BAFTA Game Awards: Sam Lake, Performer in a Supporting Role nominee!?
Y'know what I love about Sam when he went all in for AW2? Is that he took it seriously to be the actor so he can parallel it to the actor Sam. To prove that he can be an actor in the real world and not just a fantasy he wrote and even pushing further to play 4 roles (+1 if we include Scratch) for the game. Stretching himself thin as far as his metanarrative goes. For the sake of love and passion to tell the story that means a lot for creatives and everyone else. He's insane for that /gen /pos.
With BAFTA game awards coming this April, we understand that the awarding system is a whole can of worms. Ilkka, Matt, Sam, James, Melanie, and Martti being longlisted for their respective roles were recognised by the system but got crossed out leaving Sam the only one to reach the top. The sad thing is if they're all nominated, they're still going to compete with each other. That will muddy the waters. It's the harshest reality we have to face and that alone requires the awarding system to be reexamined. Not that there's no hope anymore, perhaps one day the system will change for the better, for the sake of actors and the like. I really hope so. I really do.
It's a lucky shot that Sam's nominated for Supporting Role, I don't think anyone (even himself) would ever believe that an amateur like him will compete with the rest of the professionals.
And IF Sam wins, which is going to be one hell of a news at Remedy, I won't survive when I listen to his acceptance speech cos knowing him, he will dedicate it to James. It's the best he can do for his friend and colleague who worked hard and contributed equally as he did for their Alex Casey.
I won't expect too much for Sam to win however, looking at how difficult it is with other big names on the list, but it's always worth hoping for... Crossing fingers. I hope he gets it.... Because that award will help bring light to the cast of AW2. For Ilkka, Matt, Melanie, Martti, everyone involved in the game and live action sequences..... and most of all, for James.
And whatever the results may be.
We just have to brace ourselves.

I've seen a lot of fanart of Astarion dressed like this. This is from the BAFTA Games Awards 2024 event where Neil Newbon, his interpreter, wore this costume. 🖤

Vampire Survivors Game Of The Year? Bollocks
So apparently a game which resembles the 1981 arcade game Robotron 2084 except with worse graphics is the best game of the last twelve months according to BAFTA:
Better than whatever the latest God Of War thingy is or whatever Heavy Metal fan fantasy life simulator is doing the rounds?
Better than Stray?
Nope, fact is Vampire Survivors is yet another tired Robotron 2084 clone, and FORTY TWO YEARS LATER it is beyond lame.
Bumnuggets like PC Gamer have been responsible for much of this bullshit for some time, plugging 8 bit shit in a 64 bit age and praising it to the skies like it's the Second Coming 'just because old skool is better maaaaaaaaan.' rather than it being middle ages hacks trying to relive their 'yoof', or pretentious basement dwellers doing the gamers' equivalent of people who buy only music on indie labels as some sort of avant-garde statement.
You know, the sort that used to drone on about The Smiths until Morrissey turned into Alf Garnett in middle age.
No, a game doesn't have to be all singing all dancing flashy graphics if done right - evidence for the prosecution is the beautifully eerie Limbo.
But praising retro for retro's sake is fooling no one but yourselves.
