"It’s over, Klint... I know the truth, I know everything that happened...”
Barok was sat in his brother’s tomb, looking at the stone where Klint’s name was engraved carefully in marble and painted with gold leaf.
“... I know you were the Professor... that Stronghart was manipulating you ... that Genshin granted you an honourable death...” even as he said the words, it all came welling back. The wild ride of emotion and disbelief that had consumed him during the trial. It was still difficult to come to terms with, but it was the truth and he was grateful to have it at long last.
“And, I know that you wanted me to be able to proceed with my career as a Prosecutor without being weighed down by your deeds... it seems even until the last moments of your life, you were trying to shield me from the world. Yet, more than anything, I’d have liked to have known what you were going through and to have helped you if I could... you were selfish brother.”
He hung his head, the lump in his throat was heavy and hard to breathe around, “... But...” he took a deep breath and closed his eyes; tears were trailing down his face as he whispered, “You asked for my forgiveness, and I just wanted to come here to let you know: you have it... I still believe you did what you thought was right, and even if that was misguided and your deeds were wrong... I cannot hate you for trying to make a difference. I will always be sad that you took this sadness and suffering to your grave without giving me a chance to stand by your side... but I forgive you.”
It felt like a weight had been lifted as he stood up and bowed before his brother’s burial place, “I’m intending to move forward with my life, Klint. I’m not going to be held back in the darkness of my mind, quietly wishing that you weren’t dead... I know you’re gone; I know you’re not the reaper, holding me in your arms with a grim cowl of deathly judgment. You’ve passed on -- whatever that truly means -- and I only pray that you’re at peace where ever you are...”
As he left the crypt and closed it over, he took another deep breath and exhaled slowly. Closing this door felt symbolic – like he was finally letting go of the pain of the past and the stagnation that had held him hostage for over ten years now.
He was free, at last, from the pain and anger that had been slowly consuming him like an insidious poison, and it was all thanks to that impressive young man from Japan.
The debt of gratitude he owed was great, and all he could do to repay it was move forward with his life and reflect upon all that had happened with a view to being a better man in the future. It was a hopeful thought, something that had felt distinctly absent up until now.

Here are some headcanons about the ways in which Klint has protected Barok!
Content Warnings: angst; some GAA spoilers
Whenever they’re in London for Klint’s work in the Prosecutor’s Office, he keeps a careful eye on his little brother and makes sure that thugs who have a problem with him don’t take it out on Barok. He’s not always successful in stopping the attacks from happening -- but he never lets them touch a hair on the boy’s head.
He’s turned down more opportunistic marriage arrangements from members of the aristocracy than he cares to remember. Barok is not a piece of meat up for trade to the most promising bidder; the idea of him choosing Barok’s future partner is utterly ridiculous and offensive to Klint. It should (and will) be his little brother’s choice.
In addition to watching out for criminals on the streets, Klint keeps a careful eye on the people he employs and interrupts any attempts to poison himself (and Barok by extension). He won’t let his little brother be harmed because of who he is, so he’s taught him to take extra precautions when it comes to accepting food and drink from others.
Klint also made sure that Barok was well-instructed in the sword from a young age. As much as he wanted to be able to protect his little brother all by himself, he’s not arrogant enough to presume that he’s capable of such. So, he was keen to ensure that Barok is able to protect himself.
To that end, he occasionally pounces on his brother when they’re at home so that Barok is used to thinking quickly and responding as appropriate. (To his surprise, Barok has started doing the same to him, so he needs to be equally ready to protect himself!)
Finally, he tried to protect his brother’s future by keeping him out of his affairs. The last thing he ever wanted was to impede his brother’s ability to thrive in life and society; while he may not always have been successful in that regard, Klint’s desire to protect his brother runs deep and has been mostly effective.
