Cam Smith Wins The Open
Tumblr media
Cam Smith wins The Open, the 150th Anniversary Open at St Andrew’s Old Course. If you ever needed proof that a brilliant short game will beat the best long game exponent here it is. Cameron Smith over Rory McIlroy at the biggest major golfing event of the year illustrated this golfing truth. Cameron Young eagled the 72nd hole to pile pressure upon the young Aussie but to no avail. The pink-shirted Queenslander calmly rolled in yet another birdie to clinch it. What a putting display on the world’s biggest golfing stage, with 8 birdies and a 64 to come from 4 strokes back to claim a major championship.

British Open 150 Won By Cameron Smith
Sitting up in front of the box until 3.30am in the morning, here in Australia, was never more worth it. Watching the mullet sporting Smith was a real privilege to behold. The on-course crowds may have been rooting for Rory but Cameron Smith played the golf of his life to claim victory in the Open Championship. 20 under par on the Old Couse at St Andrews was his winning score and he made 5 birdies on the trot. Smith’s performance in making par at the 17th hole was crucial to his one shot victory. Golfer of The Year is Cameron Smith Cameron Smith’s 2022 season record should be recognised as the best in the game. His major Open win, plus his Players Championship, and Tournament of Champions victory must have him vying with Scottie Scheffler for the PGA golfer of the year award. It was a wonderful tournament at St Andrews with huge crowds and glorious golfing weather. The Old Course never looked better and played superbly. Some curmudgeons may have wished for more bad weather – wind and rain to mar the execution of shots. However, it came down to the flat stick, as it always does in the game of golf.

Photo by Pixabay on Pexels.com Rory McIlroy played really well but just didn’t make any putts on the final day. Cameron Young had a fantastic Open to finish second after eagling the very last hole at St Andrews. Victor Hovland had his best major but didn’t have his best stuff on Sunday to finish tied for fourth with Tommy Fleetwood. Dustin Johnson was thereabouts throughout the final round but never really close enough. Jordan Spieth had yet another top ten finish. Adam Scott had a solid major to finish in the top twenty. However, the day and the championship belonged to Australian Cameron Smith. He has engraved his name in perpetuity as the winner of the 150th Open Championship. Cam Smith wins The Open in a virtuoso performance. ©GolfDom Read the full article

LaTourette Golf Course - Hole 10
It seems to be generally well known that Tiger’s Dad, Earl Woods, first took up golf at Dyker Beach while he was stationed at Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. However, it was the 10th hole at LaTourette Golf Course in Staten Island that ultimately left the most lasting impact on Mr. Woods’ game.
The 10th hole is a straightaway par 5 measuring 519 yards from the back tees. There isn’t much trouble to be found, but a tee shot that is severely left will go out of bounds. A tee shot hit far to the right will land safely in the adjacent 18th fairway, though the second shot will likely be blocked out by a row of trees separating the 10th and 18th holes.
Prior to the 2002 US Open at Bethpage Black, Mr. Woods spoke with The New York Times and described one memorable experience playing the 10th hole. He said he “hit a big drive but it sliced over into the [18th] fairway,” whereas his elderly playing partner “blooped it down the middle.” He continued, “I was all over the place while she went bloop, bloop just short of the green. She chipped over a bunker to 6 inches for her par 5, then I two-putted for a 9. That's when I learned this game was all about accuracy over length.''
Mr. Woods stated that the 10th hole was where his “whole golf philosophy developed,” a philosophy he would later share with Tiger. He explained that “until [Tiger] was 13, he used a 3-wood or a 1-iron. I taught him the lesson I learned at LaTourette, that the best club off the tee is the one you can hit in the fairway.”
Tiger would most famously employ his Dad’s lesson at the 2006 Open Championship at Royal Liverpool, where he hit his driver only once during all four rounds. The R&A would later describe Tiger’s performance as “an imperious display of strategic links golf” and a “masterclass in long and mid-iron play.” As Tiger (hopefully) returns to competition in the upcoming Open Championship at St. Andrews, pay attention to his club selection off the tee. To the extent he tends to lay up more often than other competitors, it’s interesting to think that his strategy might have its origins in New York City municipal golf.

GolfToons 49 - Lost Between Holes
The stand alone golf course is becoming a rarity. Increasingly golf courses are just one item on an amenity package for a high end housing development.
This has led to some vast distances between holes that often requires driving through neighborhoods in search of the next tee box. This phenomena has also forced some modern courses to ban walking and make use of a golf cart mandatory.
The truly “walkable” course design is usually an older course built in the last century and sadly they seem to be going the way of the 3 iron.
