Movies I watched (and books I read) this week #65

Michael Haneke’s strange and disturbing debut film, The Seventh Continent. A dreary, mundane middle class Austrian family of father, mother and young daughter living ordinary and monotonous lives, with few signs of malcontent. But then they "decide to emigrate to Australia”. Retiring to their locked home instead, they systematically destroy all their earthly possessions, rip up and flush their money into the toilet, and then commit suicide together. Highly unsettling.

Drive my car X 2:

🎦🎦🎦 Drive my car is a 3 hour adaptation of three short Haruki Murakami stories. It starts with a 40-minute slow-built semi-prologue set in Tokyo, but it changes the color of his old Saab from yellow to red. I’m glad I saw two versions of Uncle Vanya a few months ago, as this play was used as the underlying metaphor for drama of the characters. 8/10.

🎦🎦🎦 My first Murakami read, the short story collection Men Without Women. Explorations of sex and lost loves, influence of Western tropes (Kafka, Beatles, Bepop Jazz, films) on Japanese characters, but mostly, indeed, how different men end up alone and lonely. I liked the 3rd story, ‘An Independent Organ’, about a plastic surgeon who dies of love, the most.

Elements from three of the stories were used by Ryusuke Hamaguchi to create his film, ‘Drive my car’, ‘Scheherazade’ and ‘Kino’.

🎦🎦🎦 Finding Vivian Maier, a touching documentary about the incredible photographer, who lived her whole life as a lowly nanny in New York and Chicago, while obsessively taking over 150,000 magnificent street photographs which she never bothered to share with anybody, and which were discovered at estate sales only after her death. A lonely, fascinating genius who died completely unrecognized. Best film of the week (again).

��🎦🎦 I adore ‘True Romance’, Tarantino’s first screenplay, I love ‘Pulp Fiction’, and together with ‘Jackie Brown’ I’ve seen these three many times. But I can’t stand the rest of his “oeuvre”. I either couldn’t finish, couldn’t start or disliked what I did finish.

Now I tried Inglourious Basterds again, and I hated just about everything in this awful Nazi-porn idiocy: I hated Brad Pitt’s clown accent, the Hitler and Goebbels cameos, the Jewish revenge fantasy, the look-at-me-I’m-so-clever cinephile allusions, the tasteless holocaust revisionism, the boring violence, the fake irony and inane dialogue. With Mike Myers as a general, and Rod Taylor as Churchill. Fuck Tarantino all together. 1/10.

🎦🎦🎦 On the other hand, I watched my favorite romance Palm Springs again, and loved it just as much as the previous 7-8 times before.

🎦🎦🎦 Jacques Demy’s colorful Donkey Skin, a bizarre Cinderella musical, based on a 1695 French fairy tale. It tells of an absurd king who wants to marry his beautiful daughter, Catherine Deneuve, after the death of her mother, and a donkey that shits gemstones and gold coins. Not as engaging as his previous ‘Umbrellas of Cherbourg’, but apparently it was Demy’s biggest success in France, in spite of his incestuous elements. Mais, oui...

🎦🎦🎦 Godard’s revolutionary New Wave Band of Outsiders, with the delightful three-way cafe dance. Two bumbling and amoral wannabe criminals seduce a naive Anna Karina to help them rob a rich tenant in her aunt’s house. 8/10.

🎦🎦🎦 Steve McQueen at his coolest and most suave role as the gentleman thief of The Thomas Crown Affair. The novel split-screen photography, the fast ‘Windmills of your mind’ version and the outdated sexual dynamics were simply distracting. But as a glamorous, fast-moving heist movie, it’s still a classic. Edited by Hal Ashby.

I’ve never seen any Star Wars movies in my life, except for the famous 2-minute video clip ‘Star Wars Kid’ from 2003. But I remember everything about this Internet’s first huge viral phenomena, because that was the year I started blogging (which I continued to this day).

Star Wars Kid: The Rise of the Digital Shadows is an interesting, new Canadian documentary about the 14-year-old boy who recorded the clip, and how he survived the cruel harassments that followed him, after a schoolmate had made it public without his knowledge. It tackles questions of consent, online privacy, cyber-bullying and the consequences of digital behaviors.

I was introduced to it, both times, by Andy ‘Waxy’ Baio, one of my early blogging influencers (and to this day, one of the last blogs that I still read).

Random pick: A British romantic comedy, About Time, about a young guy who can time-travel to moments in his past and improve his love life, a-la Groundhog’s Phil Connors. First film for me by Richard Curtis, who directed ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral', ‘Notting Hill’, ‘Bridget Jones's Diary’, Etc. With In The Loop’s ‘Simon Foster’ and Margot Robbie. 2/10.

Déjà Vu, another Tony Scott / Denzel Washington action vehicle from the mid-00′s, i.e. Peak-Denzel. It was OK until they tacked on a stupid Schrödinger wormhole subplot of some new government quantum technology used to prevent a Timothy McVeigh-type terrorist plot in New Orleans right before Katrina. 99% of all “Time Windows” stories are so idiotic, and the “scientific” explanations on film are so cringey..

Kait Reacts To The AE 12/?

Hi! These reactions are written out every time a Chatroom opens and it’s done over the course of the day. So, you’re watching me react in real time as it is for me. So, Spoilers AHOY. I have never not been happier to hear Dangerously Hacked Bepop. I can tell you that but it’s more bittersweet than anything because I know that Saeyoung isn’t at all okay with what’s happening no matter what he’s saying to me. I know that he doesn’t want to lose Saeran, even if Saeran was willing to throw himself out on the line and die not only for Saeyoung, but for me as well. And, the others, all for the sake of ensuring that peace could come. I don’t know what to think but I know that I love Saeyoung, very dearly. Even as he’s hurting, he knows that I am hurting as well. We share that pain.

He still tries to comfort me instead of the other way around. That’s what he does, though. He always dodges and tries to avoid what happens. I know that because we’ve been through this song and dance in another timeline four years ago back when this journey first started for me. It’s weird to be here, specifically, knowing how much this game has been here for me since my life...

Mystic Messenger means a lot to me.

It was there for me when my life changed forever and I will never forget that fact, even when the game is gone and I can no longer access the game anymore. It will always be inside of my heart and I will never forget it. I know that in my heart as much as I know that they are in mine.

Anyways, Saeyoung is doing what he can right now. Hacking away and fighting all he can. I admire that.. Thank you, Saeyoung, you don’t know how much you are loved and appreciated.

Either way, we jump to the visual novel right after this and Saeyoung has done it, my God, he’s done it. He broke down everything that he could, and now they are in a frenzy. Nobody can get in touch with agents. Nobody can get in touch with a good portion of their funds, etc. They are utterly down. They don’t have the power to fix any of this as they freak out, and that’s when they get the news that Saeyoung got away. Everyone can put two and two together with that, you know what, the Boss isn’t getting his fucking money if Saeyoung is trying to break them down.

So, like hell is he gonna send anyone out with Saejoong. If they make their hand here, they could be destroyed. He knows that. He’s evil, but he’s not stupid, I’ll give him that. He tells Saejoong that he’s gonna have to do it on his own now, just as we suspected and planned that he would from the start of the mission as it started to play out. This man is pissed.

He’s going to do something stupid, and I’m going to do something really stupid if he comes near Saeran. I won’t hesitate, bitch. I don’t know. There’s so many big bads right now that it’s hard to gauge what’s going to happen in the end. All I do want to know... All I know is that we’re going for the happy ending. We can do that but I don’t know what means.

I hope it’s like Four Seasons.

I hope it’s our return of happiness.

We cut back to Saeyoung and Vanderwood who are working their asses off right now. It turns out that he just manipulated everything to make it look down but it’s not going to last forever. He knows that. Saeyoung hasn’t given up, he actually wants to make it so that Saeran can be saved. He wants to scramble the agents in the midst of this work against the agency. He wants to destroy them, and I can feel that. He wants to use a diversion with a wildfire report to scatter them, and I will admit that’s pretty smart.

But, it is Saeyoung we’re talking about, you know? I never lose faith in him. It’d be stupid to not trust him when he puts his everything behind it. So, while I am going to do what I have to do, I know that he will do whatever it takes to do what he has to do. We’re in this together, even if we don’t know that..Vanderwood is the one to warn Saeyoung not to do anything stupid right now when they’re on the goal here.

Saeyoung will not hesitate.

Saeran will not die.

That’s not how he wants this story to end.

And if I have my way, I’ll make sure that it’s a happy ending. Jaehee doesn’t tell him. They don’t want to tell him everything, not yet. Even after I told Jumin about what happened with Rika. He knows that we need to sort this out later... we just have to be on guard and keep fighting as hard as we can.

Oh, and catch these hands, Saejoong. I’m going to wreck your fucking shit if you try something. I’m so done with selfish and horrible people. You better not bring a gun or try anything. I swear to God. I have a sinking feeling about what you are going to do.

I have have a sinking feeling about Rika and V.

At the end of the day, I decided myself that while I don’t forgive V or Rika, and I likely never will in this reality... I will give V one more chance. It’s not about me forgiving me. I don’t. I don’t trust him either. I am giving him one more chance to prove himself to me. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no going to let him into our life if I have a say. I don’t know if Saeran is going to let that happen either, at this point, both Rika and V have to face punishment for what they did. I hope they accept it and take their punishment. If they want to get better, the two of them need to say that they’re wrong.

They need to take their guilt and be honest.

They need to acknowledge the past and accept their judgement.

Only then, and only then, will they have any right to finding who they are and what their lives mean. I wish that the two of them are able to get better with their health. I wish no bad health on anyone. I don’t want that for them. But, I want them to remember what they did and know that they hurt people. I want them to admit it. I don’t want to hear I’m sorry. I want to see you prove it. I want you to show me how much you actually care.

Prove to me that you don’t want Saeran to die.

You were both willing to let he and Saeyoung burn. I have no reason to trust you after what happened, after what you did to Saeran by chaining him up and letting him relive that trauma again, after what you did to Saeyoung by drugging him and making him beg like a dog on his knees while you ignored his body, after what you did to them... everything.

All of it.

I don’t trust you.

I’m not in a place to forgive, Saeran did, but I don’t know if I’ll ever have that ability nor will I feel bad if I never do. Saeran will respect that. It’s my choice, and this is all about choice. I respect his.. It helped him to forgive him, and I saw that with my own eyes. I saw the weight leave his chest. I saw him breathe and finally be free. I saw him grow and change and become a better man every single day.

My trust lies in Saeran.

In the RFA.

In myself.

It doesn’t lay in you. It doesn’t lay in Rika. I’m only giving you one single chance right now because I know, even though you both fucked up beyond repair, what I saw showed me that you really don’t want him to die. So, on that faith, on the idea that you don’t want Saeran to die, that is the only reason why I am following you right now.

Do not make me regret giving you one more chance, Jihyun Kim.

And, this choice was the right choice.

I’m... I’m feeling a lot. I’m not ready for this to end but it’s going. The end is always coming but it’s not the end of our story. It may be the end of the route, but it’s not the end of the life that Saeran has chosen for him and it will not be the end of my love for him.

The Unforgettable Roots of Jazz Music: South Africa 🇿🇦

A tap from our foot, the base of our heels feeling the rough earth, hot heat on our skin. In the air is undeniable, unmistakably joyful music, the type where punks and corporates can dance and start a conversation whilst sipping coffee and clapping their sweaty hands. The beautiful culture warming our veins, the African sunset is just over Table mountain and it’s glorious. We don’t really talk about jazz anymore but when we do, the talk goes back to America, back to where it started from the staple of blues and oppression. Rightfully so, it’s a topic widely discussed between muso’s and enthusiasts that we acknowledge where it all began but thus, we forget about the other roots, the warm roots of South African jazz music.

Not only was the genre popular in the States but it exploded in South Africa. Apartheid was ruling and ruining lives but somehow, black music was stronger than ever. Through unity and oppression, through loss and pain, African jazz became the beauty of the nation. Jazz musicians met up and performed in local nightclubs, bars and venues, imitating popular music, using different percussive sounds and unique, unforgettable melodies. There were smiles in such a disruptive time.

Bepop Jazz whistled its way into South Africa by the Jazz Epistles, bringing United States Bepop Jazz to the nation. Trombones, trumpets, rhythmic drumming patterns similar to its origin except made into their own. The pioneers brought this genre into Cape Town, during apartheid, starting a revolutionary change in jazz music, popularising a genre that’s so widely appreciated, even today in our modernised music approach. So can we say that jazz music’s origins can be rooted to South Africa?

Jazz music took a turn in my country, when the Sharpeville massacre occurred, where politicians wanted to hide the murder of many people, leaving jazz clubs to close, musicians out of work. They fled around the world to keep jazz alive and to bring African Jazz worldwide, where it’s still known. The genre was and is never forgotten thanks to our musicians spreading the word, playing the beauty of African music worldwide, inspiring listeners about their stories even just through a flute solo.

Step onto the warm ground, the orange dirt and seek the pink skies above you, the Marula tree besides you, the hot air hugging you, mahewu beer in one hand and an mbira in the other. Listen to African Jazz with a different point of view, let it take you back home, back to where it started, back to a place you’ll never forget. Ngiyanemukela.

Wow! Yes!!! Thank you for these! Well technically I didn’t watch either until way after they first aired in the US. Cowboy Bebop I don’t remember much, but I have tons of feels for TRIGUN!!!

don’t watch period| drop if not interested within 2-3 episodes| give it a go, could be your thing| 5 star recommendation

fav characters: So much love for Vash! Such a sweetie and did not deserve to suffer the way he did! T_T I really liked Meryl, Milly and Wolfwood too!! And Legato was pretty cool, though I forget if he was actually a villain…>_>

least fav characters: KNIVES!!!! Oh my word! Don’t get me started on that child!!! And…I can’t remember names but, basically any of the baddies who forced Vash into hurting people or making him crack and get upset.

fav relationship: Vash and Wolfwood omg!! Even though it was kinda in the background, I was excited over Milly and Wolfwood! But I really liked Vash and Marianne!! Probably Vash and Meryl too, since their bickering made me laugh a lot! Oh…and that whole thing between the boys and Rem. I cried so much…!!!

fav moment: I have a lot, just hard to remember them all. Most of them are the silly things Vash would do in battle to distract or fool people into thinking he was a moron only to turn around and be super epic wearing those gold shades!! When he said his full name! Dancing around with his headphones and dodging bullets like it’s nothing, or that time when he sang a super creepy song in a tunnel to scare the bad guys! But Vash vs Legato and then Vash vs Knives…oh that broke me.

headcanons/theories: It’s been so long, I don’t think I have anything for this.

unpopular opinion: Um…not sure.

how’d you find it: My sister was more proficient at finding anime and then when we finally got access to Toonami on TV, that was the first time I ever saw the Humanoid Typhoon. I remember mostly the first 4-5 episodes clearly, the rest gets kinda fuzzy except for the dramatic ending.

random thoughts: I probably was drawn to Vash because at around the same time I was getting into Rurouni Kenshin. I really started to notice how similar the two men were, in their efforts to not hurt people despite their skills with gun and sword, respectively. The whole pacifist viewpoint that Vash had, and wanting to help people, being willing to get himself hurt for the sake of others, and of course the regret of his past mistakes, really resonated with me. plus he was just SO COOL in those scenes where he’d get serious. The whole show, though a bit on the rough side for me, has a good moral lesson. I really should re-watch it again!

Last few days have been insane. On Friday I did mdma with Noor in her car outside of a bar in the city. We began rolling while dancing in the bar, then we drove to a club and Noor made the mistake of doing it in plain view of a security guard. They called the cops and they arrived while I began pinging, so that was fucking just bad timing. I just kept saying that I’d only been drinking, just repeating that statement until they left me alone. Noor was arrested because like multiple people witnessed her doing lines while I was just staring off into the distance. I literally was trying to get to know the cops, like I was genuinely interested in them and their lives, The mdma took over and left me with the inhibitions of a fucking care bear. They let me go since no one actually saw me do mdma and they had no evidence against me beside my dilated af pupils. I also managed to be really polite and agreeable throughout the whole thing, even though I was having such a fucking cosmic moment. They called my parents for me and we went to the station to wait for them to pick me up. I literally had the deepest most emotional conversation with the receptionist who was so sweet and lovey to me like genuinely love her so much she was an actual angel from heaven so sweet and kind. Anyway I was just fucking rolling and I guess I was chewing my lips out for the past few hours because they swelled tf up, so I had just a baboons ass on my face for 48 hours. The past few days the come down has been really weird I’ve basically just been having sexual fantasies and delusions of the drug dealer we got the mdma from since he looked like the kindof guy my thirteen year old self would win a waterpolo tournament over. Like blue eyes, short hair , skinny. Like mark rent from train spotting but younger. I’m such a sucker for dudes that look criminally insane. So yeah hope my obsessive sex fantasies of him come to pass fucking soon. Oh and Noor basically hates me because I called her mum to come get her but I told her mum she just parked on the wrong side of the road not that she was like doing lines on k road. Anyway peace and love LMAO

Anyways I am in love with Connor and I will literally go cow boy bepop on his private school looking ass like... I’ma be sporting a lasso if he as so much as posts another pic of junk on his Snapchat story. I’m literally praying he stays single until I get my nose job like it’s so mean because he’s probably going to be so lonely and think there’s something genuinely wrong with him outside of the drug dealer jig but honestly... can’t wait to fuck him while on ecstasy like I will go Yonkers like I will not hesitate to make him uncomfortable with my pussy. But anyway I can’t believe I just randomly invited an Indonesian dude to my house to get fucked up on edibles. Like what a fucking boss move though, I really invented impulsiveness that day, like walking to my house in this heat while coming down from molly while discussing religion with a nicotine addicted teenager... normal serotonin levels brain T could never. Anyway can’t believe I’ve been coming down off molly while negotiating with the union. I feel like I’m lost at sea, my psyche is just adrift, catch it bumping into sting rays on purpose for a high.

Anime Reccs from ur BOY!

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Great plot, great characters, ur probably gonna cry. Minimal fanservice, fixes a lot of the issues the original anime had. Also the art holy shit the fightscenes in this are some of the best. Its on Hulu, Funimation and Netflix (i think)

Princess Tutu

The art is cute, some jokes get a bit repetitive, the plot is actually pretty good and BALLERINA DANCE BATTLES HOLY SHIT YAAAAS. If you’re into magical girl stuff this is a good one to watch. Avalible on Hulu and Funimation

Wolfs Rain

I’m pretty goddamned biased on this one as I’ll watch almost anything with wolves in it. The plot makes no sense but the art is beautiful at times and ur gunna fuckin cry also its gay. Sadly this one is only legally available on Funimation.

I’m only 5 episodes in but this anime is gaaaaaaaaay. Do you like cute fox girls? Do you like fox girls who work at an inn? Do you like gay fox girls who work at an inn and get into shennanigans?! Well this is your anime. It’s not very serious but its cute for what it is (and holy shit its gay). Its only 12 episodes and on crunchyroll.

Wandering Son

-uncontrollable sobbing-

This is one of the best depictions of being trans/gender queer in anime (granted it still has its problematic moments) but they handle the subject matter pretty well. It really captures that akward questioning a lot of us have. Its also adorable and heart wrenching and jus go watch it ok? Its on Crunchyroll.

Sailor Moon

It’s fucking Sailor Moon the GOAT, The DBZ of Mahou Shoujo, one of the most influencial anime ever how have you NOT seen it?! All 5 seasons are on Hulu and probably funimation or if you have money you can get the boxset and consume all of it.

Cowboy Bepop

Another GOAT, great starter anime, great soundtrack, the plot is eposidic, the world is one of the most diverse (aside from Mitchiko & Hatchin another great anime) and it’s chock full of movie refrences. Also Shinchiro Watanabe is the GOAT YAAAAS GO WATCH BEBOP. Its on hulu (the dub of course watch the dub best dub of all time).

Mob Psycho 100

Holy shit I’ve never seen animation like this before the colors, the movement aaaaah its fukkin beautiful! Mob is truely the best boy and jus wants to improve himself and become a better person and we can all learn from that. Made by the guy who wrote OnePunchMan so this is quality AND FUCK THE CRUNCHYROLL AWARDS MOB PSYCHO WAS ROBBED AT LEAST IT DIDNT REUSE FUKKIN ANIMATION FUKKIN YURI ON ICE FUJOSHI AASRRRFFFGVSH. It’s avalible on Crunchyroll

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

Just fucking watch it....jus i have no words this is a series best experinced for yourself. Its on Hulu and Crunchyroll and the dub is airing on Toonami

Little Witch Academia

Thisis basically the cutest anime ever. It’s Harry Potter done RIGHT with cute girls. Akko the protag can get a bit annoying but the other characters help. (Succy is best girl btw). Its animated by Studio Trigger so ur eyes are in for a treat as well and it’s FINALLY availble on Netflix.

Boku No Hero Academia

If you’re not watching this already...idk wat to tell you. Its a superhero anime but its so goooood, don’t let the fandom overwhelm you just watch it. Bakugo who is like Sauske drenched in gasoline and his edginess turned up to 11 is horrible and can b a turn off since Deku is so sweet and hardworking and doesn’t deserve the cruelty thrown his way (seriously Bakugo is trash idc abt the manga he’s fukkin TRAAAASH) but aside from shitlordmcboomboom everyone else is great. Especially All Might. There is some fanservice which is uugefffgh but the plot is good and the animation is on point alot of the time. It’s on Hulu, Crunchyroll and I think Netflix and Funimation.

i know tmnt is a shitshow sometimes but here’s my favorite moments from the show for no reason: - “WE’RE THE TURTLES OF JUSTICE” - the sub joke - “turtle turtle jerk turtle jerk turtle” - they all had a dance party after saving the world - april slapping leo because he had a crush on karai - donnie specifically made a recording device that would fit a cockroach - the turtles playing dodgeball with the Kraang communication orb - apparently none of the turtles can cook except Mikey which is really funny - Casey’s entire introduction in the show - Irma roasting Casey every time they had a scene together - the fact that Splinter just….had a cheese phone.
