ok i gotta drop probably my hottest take:

TotK is such a mid game. I don't know how it happened, but it took 6 years to make what really ended up as just a romhack of BotW? Like I'm pretty easy to please with Zelda but it just... Doesn't iterate on BotW in any notable way? It doesn't have any identity that is unique to it, they just... Put more content on it without fixing the actual problems BotW? It doubles down on overly simple shrines that end in 3 minutes, it doubles down on short, simple dungeons, and they just put it all on the same exact map. The sky islands, the depths, and zonai devices are nice and all but they don't make the game much better, because the core experience is the same, good but flawed BotW experience that we had enough of 5 years ago. And it's so sad because it feels like it totally evades criticism of these things. It has the highest amount of perfect scores EVER on metacritic. For serious. It really really makes me worry that nintendo will learn the wrong lessons from TotK and the next Zelda will be on the same Hyrule map with 5000 shrines with 1 puzzle in it, just with the ability to make a fully functioning gameboy advance sp on that map
