1. Did you like DW as a child?

Depends. What do you consider a child? I saw Doctor Who for the first time when I was 16 or 17. Does that count? Let’s say that it does. I did enjoy it.

2. Your age at the time of the revival?

3. First DW episode you ever saw?

An Unearthly Child. I wanted to watch it all in order! Still do! My first New Who episode was “Blink,” as forced upon me by @raisegrate. I did enjoy it.

4. Did you have any of the toys?

I didn’t at the time, but I do now. I have a couple of screwdrivers, a Fourth Doctor, an Ice Warrior, and not-quite-Legos of Doctors 1-11. (-WD)

5. Which DW character did you play on the playground?

N/A.

6. Monster(s) that scared you most as a child?

N/A. Nothing scares me.

7. Joke/story you didn’t get as a kid?

N/A. I get all jokes/stories.

8. DW opinion that has changed since you were a kid?

That the only way to watch it was from the very beginning. I eventually gave in and watched New Who before finishing Classic Who.

9. Who introduced you to DW?

Pretty sure I heard about it initially on a forum I went to called The Douglas Adams Continuum. That’s when I started watching the First Doctor. Again, @raisegrate showed me my first New Who. Eventually, I started watching New Who in its entirety with @catastrofries and they started watching Classic Who with me for @rassilonwatchathon.

10. Did you like Sarah Jane Adventures as a child?

Didn’t even know it existed as a child. But I liked it as an adult.

11. Who is your Doctor?

One. He’s the first I saw and I’ve went through some of his more than once, due to the podcast, so he has a special place in my heart.

12. Your favourite Doctor?

It varies depending on the day. I quite like Two, Eleven, and Twelve, though.

13. Least favourite Doctor?

Possibly 5 or 13? More because they don’t get a whole lot to do, than them being bad.

14. Best regeneration?

Technically speaking, there’s something about that first one that is still so good. Emotionally speaking, Two’s regeneration is terrifying and I quite like Twelve’s speech before regenerating.

15. Do you like “Doctor-Lite” episodes?

Yeah! They’re all pretty good! Even “Love and Monsters!” Yeah, I said it! (The end is bad, but the rest is good.)

16. Who is the most human Doctor?

One calls himself human a handful of times. Does that count? If not, definitely Five. He seems the most like a regular guy in a weird situation out of all of them.

17. Best multi-Doctor story?

The Day of the Doctor, for sure.

18. Best Doctor monologue?

Eleven’s speech to young Amy in “The Big Bang.” That episode is just solid all around.

19. What do you think TenToo/MetaCrisis Doctor is doing now?

He’s definitely fucked off somewhere and abandoned Rose. He runs a cat cafe that is definitely a front for something, but no one can quite figure out what.

20. Best Doctor/companion pairing?

One/Barbara, Two/Jamie, Three/Jo, Four/Leela, Five/Tegan, (haven’t seen enough of Six, any of Seven, and I honestly don’t remember the companion for Eight), Nine/Rose (that’s the only option!), Ten/Donna, Eleven/Amy-Rory, Twelve/Clara, Ruth/Thirteen.

Classic Who: This is hard. Jamie? Sarah Jane? Leela? New Who: Donna Noble.

Not sure what this means exactly... My second favorite? If so, I gave three for favorite Classic Who, so one of them. New Who: Rory.

Classic: Ben Jackson or Peri. New: Ryan.

Classic: Two, Jamie, and Zoe. New: Eleven, Amy, and Rory.

I love Steven Taylor. I feel like he doesn’t get mentioned enough.

Probably gonna get some hate for this, but Romana II. She’s good and I like her, but I was expecting a lot more. I honestly prefer Romana I.

I love Rory’s dad.

Kamelion. AM I RIGHT? But seriously, Amelia Rumford from “The Stones of Blood.”

I hated Tegan when she first came on, but now I love her.

“The Eleventh Hour.” It’s just a lot of fun.

So I don’t sound repetitive and say Series 5 again, Clara’s arc in her last season is great.

48. Thoughts on series 11/12?

I find it largely boring and not well-written. Though there are some things I like! I love Ruth a bunch.

49. How much of Classic Who have you seen?

I’ve seen from “An Unearthly Child” to “The Two Doctors.” And the movie.

50. Who should have had another series?

Doctor: Nine. Or Eight. Or Ruth. Companion: Kamelion, but done better.

MONSTERS

51. Favourite monster/villain?

I love them Fuzzy Chicken Nuggets. (The Yeti.)

52. Most creative monster?

The Silence are an interesting concept.

53. Monster(s) that scares you most?

OAK AND QUILL from “Fury From the Deep.” Fuck those guys.

I hate power level questions. Next.

I get really tired of the Daleks sometimes, y’all.

Chumblies or quarks.

57. In your opinion, what makes a monster good?

The writing. You can do great things with most of them. Even the ones you dislike. Like, I hate the farting aliens, but they are occasionally used well.

58. Daleks, Cybermen or Weeping Angels?

If I had to pick, I’d say... Cybermen. Daleks are very samey and loud. Weeping Angels get less interesting every time they are used. But there’s a human element to the Cybermen that, when utilized, can be very effective and unsettling.

59. Best Dalek story?

The one where Two rides around on ones he made nice.

60. Best one time villain/monster?

I don’t know what it is, but whatever it is in “Midnight.”

SJA is more consistent, but the highs of Torchwood are higher.

I do DW analysis for @rassilonwatchathon AND The Dipp. So yes. My fave is TARDIS Eruditorum, though.

Seventh Doctor era

Mind you, I have not watched Survival yet. Like with all good food, I’m saving some of it for later. But I’ve seen the rest.

First thought : holy shit that’s good. Perhaps the strongest era of Doctor Who. At least it’s up there with the Capaldi era. But really this is some ridiculously strong stuff, that churns masterpieces after masterpieces.

Second thought : Yes, Season 24 is the weakest of the bunch, but in no way the disaster fans usually describe. Yes it has two episodes below average. But the other ones are good.

Third thought : In theory Seven’s character should not appeal to me that much. I am extremely fond of morally ambiguous chessmasters, end-justify-means grey eminences, but I don’t think that characterization suits the Doctor. I do like my idiot in a box that relies on improvisation and bullshitting to save his life. I still like Seven a lot. Probably because McCoy does a great job at cutting down the badassery and turning on the charm. Also that’s a bit of variety so that’s nice.

Fourth thought : Ace was wonderful, as expected. But the biggest surprise was Mel, who I never expected to like as much as I ended up doing.

Someone please tell me, is there any Big Finish stuff that picks up from when she travels with Glitz?

So here are the McCoys stories, ranked from worst to best

Time and the Rani : yes that story is rubbish. But not the worst of Doctor Who by a long shot. There are still some good moments to be found. And none of the offensive stuff of, say Tomb of Cybermen or The Celestial Toymaker, so that’s a plus. The Rani pretenting to be Mel for a third of the story is hilarious and Kate O’Mara is delightfully camp. It’s so nice to see Seven at his very beginning, suffering from amnesia, and totally out of his depth. And the Leonians are ridiculous, but provide perhaps the most striking moment of the story : that Leonian skeleton.

So let me explain. Leonian explodes, and we see his skeleton imprinted in the rocks. The skeleton is at first hilariously bad. And then the Doctor, still being manipulated by the Rani, says “that sad skeleton”. And that just punches me. It’s just a weird and sad, and mournful moment. And after watching Six casually murdering people left and right, that’s a welcome moment.

Silver Nemesis : the bad apple of the Season 25. Because yes, the Cybermen are boring generic evil robots. And there’s nothing remotely new or interesting in the plot. But Lady Peinforte is great fun, and there are still some awesome moments. Also Ace gets to kill a bunch of Cybermen.

Dragonfire : yep. I don’t like this one that much. Actually this is a bit of a noble failure, because the story really tries. There’s some cool aesthetics, that iconic cliffhanger, lots of philosophical jokes, and perhaps the most gruesome villain’s death in the show’s history... But to me, it doesn’t quite work. I just found it boring. The plot was boring, and the resolution a bit of a rushed job. But still, yanno, they tried.

And that’s it. That’s the three below-average stories of Seven’s era.

Delta and the Bannermen : this is a solid one. It’s a lot of fun, mixed with some horrible stuff. People will say the tone is all over the place, but that’s what Doctor Who is about. That’s one of the rare shows where you can get away with that, so enjoy and revel in it. Also it’s so weird? Delta’s baby. Guy eats jelly to turn into basically a space bee. There’s a mysterious bee-keeper who is also a Doctory-like figure. Also some American spies, for reasons. All this versus space tourists that get disintegrated, while Kurosawa-like alien samuraïs try to genocide another alien race. It’s mad. It’s fun. It’s shocking. And best of all it doesn’t take itself seriously at all.

Remembrance of the Daleks : I understand the love because it’s well done. The Daleks are scary. And there’s Dark!Seven in it. So it’s objectively good. I just don’t love it. I think I like Daleks stories best when there’s a moral dilemma behind, or at least some questioning behind the plot. Here it’s a bit straightforward : two Dalek factions are fighting, and Earth is in the crossfire, and the Doctor manages to find a way to destroy them all (and what a way). There’s some commentary about fascism in 1960′s Britain. And that discussion about ripples in time. It’s great! I’m just not that interested in what it has to say.

Paradise Towers : Oh, this is a great one. I love nearly everything about it. It’s a good social satire episode, and a brilliant commentary about housing projects, brutalist architecture and its connection to fascism. Also brutalism is something that fascinates me, mainly because of its endless dystopian possibilities, so that’s right up my alley. The world-building is fascinating. You have that bleak post-apocalyptic society, where abandonned children have formed gangs and have ungoing territorial fights, cannibalistic old women, Nazi caretakers and janitors. There’s some genius decisions, like having all the Kangs have names like Fire-Escape, or Garbage-Bin, because the tower is all they’ve ever known. Sure the main villain’s acting is over the top. But everything else is great. Including Mel and Pex.

The Happiness Patrol : I love me a good political satire. And I love everything about the aesthetics. The Tardis painted pink. The blues versus the camp. And yes the Kandyman is scary, and a great villain, because he’s a petulant child. The plot is a bit meandering at times, which is why I don’t find it as successfull as the Sun Makers, or Vengeance on Varos. But it’s still damn good.

And now the remaining episodes are all 10/10 in my book

The Curse of Fenric : I have two minor problems with that story. The first one is the excruciatingly bad accents of the suposed-to-be Soviet soldiers. That just breaks the story whenever they speak. And the big scene between Fenric, Ace and the Doctor, when the Doctor betrays Ace doesn’t quite land for me.

Battlefield : I have raved on and on about how great Battlefield was. I should do a separate post about it. But really it’s so much more than nostalgia UNIT tour and Brigadier hommage, because there’s a whole lot of commentary and criticism aimed at UNIT and the Brig. Mainly it’s a story about how the past had its highs and lows. Like the Brig has its failures, but we love him anyway, and now it’s time to move on. And nostalgia of the past never did any good. Also Brigadier Bamberra. Enough said.

The Greatest Show in the Galaxy : that episode scared the hell out of me. Also damn great, and so much meta. And anything involving McCoy performing magic tricks is gold.

Ghost Light : At first the biggest WTF?? But also a story where you need to stop thinking too closely about the plot and just go with the flow, because this is a story that is held together by the images it creates. It’s not so much plot driven, as association driven. And its layers on top of layers on top of layers of metaphors, Victorian Gothic, and ferocious criticism of Victorian society and th British Empire. And to me, the best story of Classic Who.

4- favourite dalek story: Revelation Of The Daleks is so fuckin dark and I love it. It features a half-finished dalek vegging for death, someone being stabbed to death with a needle (not in much detail fortunately but it’s a grim scene) and Davros feeding the human race their own dead relatives. My only problem with it is that it takes the whole of the first episode for 6 and Peri to join the action, but at least those 45 minutes aren’t filled by endless tardis bickering like in episodes such as Vengeance On Varos.

5- if you could pick any companion to travel with any doctor, which would it be: romana and 7.

15- if you could travel with one doctor, who would it be: 12

22- least favourite doctor and why: probably 5, because he has a resting cliffhanger face and the stories weren’t always that great. That being said, the actual performance of Davison is superb.

23- leafs favourite companion and why: not counting Dodo who I have not seen any of except clips, I’d probably say Rose. She was great with 9 but when she was with 10 she just because so bloody annoying. Especially since she’s basically the villain in Mickey’s arc over his 3 stories of Tardis travelling, and I like mickey.

26- top 3 episodes:

#3 - city of death: it’s a fun run around Paris with romana being delightful, 4 at her best, Douglas Fucking Adams writing, a fantastic villain, fun supporting cast, and a cameo from John Cleese. What more could you want? Well...

#2 - Warriors’ Gate: the whole of Season 18 is absolutely soaked in atmosphere, but none more so than the masterpiece of a story. The white void, the slavers, the collapse of the Tharil society, this story is the best of the Bidmead season for good reason. Also, the doctors way of solving it is “do nothing, if it’s the right sort of nothing” and the villains big evil line at the end is “it’s the end for all of you! I’m finally getting something done!”

#1 - The Happiness Patrol: this pink noir is a romp from start to finish, has some wonderful undertones in everything from Thatcherism to capital punishment to totalitarianism to the importance of sadness. Also it’s the most camp thing to come out of classic who, and that’s really saying something.

31- thoughts on the sonic glasses: I love them and I think they fit the character of 12 perfectly. But then again, they were introduced in the first story I ever saw so I’m biased.

16: Favourite TARDIS interior?

Late Seven/Early Eight’s blue steampunk/Victorian sitting room. It’s just so dramatic while also being a fairly comfortable atmosphere. Twelve’s is a pretty close second, but only after he warmed up the lighting and added the bookshelves (before that it just majorly set off my ‘oh this is a hospital can i not be here’ sense).

22: Least favourite Doctor (why?)

Uh. Seven. Definitely Seven. Forget the moral ambiguity, the constant manipulation and complete inability to pick up on what he’s doing to the people closest (?does that word even apply with him really?) is what really turns me off. Plus there’s just something about Sylvester McCoy’s serious face that makes me start stressing out (probably because his eyes demand your attention and I’m really bad at and with eye contact).

But Seven in the Doctor Who TV Movie doesn’t set off that ‘danger’ reaction, so… I guess I like him a little bit? There’s enough little background details that I don’t out and out hate him tho.

Maybe I should have said Ten. Most of why I like him now is that I’ve been stuck using him for a fic and have been interpreting him in a way I can actually swallow, though his comics and the Day of the Doctor was a lot more palatable than most of his stories for me.

23: Least favourite companion (why?)

Ugh. Rose Tyler. This is about 43% on account of her entire personality being an aggravation in canon (mostly in Series 2, honestly, but I can’t say I ever liked her, except maybe when Jack was aboard the TARDIS) but the other 57% is the fandom, because there’s so many people that just seem to endlessly churn out Doctor/Rose, not bothering to tag the presence of Rose Tyler as a major character, or shafting other characters for the sake of selling the glory that is Rose.

…yes, I am still sour about that one Ten/Rose fic I found that did all three of those things, also involving the two ace-est editions of the Doctor (5 and 7, don’t even try to deny it) randomly appearing to tell Martha (who had been nothing but reasonable even within the text of the fic itself) that she should effectively go die because she’s getting in the way of Doctor/Rose.

26: Favourite episode (or top 3 if thats too hard)

1) VENGEANCE ON VAROS. OH MY GOD VENGEANCE ON FUCKING VAROS. SIX BEING GREAT WITH PERI AND BEING 100% PROTECTIVE WITHOUT BEING NASTY TO HER? GOOD. EVERY COMPLAINT/ETHICAL COMPLAINT I’VE EVER HAD ABOUT REALITY TV? ON POINT. THE BAD GUY GETS NO WIN WHATSOEVER? EXCELLENT.

2) Spearhead From Space (my first Classic Who serial and confirmation that I was making all the right choices in getting into it). Liz Shaw. The fucking wheelchair escape nyoom. Literally everything the Doctor does, especially during his second escape scene and the flirting scene with Liz *insert ‘god I wish that was me’ meme here* even if he was just trying to get the TARDIS key.

3) Uuhhh… I gotta say The Rebel Flesh/Almost People even though that probably counts as two episodes. I just really appreciate any story that treats clones (identical ones, specifically. Opposite sex clones are usually a bit less death prone) like they’re real people because they are. I’ve just always been irritated by the ‘disposable clone’/’replacement goldfish’ tropes and, while there was only one ‘edition’ of each person left at the end of the story and disregarding what the Doctor did to Amy-ganger, they actually call out the characters on treating the gangers as sub-human (sub-sentient in regards to the Doctor’s ganger?) beings simply because of the nature of their genesis.

27: Weirdest piece of merchandise you own

A sonic screwdriver that is an actual screwdriver (it’s got a selection of exchangeable heads are kept inside of the casing and that fit into a slot on the ‘handle’ end ). I initially got it because it was the cheapest sonic I could find on Amazon that I liked it was like $7? I can’t remember, but god what a good buy. It’s simultaneously the most useful and most anti-climatic fandom related thing I have and I love it.
