#because I hate Mew and Chuem

I've written it plenty, but let me say it with my full chest after episode 10.
I DON'T LIKE MEW AND CHUEM.
Tumblr media
They ain't shit. They suck. They are the worst. They are annoying.
Even the camera kept cutting Ray out probably to emphasize these two are basically the twins from The Shining.
This is not about the actors. This is fully about these horrible ass characters.
Mew refused to define his relationship with Top regulating Top back to the talking-phase, so when Top slept with Boston, they weren't actually dating. It's splitting hairs, I know. But I don't like Mew, so I'm being petty.
Then he acted like sex was some grand prize that Top had to prove worthy of.
Mew punched Ray in the club just so he could take his revenge on Top later.
He lit the papers on fire knowing that is Top's trauma.
Chuem and Mew are always such jerks to Ray then blamed Ray for Mew being a piece of shit after his breakup with Top.
He got Nick involved in his payback to Boston (like Boeing is doing to him, and I hope Boeing fucks everyone up!), only to get the sex tape and threaten Boston with it.
He told Top he'd give him another chance only to play games the same damn way he did before.
Oh, then Chuem!
She didn't care about Mew's boundaries regarding Top, and is super creepy about Top too.
She slut shames Boston all the time.
She is the only one keeping this project going, honestly, but she is quick to push her group members out the second she is unhappy.
She is the first to throw out that "friends don't treat friends this way" yet is the first one to throw verbal stones.
She lectured Ray as he was being arrested.
Chuem and Mew think they are superior to everyone else.
These might be 20-year old mistakes, but these characters still fucking suck.
I cannot stand them!

Let the sluts be sluts without all the damn judgement.

For me, this series is overflowing with cognitive dissonance.
I feel bad for Mew, but I'm frustrated that he would dive into a relationship with Ray that we can be fairly certain he doesn't really want. I love Ray and sympathize with his issues, but I hate what he's doing to Sand (and Mew, by agreeing to be with him in his emotionally vulnerable state). I hate Top for cheating on Mew, but I do genuinely think he loves Mew and wants to make it up to him. I love Sand but am also frustrated that he doesn't love himself enough to leave Ray. I feel bad for Nick but think his pain is kind of deserved because of his choice in men (and his infringement of privacy). I like Chuem for trying to be a peacekeeper, but her comments rub me the wrong way.
The only one I feel no dissonance over is Boston. Hate him through and through.

I think one of the things I’m loving (and also hating) about the friends group is that…while it’s clear they care about each other, they don’t really feel like actual friends.
Mew and Chuem seem like the only ones who are genuinely friends.
They all complain that Boston disappears all the time but they never check on him. They just assume he’s going to be okay. They move on and go about their day and wait for him to show up again.
Ray is a drunk who is pretty obviously hiding some thing (of the emotional variety) but none of them really seem to care enough to try and help him. They just complain. They don’t care to try and help him even thogh it’s obvious he needs it. The one line he has towards Sand this episode really puts it into perspective. He says he just doesn’t want to be alone. He is alone. He knows he can’t really rely on the others. He can’t confide in them.
Basically, they seem like a group of friends who only became friends because they were partnered on a project together and now they just all stick together.
It makes it feel so much more real. It makes the already appearing cracks make sense. It makes it so much more real and deserved that what’s about to happen is all it’s going to take for them to fracture.
The barely concealed resentment Boston has towards Mew. The intentional oblivion Mew has towards how Ray feels about him. Mew’s smug attitude towards well all of them. (Smug might not be the best way to describe it but I’m using it because I can’t think of a better one.)
Top may end up being the trigger, but the gun powder and dynamite were already there long before he showed up.

Only friends is hands down for me the best gmmtv bl this year. Not only they're not going the typical romcom bl route like 'enemies to lovers', 'always bickering but one person secretly like the other one', 'going on a vacation together', 'stuck up in the same bedroom', etc etc. They're not afraid to be different, they're not afraid to try something new. Every single episode is intense and make us curious about how the story gonna develop next week. There's no single boring episode. And all of the guest appearance is shocking but also make sense at the same time.
Talking about how special OF, one of the reason why they're so stand out is because of their characters. Every single character are so well written, they have their own flaw and their up and down moment. They're messy and f*cked up, one time you love them, but another time you hate them, all of them are complicated but that's what makes them so relatable at the same time. Not only the 7 main characters, but even the side character like Boeing (oh gosh I love how pathetic he is), April, Plug, Yo, Atom, Gap, Dan, literally all of them stand out in their own way.
We started by liking Mew, Ray, Nick, Sand, Chuem and despise Top and Boston (I still hate Boston anyway lmao), but ended up loving Top and sometimes Boston. There's also a time when we hate Mew, Ray, Nick, Sand, Chuem and liking Top and Boston.
There's a time when we questioning their decision, there's a time when we feeling bad about their life, there's a time when we worried about them. Everyone is so multi-dimension, complicated and so well written. And of course it couldn't be done without amazing actor and actress.
Force, Book, First, Khaotung, Neo, Mark, Lookjun and all of the side cast is doing a great job. In my opinion, Book and Khaotung are truly nailed their performance. I really love how versatile Book is, how different he is not only from his character in another series but also how different he potray Mew in the beginning and Mew in the end of the series (maybe it'a because Mew is my favorite character, I already make a different post about how great his character is).
And we can't deny how Khaotung is a phenomenal actor. Every single character that he played is match perfectly to him. And it's also applied to Ray. His life is messy and his mental is not stable, but Khaotung could deliver all of his emotion perfectly.
First has his own charm. Sand is charismatic, cool, the calmest character and I think First is the perfect choice to play Sand. And ofc, he and Khaotung has undeniable chemistry. Sand and Ray's relationship is the most intense one, and we've drawn so much to their romance because of it. First and Khaotung's acting match each other perfectly.
I love how Force could potraying Top as someone who's fierce but also soft at the same time. He is strong but also vulnerable at the same time. And we can't deny how great his chemistry with Book, from Enchante to A Boss and A Babe to Only Friends. All of their chemisty is great and I love how sweet their lovey dovey moments are.
And I'm so so so proud of Neo. Boston is different from himself and his usual character and Boston is definitely one of the most difficult character to play. He's carefree, doesn't care of other people except himself, and I think Neo's acting is slowly develop each time he appear in a series.
Nick is the first Mark's main role. But just how he stole viewers' heart with Tiwson in MSP, Nick also stole viewers' attention. Nick is the 'hopeful romantic' and the most insecure character. Just like Neo, Nick is so different from Mark in real life and I LOVE how Mark could potray Nick perfectly. And even though, I could never imagine before how he and Neo being paired up (I mean like it's the most absurd combination at first lmaoo) but suprisingly they have a great chemistry.
And lastly Lookjun, the only female main role. But, even though Chuem is the only female main character, she still stand out and not outshadowed by other characters, But I still hate gmm for not make her appear more. There's so much we haven't see about her character. AND OH MY GOD, I LOVE HER AND NONNIE'S DYNAMIC (gmm, I begging you can we have their own gl series next year?)
AND I LOVE THE ENDING SO MUCH. Even though there's something that could done better, but I love how realistic the ending is. Every single main characters develop into a better person (Yes, even Boston. I mean at least he apologize to Mew). Not every friendship will last forever and you entitled for your own trauma. So Mew's decision to not want continue being Boston's friends anymore is valid. And I love how Nick choose himself over other person.
In conclusion, Only Friends is one of the best gmmtv's work. They deserve all the hype from the very first trailer. AND I'm not joking when I said I don't need season 2, I think the ending is already enough (even though I'm sooo seated for side story, maybe about Boeing please? Or Boston's life in New York? lmaoo). We need more adult messy story like this, 3 Will Be Free or even like Friend Zone. So gmm, maybe Only Friends gl version for next year, please?

Hello 👋 rank the ofs character from favorite to least favorite
Thanks for the ask! Disclaimer that this is just my personal opinion and who I like and relate to. YMMV.
1. Mew - honestly very similar to me and very relatable and therefore my absolute favorite. You want to take me on a date? Laser tag and a bookstore are perfect. You want to basically propose to me? Decorate the room with paper flowers made from old books. That's also the way to my heart.
2. Top - I love him and totally see why Mew loves him. Treated badly by the narrative and the characters. Basically the punching bag for most of the series and never got to deal with his family issues OR his trauma OR his insomnia. Forever bitter about how he got shafted.
3. Chuem - I know a lot of people didn't like her but I do for the most part and would probably interact with the group in a similar way in most situations.
4. Nick - baby has problems with boundaries and changing himself to fit what others want him to be but I love my nasty boy even if he should be in jail.
5. Sand - I hope he's happy with Ray but I could never be like him. I would never put up with how Ray treats him and think of it as love. Too much of a pushover for me. And yeah let's not forget he participated in revenge porn which is very illegal and just an awful thing to do. All because he got dumped.
6. Ray - I hated that he didn't face consequences for his actions. The drunk driving was just brushed under the rug. He never really apologized to anyone for what he did. He always apologized but for vague things or for something other than the main offense. I hated that he got away with screaming at Mew for not having sex with him and for cheating on Mew and Mew just... made it seem like no big deal. They didn't deal with his recovery hardly at all and he was magically fixed. His story was not satisfying to me at all.
7. Boston - no this has nothing to do with him being slutty. If he had just slept around unabashedly he would probably be my 2nd or 3rd favorite but he SA Top on more than one occasion and wanted to have sex with him to "prove" he was better than Mew. He's a terrible person who didn't regret anything other than being found out.
