top 10 (ish) ridiculous or annoying FAQs:
(click at your own discretion)
1) "kids today rely on others to do everything"
ah yes, damn those participation trophies! if it wasn't for them my hands wouldn't be fucked, and I wouldn't need people to write for me. but seriously, stop reading boomer comics, and go outside to meet some actual young people.
2) "sus that a non-american says mom"
yeah, because it's clearly the superior version, and I'm not too patriotic to concede a defeat.
3) "sweaty, the victims of abuse by catholics are real people, stop appropriating their pain just because you want to hate catholics; plus teachers abuse people just as often anyway"
so firstly, I don't hate anybody. and secondly, regarding the fact that victims really do exist, [insert "of course I know him, he's me" meme here]; although I don't often talk much about the abuse I went through or what my religious beliefs are. but, more importantly, statements like "survivors are people" can be phrased like "some people are survivors", and when you're unable to act according to the latter (like when you don't even consider that somebody might be one) then you display a failure to recognise the former - you're projecting; a survivor can't be appropriating their own pain, but you can be appropriating it to silence one. and thirdly, teachers do abuse - the problem isn't and has never been purely religion, rather that abuse is often done by somebody in a position of trust, power, and familiarity; and that the lack of a global minimum enables totally legal abuse on top of the illegal stuff. people with access and respect have more opportunity to abuse than those without, and that goes for teachers too. but, once again, you can be appropriating the pain of survivors to deflect and silence people. please remember this before you say that shit.
4) "get help/therapy"
way ahead of you - years ahead of you. but it's not magic - people who say this often act as if you'll start behaving differently overnight. not only are some things simply beyond the ability of talking therapy to completely rectify, it also takes time and has to be selective. you've got to pick your priorities, and that's definitely not whatever ship or joke you're mad at me about today. therapy is a slow, arduous process that can't guarantee results - it isn't "anti-recovery" to recognise that, it's honesty. while I've been in therapy for a long time, it is not necessarily going to change whatever you don't like about me - whether that's because it can't, because my focus now is on more important or urgent things, or because I don't want to change that.
5a) "tell your family you ship incest, see how that goes; normal people find it disgusting"
actually, some know, and they're fine with it. in fact, one prefers sibling pairings in fiction to all other dynamics because, to paraphrase, "it's a deeper level of messed up co-dependence". so unfortunately for you, my remaining family (by which I mean those not dead or cut out of my life after abuse and so forth) actually are able to distinguish between fiction and reality. plus, my reasoning for caring if they find it gross or not pertains only to recommending books and such - their opinions do not dictate my tastes.
5b) "don't sexualise/appropriate incestuous abuse" and "I bet you enjoyed being raped" and other attempts to upset me over 5a
firstly, as I've already said here, survivors can't be appropriating ourselves. in addition, you're not owed people's history or trauma - it's not okay to require people's personal information, or else you'll send anon hate and accusations of appropriation. secondly, I'm not sexualising our abuse (not just because I write horror, and so a lot of my writing is intended to be creepy, not sexy); these stories aren't about us, they're not us at all. entire dynamics/people (fictional or otherwise) aren't all going to be applicable to us or identical to us, just because they have something in common with us; they're not us and they're not accountable to us. thirdly, the fact that people send this stuff (attempting to trigger people's trauma over ships) is so much more worrying to me than somebody making our communal imaginary friends kiss. you're trying to hurt people. and finally, to the "I bet you enjoyed it" crowd (if you're at all serious): do you think you'd enjoy being in a real zombie apocalypse, alone, afraid, and really at risk of being eaten alive? a fictional scenario does not feel remotely the same as a real one. this isn't rocket science - things that look like you aren't you; fiction isn't reality; don't send anon hate. (edit: comparable "just leave me alone, I'm not hurting anyone" sentiments for yandere stuff, and anything else you decide I'm naughty for.)
6) "you'll be sent off to do manual labour once your communist revolution happens"
while I don't know why people think that I'm a communist, a dictatorial regime probably isn't going to want me to do manual labour. they're more likely to just shoot me; I'm useless and a liability. call me crazy, but something tells me that "ah yes, we shall give ze deranged cripple ze power tools" isn't the communist position.
7a) "they/them can't be singular pronouns"
yes they can, and they're used as such in both shakespeare and the bible. but you don't have to say this - I'm also okay with he/him, so you could've just used those and chilled out. also, do I look like somebody who views the rules of grammar as fully immutable and imperative?
7b) "enbies/aros/pan/etc aren't valid"
do you really think that you're going to change any hearts or minds by putting that in my ask box or under my funny maymays? chill out, it's not worth the effort - you could be planning a party (in minecraft) and having fun instead. it isn't worth my time to rant at everybody who's saying something isn't valid, updating how I'm explaining it as my opinions grow and general discourse around it evolves; I'm just who I am, somebody else is who they are - why bicker in presumptuous ways about if that's enough? it ultimately is valid, in my opinion, but that isn't an invitation to keep demanding that I debate. (edit: old posts of mine probably don't phrase things incredibly, on this or anything... I tried.)
8) "what are your politics?"
my politics are informed first and foremost by the knowledge that I'm not cut out to be some kind of leader - I don't want to be the guy who tells everyone else what to do, I just offer what seem to me like valid criticisms of how we are doing things now, and general pointers on the values and ethics that I would prefer to move towards. things like individual freedom, taking the most pacifist route where possible, trying not to give excessive power to small groups of people (governments or corporations), helping those in need even when they're not palatable, and letting me suck loads of dicks. but please refrain from decreeing me something - there's not enough information in what I said, so you'll just be filling in the blanks with assumptions. (edit: workplace democracy seems cool to me; benefits are good; fair fines and taxes; and the "sperm makes you loopy" saga: 1, 2, 3, and 4.)
9) "you're a narcissist"
no, I don't meet the diagnostic criteria. joking on the internet that you're hot doesn't make a person a narcissist. the fact that I've chosen to keep my actual self-esteem issues to myself is not proof that they don't exist - you're just not entitled to that information about me. but it's also not narcissism to really like how you look. (edit: don't throw labels around carelessly too.)
10a) "kin list?"
the fabric of the universe, a zombie, dionysus, maned wolf/arctic fox hybrid, a comedian, big gay, big rock, ambiguously partial insincerity. (edit: kin list may or may not be incomplete.)
10b) "kin isn't valid/that's just being insane"
haven't we established that I'm deranged, and that sending stuff like this on anon is simply a waste of your precious time? besides, I do not care if it's invalid or insane - it's fun, I'm happy. (edit: see 7b for my opinion on sending me yet another ask with "that's invalid" in it; I'm not in the mood to discuss the nature of validity.)
bonus: "it gets better" and "trigger list?"
as I've said before, things just don't always get better for everyone - sometimes things can't be cured or even treated, sometimes they kill you; in some cases it could get better if not for a blockade or lack of time. the world is messy. it needs to be more normalised to reassure or comfort people without relying on saying that their issue will get better or be cured. it does suck to be this ill, but it also sucks to be made out to be a lazy pessimist, just because I have the audacity to not play along. and as for the trigger list, I don't like providing people with an easily accessed list of ways to hurt my feelings or harm me - upsetting me is supposed to be challenging, and thus rewarding. if you want a cheat sheet then you're out of luck, I'm afraid.
bonus #2: "FAQ stands for frequently asked questions, it doesn't need that s at the end!"
yeah, I know, I just enjoy chaos and disarray.
bonus #3 (edit): "what are your disabilities and how exactly are they incurable and/or deadly?"
again, I don't tell the internet everything about me, especially when it poses a risk, especially not as an easily accessible list for you to refer back to whenever you feel inclined to hurt my feelings. that is understandably a sore subject. (edit: that includes physical health issues btw.)
bonus #4 (edit): "so we shouldn't be critical?"
if it wasn't clear from my answer about politics or my post in general, you can have opinions about things, and you can voice that. it's just not realistic to exist at extremes: to think that you alone should dictate what exists in fiction, or to think that people shouldn't be expressing disdain or criticism of any calibur. say how you feel about things, that's fine, but it's also fine if people find that they don't value your input. plus we're all flawed, we can all be hypocritical from time to time, we all get bitchy, and we all make mistakes, or even knowingly fuck things up. that's important to keep in mind, whether we're talking about the one being criticised or the one doing the criticising - poor choices of words, imperfect tone, or contradictory ideas are inevitably going to happen occasionally.
congrats on reaching the end! if you have, at any point, said one of these to me, you owe a hug to your nearest loved one (once it's safe).
edit: might add more links/bonus points in the future when I think of things, but it's late now. (sorry for links where prior notes in the thread have my old url, that may get a tad confusing; also, not all links are my blog or my op, since it is to illustrate points/vibes, not to self-promo.)

a bit of historical / military context for 1917
because it certainly added to my appreciation of the film to understand a little more of the background of a few of the lines :’) ♡
“the last time i was told the germans had gone, it didn’t end well”:
here, schofield is referring to the opening day of the somme on the 1st of july 1916, and, more specifically, the first day of the first battle of thiepval ridge.
in the week prior to the opening day, the british expeditionary force (BEF) let loose an artillery barrage on the german positions of some 1.7 million shells. the commander of the fourth army, general sir henry rawlinson, told his subordinate commanders: “nothing could exist at the conclusion of the bombardment in the area covered by it.” in short, the germans were supposed to be gone. so sure were the generals of utter success, a misguided feeling of complete calm optimism filtered down through the ranks - so much so that the infantry forces were instructed that there need be no hurry in getting across no man’s land and into the enemy trenches: there would be little to no resistance, as the germans and all their artillery and machine gun outposts would have been obliterated, and they could take it at a leisurely pace across the land that was hundreds of yards wide at some points.
of course, within just a few minutes, the opening day turned into a catastrophic disaster. the artillery barrage had hardly touched the german defences and the majority of their troops had been sheltered safe and sound in deep underground bunkers for the entire week. the barbed wire had not been cut by the shelling as the generals had hoped; the land between the british and german lines was torn up by their own artillery and muddy from days of rain; and the germans were not gone. when the british mine at the hawthorn redoubt was blown at 07:20 rather than at 07:28, when the other mines along the front line were due to be detonated to begin the offensive, the germans were given a full ten minutes warning of the british attack and could set up their defences before the infantry had even gone over the top of their trenches.
at 07:30, 2,000 officers blew their whistles all along the 12-mile stretch of front and the 65,000 soldiers of the first wave climbed out into no man’s land all at the same time and began their simultaneous advance in one, long line. when schofield climbed out of his trench, he would have started on the muddy, uphill climb towards the ruins of thiepval village, with tens upon tens of thousands of soldiers on either side of him and the men that he had gone through training with most likely among them - in relative silence at first, as the echoes of the whistles died away, but soon in roaring chaos, screaming confusion, and white-hot fear as the wire was discovered to be uncut, the germans were discovered to be very much alive, and the orderly advance fell into bewildered and terrified disarray. within seconds, it was slaughter. 65,000 soldiers died on that first day alone and over four million would become casualties in the following four months, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history.
all because, despite cheerful promises, prideful boasting, and empathetic assurances to the contrary, the germans were not gone.
“lieutenant leslie has command”:
it really does need saying just what a vast degree of difference there is between a major being in command, as had been the case before leslie was forced to take over, and a lieutenant. the section of the yorks that were holding the front line was most likely a company, around 150 soldiers at full strength. a company was commanded by a major, with a captain as second-in-command, while a lieutenant was the second lowest ranking commissioned officer in the BEF, just above a second lieutenant.
to put into perspective what a lieutenant’s role usually comprised, they were in command of one platoon each - around 50 soldiers - with a sergeant as their second-in-command, corporals in command of each of the three or four sections within the platoons, and lance corporals in command of the fire teams. platoons would have a small headquarters, and command of one was usually a newly commissioned officer’s first posting before they moved on to bigger and better things. it is therefore staggering, and truly upsetting in the context, that a lieutenant was put in a position where he was forced to take over in the place of a major, a full two ranks above him - and even more so that he was clearly left as the highest ranking officer in the company.
no wonder he was so overwhelmed - he was a relatively junior officer, already traumatised by war and most likely by losing all the men he may have been close to only two days ago, who had suddenly been handed the lives and wellbeing of a hundred men and told to care for and lead them. the burden of such sudden responsibility, of not being able to do or be enough for them, would have been too much to cope with for most anyone, and it’s little wonder he turned to alcohol to numb the fear and, perhaps, the insecurity.
“the germans are gone” / “i think they wanted to bury us”:
from february through to the 5th of april 1917 - 1 day before the beginning of the film - the german army initiated operation alberich and retreated back to a newly formed defensive position known as the siegfried position, or the hindenburg line to the BEF. it was built to shorten their stretch of held land by 30 miles and replace the former front line, which had been increasingly manned by insufficient numbers of physically and psychologically drained soldiers and which could no longer be held: their fighting force on the western front had been depleted and exhausted by the battle of the somme in 1916, the success of their offensives on the eastern front had forced them to stretch their resources across an even larger stretch of land, and the entrance of romania into the war had added even further strain.
by wasting the land between their old trench systems and their new line, they hoped to delay an expected spring offensive by the british and french forces. to achieve this, they completely desolated the landscape, turning it into a bleak and devastated wasteland that would severely try the logistics and resources of the anglo-french advance, and render it unusable, uninhabitable, and often dangerous to even cross: they systematically destroyed bridges, buildings, roads, forests, and wells; booby-trapped buildings and objects that they thought might tempt a british soldier to pick up, such as trophy helmets, souvenirs, and food; and left the remains of barbed wire entanglements, deep shell holes and old trenches full of water, and unexploded artillery shells in the former battlefields.
“the sap trench was blown to hell weeks ago”:
sap trenches were temporary, shallow tunnels dug under no man’s land and towards enemy lines so close to the surface that when an offensive was launched, the attackers could collapse the tunnel roof, advance troops into a trench that was now far closer to the defenders than the latter were anticipating and way beyond the front line that now lay behind them, and go over the top with a much shorter distance to cover before they reached the enemy trenches.
had they been better and more extensively used during the battle of the somme, they might have made all the difference to the soldiers who had to advance across no man’s land in full view of the germans watching from up above on the high ground.
“at least wear your medal”:
it’s possible schofield was awarded a medal for gallantry at the somme - perhaps for having reached the village of thiepval itself, as a few advancing BEF troops were seen to have done (and which then ultimately resulted in even more carnage, as the no doubt terrified and bewildered soldiers entering the village and finding themselves alone and without the rest of their battalion inadvertently prompted the british artillery to direct fire away from the german defences in the village, thus leaving the troops still trapped down below open to even worse targeted machine gun fire) when most scarcely made it out of the trenches - but it’s perhaps more likely that he was simply awarded a medal for having participated in the battle.
bonus bit, because it breaks my heart:
it’s entirely possible that, with the air of optimism in the BEF prior to the first day of the somme, schofield, perhaps a fairly fresh recruit, was daring to feel hopeful. that he was smiling and laughing and believing that maybe it would actually work - maybe it would all be okay. and that, afterwards, he was left with his spirit destroyed. if schofield was a different person before the war - if he was happier, if he smiled more, if he softly but passionately loved books and poetry and flowers - then thiepval took it all away and turned him into the quiet, hollow-eyed man we know.
(and, to just copy-paste my own tags on an earlier post about the fact that he’s seemingly stagnated at lance corporal after so many months because it somewhat ties in:
have they tried to promote scho and he said no? has he just sunk into his silence and become almost invisible and forgotten? has he done something wrong and they won't promote him because of it? bad behaviour? did he go mad after thiepval and do that thing some soldiers in the trenches did where they just try to go over the top and get themselves killed? and they've been watching him distrustfully ever since in case he has another outburst? did he used to be a higher rank and they demoted him because of shellshock or a lapse in ability because he just went silent after his trauma? did he ask to be demoted? has he really just stagnated at lance corporal? there's so much DEPTH there.
like i feel like someone can only be that... quiet and Given Up and distant if they’ve absolutely lost it at one point and then just accepted that there’s nothing they can do and crumpled into learned helplessness by the time we meet them. that’s my headcanon now: he lost it and was just unhinged and raging and screaming against the injustice of all his friends dying, and he was given an official warning and maybe demoted and eventually just faded into a silent nothing when he realised no one cared and no one would do anything and nothing would change. and now he’s been left with that incredible capacity for leadership, with all those skills, with all that caring, and nowhere for it to go)

Its not that Far From Home doesn’t fit ‘my specific vision of the character’.
Because I can say that of almost every piece of Spider-Man adapted media.
You can do Spider-Man in different ways, but it’s a matter of degrees.
I didn’t make this point but it was bang on the money.
Godzilla fans accept Godzilla 1954, Godzilla 2014 and Godzilla 2016.
They’re very different in more ways than one, visually, in their characterizations, in their abilities and their relationship to humanity.
And yet they all have a similar enough look. They all have radioactive breath. They all are indestructible to conventional military weapons.
And fans have preferences but they also embrace all of them generally speaking.
But fans widespread rejected Godzilla 1998 who looked nothing like any incarnation before or since, didn’t have radioactive breath, was murdered by conventional military weapons even though other aspects of the character did fall in line with other versions.
Because like I said there are degrees of change and Godzilla 1998 went obviously way too far.
Let’s now look at some incarnations of Spider-Man.
Even though they might have some harsh words to say of other aspects of these versions pretty much every Spider-Man fan far and wide agrees that:
Spider-Man the Animated Series
The Spectacular Spider-Man Animated Series
Spider-Man 2000 the video game
Spider-Man PS4
Captured the essence of the character. Yet they were different.
One is about a college man. One is about a high schooler. One is about a married adult. One is about a young adult recently graduated.
One has a love triangle with MJ and Felicia Hardy. One has a love polygon with Gwen, MJ, Felicia, Betty and Liz. One is married to MJ butt has a close friendship with Felicia. One is seriously dating MJ but has a troubled history with his ex-Felicia.
One has extremely limited tech to work with. One has no tech to work with. One has practically no tech to work with. One has ooodles of tech to work with.
Different...and yet in the spirit the same.
For many people they’d lump in the Raimi and Webb movies in there too, the latter of whom I’ve somewhat softened my position on in light of the MCU.
None of these entirely  fit MY personal vision for the character, but I can still see most of them get more right than they get wrong.
And that is where the MCU comes in.
The MCU is Spider-Man’s Godzilla 1998 except his look and abilities are correct and literally everything else is wrong.
Even the derided Spider-Man Unlimited kept his personality vaguely in character, even if it was in a stupid context.
When you can look at the original comics and then most other versions of the character, including the ones widely stated to be on the mark, and spot little commonality with Homecoming and Far From Home obviously something has gone wrong, it’s practically measurable.
This notion of ‘Spider-Man can be anything’ and ‘other people have their vision for the character’ is the participation trophy of critical analysis. Everyone is right so nobody is wrong.
Personal visions be damned, there is clearly a ball park you can land in wherein it is still a version of the character as well as areas outside that ball park where you are just doing a wholesale different character now.

Rory McIlroy needs to get out of his comfort zone to be Woods’ heir
Even if Rory McIlroy never wins a new tournament, he will still go down in history as one of the best golfers ever in Europe has produced.
Only Seve Ballesteros and Sir Nick Faldo from this continent have won more than his four big prizes and neither has won the US Open or the US PGA Championship, McIlroy did it.
He seems happy. He has more than enough money to keep him and his family comfortable for the rest of their lives. Rory McIlroy will go down in history as one of the best golfers ever produced in Europe "

A week ago, the Sunday Times Rich List valued its assets at £ 138 million and seems to be satisfied in his personal life. He's a good guy. People like him. His friends are old friends.
He also has a great year, he also has a great year. Before this weekend I played in eight tournaments in 2019 and I finished in the top 10 in seven of them. He won the Players Championship in March with a masterly display.
He has risen to fourth place in the world ranking behind Dustin Johnson, Justin Rose and Brooks Koepka.
But for everyone who loves golf and honors McIlroy, there is still a nagging feeling that this is not enough.
When he spoke on Friday about how proud he was that he had made the cut at the US PGA Championship on Bethpage Black, 15 shots drifted from runaway leader Koepka, it added that persistent feeling that something was actually
The problem, in part, is that McIlroy is a prisoner of our lofty expectations, born of the achievements of his childhood when he won the US Open, the US PGA Championship (twice) and the Open through age of 25.
The 30-year-old won the players' championship in March with a masterly display. The 30-year-old won the players 'championship in March with a masterly display
The 30-year-old won the players' championship in March with a masterful display
We all became a little dizzy. This boy was the heir to Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, we thought. He may still be, but after his second win in the US PGA Championship in 2014, the big wins have dried up.
It has now been almost five years since he won one of the big ones. In the prime of their lives, neither Woods nor Nicklaus have endured a drought that lasted even half as long.
Perhaps this is a Euro-centric view, but it is hard to shake the feeling that when McIlroy plays his best, he is no equal No one has the gifts he has. But in the last five years I have not been able to produce when it matters the most.
Others, especially Koepka, have learned the skill of rising up to the greatest occasions. McIlroy doesn't have that. In the time since McIlroy last won a big one, Koepka has won three and seems to be adding a fourth on Sunday. The time goes by beyond McIlroy.
It has contributed to a nagging feeling of drift. Nothing is radically wrong. McIlroy is still one of the best golfers in the world. He is always in conversation when people talk about potential big winners.
He is always one of the bookmakers' favorites. Nor can anyone blame a person who has won as much as he has for lack of steel. Yet he fails. Due to small margins but still falling short.
& # 39; Winning a major is not easy & # 39 ;, Nicklaus said with a hint of impatience when I asked him about McIlroy's drought last month. Of course he is right. It is one of the most difficult tasks in sports.
But in the last five years, Koepka and Jordan Spieth have both found it harder than McIlroy. In the big race of the new generation they bring him in.
<img id = "i-8b8e6ccd5fbb034" src = "https://dailym.ai/2JLjIhy 21 / 13665584-7045127-image-a-13_1558210254401.jpg "height =" 486 "width =" 634 "alt =" Jack Nicklaus insisted that & # 39; winning a major was not easy & # 39; when I asked to McIlroy & # 39; s drought "Jack Nicklaus insisted that & # 39; winning a major is not easy & # 39; and that is not the way to go. "
Jack Nicklaus insisted that & # 39; winning a major is not easy & # 39; when I asked him about McIlroy & # 39; s drought
McIlroy did not challenge Augusta last month and he blew up a chance to compete for the USPGA this weekend with two mediocre opening rounds.
On Friday, I dropped five shots in his first three holes. in the now familiar position of sticking to straws, saying that he had won a tournament of three remaining after 36 holes earlier.
There are missteps of the course that have contributed to that feeling of drift around McIlroy His handling of his decision not to play at the Rio Olympics in 2016 was terrible.
Initially, McIlroy expressed his reluctance to participate in the Zika virus, damaging the Games at a time. that many in the ri j stood to doubt the credibility.
In the end, McIlroy said the truth was that he resented the Olympics to make him choose between playing for Britain or Ireland. I have ridiculed the inclusion of golf in this. He said he would watch the Olympics, but not the wave.
Asked which events I would watch, I made another attempt to belittle the inclusion of golf. & # 39; The stuff that matters, & # 39; he said.
Strange that McIlroy stated last week that he was now excited about playing at the Tokyo Olympics next year. He probably decided that it matters now, although he left that point when he announced that he intended to participate. Cynics have already pointed to the fact that Japan is a huge market for golf.
If he wants to become the heir of Tiger Woods, he must drag himself out of his comfort zone
If he To become the heir to Tiger Woods, he must do it himself. he must drag himself out of his comfort zone
McIlroy & # 39; s Olympic mess represents a man who must be wise. He has surrounded himself with old friends and people with whom he feels comfortable. In many ways, that is in his name. It is a sign of his loyalty.
Only he knows what he needs to get the best out of himself, but there is a marked lack of people in his area to challenge him. There are no independent votes.
McIlroy will win more majors because he is too good not to be anymore, but golf is more wonderful. He turned 30 earlier this month.
Koepka is a year younger than him and attacks his own career with furious taste.
McIlroy is in the prime of his career and yet the big prizes continue to slip away from him. If he is happy with what he has already achieved and is satisfied to enjoy it and enjoy his life, no one can blame him.
If he wants to become Woods and Nicklaus's heir again, he has to drag himself out of his comfort zone.
Nick needs help …] Nick Kyrgios is a tennis player of sublime talent, the kind of player who produces shots that nobody can coach, but alternately in the aftermath of his disqualification of the Italian Open last week, alternately , cursing, hitting his racket and swinging a chair on the court it feels like it has come to a point where he is famous for the wrong reasons.
It is easy to criticize him for being pampered, not trying hard enough, and wasting his ability but that misses the point.
The point is that it is uncomfortable to look at a man who clearly suffers, fighting his demons for thousands in an amphitheater. Instead of fining him and giving him ranking points, he is tennis time trying to help him.
Instead of fining Nick Kyrgios and giving him ranking points, tennis was trying to help him
Chelsea can pay a high price
Chelsea played their friendly match against New England Revolution in Boston last week for the right reasons: they raised a few million pounds for
The fact remains that two transatlantic flights and a match on a difficult surface the end of a long season were the last thing the players of Maurizio Sarri needed for the final of their Europa League against Ass at the end of the month.
If you bend too many players, they will snap. That is exactly what happened with Ruben Loftus-Cheek. A good deed can cost them a trophy.

Season 1 APAC Recap
Girl’s Rugby Clinch APAC Title for a 4-Peat There was little doubt that the SASPX girl’s rugby team was the best team in APAC, but the question going into the conference was whether or not they would succumb to the pressure laden on their shoulders. And succumb they did not when they defeated HKIS in the finals 24-7, on the home field, to win their fourth successive APAC title, which in SAS sports jargon is called a 4-peat. Along with their victory, the team also was given the sportsmanship award that SAS rugby has not earned for many years. The tournament, which first began in a round-robin fashion, saw the team not concede a single point against ISB (57-0), WAB (36-0), HKIS (33-0) and SASPD (28-0). In the semifinals, playing against WAB, they once again exerted their dominance by winning 55-0. The team’s co-captain Haley Young agrees that “the team played exceptionally.” “Throughout the entire season we maintained a strong defense and offense. Our amazing team chemistry and the trust that we have in each other really carried us to the end.” In the finals against HKIS, the girls kept their momentum, and despite the pressure given to them by both themselves and the spectators, they did not underperform. Their unfaltering offensive prowess, with the blistering speed of some of their players, carried through.

“Before the big game, we were all quite nervous yet extremely focused and determined to win,” said Young. “For the seniors, we knew that it was our last game and wanted to win… we knew that if we trusted each other and played to our strengths we would come out on top.”
It also was not just in this tournament did they not drop a match. The entire season they have remained undefeated, which is a first in girl’s rugby history.
With there being six seniors on the team, the mantle will soon be passed onto next year’s members. With their recent APAC performance, Young is confident that next year’s team will bring just as much success to the school.
“All of the first time APAC players did outstanding. They were able to handle the pressure of the tournament very well and really stepped up as players on the field.”

Boy’s Rugby Finishes Third in APAC
The SASPX boy’s rugby team made some substantial, but welcome, changes to their game this season, culminating in a third-place finish in the APAC conference last week. The team played in a round-robin against ISB (15-0), WAB (5-7), HKIS (0-49), and SASPD (33-0). In the semifinals, they suffered a heart-wrenching defeat to WAB, who scored a stoppage-time try to win the match 12-10 and robbed SASPX of a spot in the APAC finals on their home field. The team’s last match against ISB was a hard-earned 12-7 victory.
Perhaps the most significant difference in the team’s lineup this year is the lessened reliance on ‘carry’ players – or strong individual players who the team depended upon to win. Throughout the season and especially during APAC, they focused on cohesion and teamwork, which was encouraged by the nearly all-senior lineup. The team’s shift in their playing dynamic, as Luca Lee, a senior starter on the squad, believes, is what allowed them to improve on last year’s performance – they finished fourth then.
“Many of us have had the privilege of playing side-by-side for the past four years, some of us even five,” said Lee. “One important distinguishing factor of this year’s team compared to previous years compared to the previous years has been the ‘team’ portion of it. We've often relied on the brilliance of single players, but to have created a team in which every person was part of every single one of the twenty-four minute games is quite a feat.”
During their pivotal semifinals match against WAB, the boys lost by one conversion when WAB managed to score in the final thirty-seconds of the game. It was a nail-biting finish. The team’s coach, Doug Andrew, thought that the boys played “perfectly all game, but got very unlucky.” Indeed, it came down to only a handful of referee calls and conversion plays.

Despite the setbacks, the team managed to triumph over ISB in the following round to secure themselves a third-place finish, an improvement over last year’s fourth.
“The team played beautifully this APAC,” said team captain Wesley Chiu. “this year we've achieved something previous years of our rugby team have not been able to achieve and that's not relying on the individual brilliance of players.”
“Everyone in this tournament had a moment someone could be ‘ooohing’ or ‘aahhing’ about,” attests Lee, “but during the games, we'd be able to come together, trust each other, and most importantly play for each other.”
For most of the lineup, it was their last rugby tournament in which they would wear an SAS jersey. The team had to overcome numerous challenges throughout the season and made a final figurative statement at APAC, which is what ultimately made it so memorable for each of them.

Cross-Country Girls Take Home APAC Trophy, Boys Finish as Runner-Ups.
"One of the hills is so steep you have to put your hands out on front of you to crawl up it..."
When inquiring about the APAC course this year before their race, this comment, and similar variations of it, was what greeted the SAS PX Cross Country team. APAC, it seems, was going to be quite the challenge. However, the XC team fearlessly headed to Hong Kong on Wednesday, October 17th to take on the course. The event was held by HKIS, with participating schools being CISS, SASPD, Brent, SFS, AISG, and WAB.
On race day, the event kicked off at 8am with the boys racing first, followed by the girls. The course was definitely a challenge, consisting of 2 steep hills in the first 3k before flattening out for the final 2k. Despite this, co-captain Raj Rana remarked that "As a team, we physically pushed ourselves over the mountains during APAC and mentally hurdled over barriers throughout the entire season. I could not be more proud."
The tenacity of the PX XC team clearly paid off, with the girls snagging their second APAC championship in a row, while the boys placed 2nd behind Brent. Individually, the girls also dominated, with Renee Pearce placing 2nd, Evian Chai placing 4th, and Doreen Chang placing 7th. On the boy’s side, Raj Rana placed 10th. Though the race was short, it was also the culmination of a season's worth of hard work and dedication.

For co-captain Evian Chai, "although the placings were amazing, the highlight of the trip for me was our teamwork and comradery. Although the course was definitely a challenge, the unwavering support of my teammates gave me the motivation to push on up those hills,” adding that "I think this really contributed to our win, alongside our positivity." Throughout the race, the SASPX team could be found running up and down the course cheering on their teammates, creating a race to remember.
As for the future of this dynamic team, Coach Roselle remarks that "we will miss the three seniors [on the girls' team] leaving the team dearly, but will look to keep building on the success of the past couple of years. Our boys team has improved in our Thailand, China Cup and APAC races in each of the past three years and will bring back 6 of our 7 APAC runners and some strong young talent. The future looks strong for the team!" Given this, the XC team will surely bring about more exciting races in the years to come.

Varsity Girl’s Volleyball Finish Second After Loss in Championship Finals
The Varsity Girls Volleyball team faced off against ISB for a 5-set championship game after bouncing back from setbacks in the round robin games. In the first day of the tournament, the team suffered losses against AISG and ISB. However, the team won every respective game after before playing in the elimination rounds. They then processed to sweep TCIS and AISG in a 3-0 wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals, before playing against ISB in the championships. After two hard fought sets with comeback opportunities, Puxi unfortunately fell short and ISB won the match after concluding the third set 25-17.
The team did not have the perfect ending, but the team only grew closer. “I am unbelievably proud of this team for fighting for every ball, and giving it their all.” Sarah Markmann commented. “I felt our team got closer and played extremely well together, even though we didn’t end up with the result we were striving for.” For Sarah Markmann, the captain of the team, the tournament was also marks the end of her high school career. “This APAC was extremely bittersweet for me, as it was my third and last APAC for volleyball.” she said. “I am sad that I will not be able to play with this team again, but am forever grateful to have played with all of them this season.”

Varsity Boy’s Volleyball Finish Third in APAC
The Varsity Boys Volleyball also defeated TCIS to advance to the semifinals, but unfortunately fell short of a win against Brent. This resulted in the team facing off against ISB once again, a team that Puxi had lost to previously in the China Cup finals. However, Puxi came out with the win, finishing 3rd in the tournament.

“I know we got third, and it was disappointing for all of us, but this was the first year I felt like our team was truly a family.” Benson Chang, the captain of the team and a senior, commented. “We came together in APAC before quarterfinals and we just belted ‘hooked on a feeling’ in the gym. Everyone was staring at us, but that’s okay because it was the most memorable thing of the season.” Despite not finishing at the goal they were striving for, the results were not as important as the process. “That game we played with heart and with pride, but that game we played for each other.” Benson concluded.

Girl’s and Boy’s Tennis Team Win APAC for Double-Title
The SAS tennis team delivered a truly outstanding performance at this year’s APAC tennis championships, hosted at Concordia last week. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams won the tournament. This gives the boys’ tennis team a total of 8 APAC wins, and the girls a back-to-back championship as well as the most APAC wins of any sports team in SAS history.
The team’s triumphant finish was powered by many individual accomplishments. One standout performance was that of senior Livia Zhu and freshman Emilie Guan, who finished in second place overall for girls’ doubles. The duo played one of the memorable games of the tournament when facing off against ISB, a game in which they started out trailing 7-4, but managed to win the next three matches and ultimately the tiebreaker, emerging victorious. “They really pulled it together,” says team coach Kevin Ayow. “I could see the focus and concentration in them to dig deep and pull through.” Senior Edward Chen agrees: “[Zhu and Guan’s] game displayed their great mental toughness, resilience, and aggressive net play.” Another remarkable performance from the girls’ team came from sophomore Tania Tan, who placed first for girls’ singles. According to Ayow, Tan was able to win her round robin matches “very easily”, despite facing tough competition from players from other schools.
As for the boys’ team, freshman Jensen Wong and senior Nick Tan came in first place for boys’ doubles. Ayow commends the duo for their “consistent performance…they pretty much won [every game].” On the singles’ side, Edward Chen finished in first overall for boys’ singles, ending a successful season in which he won “all of [his] singles and doubles games.” Chen was followed closely by freshman Ethan Wang, whose strong performance gave him a well-deserved second place finish. Seniors Annika Wang and Matt Song came in second for the mixed doubles tournament. According to Livia Zhu, they faced “exceptionally strong” competition in the finals for the tournament. “However, they still gave it their all and hit many amazing winners,” comments Zhu. “Even though they eventually lost, it was a really great match.”
Tumblr media

Despite many individual accomplishments, the members of the tennis team also attribute their success to their exemplary team bond and strong sense of team spirit. “One strength that led to our win at APAC was our constant support for each other,” says Chen. Zhu agrees, remembering that “almost every match had team members watching and cheering on the sidelines.” Ayow lauds the entire team - “freshmen and seniors, boys and girls” - for going out of their way to attend each other’s’ matches, and acknowledges that this display of team pride was what led to the team receiving the APAC Sportsmanship Award. Fellow coach Nikki Wang also applauds the players for their sportsmanship and teamwork: “It is amazing to see how fast our young players grow…in understanding the spirit of this sport.”
With more than half of the team being seniors, this year’s APAC marks the end of many players’ high school tennis careers. And though the departing seniors are sad to leave the thrill of the game, they will equally miss their close bond with their teammates. From working on “the loudest team chant” before a game to “eating fried chicken and playing Spaceteam” together afterward, the team’s tight-knit relationship is strong both on and off the court. Chen sums it up: “I will definitely miss the feeling of belonging to a big family.”

Fourth-Place for Baseball in APAC
APAC Baseball was an exciting end for a dramatic season, and while it may look disappointing on the surface, the tournament actually showed the promise and hope this team has to come. SAS PX placed 4th at APAC this year, but regardless of the results, the team’s hard work and team spirit have been undeniably the strongest it has been in a while. “I feel fairly confident and optimistic to conclude that this team has done a great job over the weekend”, says 12th grade third baseman Arthur Liang, “yes, we may have lost to teams we could have not lost to, but coming this close to contend the championship shows the team’s great potential”.
The biggest example of that potential was exhibited in the thrilling crossover semifinals against HKIS at APAC. SAS was leading by 2-1 for six innings until the game ended with a 3-2 win for Hong Kong. Puxi and Hong Kong’s baseball teams have had a deeply rooted rivalry for what seems like forever, and it has been years since SAS eagles have won a game against HKIS. The competitive and close game against them at APAC this year shows the real threat of our current team. Arthur speaks on the team’s performance in the HK game here, saying that “Carter Mott had done a great job at closing the batters of HKIS, and our batters had regularly put the balls in play. The whole team was energetic throughout the game”.
Tumblr media
The close calls and high caliber baseball at APAC can serve as a manifestation of the strides the team has made since the beginning of the season. Ted Chang, 11th grade first baseman, recounts the year, saying that “in an arguably turbulent season, we saw the team gel together and become more and more tight-knit from practice to practice, and from game to game”. From the August, the theme of growth and team cohesion have been ever-present as the boys have work tirelessly to trust each other and improve their skills at every chance. “We always meet together; have team dinner; and are always trying to bond with each other. This team is not just a team to play baseball, but also a family where we are always together”, says Arthur, citing the importance of close relations between teammates as a driving force of our success this year. And while we might have not won the APAC championship, the team has experienced numerous amazing victories, being able to “clinch multiple crucial victories, record beautiful offensive hits, robust defensive team plays, and even a (controversial) win in China Cup” says Ted.
As for next year, Arthur hopes to “be able to win at the crossover game, and beat the hell out of HKIS for the championship”, which judging by the team’s in-game performance seems more and more likely. Ted closes the season by saying that “the memories we have made this year, the bitterness we tasted in every defeat, and the joy we experienced in every victory will motivate us to do even better and challenge for the APAC Champiosnhip next year”. It has been an amazing season and we are so proud of our boys. Thank you to the Puxi Varsity Baseball team for their continued hard work and perseverance.

Actual Madrid v Liverpool: The half strain will play in deciding Champions League closing
Actual Madrid v Liverpool: The half strain will play in deciding Champions League closing
Actual Madrid v Liverpool: The half strain will play in deciding Champions League closing
BBC Radio 5 stay’s protection of the Champions League closing begins at noon on Saturday, with kick-off at 19:45 BST. Mark Lawrenson is a part of their commentary workforce in Kiev.
I had by no means been as nervous earlier than a recreation as I used to be earlier than my first European Cup closing in 1984. A lot of the Liverpool workforce felt the identical means.
We had come all that means by means of the competitors and the complete metropolis was in a type of frenzy.
You might be conscious that a whole lot of the nation is behind you too, aside from Manchester United and Everton followers after all.
I used to be 26 and was not wanting big-game expertise, however that weight of expectation made it really feel totally different from each different match I had performed in earlier than – and I count on will probably be the identical for almost all of Jurgen Klopp’s squad too.
As I’m positive they’re discovering, it was not the hour or two earlier than the sport that was the issue, it was within the days beforehand.
The Liverpool workforce at Stadio Olimpico earlier than the 1984 European Cup closing – “as soon as I used to be out on the pitch, I felt wonderful,” stated Lawrenson (third from proper, prime row)
Making ready for a recreation like that is the worst time to really feel nerves, and the strain. It’s relentless – you can not escape it anyplace you go.
Even after we have been on the airplane to go to Rome for the 1984 closing, there have been followers on board going ‘good luck boys, we’ll win’ and all that type of factor.
We have been clearly very well mannered about it however we’d type of take a look at them and assume ‘how are you aware we’re going to win? In the event you do, I would wish to know the way we’ll do it’.
Psychology simply as necessary as ways for Klopp
Actual Madrid expertise necessary, however it’s not the whole lot – Klopp
The week earlier than the ultimate lasts a very long time. When you get into what I known as ‘game-mode’ on the day of the match, nevertheless, issues change.
There are nonetheless nerves, clearly. The 1984 closing was the largest evening of my profession and it positively felt prefer it, particularly with the ultimate being on the Stadio Olimpico in Rome and Roma enjoying at their very own floor.
That elevated the stress, however there are methods of coping with it.
Earlier than kick-off, I bear in mind our supervisor Joe Fagan saying to us ‘do not forget this lot are at residence. Think about the strain that we’d be underneath if we have been at residence at Anfield in a closing’.
He turned it round fully, to make us really feel optimistic in regards to the job that was in entrance of us.
That was the place Joe and the remainder of the Anfield bootroom boys – because the Reds’ teaching workers was identified – have been very intelligent.
We didn’t name it psychology in these days, it was plain man-management, and it was about getting the perfect out of the gamers within the actually massive video games, to ensure we carried out in them like we had accomplished throughout the remainder of the season.
Klopp will probably be attempting to do the identical forward of this weekend. His job is to get the workforce ticking the identical means they do once they play extraordinarily effectively.
‘Neglect the hype and the thousands and thousands watching on TV’
Contained in the Champions League closing stadium in Kiev
Klopp is aware of Liverpool want to start out by flying out of the traps and neglect they’re enjoying Actual Madrid and all their superstars.
He will probably be saying to his gamers that in the event that they deal with it like simply one other recreation, they usually play something like they know they’ll do, then they’ve a extremely good likelihood.
One of the simplest ways of doing that, from a participant’s perspective, is to actually attempt to neglect in regards to the build-up, the gang and the thousands and thousands watching on TV, and play the sport, not the event or the opposition.
It’s troublesome however what I’d do is type of transport myself to the outdated park pitch I performed on in Preston as a child, the place the foundations are the identical and the pitch is identical dimension – admittedly it may not be the identical situation, although.
Usually, it doesn’t matter what the event was, as soon as the match began and I made my first cross or first sort out, it turned simply one other recreation.
‘No nice workforce performs champagne soccer in each closing they win’
Actual Madrid have fun in Cardiff final yr – they’ve received the Champions League 3 times up to now 4 seasons. Not one participant to have performed for Liverpool this season has appeared in a Champions League closing, whereas eight of the Actual squad are in line to win the trophy for a fourth time
It’s much more necessary that Liverpool familiarize yourself with the event as a result of it’s new to them, in comparison with Actual, who’re going for his or her third Champions League triumph in a row.
Each groups have gotten gamers with excellent particular person capacity and they’re each devastating once they go ahead.
In addition to their glittering histories in European soccer, they each play in a means that neutrals take pleasure in watching. That’s uncommon for a recreation like this, and will probably be one thing to savour – though not by the Liverpool gamers.
The largest distinction between the edges is within the further expertise that this Actual workforce have gotten. As soon as they get in entrance in these massive video games, they know learn how to shut them out, whereas Liverpool haven’t proven they’ll do this but.
If Actual rating first in Kiev then they may do completely something to cease Liverpool increase any type of rhythm.
I do not really feel Zinedine Zidane’s aspect should play effectively to beat them, both. They’re serial winners for a motive, and no nice workforce performs champagne soccer in each closing they win. The profitable Liverpool aspect that I used to be part of within the 1980s definitely did not.
Lawrenson (prime row, fourth from proper) and his Liverpool team-mates have fun after beating Roma in a penalty shootout within the 1984 European Cup closing
Lawro’s prediction: Liverpool to win 2-1 AET
Actual are positively favourites however I nonetheless assume Liverpool will discover a technique to come out on prime.
That’s mainly what they’ve accomplished to get to the ultimate, in addition to rating an unlimited variety of objectives.
From the quarter-final in opposition to Manchester Metropolis onwards, it has appeared like there’s somebody up there taking care of them, due to the quantity of massive choices that have been mistaken and went of their favour.
I’ve been on cup runs the place one thing related has occurred and it gave us an enormous quantity of perception.
Liverpool have scored 40 objectives in 12 Champions League matches this season. Mohamed Salah (10), Roberto Firmino (10) and Sadio Mane (9) have scored 29 of them
If I used to be in that Liverpool workforce, and I used to be trying again at a few of these moments in opposition to Manchester Metropolis and Roma, I’d be considering ‘effectively we’re going to win it, as a result of the whole lot goes for us’.
If I’m proper, they usually do win it for a sixth time, then it will be an enormous achievement. It could not simply be a primary trophy for Klopp at Liverpool, it will be THE trophy.
In that situation, then in some methods what occurs subsequent doesn’t matter, as a result of you may simply take a look at successful the Champions League in isolation. It’s that massive.
However clearly you’d wish to see Klopp kick on and problem for the Premier League title subsequent season, so getting round £100m in prize cash will in all probability assist, though they may in all probability not be far wanting amassing that even when they lose.
Liverpool haven’t received the league title since 1990 and have completed fourth in every of Jurgen Klopp’s two full seasons in cost.
Being European champions will surely assist appeal to gamers too, though I believe Klopp is a supervisor any participant would wish to play for anyhow, simply due to the way in which his groups play.
As an individual he’s a large pull too – right me if I’m mistaken, however most individuals like him, do not they?
So successful on Saturday may assist Liverpool take the subsequent step, however I believe they’re in fairly good condition to push on anyhow.
Mark Lawrenson was talking to BBC Sport’s Chris Bevan.
Final week, Lawro appropriately predicted that Chelsea would beat Manchester United 1-Zero within the FA Cup closing.

Musings on the 2018 NFL Draft
1.  Cleveland Brown - Baker Mayfield
I don’t see it.  Too many red flags.  Don’t think he will be a complete disaster, but not the one I would hang my franchise hopes upon.  He will be given time to develop with the capable Tyrod Taylor in town.  Look for the Browns franchise and city to rally around the magnetism of Mayfield.  In the end though these magnets may prove to be like charges that end up repelling against each other.  Weak long ball thrower.
2.  New York Giants - Saquon Barkley
As a Penn State fan I’m thrilled for Barkley.  As an Eagles fan I’m not looking forward to dealing with him minimally twice a year.  Hard to see how he isn’t a day one success.  Picking a RB this high is questionable, but Gettleman clearly has a vision and plan.  I respect his unwavering assuredness.  The only thin, very thin argument that can be made against Barkley is that he failed to even crack the top-25 in average yards per carry in his final season at PSU.  One possible, albeit long-shot, benefit from this pick is that Odell Beckham is no longer on a stage of his own in terms of talent in that locker room.  It would be naive to think ODB will ever be a company man, but can Barkley possibly show him that you can be a superstar without all the antics?
3.  New York Jets - Sam Darnold
In the world of 50/50 success rates for first round QBs, I lean toward Darnold being one of the successes.  Although he is certainly no sure thing.  Improvises well, but seems to lose his California mind sometimes which leads to poor decisions which leads to the football finding its way into the hands of the defense.  This can be a correctable flaw.  Darnolds has shown tremendous ability to scramble and make plays on the run.
4.  Cleveland Browns - Denzel Ward
Many questioned the pick, but personally I loved it.  He shows up and does his job week in and week out.  Plug him in and let him perform.  There’s a fair argument to be made for Bradley Chubb, but if the Browns had Ward rated higher along with being more of a need they wisely stuck to their board.  Ward possesses both great speed and instinct.  Cleveland appears to finally have a sense of direction and purpose under John Dorsey.
5.  Denver Broncos - Bradley Chubb
Even GM John Elway couldn’t figure out a way to outsmart himself here.  There was no getting cute or creative.  Chubb not only was the right pick, he is the right fit for the Broncos defense.  Von Miller was somewhere in Von Miller’s world thrilled to get a fresh reinforcement to take some of the pressure off of him.
6.  Indianapolis Colts - Quenton Nelson
Argument can be made that Nelson is the best player in the draft.  Check the tape.  There’s a reason the Bears hired offensive line coach Harry Hiestand away from Notre Dame.  He takes talent and molds them into technically sound, fundamentally disciplined football players.  Strong is an understatement when describing Nelson.  Plug and play for the Colts with Nelson.  Colts finally seem to realize that for Andrew Luck to be Andrew Luck they need to keep him on the field and upright (that is as long as it’s not too late).
7.  Buffalo Bills - Josh Allen
Going back to the 50/50 success rate for first round QBs - count on Allen being a part of the fifty percent fail group.  His unGodly arm strength seemed to play snake charmer on GMs - including Brandon Beane.  Allen will be one of the QBs we look back at and see the obvious reasons he failed.  I don’t think he would complete sixty percent of his passes participating in the Dr. Pepper halftime challenge.  Seriously.
8. Chicago Bears - Roquan Smith
Chicago had to be hoping Nelson fell in their laps.  That being said, Smith is certainly no consolation prize.  Instincts for days, Smith has a knack for making plays.  He must use these instincts to overcome his lack of size.  He may disappear for small stretches, but count on him to reappear when a play needs to be made.
9. San Francisco 49’ers - Mike McGlinchey
McGlinchey better send coach Hiestand quite the thank you gift, as the fact that he was a Notre Dame offensive lineman had to help get him selected this high.  While he is overall a massive human being; he lacks great overall strength .  This was too high for someone who may turn out to be a player down the road.  49’ers look like they will expect him to start day one.
10. Arizona Cardinals - Josh Rosen
A player that can’t get out of his own head and can’t seem to stay healthy.  Concussions were an underplayed storyline for Rosen going in to this draft.  As is his short arms.  Rosen may just prove to be a great tease as his throwing mechanics are pretty and he will make an occasional play once he gets on the field.  This won’t take long as Sam Bradford will Sam Bradford his way to being out of action any day now.
11. Miami Dolphins - Minkah Fitzpatrick
I want to like Fitzpatrick, but once Miami took him I could no longer see him being successful.  Miami should be thankful for Cleveland because they have hid in the shadows of ineptitude for far too long.  From owner to GM to head coach - it’s a cluster bomb of mediocrity (at best).  Fitzpatrick somehow regresses once he puts on that Dolphin uniform.  Best case scenario, the Dolphins put him at safety from the start and let him make plays.
12. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Vita Vea
Good pick that specifically fits a Bucs need in defensive line beef and bulk.  Tampa has plenty of holes to fill; including eventually replacing an overmatched head coach, but Vea will do his job well.  I’m not the biggest fan of combine numbers, but doing 41 reps on the bench is cool - and ridiculously impressive.
13. Washington - Da’Ron Payne
Strong as all get-out, Payne to me looks too often to be moving in quicksand.  Doesn’t explode.  Plodding is the word that comes to mind.  Limited skillset.  Did I mention, like Vea, he is ridiculously strong (seriously, Youtube him benching in high school).  Would have gone Derwin James here.
14. New Orleans Saints - Marcus Davenport
I’m torn on Davenport.  Clearly, the Saints are not.  They gave up some serious future stock to get him.  The Saints are most certainly all in on trying to win one more Lombardi Trophy with Drew Brees.  You can fairly make the argument that Davenport has equal chance to be a star and a bust.  Questionable football instincts.  Davenport will also, fairly or not, be compared to the whoever the Packers select with this Saints pick next year.  The most curious part of this move is that they gave up a piece of their future for the present, but drafted a player who seemingly will need time to develop?
15. Los Angeles Raiders - Kolton Miller
Jon Gruden likes to think he’s the smartest guy in the room.  He better be with this pick.  What an Inspector Gadget reach with Miller.  Yes. he is talented.  To me this was way too high for the talent.  Miller must strengthen his waist down foundation or he can expect to be bullied which will make a physically vulnerable Derek Carr very uncomfortable in the pocket.  Not sure what GM Reggie McKenzie; I mean GM Jon Gruden was doing with nearly all of his picks.
16. Buffalo Bills - Tremaine Edmunds
Good bloodlines here being the son of Ferrell Edmunds, Tremaine is still a puppy at 19.  Reasonable to think he will be overwhelmed at times on the field as he tries to adjust to the pace and play of the NFL game.  Being only 19 he certainly has room to grow.  Bills hope his athleticism gets him through early on.  Buffalo needs to give Edmunds the space and freedom to make plays.
17. Los Angeles Chargers - Derwin James
At first I thought this was a mistake.  That the Chargers took a player that had to be previously selected.  James lasting to pick seventeen was an early gift under the palm tree for Los Angeles.  James has the ability to make an impact on the field in so many facets of the game.  Some injury history.  Will be a defensive leader the day he walks through the door.
18. Green Bay Packers - Jaire Alexander
Combine superstar who spent more time off of the field injured than on it.  His 2017 season was underwhelming at best.  Even when he did find his way onto the field, he remained limited due to said injuries.  Plenty of confidence and personality.  Will he have the game to match?  Likely to do the punt returning for a team in need of one.  Looks to be a nickel corner at best.
19. Dallas Cowboys - Leighton Vander Esch
Late bloomer and incredibly athletic even in the world of elite NFL athletes; Vander Esch will need time to develop.  Injury risk as well.  Not afraid to muck it up and stick his nose in to make plays.  Tough.  Will this toughness excelerate his fragility ala Sean Lee.  Questions exist as to how high of a ceiling he has.  Dallas did attempt to address an overall defensive side of the ball need.
20. Detroit Lions - Frank Ragnow
A center drafted in the top twenty of the first round.  Times are a changing.  He’s not necessarily exciting, but he does his job well.  Great size who plays the position physically more than athletically.  Room to grow.  Thinks the position.  Will need to improve technique to counter the strength of NFL interior lineman.  This was a solid, albeit not exactly exactly exciting, pick by the Lions.
21. Cincinnati Bengals - Billy Price
A second center drafted in the top twenty-one picks of the first round.  The universe is being flipped on its head.  In reality, Price has the makeup to play both center and guard which is appealing to NFL teams.  Used his strength to dominate on the college level.  Won’t get away with this at the next level.  A lack of discipline and efficiency in his play may lead to Price seriously struggling no matter the position he plays.  Needs to focus on other aspects of his position beyond just brute strength.
22. Tennessee Titans - Rashaan Evans
Evans can play some football.  Attacks the line and aggressively pursues ball carriers and quarterbacks alike.  High motor.  Speed.  Agility.  Susceptible to over pursuing and being caught out of position.  Patriots had to hope he lasted just one more pick.  Smart choice by the Titans.
23. New England Patriots - Isaiah Wynn
Depending on your opinion of Wynn he can play either guard, tackle, both or neither.  He displays great agility and speed for a player his size.  Day one, first snap starter.  The Patriots did themselves a favor is selecting someone who will excel at the next level while figuring out which position he will excel later.  With Bill Belichick he may just be asked to play multiple positions.  Equally effective at run blocking and pass protecting.  Real value here.  As an Eagles fan, Wynn was one of the players I’d hoped fell.
24. Carolina Panthers - D.J. Moore
Maryland found ways to get Moore the ball in space and let his athleticism take over.  Moore is physically gifted, but remains unpolished.  If he expects to find success in the NFL he will need to drastically improve his route running and ability to go up and get the football (especially with Cam Newton throwing him said football).  Opportunities for Moore should be plentiful as Carolina is very thin at wide receiver.  If used properly, Christian McCaffrey and Moore could create real headaches for opposing defensive units.
25. Baltimore Ravens - Hayden Hurst
Has the look and attitude.  The fact that hall-of-fame tight end Ozzie Newsome selected him is a high compliment in itself.  The Ravens need a lot.  A rebuild appears to be on the horizon.  They could have selected a quarterback here (wait for it), but instead gave Joe Flacco a weapon he surely needs.  I liked other tight ends more than Hurst.  Given his age (24), he better produce from the jump.  Could be an effective safety valve for a young quarterback Baltimore may try to develop in the near future (wait for it).
26. Atlanta Falcons - Calvin Ridley
Have to love the storylines with Ridley joining fellow Tide receiver Julio Jones in Atlanta after closing out a terrific Alabama career with a BCS championship.  Slipped a bit due to size and a concern he could get pushed around due to his slight build.  Look for corners to try to bump Ridley at the line.  Drops could also be a concern.  Scary with the ball in his hands.  Can be an elite route runner.  Walks into a great situation with the Falcons.  Plenty of talent to take the pressure off of him to immediately perform.
27. Seattle Seahawks - Rashaad Penny
Feels time for Pete Carroll to jump ship and return to the college ranks where his rah, rah attitude can once again prove effective to a new crop of players.  His message has become white noise in Seattle.  Penny is talented, but good luck trying to run behind an offensive line that couldn’t keep an elementary school child from breaking through in a game of Red Rover.
28. Pittsburgh Steelers - Terrell Edmunds
Good story with Terrell and his brother both being selected in the first round.  Pittsburgh will have wished they had Terrell’s brother.  Good bloodlines, but not as gifted physically as Tremaine.  Seemed to be better options for the Steelers here.  Hope is Terrell is able to mature into a poor man’s version of Troy Polamalu.  His speed will put him in position to make plays.  Problem is he tends to both miss tackles and get run over by stronger ball carriers.  Needs time.
29. Jacksonville Jaguars - Taven Bryan
Lacks what all great golf putters have - feel.  Athletically he clearly belongs in the NFL although he could benefit from increasing his waist down strength.  What he lacks is the game action to learn situational instincts.  Right place to go in Jacksonville as they are loaded up front.  Bryan will likely be placed in specific defensive packages, backing up the uber talented starting defensive line.  The Jaguars have a Super Bowl caliber defensive unit.
30. Minnesota Vikings - Mike Hughes
Physical, tough, in-you-face corner.  Will look to jam receivers at the line of scrimmage.  His weaknesses arise when a receiver gets past the jam.  His lack of height will hurt him in 50/50 situations while his lack of game experience leads to him being susceptible to getting caught out of position.  Going to Minnesota will allow Hughes to start in nickel packages as the Vikings appear to be set with starters Xavier Rhodes and Trae Waynes.  Look for him to handle the punt returning.
31. New England Patriots - Sony Michel
Dion Lewis 2.0.  Not known as a great pass catcher, but New England will look to get him the ball on short passes out of the backfield.  Potential injury risk.  Expect the Patriots to limit his use and exposure as Josh McDaniels has a bevy of backfield options to work with.  High character.  Very intelligent.  Will fit right in with the Belichick way.
32.  Baltimore Raven - Lamar Jackson
The Eagles did well getting a 2019 second round pick from Baltimore.  Newsome couldn’t resist putting an exclamation point on his GM legacy as he drafts what the Ravens hope is Joe Flacco’s replacement.  Flacco has been getting by on reputation alone for several years now.  He’s simply not a good quarterback.  Jackson may just have an opportunity in year one to play.  Despite the freak athleticism I don’t see a complete package in Jackson.  Can Greg Roman work the same magic he did with Colin Kaepernick?  Thin base ala RG3.  This will not bode well if he looks to run on a regular basis.  Has shown a lack of accuracy on short ball passes.
    Top QBs
Kyle Lauletta - New York Giants
If he had worn a different jersey during his college years, Lauletta would have been a top pick in this draft.  Calm in the pocket with surprising mobility.  Great pocket sense which will give his receivers time to get open and make plays.  Questionable arm strength.  Can play from under center and in the shotgun.  Giants finally showed their hand with Davis Webb.  Lauletta is now their future.
Mason Rudolph - Pittsburgh Steelers
Big and strong.  Sound like another Steeler quarterback?  Willing to stand in and take a hit.  Has not proven the ability to throw on the run.  Smart.  A leader in all facets of the game.  May need some time to adjust to the pace of the NFL.  Great opportunity to continue the Steelers success for the next decade.  Uncanny ability to make big plays with his arm and by giving his receivers the time to get open.
Sam Darnold (see above comments)
Has a Chance (see above comments)
Baker Mayfield
Bust Alert (see above comments)
Josh Rosen
Josh Allen
Lamar Jackson
High Value, High Reward Selections
Braxton Berrios - New England Patriots
Could there be a more New England player.  Belichick must be salivating at what he will be able to do with Berrios.
Kerryon Johnson - Detroit Lions
The Lions have put together a talented group of backs with the addition of LaGarrette Blount and now Johnson.  Ameer Abdullah being cut is fast becoming a real possibility.
Dallas Goedert - Philadelphia Eagles
Fits one of the few Eagles needs.  In losing Trey Burton and Brent Celek Philadelphia was very thin at the tight end position.  Goedert will allow Philadelphia to play more of their twelve package (which they played about 40% of the time last season).  If he can stay healthy, also like the pick of Josh Sweat by the Eagles.
Justin Reid - Houston Texans
Physically and mentally Reid’s game is on point.  NFL starter.  Size, speed and instincts.  Teams will look back and wonder why they passed on him.  Highly versatile.  Did I mention his football IQ.  Can get beat by quicker receivers.  Also, to compensate for his lack of elite level speed Reid looks to jump routes which can make him vulnerable to big plays and double moves.
Armani Watts - Kansas City Chiefs
Four-year starter who has all the tools to be a NFL starter.  Question is can he play in and play out be consistent enough to remain on the field.  Must improve his tackling.  Looks to make plays rather than wait for a play to come to him.
Michael Gallup - Dallas Cowboys
Ability to go over, around and through defenders.  Smooth yet at the same time plays with an attitude.  Needs to become a better route runner.  Given my complete distaste for the Cowboys I lack the desire to continue to compliment this pick.  Gallup projects to be a solid starter in the league.
Mike Gesicki - Miami Dolphins
I like him, I really do, but my dislike of Ryan Tannehill runs so deep I think Gesicki will just need to buy time until he gets to play with a quality NFL quarterback.  When he gets that chance, look for Gesicki to excel.

MS Dhoni brings sleepy Palam ground to life in Vijay Hazare Trophy

MS Dhoni brings sleepy Palam ground to life in Vijay Hazare Trophy
Located less than a 30-minute pressure from Delhi’s international airport, the Airforce Sports activities Complex in Palam, on maximum days, resembles a sleepy citadel. The iron gates at the doorway have a signboard that warns:
“Trespassers could be shot.”
The floor has in the beyond staged infinite games without plenty fuss. On Wednesday afternoon, this venue sprang to lifestyles. There have been police officers marshaling the boundary line — to maintain a tab on a vast institution of fanatics — all perched on the top of the skinny iron fence that shapes the outline of this ground. They were boisterous and started to chant “Dhoni, Dhoni” in unison. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is in the neck of the woods, and his presence had quietly woken this old fashioned, laid lower back cricketing backwater from its slumber.
No longer exceedingly, this motley bunch had queued up — some perched at the fence, others ready outdoor the gates — simply to seize a glimpse in their cricketing icon.
They aren’t from Delhi alone. a few have traveled all of the manners from Chennai. “We had been in Delhi for the final 4 days just to fulfill Dhoni hai ya,” stated Akash, who’s made the journey together with his cousins. They got their fill of the Jharkhand captain, who turned into in action against Vidarbha inside the quarterfinals of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. They have been made to attend. In fact, there have been doubts as to whether or not Dhoni would bat in any respect. Vidarbha had chosen to bat first. Jharkhand needed to chase a paltry goal of a hundred and sixty. The restlessness grew and the skinny posse of police officers who were marshaling the fence had a torrid time in containing the exhilaration.
The door opening stand by Jharkhand openers — Pratyush Singh and Ishan Kishan simplest introduced to their frustration. That would best be momentary although as Vidarbha pegged Jharkhand extremely with three quick wickets after the drinks c language. Ishank Jaggi, who walked in at No.five, got one of the most antagonistic receptions he may want to ever have imagined in a domestic recreation. “Jaggi was hitter’s air Dhoni ko bull,” shouted one from the gang. The whole floor was drowned all over again by means of that each one-too-acquainted chants of “Dhoni, Dhoni” once more. Each run scored by Jaggi became jeered at. The death of Saurabh Tiwary, however, brought the grins again.

Hitting Ground Balls? – Turn Them Into Line Drives
Placing the ball in play on the ground is not continually a bad issue, but turning ground balls into line drives will truly help the hitter’s batting average and chances of playing baseball on the better tiers. Hitters with properly speed can prosper with the aid of hitting the ball on the floor, especially in teens baseball, but sooner or later the potential to pressure the ball into the outfield is important. Of path, hitting floor balls is higher than hitting pop-America but hitting the ball constantly on the floor is an indication of a defective essential swing.
People generally suppose that hitting the top of the ball, which results in floor balls, is caused by hitting down on the ball or chopping at it. In my 21 years of coaching baseball, hardly ever could I come across hitters who virtually chopped on the ball. I discovered that maximum ground balls hit have been because of the hitters palms had been in an upward direction on the preliminary portion of the swing, generally resulting from the lead elbow developing at the beginning of the swing. This wrong action is typically referred to as a chicken-wing, which does no longer permit hitters to bring their fingers to the appropriate palm-up, palm-down hitting role at contact.
With this in thoughts, right here are the drills with the intention to generally turn ground balls into line drives.
To rid the player of the chicken wing hassle, have them place their fielder’s glove underneath their lead armpit and take numerous swings this manner, allowing the glove to fall out at the observer via.
Have the hitter stand belly button far away from a net and take swings at the end of the bat just scraping the net because it comes via the hitting quarter. This will prevent the hitter from casting the bat out and over the ball that could motive ground ball hitting. This drill and the following on will assist players to broaden the right palms to the ball and hand position important to hit the ball within the air.
Region a tree at knee high level and feature hitters paintings on hitting balls at this height till they start to hit line drives or strong fly balls. Hitters with incorrect swings will always hit floor balls at this pitch stage. Hitters will expand the correct hip flip and swing with a purpose to hit stable line drives at the knee excessive pitch, as stated.
* Hitters can combine those drills and carry out all 3 at the same time. This turns into greater hard, however, can boost up the method of developing the proper baseball swing.

Darnold has shown tremendous ability to scramble and make plays on the run.
Limited skill set.
Tough.  Will this toughness accelerate his fragility ala Sean Lee.

Thin base.

Baker Mayfield
