The new Bild Lilli book has arrived from Switzerland and features amazing pictures of the original Bild Lilli fashions, modeled on Peter Isler’s amazing collection of Bild Lilli dolls (including some ultra rare brunette and redhead Lilli’s).

The cover mimics the original Bild Lilli fashion catalog from the 1950s:

And the back cover features an old advertisement suggesting a gentleman could get a Bild Lilli doll as a cute gift for a loved one:

Bild Lilli, the Original German Barbie Doll ♡ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - With the new Barbie movie coming up I thought I should make some Barbie inspired art. With some digging for references I came across the Bild Lilli doll. After reading up on Lilli, I realized many people don't know that her design was stolen! I thought it was interesting and wanted to do a piece about Lilli. ♡

Bild Lilli was popular in Germany for being one of the first 'mature' dolls, described as sexy, young, innocent, and fresh. In the 50s' Lilli was created for a newspaper comic strip before she became a doll. When Lilli got popular from her comics there was a demand from many women for Bild Lilli dolls and was later marketed for kids. With Bild Lilli, kids could dress her up in various fashion (much like Barbie).

The owners of Mattel had taken a trip to Germany where they saw the Bild Lilli Doll. They were enamored by Lilli and decided to take one back to America. Later on, in America a doll was put on the market who looked much like Bild Lilli, though her name was Barbie.

Here’s a different look at my @Barbie transformation! I really loved doing this one, since I don’t think there are too many women that are as iconic as Barbie. And what I can’t stand, is how some people trash her legacy, and say how she’s nothing more than an unrealistic expectation for young women, when she defied boundaries by being whoever she wants to be. En su perfil, Barbie se define como una emprendedora y “asegura” que quiere inspirar a las niñas para que sueñen en grande. La muñeca dice ser una incubadora de sueños y que puede ser una consultora para que las niñas del mundo jueguen con su imaginación y cumplan todos sus anhelos. Algunos de los consejos que da Barbie es que “se diviertan jugando, viendo películas, disfrazándose y cambiando de look”. También asegura que es bueno tener un mentor que comparta con nosotras sus mejores consejos laborales. La creación de esta cuenta cae en el contexto del lanzamiento de la Barbie emprendedora, una de las últimas colecciones de Mattel. Este modelo, también descrito como Barbie de Sillicon Valley, ha recibido varias críticas, debido a que la imagen corporal que la muñeca proyecta desde sus inicios no debería ser un ejemplo a seguir para las niñas. “No creo que las mujeres y las niñas tomen nota de Barbie a la hora de pensar qué quieren ser cuando crezcan. I’ve been super busy lately and haven’t had time to post but I thought this dolly was worth finding some time for.

I’ve previously posted about how I wanted an 11.5 inch Bild Lilli doll because I’m so in love with the 7.5 inch version I was lucky enough to find. I even repainted a Hong Kong Lilli to tide myself over. I loved my Hong Kong Lilli, but I have a good dolly friend who absolutely fell in love with her so because I am a Good Friend™ I gave that Lilli to her. I missed having the larger size doll though and tried to find another Hong Kong Lilli to repaint but couldn’t find one that struck my fancy so I resigned myself to being 11.5 inch Lilli-less for a while.

And then this happened:

I definitely didn’t find this beauty at the Goodwill, but it I did get extremely lucky getting a mint condition Bild Lilli in an original outfit that is also in great shape for a very very good price.

And yes this tennis outfit is quite something!
