Maro’s Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate Teaser
Before previews for Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate officially begin, I thought it would be fun to do another of my Duelist-style teasers where I give tiny hints of things to come. Note that I’m only giving you partial information.
First up, here are some things you can expect:
• a returning mechanic that feels apropos for D&D makes use of a new card type
• a card capable of making an Ox, Boar, or Goat
• the word “seven” appears on two cards and the word “nine” appears on one
• a new legendary colorless artifact token named Volo’s Journal
• a 10/10 creature with flying and trample that you can cast for G
• a lord for Demons, Devils, Imps, and Tieflings
• the character we got a lot of complaints about not being in Adventures in the Forgotten Realms gets a card
• three legendary creatures that are Gods
• a card that enhances all creatures with mana abilities
• a spell that can copy something X times
Next, here are some rules text that will be showing up on cards:
• “This spell costs 1 less to cast for each opponent you’re attacking.”
• “That artifact becomes a 0/0 Homunculus artifact creature with flying.”
• “Whenever you cast a spell you don’t own,”
• “If you control neither creature, draw three cards.”
• “you don’t lose the game for having 0 or less life.”
• “Tokens you control have ‘T:”
• “Then choose a third player”
• “where X is the total mana value of Dragons you control.”
• “put a number of time counters on it equal to its mana value.”
• “you may cast your commander from the command zone without paying its mana cost.”
Here are some flavor words in the set:
• Devour Intellect
• Homunculus Servant
• Bigby’s Hand
• Gathered Swarm
• Avoidance
• Vicious Mockery
• Blood Drain
• Mantel of Inspiration
• Animate Chains

Finally, here are some creature type lines in the set:

Today’s recent commander sleeper is from this year’s commander legends set, and is another adventure (told you I had a soft spot for these) and it’s Recurring Nightmare at home! Ok, fine, it’s a very terrible version of recurring nightmare, but Recurring Nightmare is banned in commander, so that’s probably fine.
Altar of Bhaal is a cheap black artifact you can activate for 3 every turn to reanimate any creature from your graveyard. While it will cost you one of your existing creatures, and with an exile to avoid being able to loop a couple creatures easily across turns, it will gladly accept being fed a token every turn for constant reanimation.
The closest thing legal in Commander is probably something like Whisper (that needs two creatures) or Hell’s Caretaker, but both are fragile creatures that need to wait a turn to do their thing. This can function immediately if you have five mana and is a bit harder to remove, while still providing a lot of value.
The sorcery half is also there, a 4/1 Menace for 3 isn’t the worst deal ever, it’ll definitely get some damage in if you need it.
Overall, if your deck wants reanimation and has disposable token or nontoken bodies to spare, give this card a try for just a quarter!
