I see a lot of new people getting excited about the NES Tetris record through the aGameScout video (which is great!), but there is one piece of context which I really wish was included that hasn't been.
Thor Aackerlund, the guy who "was the first to reach level 30 in 2011," had a lengthy history with Tetris. He was the champion of the 1990 Nintendo World Championship, which included Tetris as one of the games, and during that time, he claimed to be able to reach level 30. In 1990, the Tetris metagame was in such a place that many top players did not believe him, some even claiming level 30 was impossible. Between 1990 and 2010, Thor Aackerlund lived a private life without any real kind of online presence, only returning to the world of public Tetris competition for the documentary Ecstacy of Order and the first Classic Tetris World Championship in 2010. After his performances in 2010 and his on-camera record in 2011, it is now widely believed he did actually achieve level 30 in 1990.
I get why this didn't get covered in detail in the aGameScout video. It's a lot of ground to cover that has less to do with Blue Scuti than it does Thor Aackerlund, but I think it is context that makes the whole recent explosion in young talent even more impressive. The ramp up from level 30 to level 31 didn't take seven years. It took 28 years, over twice as long as Blue Scuti has been alive. Which I think makes the ramp up from level 31 to level 157 in just six years all the more impressive.
as an ex-13-year-old-with-a-mullet-who-played-a-block-game-5-hours-per-day-everyday, Blue Scuti's victory has redeemed my past self in ways i thought impossible
Just got back from the ATG expo and watching the tetris tournament. it was amazing to see the pro players. also met a lot of cool people. met blue scuti, doge nestris and pixel andy. They were all really chill. also met some of the OG activision devs and the voice actress for peach from the super mario bros super show. all in all it was really fun.
The game was beaten in the sense that the player managed to crash it
Technically, Willis — aka “blue scuti” in the gaming world — made it to what gamers call a “kill screen,” a point where the Tetris code glitches, crashing the game. That might not sound like much of a victory to anyone thinking that only high scores count, but it's a highly coveted achievement in the world of video games, where records involve pushing hardware and software to their limits. And beyond.
It's also a very big deal for players of Tetris, which many had long considered unbeatable. That's partly because the game doesn't have a scripted ending; those four-block shapes just keep falling no matter how good you get at stacking them into disappearing rows. Top players continued to find ways to extend their winning streaks by staying in the game to reach higher and higher levels, but in the end, the game beat them all.
Until, that is, Willis managed on Dec. 21 to trigger a kill screen on Level 157, which the gaming world takes as a victory over the game — something along the lines of pushing the software past its own limits.
The makers of Tetris agree. “Congratulations to ‘blue scuti’ for achieving this extraordinary accomplishment, a feat that defies all preconceived limits of this legendary game,” Tetris CEO Maya Rogers said in a statement. Rogers noted that Tetris will celebrate its 40th anniversary this year and called Willis' victory a “monumental achievement.”
Hello Donnie! I'm a newbie around here but I wanted to ask you about your info on the 🌟 stars 🌌? I've seemingly been falling back into my hyperfixation of stars and space itself and I noticed you know a thing or two about astrophysics! I would love to go back to my old roots and relearn about space!
Thank you and I hope you have a great week! Make sure to take care of yourself as always 🌟💙
Greetings, fellow astrophysics enjoyer!
I apologise for not answering sooner, but HERE I am now!
Welcome to my blog ✨️
An infodump about stars? Let's go!
🌟What are stars?🌟
Stars are massive, luminous spheres of plasma that emit energy through nuclear fusion. They are the building blocks of galaxies & responsible for creating & sustaining life on Earth.
It’s impossible to know how many stars exist, but it's estimated that in our Milky Way alone, there are about 300 billion.
There are many different types of stars: from small, dim red dwarfs to massive, bright supergiants.
The classification of stars is based on their size, temperature, & brightness in the Hertzsprung-Russell-Diagram.
The most common types of stars are main-sequence stars, which are in a stable state & fuse hydrogen into helium in their nuclei.
There are also red giants, which have exhausted their hydrogen fuel & are now converting helium into heavier elements, with iron being the last element possible (they can't fuse iron)
Then there are white dwarfs, which are remnants of small or medium-sized stars that have exhausted their fuel
And my favourite type of stars: neutron stars, which are incredibly dense remnants of supernova explosions.
Stars come in a wide variety of sizes: some are only a few times larger than the Earth, while others are hundreds of times larger than our Sun.
The largest known star is UY Scuti, which is estimated to be 1700 times larger than our Sun. If UY Scuti were located in the centre of our solar system, it would be beyond the orbit of Saturn.
While the largest stars are certainly impressive, they are also relatively rare. Most of the stars in the universe are much smaller than our sun & the most common type is red dwarfs (yes, NOT the yellow main-sequence stars!).
The colour of a star is determined by its temperature, with colder stars appearing red and hotter stars appearing blue.
The most common colour of stars is yellow. Yellow stars are usually main-sequence stars, with hydrogen being converted into helium in their nuclei.
Yellow stars exist in a stable state of nuclear fusion, converting hydrogen to helium & radiating x-rays. This process emits an enormous amount of energy, keeping the star hot and shining brightly.
Offended: WHY IS THE BEST COLOURED STAR CALLED BROWN INSTEAD OF THE MOST MAGNIFICENT COLOUR: PURPLE???
🌟How do stars form?🌟
Stars are formed from clouds of hydrogen & dust that collapse under the influence of their own gravity. These clouds are called nebulae. When a cloud collapses, it heats up & starts to rotate, forming a protostar.
When the protostar reaches a certain temperature & pressure, nuclear fusion begins with that the star is born.
🌟How long do stars live?🌟
Stars spend 90% of their lives in their main sequence phase.
But all stars run out of their valuable fuel someday.
Smaller stars will simply disappear into obscurity, while larger stars will undergo a massive explosion known as a supernova. The remnants of these explosions can form black holes or neutron stars.
The lifespan of a star, therefore, depends on its mass.
Smaller stars burn their fuel much more slowly than larger ones, which means they have a much longer lifespan.
A red dwarf star can burn for trillions of years, while a massive supergiant may only last a few million years.
Earth’s sun is considered an average-size yellow dwarf star & is 4.6 billion years old & it's predicted that the sun will remain in its main sequence stage for several billion more years until it evolves into a red giant.
The red giant phase is actually a prelude to a star shedding its outer layers & becoming a small, dense body called a white dwarf.
White dwarfs cool for billions of years. Some, if they exist as part of a binary star system, may gather excess matter from their companion stars until their surfaces explode, triggering a bright nova.
Eventually, all white dwarfs go dark & cease producing energy. At this point, which we have yet to observe, they become known as black dwarfs.
What's your thoughts on Blue Scuti "beating" NES Tetris, as a Tetris fan?
oh man are you kidding. that's the fucking bomb. do we still say that?? it's true. showstopping. he can play better at 13 than i can at 34 and good for him. bragging rights for eternity. i wish i was even 10% as fast as he is. like i'm good but not that good. that's beyond comprehension
Willie Gibson recently shared a remarkable video on YouTube capturing the moment the classic video game experienced a crash at level 157. The astonished 13-year-old exclaimed, "Oh my god... I'm going to pass out."
Expressing the intensity of the experience, Willie stated, "I can't feel my fingers, I can't feel my hands… I'm going to pass out," while struggling to catch his breath. He added, "I'm shaking so bad." In an unprecedented feat, Willie managed to cause the game to crash in just 38 minutes, an accomplishment never before achieved by a human player.
Known as blue scuti on YouTube, Willie's exceptional achievement challenges the conventional limits of Tetris, the iconic video game created by Soviet engineer Alexey Pajitnov in 1984. The game involves players maneuvering and arranging falling blocks to complete lines, which then disappear. As players progress, the speed of the falling blocks increases.
Previously, it was widely believed that level 29, introducing the fastest speed in the game, marked the farthest level attainable. However, aGameScout, a YouTuber, revealed in an analysis of Willie's accomplishment that someone first reached level 30 in 2011. While other human players have since surpassed this milestone, only AI computers had reached Tetris's true ending until now.
In his YouTube video description, Willie reflected on his unexpected success, stating, "When I started playing this game, I never expected to ever crash the game or beat it." He highlighted that his run set records for Overall Score, Level, Lines, and 19 Score, making it a monumental achievement in the world of Tetris.
13-year-old Blue Scuti is now the best Tetris player in the world after becoming the first human player to beat the NES version of the game by playing until reaching the kill screen. “I’m going to pass out. I can’t feel my fingers.”

Bu çocuk Tetris'i yenen birinci kişi oldu
Bu çocuk Tetris’i yenen birinci kişi oldu
