Lakes of beauty

Lake Louise

A stop at Lake Louise was recommended to me by my fellow co-worker Christian. He said: “Go early” and right he was. We arrived to the parking lot of the Fairmont Hotel in the middle of the night to make sure we just had to take a short stroll to the center of action the next morning.

We got up at around 5:30 AM to walk the few steps down to the lake. The sunrise was about to lift off. Perfect timing for some long exposures of one of the more photographed spot in Banff National Park. Right after the sun finally lifted the people started to rush in and take pictures with selfie sticks in front of the lake. Time for us to leave after experiencing the place in almost silent conditions.

Lake Moraine

A few minutes later we cruised the parking lot of Lake Moraine. This place was so crowded already that it took a total of 4 or 5 rounds around the parking lot to finally find a car that was about to leave. Another few minutes later the car finally left and we were able to fill the spot. Lake Moraine was no less impressive, but the light had already changed so the reflections were no more as powerful as on Lake Louise. I guess the best would be to stay around in this area to dedicate mornings to each of those miracles of nature.

Ah, I thought people already forgot about her, honestly. I’m going to keep this short and sweet: nothing is inherently good or bad. Social media is what you make of it. Social media is the one way you can reach millions with a positive message. You can’t fight the system if you aren’t part of the system, you have to fight the system from within. It’s a shame someone with such a good message is falling into oblivion when she could’ve changed many lives, but there’ll be more like her. Also I quickly browsed her blog, and it seems to me as though it’s quite egocentric, which is pretty ironic ;) xx

Traffic police can be fun when you’re in the right country

Pyongyang, DPRK

Traffic is often controlled by police members regulating the flow onto crossroads and junctions despite traffic lights being in place as well. The traffic police members as many other state employees wear gorgeous uniforms and even pop out cool sunglasses once the sun shows out. Many of them appear to be female. A fact that drew a lot of attention in the past.

Due to the nature of my fixed lens camera the only way to zoom is by using my feet. On one occasion the traffic lady saw the van with the governmental tourism agency emblem on the door before we actually turned right. When I was on a good height to shoot out of the open window she gave me a broad smile. People are humans after all. The system in which they live doesn’t change the fact a smile will be reflected almost everywhere in the world.

I love seeing myself in photos. Does that make me egotistical or self-centered? Because when I look at this photo, I'm taken back to a beautiful day and a place in my mind that I can return to whenever I choose. I am real and candid even when I am posing. And I think you're looking at this photo right now because you can feel that energy as well. How does this photo inspire you? How do colors and words and people inspire you? Beauty is not something we can physically capture, but I don't think you just look at this photo with your eyes. @plvntstrong captured this image of me and it was this very day when we talked about why photography is such a passion of hers. Photos make you feel. We have such visual minds that connect with every other sense in and out of our bodies. This photo is simply a reflection of your beautiful mind.. Metro of Pyongyang

The deep underground

The metro of Pyongyang lies deep beyond the surface. At 100 meters depth the escalators running down are very steep and take their time to deliver their passengers to the underground stations. The stations themselves (I was able to visit 3 of them in total) are beautiful displays of colorful propaganda and depictions. There are 2 lines in total that have one intersection. Thus the system of the capital feels very intimate and approachable to it’s counterparts in other capitals like Seoul, New York or Beijing.

Every platform has a set of two uniformed employees that take care of the passenger loading and unloading and make sure the operation runs fluently. The trains are material from Germany. The layout of the cars is well known if you have been riding a Berlin U-Bahn train once before. Interesting fact is that despite the fact you never and nowhere see any sign of graffiti or paroles in Pyongyang the windows of the cars still show the original scratch marks from Germany of vandals itching their tags into the windows.

No train car would be complete without the depictions of the President Kim Il-Sung or the General Kim Jong-Il. The advertising frames in the car sit abandoned and empty. What a waste of precious space for some truly socialist paroles.

Modern times

The passengers in the trains are not that far away from the average metropolitan subway user. With the rise of the DPRK unique Arirang smartphone digital reading and games have arrived to a broad mass. The people use the time between stops to read some publication or play simple games to kill time. The subway stations have more functions than initially recognized. In the middle of each station stands a display of the latest Rodong Sinmun newspaper issue. People gather around this distribution spot for latest gossip and state news.

Some of the stations have shops at their entrance or exits. These shops evenly colorful to the stations themselves hold the opportunity to buy products of the daily live as well as presents and toys for kids.
