Bong Wish - Hazy Road
With a band name like Bong Wish (and an album title like Hazy Road), you might think you're in for something spectacularly stoner-ific. And I'm not saying you couldn't get nicely toasted while listening to this LP, but it is actually quite sharp and alert. Led by Mariam Saleh, the Boston-based group has put together a stellar collection of perfectly jangly folk rock, calling to mind the west coast sounds of The Byrds and Love (as well as their Paisley Underground spawn Opal and Rain Parade). I also get a little hint of vintage Barbara Manning in Saleh's vocals — always a good thing. Maybe even a little Talullah-era Go-Betweens?! Whatever — each tune here is a little gem whether Bong Wish is choogling mightily on the title track (who plays that awesome guitar solo?!) or drifting dreamily on the autoharp-led "Moon For You." Very very nice.

1/21/24.
Bong Wish is the solo project of Mariam Saleh (Boston, Massachusetts). The physical LP is available at venerable label Feeding Tube Records. The Feeding Tube page mentions that Saleh is a fan of both Love and Ween. It also mentions The Byrds, Vashti Bunyan and Magnetic Fields.
Of course, I've got to throw in a New Zealand comparison. I can't help but hear Look Blue Go Purple or the solo work of Francisca Griffin.

Important follow up to this poll:
Out of respect for Aladdin's landslide win in the first poll and subsequent crowning as the King of the Blunt Rotation, he has been removed from the bracket and replaced with Kristoff who frankly I think fits into this bracket much better.
Once again, apologies to the other Disney princes who have been snubbed. I only get ten slots per poll and honestly I don't think Hercules would have been invited. Robin Hood and Quasimodo probably would have been but they're too busy cooking meth Breaking Bad style to partake of the devil's lettuce, and Milo Thatcher is currently taking as much Adderall as he can buy on a linguist with a focus on lost languages' salary.
We here at Prince Blunt Rotation Inc. wish them and our contestants the best of luck and the highest of highs. May the worst nightmare blunt rotation invitee win.

My own take on the crying Puss in Boots meme on Twitter…this time with scenes that actually traumatized me!

I watched Strong Girl Bong-Soon and honestly, it's a mess (spoilers). The sideplots were boring, I hated the SML (Guk-doo) he was annoying and sexist and pushy, the mom and dad's relationship made me cringe because she is so abusive even if she didn't actually hit him, and a lot of it made like zero sense.
BUT
Min-hyuk is the cutest, funniest, nicest boy ever and I want to punch the people who made him cry. And he loves Bong-soon for who she is and doesn't care that she has super powers and it was great!
And then Bong-soon was so funny and so cute and she looked hilarious carrying huge men around and fighting because she's so tiny. She has the best facial expressions:
And the scene with the bomb where Min-hyuk is trying to save Bong-soon and he can't, but he's tried so hard his hand was all bloody was so good
So I kept watching it anyway because those two were carrying the entire drama. Honestly, I would have watched 16 episodes of just Min-hyuk and Bong-soon hanging out. Or if they did more of his family plot (like did he inherit the company or not? They never made that clear). Any scene that they weren't in seemed totally superfluous.
The only thing I didn't like about their plot-line was the very ending. I thought it was funny that they had twin girls, but as much as I love Bong-soon fully committing to being a superhero, someone with super strength needs to watch those babies. I didn't know why they didn't bring back her grandma or have her at home because those tiny super humans are dangerous.
