Debut Art is proud to announce that we now represent artist Deb JJ Lee.
Deb JJ Lee (she/they) is an illustrator and graphic novelist based in Brooklyn, New York, who began their dive into independent illustration in 2020 after leaving Silicon Valley as a full-time product designer/illustrator. A maximalist first and human second, Deb has a penchant for making sense of clutter, detail, and body language into lush unique compositions, patterns, and bold color palettes to communicate the right emotion to the viewer, whether it is through a book cover, poster, or an entire graphic novel. Their first graphic novel titled IN LIMBO, a YA memoir that explores the intersection of mental illness, Korean-American diaspora, family conflict, publishes in 2023 with First Second Books. Following the debut is THE OTHER SIDE OF TOMORROW by Tina Cho where Deb illustrates a tale of children escaping North Korea, which will land on bookshelves in 2024 with Harper Collins. While they particularly enjoy working with emotional storytelling involving AAPI topics, Deb is adamant about having an evergreen breadth of projects that expands beyond Asian America that allows them to make a meticulous illustration each better than the last. CONFLUENCE INSTITUTE, THE: RETHINKING ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION (ODILE DECQ)
Odile Decq first came to prominence in 1990 with the completion of Banque Populaire de L'Ouest in Rennes, designed with her late husband and partner Benoit Cornette. In recent years, she has completed the extension to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome (2010), The Phantom Restaurant at the Opera Garnier in Paris (2011), FRAC Bretagne Contemporary Art Museum in Rennes (2012), the renovation of Antti Lovag's bubble house Maison Bernard in France (2016) and Le Cargo office space for tech start-ups in Paris (2016). In 2016, she was awarded the Jane Drew prize for women in architecture.
In this talk, Decq describes setting up her own school of architecture in 2012, the Confluence Institute, housed in a converted railway building in Lyon. With its emphasis on making, the school offers a radical alternative to conventional architectural education.

EWHA WOMANS UNIVERSITY: BUILDING AS LANDSCAPE (DOMINIQUE PERRAULT)
Leading French architect Dominique Perrault moved onto the world stage with the completion of the French National Library in 1989. With a portfolio that spans major public buildings, apartment blocks, hotels, offices and master plans, his design for an Olympic Village helped Paris win its bid for the 2024 Games.
In this talk, Dominique Perrault discusses his new campus centre for Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Korea. Challenging the client's competition brief, he blended the building into the landscape to connect the campus to the city and create a new public park and, inadvertently, a space for political protest. As Perrault explains, his design for Ewha grew out of his ongoing interest in underground architecture which began with the French National Library.

FANGSHAN TANGSHAN NATIONAL GEOPARK (ODILE DECQ)
In this talk, Decq discusses her Fangshan Tangshan National Geopark Museum in Nanjing China (2014). Inspired by the way bondage accentuates the curves of the female body, she designed a building that responds to and exaggerates the existing landscape with a central atrium that varies floor to floor to challenge the prescriptive circulation of traditional museums.

KEVIN ROCHE: THE QUIET ARCHITECT
Still working at age 95, Pritzker Prize winning Irish-American architect Kevin Roche is an enigma. He's reached the top of his profession, but has little interest in celebrity and eschews the label "Starchitect". Despite a lifetime of acclaimed work that includes the United Nations Plaza in Manhattan, the Ford Foundation, Oakland Museum of California, and 40 years of designing new galleries for The Metropolitan Museum in New York, he has no intention of ever retiring and keeps looking forward. Roche's architectural philosophy focuses on creating "a community for a modern society" and he has been credited with creating green buildings before they became part of the public consciousness. The film transcends the world of architecture to present a life-philosophy we can all aspire to.

FEDERAL ENVIRONMENT AGENCY, THE: AIMING HIGH WITH SUSTAINABLE DESIGN (MATTHIAS SAUERBRUCH & LOUISA HUTTON)
Matthias Sauerbruch and Louisa Hutton set up Sauerbruch Hutton in 1989, now based in Berlin. Their best known buildings include the GSW Headquarters in Berlin, for which they were nominated for the Stirling Prize in 2000.
In this talk they focus on the Federal Environment Agency in Dessau, completed in 2005. With its mix of low-tech materials and high-tech production processes, the building was designed to showcase the best in sustainable architecture.
Hutton and Sauerbruch describe the development of the building's curvilinear plan along the route of an old railway line, and their use of colour, a constant in their work; how any sustainable building is only as efficient as the people who inhabit it; and how a concern for environmental efficiency has been a running thread through their work, from their Photonics Centre Berlin in 1998, through Museum Brandhorst, 2008, Munich Re, 2014, and the soon to be completed M9 Museum in Venice-Metre.

NO DISCIPLINE (RON ARAD)
Israeli-born Ron Arad is a prolific designer whose output spans buildings, furniture and sculpture. Perhaps his best known work, the Design Museum in Holon, Israel, has become a symbol for the city. His recent projects include a cancer treatment centre, an upside down tower and the interior makeover of the famous Watergate Hotel in Washington, DC.
In this talk, Ron Arad discusses training at the Architectural Association during the 1970s, his first success with the iconic 1981 Rover Chair, current architecture and design projects, and the freedom that comes from embracing many disciplines.

CONCRETE LOVE
Director: Maurizius Staerkle Drux
Gottfried Bohm is widely regarded as Germany's preeminent architect. The son of a master builder of churches, he's also the patriarch of a modern architecture dynasty to which his three sons Stephan, Peter and Paul belong. But with the death of Gottfried's wife Elisabeth, also an architect and a key source of inspiration for all the Bohm builders, the family loses its emotional lodestone.
Concrete Love paints an intimate portrait of the complexity and inseparability of life, love and art.

LEADENHALL BUILDING, THE: THE SERVANT & THE SERVED (GRAHAM STIRK)
Graham Stirk is a senior partner at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, having first joined the practice in 1983 when it was titled the Richard Rogers Partnership. As principal architect on buildings that include the office scheme 88 Wood Street, the luxury residential building One Hyde Park, two airports and a winery, he helps steer the design direction of the practice.
Here Stirk discusses The Leadenhall Building - a speculative office tower in London's financial district. The tower is inclined along the south side to avoid blocking a key view of St Paul's Cathedral, with core services housed in a vertical "cassette" on the north side. The concept of distinct served and servant spaces, borrowed from Louis Kahn, recurs throughout the work of the practice. Stirk also explores the challenges of building across the street from the Lloyd's Register of Shipping - the first building he worked on after graduation and, in contrast to Leadenhall, one of the most bespoke office buildings on the planet - and explains the 11 year lag between commission and completion.

SUNCHEON CITY, KOREA: HOLDING THE ECO-LINE (CHARLES JENCKS)
American-born Charles Jencks is a landscape architect, theorist and critic best known for his Garden of Cosmic Speculation, near Dumfries, Scotland, and his writings on post-modernism. He has designed landscapes projects around the world, including Parco Portello in Milan, Northumberlandia near Newcastle, England and Wu Chi at the Olympic Forest Park in Beijing. Jencks is also co-founder of the Maggie's Centres - a series of cancer care centres designed by leading modern architects, named in honour of his late wife Maggie Keswick.
In this talk, Jencks discusses his recent project Holding The Eco-Line, a landscape design for the Suncheon Bay Expo in 2013. He explains the development of the design, and his Korean hosts' reaction to it, as well as the importance of symbolism in his work. He also discusses his latest creation the Crawick Multiverse, inspired by cutting edge theories of the origin of the universe.

GRAY MATTERS
Director: Marco Orsini
The documentary Gray Matters explores the long, fascinating life of architect and designer Eileen Gray, whose uncompromising vision defined and defied the practice of modernism in decoration, design and architecture.
Making a reputation with her lacquer work in the beginning of the 20th century, Gray became a critically acclaimed and sought-after decorator and designer before reinventing herself as an architect. Her first and most famous building, a modernist villa on the French Riviera called E-1027, was for many years mistakenly credited to her mentor, Le Corbusier. For the most part, her pioneering work was done quietly, privately and to her own specifications. But she lived long enough (98 years old) to be rediscovered and acclaimed. Today, with her work commanding extraordinary prices and attention, her legacy, like its creator, remains elusive, contested, and compelling.

MANCHESTER SCHOOL OF ART (KEITH BRADLEY)
Keith Bradley is senior partner at Feilden Clegg Bradley Studio, based in Bath, UK. Bradley led FCBS's best known work, the Stirling Prize-winning Accordia Housing Project in Cambridge. He's also worked on major urban regeneration schemes, public museums, galleries and academic buildings.
In this talk, Bradley explores FCBS's Manchester School Of Art extension building, completed in April 2013. He discusses the evolution of the design, which includes a vertical gallery space where students can showcase their work, an interactive hybrid studio intended to foster creative collaboration between students from different disciplines and triple height columns with a relief cast decorative detail inspired by the textiles of Lewis Day, who taught at the school a century ago. Manchester School Of Art was shortlisted for the 2014 Stirling Prize.

Since then, the firm has built a portfolio of international sports buildings including London's Wembley Stadium, the Yankees ballpark in New York, Nationals Park in Washington DC, Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire, England, the London 2012 Olympic Stadium and the forthcoming Qatar World Cup Stadium.
In this talk, Sheard compares the experience of designing the Sydney and London Olympic Stadiums, and explores how his firm has led the way in the evolution of sports venues into the complex, quality buildings they are today.

Director: Marcia Connelly & Katherine Knight
In a rapidly urbanized world, what does the future hold for traditional rural societies? As Fogo Island, a small community off the coast of Newfoundland, struggles to sustain its unique way of life in the face of a collapse of its cod fishing industry, architect Todd Saunders and social entrepreneur Zita Cobb's vision for positive change results in the envisioning, designing and building of strikingly original architecture that will become a catalyst for social change.
Experience this staggeringly beautiful place and how the community and local workers, together with Saunders and Cobb, come together and play a role in this creative process during a time of optimism and uncertain hope. Change is coming to Fogo Island.

SAGRADA: THE MYSTERY OF CREATION
Director: Stefan Haupt
One of the most iconic structures ever built, Barcelona's La Sagrada Familia is a unique and fascinating architectural project conceived by Antoni Gaudi in the late 19th century. More than 125 years after construction began, the basilica still remains unfinished. Sagrada: The Mystery of Creation celebrates Gaudi's vision and the continuing work of architects as they strive to complete the colossal project while delving into the process of artistic creation in a historical context.
La Sagrada Familia was commissioned by the Order of St Joseph in 1882. After conflicts arose between the Order and the original architect, 31 year old Antoni Gaudi was hired to complete the design. A devout Catholic and architectural prodigy, Gaudi envisioned a place of worship that combined elements of classic French Gothic style and the curvilinear, organic aspects of the budding Art Nouveau school.
Despite decades of delays, thousands of artisans, laborers, and designers have contributed to the ambitious and glorious landmark. Inspired by Gaudi's vision, the film explores our fundamentally human search for the meaning of existence, and the quest for creative expression.
In the midst of the hustle and bustle of the Catalonian metropolis, the documentary investigates the structural developments of the Sagrada Familia while allowing the audience time to observe, perceive, and reflect upon the historical, artistic and personal significance of the basilica.

SUKKAH CITY
Director: Jason Hutt
When best-selling author Joshua Foer (Moonwalking with Einstein) began to build his first sukkah, a small hut that Jews build and dwell in every fall for the holiday of Sukkot, he wanted to move beyond the generic plywood boxes and canvas tents that have become the unimaginative status quo. He discovered that while the bible outlines the basic parameters for what a sukkah should look like and how it should function, it leaves plenty of room for variation and interpretation. Foers thought, 'what if contemporary architects and designers were challenged to design and construct twelve radical sukkahs? What would they come up with?' And so was born the design competition and exhibition known as "Sukkah City."
Sukkah City chronicles the architecture competition created by bestselling author Joshua Foer and Roger Bennett (Reboot co-founder) that explored the creative potential of the ancient Jewish sukkah and created a temporary exhibition of 12 newly designed sukkahs in the heart of New York City. The film goes behind the scenes of the jury day, the construction, and the exhibition to provide an entertaining and inspiring portrait of the project's visionary architects, planners and structures and celebrates an exciting, singular moment in the American Jewish experience.

16 ACRES
Director: Richard Hankin
The rebuilding of ground zero is one of the most architecturally, politically, and emotionally complex urban renewal projects in history. The struggle has encompassed eleven years, nineteen government agencies, a dozen projects and over $20 billion. Aside from the engineering challenges, several constituencies-politicians, developers, architects, insurance companies, local residents, and relatives of 9/11 victims-profess a claim to the site and are often in conflict with one another. According to The New York Times, "Where some saw lucrative real estate, others saw a graveyard. Where some saw Rockefeller Center or Lincoln Center or Grand Central Terminal, others saw Gettysburg."
Today, three thousand workers are building four of the tallest skyscrapers in America, a train station, a performing arts center and a sacred memorial and museum. What will emerge in downtown Manhattan will redefine the city and country for generations.
16 Acres is the story of how and why this historic project got built. At the heart of the story is the dramatic tension between noblest intentions, the desire of everyone involved to "get it right," and the politics, hubris, ego, and ideology. As with all great urban projects, from the Pyramids to Rome's Colleseum to Rockefeller Center, a small group of powerful people will dictate the outcome. With inside access to the project and these key players, 16 Acres tells the story behind the headlines.
Featuring Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Governor George Pataki, Chris Ward (Executive Director of the Port Authority), developer Larry Silverstein, architects Daniel Libeskind, David Childs, and Michael Arad, and relatives and advocates of the 9/11 victims. The also introduces a supporting cast of Pritzker-prize winning international architects and engineers; influential journalists who have covered the rebuilding; construction workers, as well as neighbors, critics and observers who are very much part of the fabric of New York.
DVD / 2012 / 95 minutes
OYLER HOUSE, THE
Director: Mike Dorsey
In 1959, a working-class government employee named Richard Oyler, living in the tiny desert town of Lone Pine, California, asked world-famous modern architect Richard Neutra to design his modest family home. To Oyler's surprise, Neutra agreed. Thus began an unlikely friendship that would last for the rest of Neutra's life.
Considered the "father of California Modern Architecture," Time Magazine put Richard Neutra on their cover in 1949, ranking him second only to Frank Lloyd Wright among America's greatest architects. The Oyler House: Richard Neutra's Desert Retreat explores how a man of his stature came to befriend this modest, small-town family, and his love for the home's stunning desert setting, which Neutra compared to the grandness of the mystical Gobi Desert.
Now owned by the actress Kelly Lynch (Road House, Drugstore Cowboy) and her writer-producer husband Mitch Glazer (Scrooged, Magic City), the post & beam-style home and its exotic surroundings shine through beautiful 5K digital cinematography, and the story comes to life through interviews with Richard Oyler, Kelly Lynch, Neutra's two sons, including modern architect Dion Neutra, and well-known Los Angeles real estate agent Crosby Doe, who has represented homes by some of history's greatest modern architects.
DVD / 2012 / 46 minutes
EAMES: THE ARCHITECT AND THE PAINTER
Directors: Jason Cohn & Bill Jersey
The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames are widely regarded as America's most important designers. Perhaps best remembered for their mid-century plywood and fiberglass furniture, the Eames Office also created a mind-bending variety of other products, from splints for wounded military during World War II, to photography, interiors, multi-media exhibits, graphics, games, films and toys. But their personal lives and influence on significant events in American life - from the development of modernism, to the rise of the computer age - has been less widely understood. Narrated by James Franco, Eames: the Architect and the Painter is the first film dedicated to these creative geniuses and their work.

HOW MUCH DOES YOUR BUILDING WEIGH, MR. FOSTER?
Director: Norberto Lopez Amado & Carlos Carcas
A portrait of one of the world's premier architects, How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr. Foster? follows Norman Foster's unending quest to improve the quality of life through design. By revealing his origins to how his dreams and influences inspired the design of emblematic projects like the world's largest building and its tallest bridge, Foster offers some striking solutions to humanity's increasing demand on urban centers.

ALL CHANGE AT BILBAO (MICHAEL WILFORD)
Michael Wilford, unsupported by his father in his choice of career, had to train the hard way, at North London Polytechnic evening school while working by day for various architectural practices. By good fortune, one of these was Stirling & Gowan who had just won Leicester University Engineering School competition. Later, when Stirling & Gowan split up, Wilford was invited to rejoin the practice and later became a partner.
Michael Wilford, as the former partner of the late James Stirling, inherited the design project for the beautiful new bus station/railway station for Bilbao in northern Spain. At the point when Stirling died, the contract for a second version of the scheme had just been signed. Now, a third version, developed further by the new partnership Michael Wilford & Partners, has been agreed; and it is this version which Wilford describes.
In it the aim is to contribute something to the city generally, to reinforce and intensify the activity of the central area. The new building reconnects the old and new parts of the city. It contains a bus station and two railway systems (at two different levels) with, sandwiched between, a public area for waiting, ticketing and shopping; plus a World Trade Centre, offices and public housing.
CD-ROM / 1995 / 43 minutes
SPACE ACTIVATED BY TECHNOLOGY (CRAIG HODGETTS)
American born Craig Hodgetts graduated from Yale with a degree in architecture in 1967. He then set up an architectural studio with a variety of partners beginning with Peter de Bretteville, then with Robert Mangurian and, since 1984, with Hsin-Ming Fung.
Over the years he has taught at California Institute of the Arts (where he was Associate Dean from 1969 - 1971), UCLA, and currently at the University of Pennsylvania. He has received many awards for his work, which has been widely published and exhibited.
In this talk he says that he and his work-mates like to think of themselves as a bunch of garage architects working in the Los Angeles tradition. In addition to designing buildings, they have pursued a wide range of research and design projects - a prefab system, a mobile theatre, furniture, films, tiny projects like an interactive video kiosk and a 'cookie' kiosk for mass production - and now they are building a house for the partners themselves.
In all their projects their preoccupation has been with the inherent geometry of the making of a place, and thinking of their buildings as a collage of spatial typologies. Space is defined by accommodating functions as opposed to spatial definitions.

ART, TECHNOLOGY & NATURE (GYORGY KEPES)
The artist Gyorgy Kepes studied in his native Hungary and worked in Austria, Germany and England before moving to America in the early 1950s. There he ran courses in advertising design for the Art Directors' Club in Chicago and was, for six years, Head of the Department of Light and Colour at the Illinois Institute of Technology School of Design. He subsequently taught in various colleges and headed for many years the Centre for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Kepes has divided his time between painting, teaching and experimenting with motion pictures and graphic design, consistently believing in an art that combines science and aesthetics.
The ideas contained in his book "Language Of Vision", published in 1961, became the content of the Basic Design courses now included in art school curricula. He had reached his eighties by the time of this talk, but his interest in the possibilities of light, colour, movement and technology continued.
In his talk, he shares his ideas about the relationship between the visual environment and the artist's vision, and shows beautiful examples of kinetic art, sometimes on a vast scale.
