirtatiousness; blunt and wavering. His hand stills on Daniel's arm then moves away altogether, as if he wanted to hold on to it but stopped himself.
Daniel's unsure how to respond. He can't think of a joke, can't think of anything that wouldn't be bitter and accusatory on the past tense of it all. He doesn't want to be that guy, holding on to it all; the good and the bad. Max is no longer that kid who both needed to make him laugh and one up him at all times, who'd follow him anymore and go pink when Daniel would lean in to whisper in his ear. Max gets to stop running; all that ambition striving for the title he wears proudly; he can stand a little bit bigger, a little more confident now -- it suits him.
"We were sweet." Daniel confirms after a long silence, surprising himself. Even between them, he would rather shrivel up and disappear than show an ounce of vulnerability and how much they had been integral to each other, how Max shaped Daniel just as Daniel shaped him. Maybe Max isn't the only one who matured over the years.
Daniel looks at Max, who has his eyes closed and half nodding off.
"C'mon, party boy, let's return you before Redbull sends out a search party." Daniel teases, nudging Max lightly.
"Mm, fuck off. 'M not a kid." Max tries swatting at Daniel, still with his eyes closed, and misses.
Yeah. We'll never be those kids again.
When Daniel leaves, finishing his drink and a sleepy Max Verstappen in the booth, he beckons a Redbull clad employee pointing at their star boy. Then, he treks his way back to the McLaren motorhomes.

I'm slowly dipping my toe into writing for the brainworm black hole vortex that is brothercedes, and I was following your blog cause of the tag but I double checked your ao3 and omg, yours is one of the first fics that truly sent an arrow down my spine wrt characterization and style (so for me, the Brocedes blog and the fic author being the same person is a happy surprise!) i have to respect one and done-ing the perfect fic and then dipping out. although I do hope you write more for them (if you would like to!)
Hi there!!! Brocedes is SUCH a brainworm black hole vortex. I’m glad you enjoyed my fic. I’ve been trying to write f1 stuff for a while now and it was the first fic I was satisfied enough with to post. You may notice that the infidelity tag is one of my favorites, so it was very fitting.
I totally intend to write more f1 fic, but for some reason it’s super challenging. I have a couple of drafts on the go right now, but none brocedes unfortunately. I have some ideas surrounding Lewis begrudgingly reconnecting with a divorced/redeemed/miserable Nico, but nothing written.

kind of crazy that lewis said that nico always lost to him in their younger days, but losing to nico once costed lewis his 8th title, essentially. like, you can win everything, but if you don’t one time, all of it won’t matter in the end.
in contrast, nico choosing to tolerate placing 2nd to lewis in the last 4 races of his career, so he can win the one time, the only time.
they are so compelling
to quote nico himself, when you come for the king you best not miss. and he didn't 🫨

Lewis was one of the biggest propagator of the "Nico is a coward for retiring/took the easy way out I'M gonna be racing until I'm 40 and back hurts 👺" which he's kept true to his word
i don't think lewis, who is the GOAT of his sport and even now is going after that 8th, could understand why someone would simply opt out. cause he doesn't operate like that at all. and to him at that time losing the title to nico was bc he had more mechanical failure and nico retiring instead of battling it out again added deeper insult to injury.
and well. sometimes lewis is shady esp with regards to nico 🤷♀️
