hello, Fanfic recs for wof fans?
I'mma be real with there are only like three fics I can recommend in good faith. There ain't a lot here folks. If anything I need recs too.
But, here's some ones.
Healed by Sandshadow9 follows the story of Flame and Umber as they are both sent to a rehabilitation center to recover from their traumas. It is THE Flame/Umber fic. "What a weird ship" you might say. Trust me when I say you're pretty much converted by the end of it.
Broken Fragments by Donovan94 is a rewrite of the second arc. It takes a major derailment from the original series. I haven't finished reading it all, but it's pretty cool.
And,,,that's about it off the top of my head lol.

So this is gonna be in dot points mostly, but I may end up writing a bit of fic depending on where this goes (because I just have a vague idea, I have no clue how this is going to end up lol)
Notes from during/ after writing:
Me jumping between tenses and POVs: Parkour!
WHY DID I WRITE THAT I’M NOT EVEN BRITISH KHAJSD (Must be watching too much Mumbo) (what I’m talking about will become clear upon reading)
✨Metaphors✨
Paraphrasing said metaphors from a very good WoF fic called Broken Fragments
Writing in maths class and an example question mentioned dogs, we should get these kids therapy dogs
Had to pause to actually do work, I just remembered Dandy so ignore that lol
I need to find a better way to start dot points than “she” three times in a row
Done now, shorter than the last one technically but no fic so it’s more content.
Enjoy Xorny taking Gem back to the nether instead of finishing the ritual, angst incoming >;3
~
- Xornoth knew it was a losing battle as soon as the rulers showed up. After years of not being in any proper combat situation, let alone one where their opponents had magic, there was no way they could win. They also knew that they wouldn’t be able to retreat unimpeded... unless
- Their eyes landed on Gem, still on the corruption with blood flowing out of her hand towards the dragon egg. Quick as a flash they pointed their arm and corruption burst out of the ground, wrapping around her and dragging her over to them.
- Using her as a shield made most of the rulers lower their weapons (and the ones who didn’t at first got a harsh glare from Pearl until they did) and they escaped through a nether portal, having spikes of corruption destroy it on both ends.
- They knocked Gem out so she’d stop struggling and started making their way back to the nether fortress.
~
- Gem woke up with a pounding head and tried to lift her hand to it but found herself restrained. She looked around and saw her arms and legs bound, with corruption snaking up and wrapping around her again and again. She was so caught up in thinking about the curious pattern she almost didn’t hear the footsteps approaching. Almost.
- Xornoth comes in and offers her a deal. If she accepts the corruption, forswears the overworld and the false god, they won’t punish her. (A lie, but they’re lazy and don’t want to put in the effort of breaking through the protection.)
- She tries to be confident, but a lifetime of conditioning doesn’t break in a few months and all she can do is shake her head the smallest amount.
- Xornoth sighs like it’s all a great inconvenience and flicks a single hand.
- And the corruption on her burns.
~
- Back in the overworld, everyone except Fwhip is panicking. They managed to save the dragon egg, sure, but Gem is gone and Xornoth is still very much un-crystaled.
- Fwhip though? He’s chuffed to bits. Sure, he may have been captured and sure, the ritual didn’t work, but Gem’s finally going to be saved. The only way it could be better is if they were all back in the nether, but he reassures Sausage that he’ll be saved soon.
- There are many discussions about what to do, and Pearl is the strongest advocate of storming the nether, but the others shoot that down pretty quick. Without Sausage or Fwhip they don’t know where in the nether Xornoth is hiding, and they’re not going to risk bringing either of them there.
- No one can do anything, so they wait.
~
- Despite the constant torture, Gem still doesn’t give in. Xornoth tries everything, pain, nightmares and hallucinations, leaving her in a sensory deprivation room, and while all that’s good for keeping her quiet, subdued, and obedient aside from when it comes to the corruption, it’s not achieving their goal. Until they realise something.
- You see Xornoth’s methods are akin to a bull ramming into a wall over again and again. They’re trying to bowl over her defences but chipping away at the wall is taking too long. Instead they need to become a wasp, small and able to slip into any cracks to sting where it hurts.
- When she’s asleep and her mind is at her weakest they use what little power they have over it to... tweak a few memories.
- Small things, a scoff or mocking laugh from Pearl here and there, Katherine’s pity turning condescending, a thousand tiny changes that all add up.
- Gem finds herself wondering why she’s been fighting so hard. Sure, Xornoth and Exor are bad, but the people of the overworld weren’t exactly perfect either.
- She still tries to defy them, but her doubts are overwhelming and eventually Xornoth offers something that changes her mind.
- They say that anyone she convinces to abandon the imposter god and accept Exor will be spared.
- Gem gives in.
~
- Pearl is shocked when Gem shows up at her door out of nowhere, covered in new scars and marks, the most concerning of which being the almost methodically placed burn scars wrapped around her arms and legs.
- She tries to reach out for a hug but Gem steps back, just out of reach.
- She starts the whole “leave the false god, join Exor, be spared” speech and Pearl looks at her in confusion and worry.
- Pearl tries to ask what’s going on, but Gem just repeats herself with more and more desperation.
- Eventually though, she realises that Pearl isn’t going to accept so she turns away, flying off without a glance back.
- That night Gilded Helianthia goes up in flames. Not all of the citizens manage to make it out and the crops are all destroyed. There’s no doubts about who did it.
- In his cell, Fwhip grins.
~
So yeah, once again I may do more for this (very likely I will because angst beloved <3) but thoughts, ideas, comments always welcome ofc
-Your favourite fox (who’s actually going to get a sona ref tonight because I actually have time tonight)
Oh, this is awesome!
The way Xornoth operates is very much on brand. And I can almost feel Sausage having a mental breakdown throughout this, trying not to run away to the Nether in despair (or maybe desperately making excuses to stay?)
Looks like I’m just going to be speechless all day. I wish I could say more, though.
