Recording Shada in 2002.
From DWM 330, May 2003:
PAUL MCGANN
INTERVIEW BY GARY GILLATT
We first spoke in Vancouver in 1996…
[sings] Ah yes, I remember it well…
…And here we are in Bristol, years later, with James Fox and Andrew Sachs. Would you ever have thought it?
Well, when my agent was telling me about it, I thought we had a bad line. She said, ‘James Fox is in it, and Andrew Sachs, and so-and-so and such-and-such’ and I assumed I was mishearing. I mean, how could it be?
Were you familiar with the work of Douglas Adams?
Not really, only Hitchhiker’s Guide. I’m not a sci-fi reader at all, that’s not my thing. I didn’t really know a great deal about Adams – I certainly didn’t realise he was this amazing polymath. But Lalla speaks so eloquently and passionately about him, and I’ve come to understand why he was so well-loved and respected, and, of course, the quality of the script speaks for itself.
Are you enjoying playing the script?
Well, compared to last year’s plays, and the year before, you can definitely tell it’s from a different source. It has a different tack, and a whole different kind of wit. If you were at a blind tasting, and shown just a page or two of every script we’ve done, you’d easily spot that this one came from somewhere else, from a very fertile mind. It’s great stuff.
Everyone seems to have treated the script with great respect. Almost every line seems to be debated as you all try to get the best of out it.
Comedy is a very serious business. If it was a so-called straight drama, you probably wouldn’t find that much discussion.
So it’s exacting work?
Oh yes, very much so. If a thing is meant to be funny, you’ve got to make sure it’s funny, so you’ve got to get it right. In drama, your main directions are ‘quicker’, ‘slower’, ‘louder’, ‘quieter’. But on something like this you have to watch how you spin every word. It’s not something you can be lazy about.
I hear you’re missing India Fisher…
I sure am. Every time the studio door opens, I think she’s going to walk through. It’s the association with this place, where we do all these plays, and this is the first one we’ve done without her, so it seems very strange. She’ll be back next year, though, won’t she?
I certainly hope so. Will you?
Well, yes, that’s in the planning stages. Apparently, as was revealed to me yesterday, 2003 is the 40th anniversary of Doctor Who, and they’re planning something of a special with me and Davison and Sylv and Colin Baker. I think they’re going to have us as some sort of barbershop quartet or something.
So you’re still finding it fun, being the Doctor?
You sound very sure of yourself when you ask that… You’ve phrased the question to get the answer you want, I think!
Well, I guess as a fan, I’d like to think that Doctor Who likes being Doctor Who…
Well, I’ll put your mind at rest, then, because I am still enjoying it. I like working on audios more than on screen. Day in, day out, it’s just more of a laugh. Doing the visual work, on TV or in pictures, you never get to hang around with the rest of the cast. Here we can swap stories in the green room, or go off in a gang to the pub for lunch. When you’re working on pictures it’s not like that. You go in, do your little bit, and then you’re shunted off to a trailer out of the way. This is much more fun. It’s what being an actor is all about, and I have Doctor Who to thank for that opportunity.
Extracts from the recording of Shada:
The Doctor decides it’s time to get to the point. “What have you done with the Professor’s mind?” he asks.
“It will be put to a more useful purpose,” replies Skagra, haughtily.
“I would argue that it was serving a very useful purpose where it was.” ”Not to me.”
“You realise he died?” says the Doctor.
“Only his mind was of use to me,” says Skagra. “Not his life.”
“You take a very proprietorial attitude to people’s brains,” responds the Doctor, calmly.
“It seems to me,” says Skagra, his voice rising slightly, “that the Time Lords take a very proprietorial view of the Universe.”
There is a pause.
“Hold on,” says Lalla Ward, looking across the room to Nick, the director. “Surely the Doctor would be more accurate about his reference there. Skagra hasn’t stolen the Professor’s brain, only his mind.”
“That’s right,” agrees Andrew Sachs, dropping his thin, high Skagra voice. “The actual brains stay in their heads, don’t they?”
“It’s a good point,” replies Nick. “I imagine that Douglas was trying to avoid repetition of the word ‘mind’.”
“Well Douglas should have known better,” says Lalla, firmly. “And it’s a bit silly to worry about repetition of the word ‘mind’ now. It’s all ‘I want your mind, I want his mind’ for the next 60 pages.”
“So would you like me to change ‘brain’ to ‘mind’ on that line?” queries Paul McGann. “Because, y’know, I think the Doctor would be far more accurate about his reference there.”
—-
The Krag commander growls its greeting to Skagra. “What are your orders, my Lord?”
Andrew Sachs peers over his script. “Cod and chips twice, please. And a carton of mushy peas.”
—-
Paul McGann is recording assorted screams and moans to signify the Doctor’s mistreatment by Skagra’s mind-sucking sphere. “Argh!” he groans, “Aargh…ugh…aaargh!”
“Thanks, Paul,” says Nick. “That’s just brilliant.”
“Three years at RADA for that!” laughs Paul gleefully. “Would you like me to do some more?”
Nick smiles and turns to Andrew Sachs. “Now could we just do your lines as the sphere attacks the Doctor again?” Andrew nods and clears his throat. “This time, Doctor,” sneers the icy voice of Skagra, “This time no one will come to your rescue. I shall have your mind.” It’s chilling stuff.
“Y’know,” says Paul, “I believe you!”
“Poor Skagra,” says Andrew. “I have the feeling he’s a very lonely man. I think he needs a wife and kids. A talking spaceship’s no real substitute for the love of a good woman, is it?”
—-
Skagra has some seriously sexy transport, and the Doctor is stealing it.
“Ship!” shouts the Doctor. “Activate all re-aligned drive circuits.”
“Something very strange is happening,” says the ship, all sultry sibilance.
“Ta-daa!” cheers the Doctor.
Hannah Gordon is in a separate sound booth. “Should I be getting more roused there?” she asks over the loudspeaker.
“I don’t think so,” says Nick. “Just keep it honey-voiced and seductive.”
In the gallery, artist Lee Sullivan crosses his legs. “I don’t think I can take much more,” he says. “I may have to leave the room. I never found myself attracted to a spaceship before!”
In the studio, Sean Biggerstaff is fidgeting with his headphones. “It’s very strange working with a sexy, disembodied voice in your ear,” he says.
“I can’t see any downside to that,” muses Paul.
“Hey, that’s me you’re talking about,” replies Hannah in a sexy, disembodied way.
—-
An invisible spaceship,” smiles Lalla. “Such a brilliant idea from Douglas.”
“And now we have an invisible spaceship on audio,” adds Paul.
“Douglas would have laughed at that. It’s just so marvellously perverse.”
“Shall we go and explore it?”
“Oh, yes, let’s explore…”

Mini Review - The Blackening (2023)
Tumblr media
i really like it (high tier?) 🤔
Quite a Black-ass funny-ass horror, but much more of an interesting Black movie than a horror. Like, the main horror is in the racist murderer at a cabin in the woods. Like,... I'm not even gonna explain that. You either get it or you don't. Which brings me to the main thing I wanna say. This really is for Black people. I wouldn't recommend it for people who aren't in some way "Black" (biracials, getcha ass in here).
I'm serious when I say this isn't for Euros. Like, y'all really shouldn't* watch this unless you were out of the blue invited by Black people or are yourself very involved with Blackness in some way. (whatever dafuq that means) Should full-on Euros who have no actual exposure to Blackness see this movie? Absolutely not. Everything's dangerous in the wrong hands, and some of y'all asses are gonna do the absolute wrong shit with this. Intentionally or not.
*Pre-Edit: I heard a room of Black people (including some cast members) completely disagree with me in Way Up With Angela Yee’s video (timestamped).
Now that I'm done talking to the non-Blacks, let's get on with it.
for the African Descended
Tumblr media
Y'all, this some shit. God damn. So glad I just happened to see this in a small theatre filled to a third with mostly Afros. Got to enjoy the reactions almost as much as the movie. Is it great, though? As a Black movie, yeah. As a horror movie, nah. As a Black horror, yep. As a Black comedy horror, hell yeah. And to be real, I don't think non-Black reviews/opinions/criticisms should even be taken into account for this one. Like, I read 7 recent reviews on Letterboxd before getting to Darryl Buckhanan's and seeing all the convincing I needed. This ain't for everybody. And I'm glad it ain't. Let ma ass be. Real talk,... how many o'y'all would'a failed that shit? 💀
Real talk, I didn't trust this movie to not be for Euros because of the director (Tim Story). Here me out! Of his 23 movies listed on Letterboxd, I've only seen five: Barbershop (2002), Fantastic Four (2005), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), Think Like a Man (2012) (they just had to put Rihana’s abuser in this 🙄), and this one. While I enjoyed all of the other four, I 1) haven't seen his other Black-casted works and 2) strongly suspected Shaft (2019) of being made for Euros everytime I saw its preview in theatres. Never bothered to confirm that suspicion, but I don't feel the need to. Fortunately, that review convinced me of this one and I saw it yesterday.
Side Notes:
Would not recommend watching 3Peat Presents: The Blackening - Uncensored before the movie if you're already interested. If you ain't, then go ahead and ask yourself if you want a feature length film inspired by this 4 minute Comedy Central skit. (the answer is yes)
Already saw it and interested in hearing some of the cast and crew talk about it? Here ya go:

The Cast Of 'The Blackening' Speaks On Creating A Horror Film From The Black Perspective + More - Breakfast Club Power 105.1 FM
Waitin' for my favorite Afro streamers to talk about The Blackening. fuckers better come on
Happy Juneteenth, mofos
Pre-Edit: I realized while listening to interviews and doing my Crew Data that this movie probably won't fully succeed unless Euros watch it too. That’s the business side of it. I’m speaking on more of a personal matter in comparison. meh 🤷🏿‍♂️ Shortly after typing the above, I heard a room of Black people (including some cast members) completely disagree with me in Way Up With Angela Yee’s video (timestamped).
Tests:
I’m gonna skip 4 crew tests and hold off on posting Crew Data for now. Here’s the test process for the other 16, though.

Don’t Let the Night Crumble
under 1k words
five teleports to the apocalypse. this is how he reacts to his world. prompt given by my friend!
pretty shitty because my brain is dead but HEY I ACTUALLY FINISHED A PROMPT FOR ONCE SO ILL TAKE IT WHO CARES
tagging the gang since no one seems to see my writing otherwise: @conchshell, @stupidcanofpeaches, @assaily, @jbd302020, @kofdangerblog, @burnmyself (hi yall! sorry to bother you but if i dont tag you this post will literally get eaten alive)
tws for mentions of gore and injuries
Dust.
That’s the first thing Five registers when he appears in… where is he?
His town- his block- the world as he knew it-
It’s all gone.
Gone is the corner store he and  Diego used to go to to get their candy, gone is the barbershop that Allison took him to once, gone is the concert hall and the liquor store and the bookshop and the vinyl place.
It’s all reduced to rubble, crumbling tan dust and red, and Five’s breath shortens, and he’s panting now because he just up and left his family, and they’re alone with his father back in 2002, and he is here, and they are probably dead.
What happened?
Where are his siblings? Surely they might have survived- they were- are, Five reminds himself- the Umbrella Academy, and if anyone would have survived, it would be them. He can’t give up on them. He can’t.
They’re all he has left.
Fast, fast, as fast as his legs can carry him, Five runs, runs back to the academy, his home, his only home.
The academy, like the rest of the world, is ashy grey brown and crumbled. Five sinks to his knees.
There’s no way anyone could have survived that.
Five clenches his fists, trying to tug on the familiar blue glow, but his hands betray him, quivering like a deer, and the mirage of hope fades away and there is nothing else he can do. Nothing else he can think of.
“Come on,” he says, almost hyperventilating, and his mind is crazy, saying you can’t do it, you’re not good enough, you’ll never be good enough, this is your fault. It’s your fault they’re all dead. His mind speaks in the voice of his father. Five can almost see his smirk. The menacing glint of the monocle.
The disappointment.
The blue glow weakly wrapping around his fists and Five panics, because this is his only way out, and if he can’t do this, what can he do?
The blue flickers and Five says “Shit,” and he thinks he’s crying but who cares because he’s out here alone anyway and there’s no one to see.
Even if there was anyone, who would care?
The academy- the academy, his home. It’s in shambles.
Five picks his way across the rubble, and then he sees his first body.
A gloved hand, sticking out of the debris, clutching an object like a lifeline. Five wanders over.
It’s Luther, he realizes- same hulking figure and blond hair, although it’s shorter now and he’s larger, much larger, hidden and wreathed in an olive green trench coat.
Five wonders what caused his brother to be like this- cold, dead, unfeeling.
He pries his hand open, wincing as he breaks his brother’s fingers- they’re stiff, bloated. The grip Luther has on the thing in his hand is as tight as a vice.
Finally, he uncovers it. It’s an eye.
Luther’s arm lies dead and broken on the rubble.
It’s not worth it. All it was was an eye. Just a plain, brown plastic eye, he broke his brother’s fingers to get an eye.
Even if Luther is dead, it’s not worth it.
Maybe the eye belongs to the person who ended the world. Maybe he can travel back and kill this person. In a brutal, horrifying way.
The tears fall freely, but Five stays silent. Water drops down onto his shorts, staining them- valuable water. Water he can use.
He tries, but he can’t stop the tears.
Luther can’t be the only one. If he’s dead- the strongest of the siblings- the others must be too.
The thought makes Five’s blood boil.
This is his fault.
It’s HIS FAULT.
It’s his fault they’re dead.
Finally, finally, he screams, the release of pent up anger and frustration and pain, and he screams and it’s a ragged sound, full of the knowledge that his siblings are dead and he is alone in this sad world, empty but for only the rubble of those dead.
Five scrambles up, scraping his knees on the brick- they’re bloody now, to match the blood on his hands from the eye and his dead brother. Quickly, too quickly he runs, trying to find a point in the rubble.
Diego.
This is not how Diego is supposed to look. He’s not supposed to be ashy grey, with hair shorter than Ben’s, and his skull is not supposed to be caved in. There’s a bloody dent in it, which Five assumes is what killed him.
Two of his brothers dead- there’s no way the others survived.
He finds Allison’s body next, near Klaus’s- Five notes that she has a bandage wrapped around her throat, stained with blood. He wonders if that’s how she died.
Klaus appears fine, if not ashy, and there’s no way to tell what killed him.
But the point is, they’re all dead, and Five no longer has anything to live for.
He can’t be quiet and so he screams again. There’s no one to hear.
If you scream and no one’s there, did you really scream at all?

Eve's Eve-Olution Album Anniversary
Eve-OlutionEve next set about establishing a movie career; she made her box-office debut in the Vin Diesel action blockbuster XXX, which was released in the summer of 2002. Not long after, she was also seen in a prominent supporting role in the Ice Cube comedy Barbershop. Amid all this activity, Eve released her third album, Eve-Olution, in August 2002. It debuted in the Top Ten and found Eve returning to the soul singing of her youth on a surprising number of tracks. The single "Gangsta Lovin'," which featured guest vocals from Alicia Keys, was a number two smash on both the pop and R&B charts, and the follow-up "Satisfaction" was nominated for a Grammy. In early 2003, Eve signed with the UPN network to produce and star in a multiracial sitcom about a fashion designer, and she continued acting in movies, with roles in Barbershop 2, The Cookout, and The Woodsman. A full return to music was attempted in 2007 with Here I Am, an album featuring productions from Swizz Beatz, Timbaland, and Pharrell, but after a couple singles were serviced to radio, the album was shelved by Eve's label Interscope. A starring role in the film Whip It and a recurring character on the television show Glee kept her busy until 2013 when Lip Lock landed. The album featured guest shots from Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliot, and Juicy J, and was released by Eve's label, From the Rib. Read more about Eve here.

Eurovision 2002 - Number 13 - U.F.O. - "Mon du falder ned"
youtube
U.F.O is a one man band and that man is Kristian Humaidan here wearing something warm. U.F.O stands for Ung Funky Opkommen (Young, Funky, Upcoming) which is not a name that's going to stand the test of time.
Kristian is a mainly a rapper, and 2002 is his breakthrough year. He's not only at Dansk MGP, he will go on to win the annual Danish MCs fight night later, an annual freestyle rap battle. Think a politer, and far more Danish, 8 Mile. There's not doubting his stage presence - he definitely know how to work a camera and a crowd.
First he's here trying to get into Eurovision with Mon du falder ned (Are you Falling Down?) which allows him to demonstrate that not only can he rap, Kristian can sing. It's notably for being just a bit sweary and profane, with interesting lyrics about checking your progress through life to make sure you're on the right track, and not letting your own ego trip you up. There's some good play with metre and use of language in there, brought in from the rap experience he has.
It's got some stand out vocal sections both for Kristian himself, but also for the backing trio who during the bridge break into a barbershop/beatbox section that works well to punctuate the song, before launching into a key change and air-punching moment prior to the clap-along final chorus.
The crowd do love it. I'd have to guess it's second-in-the-running-order slot and the more challenging that usual language left the televoters cold and this become one of the five songs knocked out prior to the final. It stands up well in retrospect. It feels less than usually Danish.
U.F.O. did go on to other things. He formed a duo with another rapper UFO Yepha, had several hits, worked with other singers in collaborations before switching to his own name in 2011 (no longer young nor upcoming, probably still funky). There were a couple of albums post 2011 as well as fatherhood and continues to work as a producer.

Ray, Leslie Johns, "Under the Blow Dryer: A Study of Three Fictional Beauty Shops" (2011). Honors Theses. 2403. https://egrove.olemiss.edu/hon_thesis/2403
"The authors allow outsiders a look at an exclusive space, which allows readers or viewers to see the opportunities women have to create more than hairstyles in the beauty shop. The beauty parlor creates an isolated world of its own that outsiders can view through popular fiction, drama, and film. Larger sociopolitical problems, be it a[n economic] depression, segregation, or [the] feminist movement, can be marginalized or contested within the walls of the beauty parlor."
-- note: the role of beauty parlors as a third space
edit: Beauty Shop (2005) is itself a spinoff of another (hilarious) third-space oriented film, Barbershop (2002). I loved Barbershop's exploration of a white character who is rather seamlessly part of an environment that he is (racially) very different from.
