Jack & Sammy Headcanons

Okay so like if Jack said not to Joeys offer I 100% believe Sammy would’ve thrown Joey to catch up with Jack walking out the door.

Met when they were in their late and mid teens

Sammy is the younger one by 4 years but everyone thinks Jack’s younger cause he’s more laid back

Jack offered Sammy a place to live after finding out this really talented kids was couch hopping (he was too young to be rented to but lacked the social skills to ask any band members to be a roommate)

If asked Sammy insists that he moved in cause Jack needed some order in his life but was actually just super grateful to sleep on a bed between gigs

Jack is more protective of Sammy due to Sammy being a bit more “eccentric” and it’s easier to play into those and take advantage of him

Sammy is the more creative one while Jack is more technical actually, though this only applies to their craft

Jack is like Sammy’s social guidebook as Sammy doesn’t get how to talk to people outside of work or music stuff

Sammy returns the favor by being Jack’s fire (Jack gets upset but he’s an avoider, Sammy will bite)

Adhd and autism solidarity

They shared an office before Jack relocated to the sewers. Sammy was very hurt by this but let Jack have his space

Taught Jack the the violin after Jack mused about being able to still accompany Sammy when he was resting his voice

Sammy doesn’t like pickles, Jack eats the pickles off his whopper (Jack also hates pickles)

Most of there fights are about how each overstep unintentionally

Sammy doesn’t like that Jack is always straightforward with him or brings him into social settings he knows Sammy won’t be 100% comfy/knowledgeable in (bad at parties and galas, not a showboat like Jack)

Jack gets frustrated when Sammy gets closed off and nippy with either him or people that are just trying to help. Wants Sammy to understand to get better with people he has to be uncomfy sometimes.

Sammy doesn’t like to be 100% alone rather be left alone with people around, Jack luckily understands this

Sammy never learned to cook so that’s Jacks job (sam can make like pasta and eggs)

Sammy cheats on the chore chart cause he hates doing the dishes, Jack let’s him

Bi and Gay solidarity

Are so close they have like tells when each other are getting tired, upset or nervous about something

Jack starts readjusting his hat a lot and puts a hand on Sammy’s shoulder Sammy literally just shuffles closer and closer into Jack until he’s practically on top of him (literally pushes my partner until we are out the door)

Sammy doesn’t sing a lot as it calls too much attention on him, of all the studio Jack’s the only one with the bragging rights of hearing his voice (team Sammy would’ve been a killer Alice Angel /j)

Jack didn’t talk to Sammy for a week after Sammy said he was being a distraction cause that’s like the biggest Sammy insult there is

When Jack disappeared Sammy spent a lot of his after hours looking through the studio and scouring the tunnels despite the dangers

Felt guilty cause he was involved with Joey, knew what was going on and didn’t tell Jack which could’ve prevented him from going missing

Became way more irritated and mean after Jack was gone, people pretended not to notice a change (unspoken rule was to not mention Jack and Joey knew better than to suggest hiring another lyricist)

The ink along with other things promised Sammy it’d bring Jack back if he listened

After the ink sometimes Sammy tries to carry Jack back up to their office so he can chill in the pool outside the door, sadly he’s too heavy/slippery

They remember each other and Sammy gives Jack a pass on being a heretic

Sings a lot more in the ink for Jack as Jack can no longer do so

Sammy hangs out on level 2 despite the village cause he still like to be by himself but not alone, Jack still understands

They deserved better. Shout out to these two ill functioning music men

The world needs more Coffeecake content so riddle me this:

How would Jack and Sammy actually get to relationship status in your opinion? Factoring in Susie and maybe Joey, would it be an open relationship?

In the pre-BatIM timeline, with the way I tend to interpret the characters, I feel like two possible answers are “they already are,” if you figure they’re already Together in TIOL (and then Joey is the one who drives a wedge between them with the “tension” he’s picked up on, believing in it so strongly that he creates it, turning “Jack was frustrated when you did this thing one time” into “well Jack seems to find you aggravating but I appreciate you, Sammy” and vice versa until they’re practically avoiding each other at work), or “they never do,” -- Sammy aggressively isolates himself to hide how out of control everything’s gotten, and Jack tries to be accommodating and respect his need for space, and as things get worse and worse at JDS that gulf gets wider and wider.

I don’t think an... ethical open relationship is likely. Sammy isn’t talking about his relationship with Joey for a thousand reasons; I don’t think he would be open about it with a prospective partner, either. (And tbh, Sammy not wanting to get the people he cares about tangled up with Joey might contribute to his keeping them all at arm’s length).

I keep most of the coffeecake shipping for this timeline in Escape AU:

In Escape AU, Jack and Sammy’s history is closer to the “they never do” answer -- they have this deep unspoken understanding, they care so much for each other and are so comfortable in each other’s company, but their patterns are entrenched -- Sammy pushes his feelings and desires down where they can’t hurt him, Jack respects his space and doesn’t put him on the spot. They’ve been physically affectionate with each other before, but it’s always been a type of comfort, something to soothe and bring things back to normal when one or both of them are on the edge. I think… an acknowledged relationship would come when they realise that they can be affectionate when things are good, too; when it’s not desperation, but happiness. That’s outside their pattern -- wanting to hold his hand and then holding his hand because it’s nice, and you both like it. How do you do that without being afraid you don’t deserve it? How do you do that and know you’re not asking too much? How do you tell someone you want them without fearing that you’re using them? Sammy doesn’t want to hurt Jack, and Jack doesn’t want to spook Sammy, but once they can talk about it and tell each other that they want these nice moments to keep happening, that they both make each other happy, they’ll find a relationship where they’re both on the same page clicks remarkably well between them.

In Escape AU, I don’t think an open relationship is likely. Jack has been content at Sammy’s side for years and years already, after all. And for Sammy, there’d be a lot of associations to unpack with the way Joey treated him, but even setting that aside, I don’t think he’d be looking for it? Sammy keeps (mostly unconsciously) trying and trying to find someone he can safely attach himself to, someone who will protect and love him in return for his devotion. Sure, he might feel some romantic feelings for or attraction to the other men in the Escape house, but I don’t think he would wish for a more open relationship; he and Jack being together for the rest of their lives is the happiest ending he could’ve asked for.

BEHOLD. JACK DESIGNS APLENTY TO MATCH WITH THESE SAMMY DESIGNS. I had so much fun designing and drawing these guys, as I wanted to make Jacks that specifically complimented their Sammys. LONG WINDED DESIGN NOTES UNDER THE CUT

Pair 1:

i knew that i wanted to make at least one absurdly tall Jack and he was a perfect candidate

matching music tie and bowtie!!!

i love height difference sam and jacks and jack deserves to be the taller one sometimes

this Jack is probably Dominican. gotta get that latino rep in here lets gooo 💪😎 (lighthearted)

their shirts are the same shade of white which you'll see again in the third pair

iirc i wanted to give tribute to TIOL so I made this Jack orange, though I kept it leaning yellow to better compliment Sammy's blond tips

i think this Jack is the prettiest

Pair 2:

i originally wasn't planning on giving Jack dyed hair but I thought it would be cute for both of them to have it dyed since this Sammy has bleached hair like his VA. I tried to keep it subtle since he already had so much color on him that I didn't want it to look overcrowded

I love red/pink Jacks but instead of a sweater vest I gave him a normal vest since I feel like I don't see that a lot on Jacks?

i tried to lean into more mischievous vibes with him because I think more Jacks deserve to be pranksters, as a treat

he also looks chill to counterbalance a pretty high strung looking Sammy

this Jack is very very loosely inspired by someone I know irl. not really appearance wise, just through vibes

i don't think these two are dating but they are inseparable as per usual

Pair 3:

the glasses on Jack were a last minute addition because i KEEP ON FORGETTING TO GIVE CHARACTERS GLASSES

the green sweater and hat match his Sammy's green eyes (not pictured here). i like to think he does this on purpose

they both have gray hair because i think its so pretty

i think this Jack is probably the cutest

this pair is comprised primarily of soft shapes

Jack's hair is actually inspired by someone i used to know!

Misc. Notes:

i need to give more characters glasses

i forgot facial hair existed oops

i didn't set out on designing them with the intention of making the first pair both Black and the second pair both Asian, but I do think it adds something to how they operate as a pair. you gotta stick together, y'know?

in the initial sketching process i wasn't planning on drawing Sammy along with the Jacks but i realized very quickly i couldnt design them without their Sam there. they are a set! do not separate!!

this does mean that there's a scrapped Jack design sitting in that file...alone....Sammyless.... very sad. I gotta get that man a Sammy
