North Long Beach is a pretty strange place at times. The ugly cousin to the glitz, pomp and circumstance of Downtown. A ragged stretch of run down industrial buildings and decrepit parking lots, called home to those unable to afford to live elsewhere. Sandwiched in between these sad lots sits a small white building with a leprechaun adorning the cracked plastic sign at it’s roofline.This bar, Muldoon’s Saloon, has been a local neighborhood dive and community watering hole since 1973. 

My client put up a capital investment and together with a partner, purchased the bar from the previous ownership in fall of 2016. He had high hopes for the place. “North Long Beach is gonna get hit with a wave of gentrification over the next five years,” he would tell me, “the residents here have no idea... but I just got out of a meeting with the city counselor, and man! It’s gonna be on the up and up!” he chattered excitedly in explanation. “Now, about the logo...”

“Make it a leprechaun,” he said. “A grinning hipster leprechaun!” 

And there you have it folks. Graphic Design. Boom! A bar was born refreshed. The logo wound up getting painted one of the walls as a mural, as well. I’d recommend a visit here for a beer, with the following caveat: If you are into an authentic irish dive bar scene, all the colorful characters and atmosphere there will have you loving the place. If you prefer not to rub elbows with those types, and like your cocktails fancy, it’s probably not the spot for you.

Instructions: 1. Lie flat on the back in the shava-asana (the corpse pose). 2. Inhale through the nostrils. Place the palms face-down on the floor. Keeping the hips on the floor, bend the knees and bring them up toward the stomach while exhaling. 3. Inhale, then while exhaling, raise the legs straight up perpendicular to the floor. You may support your hips with your hands or leave the arms flat on the floor, whichever is most comfortable. 4. Exhale and continue to raise the legs over the head, bending at the waist, lifting the back and buttocks until the toes touch the floor directly in back of the head. Keep the feet together. If the lower back is supported by the hands try returning the arms flat to the floor with the palms facing down. If you are unable to comfortably place the arms on the floor continue to support the lower back with the hands. 5. Keep the knees straight. Breath slowly through the nostrils and hold the posture for several minutes. If you cannot touch the floor with your toes hold them as close to the floor as possible and continue to exert effort to lower them. 6. Reverse the steps to return to the shava-asana. Duration/Repetitions: Hold the hala-asana for as long as you are comfortable. 20-30 seconds is fine for early attempts, increase the time gradually as you become more comfortable. Cautions/Restrictions: The hala-asana should not be performed by the woman who is menstruating, as is the case with all inverted postures (where the legs are raised over the head).
