Golden Boy

He was the Golden Boy of Labors past And held the record for the quickest yard; His love for all Australians beyond class, A mediator, effective, with high regard. Bob Hawke was a Pime Minister for all; On progress he campaigned passionately; His projects and reforms were overhauls;  Our Medicare, our whole economy! Let’s talk plainly lest we forget the stakes; There’s little time to go fore we decide. Another leader passed and our hearts break As dire straits have now been amplified! Don’t let Bobs legacy be all for naught, Let’s end the foul stagnation that he fought. 

Bob Hawke. I photographed the great man at the Byron Writers festival some years ago, he wasn’t keen to be shot and i think it shows, but i didn’t want the standard smiling Bob anyway, i wanted something more serious. The shot was a finalist in the National Portrait gallery that year, Bob wasn’t mad about the shot and only gave my permission to use it at the very last minute...... Death of former Australian Labor Prime Minister Bob Hawke

Labor's Bob Hawke, who headed the Australian government from 1983 to 1991, died on Thursday at the age of 89, his family said. Current Prime Minister Scott Morrison, a member of the Liberal Party, praised the memory of his predecessor. "Bob Hawke was a great Australian, who led and served our country with passion, courage, and intellectual power that strengthened our country," he wrote on social media. The death of Bob Hawke, who was the 23rd prime minister of Australia, comes two days before Saturday's general election, for which the Labor Party is given a slight lead in the polls. "The Australians loved Bob Hawke because they knew that Bob loved them, that was true until the end," said Labor Party leader Bill Shorten. I was very sad to hear of Bob Hawke’s passing today. As a child growing up in Canberra in the 80’s he was the only prime minister I knew, so it was a surprise when Keating took over. I had the opportunity to photograph Hawke in his Sydney office in 2006 while working on the ABC’s Australian Story. He’s only 5’8” to my 6’5”, so I’m definitely crouching down in this photo of the two of us for him to be able to reach his arm around. It’s always uncanny when the people we’ve seen as characters behind the TV screen appear before us in real life, but a good reminder that they are just human beings like us.
