Esophageal cancer is a serious type of cancer that affects the esophagus, the muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. April is Esophageal Cancer Awareness Month, and it's important to understand the top 5 causes of esophageal cancer: 1. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): GERD is a condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and inflammation. Over time, this chronic exposure to stomach acid can lead to changes in the cells of the esophagus that can increase the risk of cancer. 2. Barrett's esophagus: Barrett's esophagus is a condition where the cells lining the lower part of the esophagus change and become abnormal, increasing the risk of esophageal cancer. It's commonly associated with chronic acid reflux. 3. Tobacco use: Smoking or using other tobacco products is a significant risk factor for esophageal cancer, as it can damage the DNA in cells and lead to mutations that can cause cancer. 4. Alcohol consumption: Heavy alcohol consumption can irritate and damage the lining of the esophagus, increasing the risk of cancer. 5. Poor diet: A diet low in fruits and vegetables, and high in processed, cured or red meat, has been associated with an increased risk of esophageal cancer. It's important to note that while these factors may increase the risk of esophageal cancer, not everyone who develops this disease has these risk factors. If you have concerns about your risk of esophageal cancer or have symptoms such as difficulty swallowing or persistent heartburn, it's essential to speak with your doctor to find the root cause of your health challenges. #gut #guthealth #esophagealcancer #gerd #barrettsesophagus #tobacco #chewingtobacco #alcohol #poordiet #processedfoods #preservatives #nitrates #redmeats #healthylifestyle #nutrition #diet #healthyaging #cancer #familyhistoryofcancer #functionalmedicine #preventativemedicine #drmark #therealgutdoctor

What is Diverticulosis & Diverticulitis?
Would you be surprised if we told you that Diverticulosis is a very common disease, which affects both women and men? Diverticulosis is a disease that occurs in your colon and is when small pockets or pouches form in the colon's lining.
If you are usually constipated and are 50-60 yrs. old or older, chances are that you may have it without even knowing it, as almost half of all people who are 60 or older, suffer from it.
Diverticulosis doesn’t happen often to kids or those younger than 30 yrs. old. Studies have shown that men may get it more than women.
Diverticulosis has no cure and the bad news is that it doesn't even cause symptoms at all.
So then how will you know if you have it? Most people find out by accident. They visit their doctor for something else, and then the doctor performs a routine exam of the colon, an x-ray or a colonoscopy, and that's when the doctor notices these abnormalities in your colon.
To confirm you have Diverticulosis, your doctor will:
1. Do a physical exam, which can include a digital rectal exam.
Not the most fun of exams, but with a lubricated gloved finger, he’ll gently and carefully check your anus for bleeding, pain, or other signs.
2. Check your medical history.
He’ll ask about your general health, diet, medication you take, and how often you have bowel movements.
He will probably ask you about your family history as well.
3. Perform additional tests, like:
A colonoscopy, which looks in your colon and rectum.
A CT scan, which makes images of your digestive tract.
A lower GI series, which uses X-rays to get a much better look at your large intestine.
A blood sample to show if you have any signs of inflammation or anemia.
There are a few factors that can make your more prone to developing Diverticulosis than other people:
1. Family History: If someone in your family had or has this disease.
2. Aging: In most people aging can decrease the elasticity and strength of you colon wall, which can lead to weak spots where those pouches form.
3. Constipation: This means you usually have to strain your muscles to have a bowel movement.
Now how is constipation related to Diverticulosis, you may wonder?
When your colon has to push hard, dry stools through your anus, it creates a lot of pressure in your colon.
This pressure causes weak spots in your colon's wall. Over the years, extra pressure can cause the lining of your colon to push through these weak spots, forming those pouches or pockets.
The main thing to know is that these pouches are not inflamed or infected. If your doctor determines that they are, you'll be diagnosed with Diverticulitis. So how or why will these pouches get infected in the first place?
It usually happens when a pouch is blocked by stool that's traveling through your colon to your rectum. Bacteria from the waste builds up and causes an infection.
While there are no signs at all for the majority of people when having Diverticulosis, Diverticulitis does show one common sign, which is the feeling of pain in the lower left side of your abdomen.
Different people have experienced pain in many levels. Some feel a severe pain that comes on suddenly; others experience a mild pain, which gets worst over a period of days.
Other symptoms of Diverticulitis are cramping, constipation, diarrhea, changes of bowel habits, tenderness in the abdomen, nausea, chills and even vomiting.
Not everyone who suffers from Diverticulosis will have Diverticulitis. Experts say that only about 10 to 25% of people will get it. This news is very comforting and motivating for many people, because there's a few things you can do in order to prevent Diverticulitis.
Many people get worried and assume that Diverticulosis leads to cancer. The great news is that it doesn't, however, it may lead to many other complications including inflammation, infection, as mentioned above, and bleeding or intestinal blockage - which can be painful and stressful.

Resolved. That's the term my doctor used today describing a lot of the involved lymph-nodes. Literally all that remains is shrinking or gone. The lymph-nodes that surrounded the last remaining tumor are gone and the tumor itself is shrinking with no new spots appearing. This isn't remission but it is improvement. Still fighting. Still winning. Feeling great about the news today; nothing short of thankful to be alive and on my way to remission and complete health. We plan to continue with maintenance treatment here in NYC for the foreseeable future — we're not "stuck" here, but it's the best place for us to be... for now.

Ulcerative Colitis - Tips for Leaving the House
For most people, who have just recently been diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, you know it’s a life changing disease, to say the least.
Many people can fall into depression easily. Other people can start to develop anxiety or feeling overwhelmed at all times.  And you have every right to feel like this, after all, Ulcerative Colitis can be painful, embarrassing, but mostly debilitating and unpredictable, which is not easy to handle.
One of the most common things that people say they are not comfortable doing anymore, is the simple fact of going out and leaving their home. They just want to stay home all the time...They are completely scared to leave their comfort zone.
Whether it’s going out to the supermarket, a movie theater, a dinner with friends, a baseball game, a party, etc, people worry they'll have horrible accidents, be humiliated or embarrassed.  They don't want to be seen going to the bathroom unexpectedly or too often in a small amount of time.
So people just stop hanging out with friends and even family. They stay at home all the time, and decide not to socialize anymore.  They just say good bye to their social life forever, which for many people is a large part of their life.  Who doesn't enjoy going to meet with dear friends and family and spend quality time together?
Well, closing yourself off from the outside world leads to depression and lots of negative feelings, like anger, sadness, sorrow, loneliness, disappointment, and anxiety to name a few.  And the worst part, is that when a person has emotional stress, the symptoms of having Ulcerative Colitis can get even worse.
But there's no need to give up, friend. First, did you know that almost 1 million people suffer from Ulcerative Colitis?  So know that you are definitely not alone, and there are many support groups where you can meet and talk to people who are suffering from this same disease.  All of which are going through the same symptoms and feelings as you are.
Here are some positive suggestions on how you can start living life all over again, without feeling miserable!  You won't have to miss out on all the fun or any special event in your family and friends' lives.
 1. Going to the supermarket:
Make a list at home, so you can shop faster in a more efficient way. Nowadays, you can even place an order online, meaning you don't have to spend 30min. or an hr. walking around the grocery store, and just pick it up when it’s ready. This is very convenient!
 2. Going to the movies:
•Grab seats that are on the aisle and sit on the aisle seat. You'll feel more comfortable if/when you have to get up and go to the restroom.
You can also host a movie night in the comfort of your own home or maybe have a movie night at a friend's.
•Stay away from the popcorn and pizza which most likely will be served. Bring a few healthy snacks for you, that others can enjoy as well, or simply tell your friends, that you are not feeling too well, so these are "your snacks", but you brought pizza and cake for everybody else.
 3. Dining out:
•Before having your friend’s determine a restaurant to go to, look at the menu online first and see if it’s a good fit for you.  If it is, then take the time to read what plates can work with you, so you don’t feel rushed to make a decision as you are seated at the restaurant. If by chance that restaurant doesn't have anything on their menu good for you, then don't feel bad to check out 2-3 other places, whose menu suits you best, and have your friends pick from these new options.
•Eat something you are used to eating, and that you and your body feel comfortable with, right before meeting your friend at the restaurant. This will allow you to choose a light meal from the menu, and not be so hungry, while having an enjoyable dining experience.
•Feel free to call the restaurant and ask questions about menu options. Many times, restaurants can accommodate changes, at no extra charge, for substituting this for that, as long as they offer it on their menu. For instance, the grilled chicken comes with fries, but you can always ask if they can serve you cooked vegetables instead.
•Eat smaller portions, like appetizers, as these are considered a good size. Avoid “super-sized” portions that might make you feel unwell.  However, you can eat half or 1/3 of that super-sized portion, then just take the rest home.
•Definitely, stay away from foods that don’t agree with you. Greasy or fried foods are common triggers for many people with Ulcerative Colitis.
 4. Going to a baseball game or event:
•Don't forget to get aisle seats!
•Eat a light meal you are used to eating and that you and your body are comfortable with, right before going to the game.
•Take water and snacks that you are also comfortable eating. Many events will do the exemption of allowing you to bring in healthy food/snacks IF you suffer from a medical condition and cannot eat any of the stuff they sell.
•If they don't allow you to bring in your water, their food stands do sell it.
•When you enter the event, be sure to check where the nearest 2 bathrooms are.
5. Going to a wedding or a party
Follow almost the same rules as going to a restaurant, game or event:
•Eat a light meal you are used to eating and that you and your body are comfortable with, right before going to the event.
•Take snacks that you are also comfortable eating, in case you get a bit hungry and cannot eat any of the food being served.
•If your friend's daughter is getting married, there's no need to miss it! You can choose to only attend the ceremony and if you are feeling well, then you can stay for the cocktail hour and reception.
•Ceremonies at a Church usually take 1-1.5 hrs, while ceremonies at hotels, gardens, etc. only take 30 min or less.
•If you only want to attend the ceremony, make sure to greet your friend and then sit all the way towards the back of the Church/Venue, on an aisle seat.
•Be sure to check where are the nearest 2 bathrooms - just in case.
•Stay away from alcohol and other food that won't help your body feel well.
 6. Now, what to do if you have an emergency and there are many people in the bathroom? (Like at a sporting game or restaurant)
•Don't be shy to flush as many times as needed.
•There's a small spray that we love called "poopourri", which easily fits in a purse or pants pocket, and it does wonders!  Read the instructions first, as you have to spray it ON the toilet bowl water, rather than spraying it as a mist in the air.  It’s always good to carry, even if you go to a friend's home.
We hope that with these awesome tips, you can start saying yes to many fun events in the near future and not like a prisoner in your own home.

How Inflammation relates to Digestive Disorders
In a healthy person, who’s digestive system is working properly, food moves smoothly through the digestive system and then out of the body. During that process your body absorbs all the nutrients from the food you just consumed.
But when your digestive system is suffering from inflammation, your body acts differently because it is focused on fighting that inflammation.
Overtime, if the inflammation is not addressed serious problems can occur, including but not limited to pain, cramps, sores, ulcers, constipation, diarrhea, and in some cases colon cancer.
But what leads to inflammation in the first place? And how do you know if your digestive system is inflamed?
Inflammation in your digestive system is the result of your immune system attacking a harmless bacteria, virus or food in the gut, causing inflammation that leads to a bowel injury.
Some of the most common reactions your body will have when your digestive system is inflamed is having diarrhea, abdominal cramps, abdominal pain, fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, even bloody stools.
Now did you know that there are a few diseases and disorders associated with having inflammation in your digestive system? Here's a list to the most common ones:
1. Irritable Bowel Syndrome: It is often referred as IBS. This chronic disorder affects your large intestine. Many people who suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, experience periods with few symptoms and other times symptoms improve a lot. Symptoms might even disappear, but there will be a point that they will always come back.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) does not cause changes in bowel tissue. It also does not increase your risk of colorectal cancer.
The most common symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating and cramping, which usually is somewhat relieved after passing a bowel movement. Other symptoms also reported are having excess gas and having mucus in the stool.
Having diarrhea or constipation, sometimes alternating bouts, is also very common.
2. Inflammatory Bowel Disease: It is often referred as IBD, and it affects over 3 million people.
This digestive disease involves chronic inflammation in all or some parts of your digestive tract.
It’s usually very painful and debilitating. It can also lead to life-threatening complications and increase the risk of cancer in the colon. The two most common types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) are Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn's Disease.
• Ulcerative Colitis: This happens when the inflammation occurs anywhere in your digestive track, meaning from your mouth to the anus. The most common symptoms include bloody stool or diarrhea, a frequent and urgent need to go to the bathroom and incomplete evacuation of bowel movements.
• Crohn's Disease: This happens when the inflammation occurs only in your large intestine or colon. The most common symptoms are diarrhea, sometimes with blood and abdominal pain. Patients have also reported vomiting and feeling nauseous.
3. Diverticulitis and Diverticulosis: Diverticulosis is when small pouches are formed in the inner wall of your digestive tract. When these pouches become inflamed or infected, the condition is then referred to as Diverticulitis.
The most common symptoms are lower abdominal pain, often described by patients as cramps.
Change in bowel habits, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting are also very common symptoms.
4. Gastritis: This happens when there's an irritation, inflammation or erosion of your stomach's lining. It can last for a short amount of time or for months, even years. The most common symptoms are a burning pain or ache in your upper abdomen. Sometimes it can feel better or worse after a meal. Vomiting, nausea and a feeling of fullness in the upper abdomen after eating are also very common symptoms.
5. Gastroenteritis: This happens when your stomach and intestines become irritated and inflamed after catching a virus or bacterial infection. Many people refer to this as the Stomach Flu. This causes diarrhea and vomiting. It is very common among small children especially. Other common symptoms include cramping, fever, stomach pain, nausea and headaches. Because diarrhea and vomiting happen together, it’s very important to keep well hydrated.
6. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: It is often referred as GERD. This happens when the muscle at the end of your esophagus does not close properly and it allows your stomach contents to leak back or reflux, into your esophagus causing irritation. One of most common symptoms is having the feeling of a burning sensation in your chest or throat. You can also taste stomach fluids in the back of the mouth. This is called Heartburn or acid indigestion, and many people suffer from this. Pregnant women are prone to having this disorder. Other symptoms include asthma symptoms, dry cough or trouble swallowing. It can be a long term condition.
How can Digestinol help?
Digestinol is an all-natural supplement that helps support and promote digestive health as well as support your immune system. Heartburn and Acid Reflux
Many people have heard of Heartburn and Acid Reflux. You might even know someone that suffers from it, as these conditions are pretty common. But what you might not be aware of, is that these can result in long-term serious complications.
In this article, we'll explain a little more about the seriousness of having to deal with Heartburn and Acid Reflux's complications:
 1. Esophagitis
Your esophagus is the tube that connects your throat to your stomach.
When someone suffers from Esophagitis, it means that their esophagus is inflamed, because there's constant stomach acid in their esophagus. This leads to irritations or inflammation, such as esophageal bleeding or ulcers.
When having this condition, it’s very uncomfortable to eat food and even drink liquids. People have difficulty in swallowing and it often feels like there's food stuck as you swallow. It’s also very painful. You may also feel pain in your chest when eating.
Esophagitis often leads to malnutrition and chronic scarring.
There are many types of esophagitis. A few of these include:
•Reflux esophagitis
•Cancer esophagitis
•Infectious esophagitis
•Barrett's esophagus
Treatment varies depending on the cause and your doctor may suggest surgery or medication. Lifestyle and diet changes can also benefit someone affected with this condition.
Some people have reported not having symptoms of heartburn for many, many years until new complications occur.
 2. Stricture
If your doctor determines you have esophageal stricture, it means you have an abnormal narrowing or closure in your esophagus. Those who suffer from this condition, usually have the same symptoms as having esophagitis, other symptoms include regurgitation of foods. We need food and liquids in order to survive, and when you have trouble and pain during the swallowing process, as you can imagine, it becomes extremely frustrating.
The main treatment for esophageal stricture is a procedure called dilation. This is when your esophagus is stretched by the use of an air-balloon or multiple dilators that are passed through an endoscope.
While many doctors are confident performing this procedure, there's always the risk of complications.
These complications include the perforation or bleeding on your esophagus.
Also, if your doctor recommends this procedure, he or she will also inform you that within the first year, about a 30% of patients come back to have this procedure done again.
 3. Barrett's esophagus
The term of Barrett's esophagus comes from the Australian-born surgeon, Norman Rupert Barrett, who for most of his career, worked as a consultant surgeon at the St. Thomas Hospital in London.
So what does this condition mean?
It refers to a change in the cells that make up the lining of your esophagus.
This makes your esophagus more vulnerable to developing cancer in some people.
Barrett's esophagus is more common in people who are around 60 yrs. old. Now, don't become alarmed just yet - studies show that the risk of developing cancer in your esophagus is less than 1 percent per year, so it’s rather small.  Also, men seem to be more affected by this than women.
In order to confirm if you have Barrett's esophagus, your gastroenterologist will suggest an upper-GI endoscopy. Patients diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus have to be monitored with periodic surveillance endoscopies and biopsies. Many patients that were diagnosed with this condition didn't suffer from heartburn or other symptoms at all.
If you or someone that you know, are having the symptoms below, it is extremely important that you pay a visit to a doctor immediately. These symptoms include:
•Having chest pain
•Having difficulty in swallowing
•Passing black, tarry or bloody stools
•Vomiting red blood or blood that looks similar to coffee grounds
How can Digestinol help?
Digestinol is an all-natural supplement that helps support and promote digestive health as well as support your immune system. Its biggest benefit is the ability to target and reduce inflammation within your digestive system. Inflammation along your digestive system is one of the main reasons for pain/discomfort associated with digestive disorders. It can help with both constipation as well as diarrhea, because it gets your body back to normal so the amount of fluid in your colon is regulated the way it should be.
What is Digestinol?
Our product contains AMP (Aloe Mucilaginous Polysaccharides) which is an all-natural molecule found in the aloe vera plant. It is known to enhance the body’s immune system due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. We have a 97-98% success rate reported from people who take Digestinol as directed for 90 days or longer.
If you are not interested in prescription medications to treat your condition and prefer a more natural approach, Digestinol makes all-natural capsules that contain a very specific form of Aloe Polysaccharides to target the inflammation along your digestive tract.
These capsules also provide your body with the nutrients that it is lacking in order to take back control of itself. Digestinol isn't just Aloe Vera powder, Aloe Vera (contains Aloin) which irritates your digestive system and can cause diarrhea. Digestinol undertakes very specific additional steps in order to remove the Aloin during their extraction process to focus on only the beneficial portions of the Aloe Leaf, the long chain Aloe Mucilaginous Polysaccharide molecules.
Since Digestinol is 100% all-natural it doesn't bring along the side effects that other chemically based prescription medications have. We tell our customers to think of Digestinol as an all-natural digestive system specific vitamin that reduces inflammation and provides your body with specific nutrients that allow it to take back control of itself.
Our Digestinol capsules will also help to balance the good and bad bacteria levels in your body allowing it to regain control of its normal operations.
