The Black Knight is a nightmare figure haunting all Faerun, a story to terrify the children and cruel reality to cow the grown alike. Survivors and witnesses are conflicted as to the exact nature of the knight, with rumours ranging from a damned warlock and wicked mercenary to a foul agent of the Hells unleashed from Avernus to bring low all Faerun, and none have been able to positively identify the knight beneath the dark helm. No matter the identity, the Black Knight has been a despised figure for over a decade, with no indication its terror will cease. Only in recent years have a scattered handful of whispers spread of a new ploy by the knight, that it now appears to offer aid to those most desperate, to fell only creatures with a brutal and monstrous efficiency. Despite this, none perceive the knight to be a force for good, simply waiting for the ruse to drop and the familiar monster to once more surge forth.
Overview.
Born on the Sword Coast to a minor noble family, Dane was unaware his uncle was the detested Black Knight until he received a summons to his dying uncle's bedside. There, his uncle revealed the truth to him and begged for Dane to redeem the Black Knight name. Dane inherited the mantle of the Black Knight, as well as Castle Garrett and the Ebony Blade, after his uncle's passing.
He is an Oath of Vengeance paladin, though it is heavily rumoured he is also both a barbarian and a warlock, on account of the Ebony Blade.
Following his first forays as the Black Knight, some notable figureheads are aware Dane is not the same Black Knight as his uncle. However, the greater populace of Faerun remains unaware the person behind the Black Knight has changed.
Dane is first encountered en route to Creche Y'llek in the fight with the Death Shepherds and Ghouls, and can be recruited following the fight.
He was tadpoled and taken from just outside Baldur's Gate. His initial tadpole connection shares an initial deep bloodthirst and rage, underpinned with determination and a will for betterment, along with images of a castle, desperately grabbing for a black blade, and winged horses.
The Ebony Blade.
It is Dane's intentions to rehabilitate the Black Knight's image as a force for good. However, he was unaware before beginning this venture that the Ebony Blade is cursed and manipulates its wielders into displaying their worst qualities in a search for blood and violence. He has since become aware that the sword is dangerous and evil in itself, though he cannot bring himself to give it up.
The Ebony Blade is a magical item and can be used by Dane to induce a rage-like state in battle, though whether it is the sword or Dane choosing to induce this is unclear. Dane is able to induce this himself on some occasions, although he must relive the worst moments of his life in order to achieve the emotional state necessary for this.
The sword amplifies rage and darker personality traits, inciting the wielder to main and kill. Those of weaker constitutions can be overwhelmed by the sword, often within days of continued wielding. Given the tying of the blade to the Whitman family line, it is only Dane who can relatively safely wield the blade, though he is not immune to the effects of the blade.
When first touching the sword, the amplification begins immediately, images of the past, present, and future actions of the blade flooding the mind, accompanied by phantasmal whispers, often to overwhelming effect. Owing to this, as well as the overprotection engendered by addiction to the blade, Dane is reticent to allow anyone touch the sword.
Personal quest.
His personal quest is set around breaking the curse on the Ebony Blade, as he understands it has a blood curse upon it that causes madness in his bloodline the more the sword is used to draw blood. Ultimately, it's revealed that there is no active blood curse at all and Merlin, the wizard who forged the Ebony Blade, Shield, Staff, and Chalice, wilfully made the sword that way as the dark partner of Excalibur, so that its wielder may carry out the rough and unpleasant work and Excalibur's wielder remain noble and exalted.
Throughout his personal quest, Dane also reveals that a previous partner turned his heart to stone as a means of stopping him feeling anything, including the rage and bloodthirst induced by the sword. If pursued romantically, he will also disclose at a later stage that the same partner forced him into a soulmate bond known as a Gann Josin. This bond allowed both to feel the other's emotions, and also allowed his partner an element of mental control over Dane and his actions.
His dream guardian takes the form of this partner and he is inclined to believe the guardian is correct, though he does concede that him taking more power may not be the most advisable idea, given the sword's hold on him.
The Gann Josin was broken once he was abducted onto the nautiloid and the nautiloid then smashed through realms. The stoneheart curse can be broken, although Dane doubts his willpower to resist the sword without it.
Additional information.
If he is recruited before the goblin camp, he will remark that the situation seems awfully familiar to him and that he has previously saved a grotto of elves from an orc and goblin invasion, where it was ultimately revealed the orcs and goblins were being controlled by a dark god purporting itself to be the lord of the slain -- but that couldn't possibly be happening again. He will also reference being friends with Ser Brian Braddock, a famed hero and Oath of the Crown paladin. He can be doubted on both counts, but he won't approve of either.
He also breeds and magically engineers winged horses, but won't disclose this without a small increase to his approval. He stays markedly quiet during Shadowheart's request for pack mules on the way to the Creche, but will be reunited with his steed Valinor before leaving the area. Well-read characters, such as Gale, can question him on his horses' names, as they are all named after fantasy novel characters.
Dane's approval is generally gained through acts of heroism, helping those in need, and being supportive of his actions to redeem the Black Knight mantle. He does not generally approve of acts of self-interest or attempting to take the Ebony Blade from him. He also does not approve of encouraging endings such as Karlach burning out, Gale ascending to godhood, or Shadowheart becoming a Dark Justiciar.
Prior to his approval level being increased, Dane continues to wear his armour's helmet while in camp in a bid to protect his identity and to continue the narrative that it is the previous, villainous, Black Knight making amends for his previous actions. Only when his approval rating is raised does he remove it and later explain that he is not the previous Black Knight.
His ideal ending is giving up the Ebony Blade for good, although it can be revealed in the epilogue that he is still trying to fix the Black Knight's reputation across Faerun and has since taken up the sword again.

Note
I have dog head cannons for the bg3 companions.
Karlach- Great Dane
Wyll- Beagle
Lae’zel- Doberman
Shadowheart- Dalmation
Astarion- Chihuahua
Gale- Poodle
I have reasons for all of them, but I'm in a rush right now
lmaooo okay wait these are pretty good
the only one I'm in disagreement with is gale but only because I want to split hairs and be like "this man has Goldendoodle energy + levels of high maintanence" and I mean that lovingly
and anyway we all know that Astarion is a cat but a chihuahua is close enough!!
I'll add that I think Minthara is a greyhound, Jaheira is some kind of fox terrior, Halsin is a Tibetan mastiff (pretty close to a bear imo), and Minsc is a boxer.
let me know your other thoughts in the replies maybe??

So I haven’t gotten to play as much BG3 as I would like because I’m working a crazy amount of overtime and I just haven’t had the free time, but I have to say so far I have been delighted by my choice to play a character based on one I played in a long running campaign, and it’s mostly because of Asterion.
See Tabea, my “Tav,” is largely a neutral good character. She wants to do the right thing and doesn’t have strong opinions on how best to do that. But Tabea is also, as established in the pen and paper campaign, fiercely loyal with terrible taste in friends.
In the table top game it was Frin’zarrk, a horrible little bastard drow warlock. She was perpetually exasperated by him and his lack of moral compass. Tabea spent the entire campaign arguing with him that the group’s name could not be “The Frin’zarrk Friends” because it sounded stupid and wasn’t true, but she also murdered the shit out of anything that got too close to seriously hurting him. Including the one time she used one of those ally gave her 30ft of teleport to put herself 20ft in the air above a Mindflayer about to kill him so that she could drop on it swords first.
And then in BG3 Asterion shows up and after a full day of making snarky comments about her decisions, he starts aggressively trying to flirt with her in camp. Which was funny first and foremost because Tabea is a big butch lady, and it was kinda like watching a toy poodle try and impress a Great Dane. And then the game let me have Tabea ask him if he was feeling ok which conjured images of her just checking his forehead for a fever or something. Did she suspect that he was trying to pull one over on her? No. Did she think he had maybe bumped his head? Yes.
A little while later, a partially exsanguinated Tabea is defending her little murder poodle to the rest of the party, and I’m cackling because my poor girl really will pick the most horrible little men to adopt and get irrationally protective of.
At least this game is also giving her the difficult choice of if she wants to be in lesbians with Lae’zel or Karlach. And a pet dog.

So here's a neat little list of my muses with D&D verses for the bg3 crowd =D
Wanda Maximoff, companion: wielder of an untold chaotic magic, will she reign in her might or will it destroy everything before the Absolute has a chance?
Dane Whitman, companion: bound eternally to the Ebony Blade, he is cursed to be driven to madness and doom. Dane is determined to wield his cursed blade in the service of good until the day he is destroyed by it's dark curse.
Delsin Rowe, companion: way of four elements monk. What, you thought monks were calm and collected? Sorry, Delsin has never made eye contact with a calm emotion. He's always ready to throw these hands.
Aedan Cousland, PC or companion: a noble of Baldur's Gate, second only to royalty, his family was betrayed and all but destroyed. The only scion left, he fully intends to take revenge once the threat of the Absolute is dealt with.
Daylen Amell, PC or companion: aka the Dark Urge, baby.
Klarion Bleak, companion: found at Last Light, he joins in the effort simply because he is looking for more fun. The curse has kept him trapped in the valley, and the sooner he's out the better. Once it's broken, he decides sticking with the party sounds like a blast.
The Shade, non party: a mysterious and powerful figure who will show up to give the party advice from time to time. His goals and motives are mysterious and impossible to know. The Shadow Curse, disturbingly, has no effect on him.
Naru Eaglespeaker, companion: a half feral barbarian. Don't let the snarling fool you, she's fiercely protective of the little band of misfits she finds herself with.
Blackstone, companion: a hero of ages past, due to a magical mishap he won’t age. Met in the Underdark or Mountain Pass before entering the cursed lands, he’ll be readying himself to head in and will offer to accompany the party.
Honestly, a bunch of others could fit in, too, but these are ones that most interest me.

12/13/14 for Tav asks
12. What opinion does your Tav have about the Gods?
Maya has a very complicated relationship with religion, because she's only really experienced it in extremes; she's endured terrible abuse in Lolth's name, but was also taken in and cared for by followers of Eilistraee who helped her find her own path and identity.
She considers herself a follower of Eilistraee, prays to her and would even say she loves her, but there's a part of her that will never really trust any god because she knows they don't really think or act the way mortals do. She's constantly prepared to feel abandoned by the gods, so there's a sort of surprised relief whenever she does pray and feel Eilistraee's presence.
13. How does your Tav feel about the wilderness?
Astrid loves it - it's why she became a ranger. Her grandmother was a wood-elf from a high ranking family in Highmoon, in the Dale Lands, and whenever she visited they would go out into the nearby forests and she felt more connected to the world there than anywhere. Her grandmother taught her to hunt and about the animals living there, helping her connect with her heritage, and as much as she likes the city Astrid still never feels more at home than when she's sleeping under the stars, surrounded by trees.
14. How does your Tav feel about the city?
Lilia finds it a bit overwhelming. She grew up in a temple at the edge of a fairly small town so she's not used to being around that many people, and she gets a bit jumpy and nervous of all the noise at first. But she also loves the excitement of it, and seeing so many different people all coming together, and she soon finds herself getting used to the pace of it. And she loves how many shops there are, and the many, many choices of clothes available.
