masterpost of all the times nitro+chiral has referenced their own games! made bc i was bored and i like epic nitro+chiral references
Tumblr media
also includes references to other nitroplus games, if there are any refs i missed please feel free to add to the post or lmk and i will add them!
Togainu No Chi references
to start out is the bgm playing in slow damage! credits to this channel called L on youtube for the recording, they also uploaded other vids of n+c bgm being in surodame so shoutout to a real one bc im about to use all of their vids for this post
youtube
haunt, shifty, and tactics play in the restaurant!
this next one is not exactly confirmed to be a reference but I always felt like the re:code virus and trip ending cg was a homage to Kau
Tumblr media Tumblr media
like??? THE OUTFITS LOOK KINDA SIMILAR IDK!!! i like to think that it is! and considering the fact that honyarara (dmmd artist) was a togainu no chi fan, i wouldnt be surprised if the similarities were intentional
Tumblr media
Lamento references
to my knowledge there is not a lot of lamento refs in the other games, but like togainu no chi, lamento's bgm is also in slow damage!
youtube
kowaku, kaze ga huku machikado, and ketsui (? the last one is a lil hard to hear but it sounds like ketsui) play in the cafe!
Sweet Pool references
this reference is one i was NOT aware of at all until very recently, so credit to @/slybluehologhost for pointing it out! and for the screenshots if they are yours! their post was the one i found this out from lmao
the CG of one of the first rhyme fights in dramatical murder, is a corrupted version of the Okinaga household cg from sweet pool!
Tumblr media
here is the original CG. if you notice it's using 3d resources, something that dmmd didn't actually have a lot of as backgrounds. the reason is because it's leftovers from the previous game!
Tumblr media
if you look at the CG flipped, you can see clearly that it is the Okinaga household living room/kitchen!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in my opinion this is one of the coolest refs on this post. bc i played dmmd before every other n+c game, i genuinely didn't notice this when i first played. its something that only people who played sweet pool would notice, and i just find that so nice! just a lil easter egg for people who know
sweet pool bgm is also present in slow damage!
youtube
scene [warp02], chills02, and calm01 play in the bar!
another ref in slow damage is the billboard with youji official art on it
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
prolly my fav official art of youji ever
Dramatical Murder references
dmmd's bgm is featured in slow damage!
youtube
track 10, 12, and the video says bgm 22 but i cant rly hear anything? idk regardless the bgm plays when you go to beat up that guy who likes to get beat up by his brother for some reason LOL
another very very small reference that is extremely easy to miss is the fact that clear's nendoroid is in Mayu's room
Tumblr media
if you zoom in on the parts i circled, you can see that the nendoroid box says 597. and nendoroid 597 just so happens to be the clear nendo!
Tumblr media
under the cut are other nitroplus title refs! (also didnt wanna make this post look too long fndskgjn)
Other Nitroplus title references
Mayu's room is FULL of Nitroplus title references. so much that some of them I didn't really recognize besides the obvious, so i literally had to just go through the character lists on nitroplus games to find what characters they were. ur welcome for this incoming information that you may or may not have known
Tumblr media
probably one of the most recognizable nitroplus characters in this room is saya from saya no uta, mayu has a figure of her in the middle! (theres more boxes of her but this was the most noticeable imo)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
his figure display has many nitroplus characters on it
Tumblr media
to start from the top, the one in the long maid like dress is Petrushka from Kikokugai - The Cyber Slayer
Tumblr media
Next to her is Franco il Nero from Zoku Satsuriku no Django
Tumblr media
i couldnt find anything for who's next to this chara, so i assume its just swimsuit versions of the character Mayu's obsessed with
Going to the 2nd row, though you can just barely see her, i found this character to be Echika from Tokyo Necro
Tumblr media
Next (disregarding the obvious figures in between) to her are the two main characters from You and Me and Her, Aoi Mukou and Sone Miyuki!
Tumblr media
i find it a little funny that they would put these references in because the audience for the people playing nitroplus games vs the audience playing n+c games are like VERY different but nonetheless, pretty cool!
while not a "reference" per se, sweet pool is heavily inspired by saya no uta!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is something thats just a generally agreed fact, but i felt compelled to include it anyway because i rly love both of these vns and i love rambling abt them. theyre very similar in the ways that they both got meat n gore, and the main characters dealing with the meat n gore, and the general theme of just isolating yourself from people because of it and not exactly having a happy end. fuminori completely giving up his outside life for saya, destroying friendships n whatnot, and youji locking himself in his room and shutting out people who aren't dealing w his lil problem (makoto). the ending where saya wins and the red road ending shares some vibes imo. its all very similar even down to the soundtrack that had some of the same people working on it, and even gen urobuchi himself (writer of saya) worked on sweet pool as an advisor. so in my head its canon that these two games r brother and sister
thats pretty much it! (unless i decide to add more i swear theres probably so much im missing LMAO) thank you if you read this far ^_^
edit: check notes for other references people have added!

screenshot saturday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so uhh
this'll be a short one
sorryyyyyyy
I DO HAVE STUFF FOR YOU THOUGH
for example....
Tumblr media
you might be wondering what the hell this is
this is a background for the visual novel aspect of the game!
well, an unfinished one.
i based it off this screenshot i took off google maps!
Tumblr media
some of the things i need to add are
well
pretty much everything lol
but let's be more specific:
you see how in mine, all the textures seem flat, while in the real photo, the textures are defined?
bit funky innit
the thing is uh. i have no idea how to add texture like this in pixel art.
ive tried many times and it just looks really bad lmao
so i've done some research, and i think what i'm looking for are called "clusters"
never heard of those before
also whenever i look up a tutorial for drawing them they just basically say "just draw these funny shapes!" and i'm like "okay but wHERE. YOU CANNOT JUST TELL ME TO DO THING. I NEED CONTEXT FOR THING. OOGA BOOGA BANG ROCK WITH STICK"
completely unrelated but i've noticed that whenever i get two ads on youtube, i can't skip them both at once
like when i press the skip ad button, it just goes to the next ad
don't know if this is only happening to me but it is REALLY annoying
fuck you youtube
i suppose i should dedicate the end of my post to the project itself.
ANOTHER QNA!
Q: Will you charge money for the game?
A: Complicated question.
this game is the epitome of a passion project in my eyes. it is a story i am telling not for any of my own personal gain, but simply because i feel like it is a story that needs to be told.
but enough of all this sappy shit, i'll just explain it simply:
when this game eventually comes out, i will either:
a: open the game up to donations (like the "name your price" thing), the majority of which will go to charity and anyone who helps on the project or
b: make the game 100% free.
Q: Do you accept fanart of the characters?
A: UH
YEAH????
if you draw my characters i will literally go bonkers /pos style
i unfortunately don't have an official ref sheet for any of them yet, but i'll be able to provide substitutes if asked
i think it would be cool to feature some of the fanart in the credits! (with permission from the artists, of course!) but that may take up too much space so i'll have to think it over.
tldr i fucking love fanart
Q: What about NSFW?
A: ...
Okay.
Listen.
I HIGHLY advise against it. I'm a minor and that's just like. weird.
Even after I turn 18, it'll still be weird because they were characters I first drew up when I was 16.
but at the same time, i accept that this is the internet, and that some gooner supremo will eventually stumble across this game :/
so i just have one definitive request.
PLEASE
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
DO NOT INCLUDE CHARACTERS WHO ARE UNDER 18
for example:
You may remember Silhouette.
they are CANONICALLY 13.
so like. keep them out of it.
i don't care if they're "just a character". you could say my fist is "just a body part" right before i bash your face in
if you want, i can provide the ages for any character you ask. i have a whole spreadsheet!
so please.
anyways that's gonna do it for today
to everybody who isn't youtube: i love you and thank you for being here
i will see you next week!

v3′s art is comically terrible for a professionally distributed game in a series: a compilation
in this not-essay I will list all of the mistakes and problems I have spotted in v3′s art. don’t worry, it’s entirely for fun and I’m doing this on a whim, so please feel free to not take this seriously but also it’s hilarious and embarrassing how ridiculous this is like what happened did they speedrun the whole production or what
see, there are some things you can take as meta like “they made it bad on purpose to allude to the downfall of tv shows that have been on air for much too long” but I have a very strong feeling this is not the case due to the nature of some of these errors
disclaimer, the more I study this art, the more I fear that the artists were underpaid and underslept, so if this is in fact the case, I am so sorry to all of them but also I’m going to make fun of the art anyway
anyway let’s get started!
Tumblr media
if you study this image for longer than 5 seconds, you will see that kaede is the only one fully shaded and keebo is literally just his normal sprite pasted into the image. every other character is just an ordinary ref, hence most of them facing the exact same direction with neutral expressions on their faces. it looks like a bad edit, and is probably one of the worst pieces of art in the game. it kind of gets better from here on, but my roasting will not.
with that out of the way, here’s the problem that officially bothers me the most and clarifies my viewpoint of “this is not meta and an actual lack of company communication”
Tumblr media
this freaking cg, which seems normal at a glance, but some wiseass was like “oh, kaede is a girl, so obviously she’s going to be shorter than the Male Protagonist™” ah, that’s funny. because if you look at the character bios, kaede is, in fact, one inch taller than shuichi and not like 6 inches shorter as she is shown here.
also shuichi’s shoulder is disproportionate and horrendous and he looks vaguely like a jojo character, but I wasn’t even thinking about that until right now.
Tumblr media
thanks guys, 50% of the fandom who has never bothered to check these bios thinks that kaede is like 5′3 (did the developers really put so little thought into her to the point where drawing her correctly in the game didn’t even matter??)
also I would like to point out that, even though this isn’t related to the art itself, yes, a character kaede’s size being only 117 lbs is unfeasible, but this applies to literally every character in danganronpa ever and it’s not new news that it’s unrealistic
update: someone in the tags informed me that in versions of the game that use centimeters, like the japanese version, kaede is actually shorter than shuichi, which just adds another thing to the list of weird decisions the localization team made for no reason. that said, after confirming this, kaede is 167 cm in the original, while shuichi is 171 cm, which are approximately 5′6 and 5′7 respectively, but one inch is still nowhere near as drastic as it is depicted above. (in spite of this, I would rather depict kaede as slightly taller, so I’m probably going to keep doing that.)
the journey continues!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
bro if you want kaede to have shoulder length hair then stick to it to begin with
Tumblr media
you can pretend this is at an angle all you want but they definitely committed the shorter kaede sin a second time
wait a goddamn second.
Tumblr media
DO YOU SEE THIS
no………… it wasn’t kaede who shrank. it was shuichi who got taller
Tumblr media
speaking of which, can we talk about how shady the perspective is in this elevator pic? look at shuichi and kokichi in comparison to kaede. kokichi, who is canonically 7 inches (edit: or 5, if you’re loyal to the original) shorter than kaede, looks taller than kaede. he’s growing too. what steroids are these gays taking
Tumblr media
running into the room, electric boogaloo: I don’t think tsumugi is supposed to be the same height as kokichi
Tumblr media
gonta… gonta you’re lookin a bit like a jojo character there
Tumblr media
I love how kaito’s head looks kind of like it was pasted onto his body. why is he the same size as shuichi? shouldn’t he be high school bully size or something? his torso is teensy
Tumblr media
ah yes, white angie.
Tumblr media
I love this cg but why is shuichi’s right hand so much bigger than his left hand
Tumblr media
I also love how this cg looks like they literally took pictures of trees and pasted them into the background, especially on the left. the shadows are so weird, especially closer to the ceiling, it’s difficult for me to believe they didn’t do exactly that.
Tumblr media
return of Enlarged shuichi
Tumblr media
puberty update: kokichi is now taller than shuichi in spite of shuichi never missing leg day. what crimes will he commit
Tumblr media
I have to mention it, guys. this has to be one of the worst danganronpa cgs. kokichi’s facial proportions look atrocious. look at the way his face sticks out like his jaw is in the wrong place. his scarf is a pasted texture. that’s it. this moment was so iconic but the cg just looks so… so… off. like something is terribly wrong, but you can’t put your finger on it.
you know what? let’s get into that ‘pasted texture’ thing.
Tumblr media
let’s imagine you’re an artist working on a professional game. you’re assigned to draw cgs of kokichi ouma, who has a checkered scarf from hell. sure, it will be terrible to draw, but you only have to draw it once at a time! plus, perspective is pretty important, right? can you be bothered? nah, actually. let’s just copy paste a checkered pattern into the cg, because I’m sure nobody will notice. it’ll blend right in with the other cgs that someone actually put effort into drawing his scarf in, right?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
no. the answer is no and I very much noticed. this genuinely looks terrible and I would understand taking a shortcut like that in fanart or even an indie game but this is a full price pc and console distributed game
(an addition: look at kokichi’s TINY HANDS in that last one)
Tumblr media
meanwhile, they straight up forgot to color in kokichi’s scarf in this cg.
Tumblr media
dude. I forgot about whatever the hell this cg was. anyway look at keebo please just look at him
Tumblr media
lovin kaito’s baby arms
real talk, maybe you could argue that he’s missing muscle because he’s deathly sick, but most of his cgs don’t line up with this, and his arms just look disproportionate to his torso size (granted this is a consistent problem across all danganronpa games and a lot of characters have this weird problem, like hajime, but also kaito is bigger than hajime so I kind of have higher expectations of him) maybe it’s his stupid goatee and the way he reminds me of yasuhiro?? it creates this illusion that he’s older than he is and so I keep expecting him to look more like an adult
oh, also rantaro is missing some of his accessories in that video he made–you know the one–but I don’t wanna go back and screenshot it
also you may have noticed that I’m skipping all of the monokub cgs because I literally do not care about them and I’m not even bothering to check and see if they have artistic mistakes in them
Tumblr media
JIMMY NEUTRON???
Tumblr media
hey um uh kaito you seem to be missing your neck
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hey guys do you like my pregame fanart
so, that done, the sprites are also pretty terrible at times. they’re not as interesting to go through, however, and downloading the full sprite sets for every character and studying every single one of them will drive me insane, so I’ll just sum some of the ones I noticed up. I made things for kaede and shuichi before deciding I wasn’t going to get into it, so here are these.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
that said, other mistakes include kokichi missing his purple highlights in all of the sprites encompassing a specific pose, stray pixels all over the place on everyone, and everyone also has heavily inconsistent shading, but literally all I think about is how pregame shuichi is unshaded and two of kaede’s pregame sprites have glaring outfit change mistakes in them
anyway, thank you for taking the time to read my ridiculous ramble. in all seriousness, there’s this looming presence of some lack of communication in the development team, like with all the art and design inconsistencies, pieces and sprites that look rushed, stray pixels, and missing basic proportional stuff. these are the kinds of things that you supposedly have to pretty much have in the bag in order to get jobs in professional businesses, so it’s really weird to me that this game suffers from so many of these problems. it’s like they tried to make the art so much more crisp than the other games, but it fell on its face as they realized it was going to take longer to draw everything and they started to rush. it’s weird, because the coloring itself looks normal–it’s just sloppily drawn, and the proportions are a mess once put into the context of perspective. many of the cgs look like they were drawn by different people, and I’m still not over the fact that half of kokichi’s cgs have his scarf pasted in as a texture.
the moral of the story is that if you’re selling a game at full price that also happens to be in a series that has had 3 very good games in it already the stakes should probably be higher than this. v3 has been out for more than 3 years and it’s still $40 (did it cost more than that before? I sure hope not), and the overarching quality of the game is just not as high as the other games. I’m not saying that the other games don’t have any problems with their art at all, they’re just not as glaringly obvious and every artistic choice in those games feels intentional.
regardless, I had a blast roasting the art at 2am, so maybe you got a kick out of all this chaos.

WoW: Sprite Darter and Nether Faerie Dragon (click to embiggen!)
Third of the Ko-Fi commissions, for my dear old friend @dragonsmirk (whom Tumblr will never let me tag for some reason), who’s into World of Warcraft.  The sprite darter (lower left) is a pet/companion you can get in Feralas, and her troll shaman Guchalag has one.  The nether faerie dragon is a variation on the sprite darter (obviously), more of a night creature (I think?), and many parts of it are transparent.  (The background, however, it based a bit on Ashenvale, which is a more purple-hued forest environment then Feralas. I kept it really simple so it wouldn’t compete with all the details in the figures.)
I used to draw a LOT of firelizards back in the day ;-), but haven’t done any in years, so doing these guys was lots of fun. Their wing shapes and design were fun to figure out!  They are, needless to say, reffed from a bunch of sources, including game screenshots, and a neat tool you could use to rotate them in 3D.  All done in CSP except for the glow effect, which I had to do in PS.

How is he always so... confident? No, that’s not the right word. Optimistic.
Here are Jeramiah the Mudkip (me) and Cinder the Cyndaquil of Rescue Team Overflow, my team in PMD: Blue Rescue Team!
Coming in as the fifth Pokémon drawing I’ve ever done, and the fifth one this year, I can say with certainty that, holy crap, I’ve made a ton of progress this year. This is by far the most complex anything I’ve ever done art-wise, and I’m honestly really happy with it. Except for that rock. I don’t like that rock.
Anyway, as per usual for my drawing, have a look below the “Keep reading” if you want to see some info about the drawing and my thoughts on different things about it!
Start date: 10/9/19 (October 9) End date: 12/18/19 Total # of days: 70 # of days I spent working on it: 24
For comparison with other drawing I’ve done: Amber the Fennekin, my first ever Pokémon drawing, took 54 days. The headshot of my Pokésona that I used as my first icon took 24 days. The drawing of Dusk, which is the most recent picture before this one, took 20. And the “group photo” with Typhlosion took 78 (56 if you only count days I worked on it).
This is the first time I’ve drawn a background. At all. Yes, I had references to look at and it wouldn’t have been done nearly as quickly if I didn’t, but still.
I probably should’ve zoomed this in before putting it on Tumblr.
Paint Tool SAI has a layer limit of 256. How many times did I hit it? Well, let’s just say I didn’t keep track, but\ that little error box popup made itself known at least 10 times. It made the shading stages... interesting, to say the least.
Both characters were at different angles when I started this drawing, though Cinder changed more than I did. He was originally lying down, but I can 100% understand why his sleeping sprite in the Rescue Team base is him sitting. Drawing a Cyndaquil lying down is weirdly difficult.
As is drawing Cyndaquil at all. I swear, I struggle more with the simple, easy designs (Cyndaquil, Typhlosion, Chikorita, Fennekin) than I do with the more complicated ones (Cubone, Mudkip, Zorua). but! I’m happy with how he is now, and that’s what matters.
How did I draw the map, you ask? Well, first I drew the base, with the curled edges and the kinda parchment-y color. Then I traced the map in Rescue Team. The entire. world map. It only took a couple days. Not entirely sure it was worth it, but it looks like a map, and that’s what I was going for.
The Mudkip ref I used (the official art from Bulbapedia) had a tail that I didn’t like the look of, so I drew my own! Side note: I scrolled up to the point something on my screen was right in the way of part of its outline, so I thought I missed a line break. nope! thankfully.
All of the outlines (except my mouth and a lot of the grating) are colored! Most of them are really dark so it doesn’t look too out of place and they still look and act like an outline, but I like the look of it better than the omnipresent pure blackness!
That weird plate thing that hangs on the grating looks like a face in game. I didn’t like that, so I drew a line on it that kinda reminds me of a cursive capital L now that I think about it and flipped it so the design was symmetrical. I think it looks pretty good! I might make it the emblem of this Rescue Team, or something like that.
This is the first time I’ve done shading to this extent, and with multiple light angles to boot. I think it looks pretty good for my first attempt! and on the topic of shading, the characters’ shadows were a lot easier to get down this time around compared to Dusk and Amber! Having a definite source of light definitely helped, and I think they look better when they’re this transparent.
I don’t like that rock. It looks flat and out of place, and I could not figure out how to get its perspective right. So I blurred everything in the foreground. (...I was going to anyway, but that rock gave me another good reason to.) side note, gaussian blur is my friend. Holy crap it makes such a difference for literally shifting the focus of the picture.
I drew four trees then copy+pasted them to fill in the rest of the “Outside,” though I did try to at least make them look different. I shaded them based on distance, too.
I had to delve the depth of Google Images to find an anime screenshot of Cyndaquil looking at the camera with its mouth open to get the right colors. Blocking sites directly from your search is your friend, because Google’s Safe Search certainly isn’t.
And that does it for drawing #5, and probably my last drawing of this year. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoyed the drawing!

Read from left to right. I’d recommend seeing the full view:
Page 1 - Page 2 - Page 3 - Page 4 - Page 5
It’s actually written goodbye in last panel but with FFCC’s alphabet. It looks like a google to me when I take a quick glance. :p
Phew. I had this done a while ago but didn’t feel it was the right time to post, idk. More comment and context below the cut.
This scene is post-game when they travel together (relationship isn't official yet) and they come across a moogle village. The moogles are in trouble because their stream isn't running as it used to so they lack water. Ramsey and Luu Kah solve the problem along with a moogle of the village (Mene) and a chocobo they "domesticated" for the occasion.
After that, Luu Kah takes a walk in the village while Ramsey’s still talking to the moogles; they speak an old language and only Ramsey manages to (half) communicate with them at this point.
Sooo there, that’s when Ramsey’s done and goes and look for Luu Kah. As planned, it took forever. I used a lot of help from past drawings and references, reusing things I already had, most often as drafts/bases.
Usual problem is I spent so much time on it that I'm blind. I'm afraid to find this utterly ugly in a few weeks lol. Some things already make me cringe, but I don't always manage to fix them.
Other problem is the scene was in repeat for so long in my head that I started to wonder if it made any sense at all, especially when you don't have all the story. Even stupid details made me doubt; for instance, drawing someone's face isn't blatantly romantic, so why does it do something to Luu Kah? Well idk man, he's so in love that he interpreted it as "so I was first thing on his mind?", esp. that he wasn't expecting it of all things. He thought Ramsey was just going to draw the same thing or another animal. But yeah, I started to just put a lot of things into questions and don't know anymore how it can be seen from an outside view. Maybe we'll think I'm weird and stupid; whatever. It made sense the day I wrote it and inside the story. orz
The last page also ends a bit quickly I feel? But again, in my script the part where Ramsey talks to the moogles happens just before, so I wasn’t going to repeat the details when writing this following scene. They can just talk about it on the road.
In any case, "this ship will test your patience" applies to them haha. Also we'll excuse Luu Kah for speaking straight and not realizing right away what he was saying. It's not that he wouldn't give compliments, just that he'd avoid saying that kinda “obvious” thing out loud usually, since he's in a gotta keep a low profile mode. :D
So yeah. I just remembered that scene (I was triggered when seeing an OVA screenshot of Colette drawing Lloyd’s face in the ground) and idk, I wanted to draw it. There's something... soft? about it that I like. They're in their little world or something, haha.
I didn't bother very much with backgrounds, but I imagine that the moogle village is prettier than that, and their houses more specials and cute. But it's too much work already. :'D
Some poses were helped by Senshistock resources. Sometimes I used my own hand as ref.
Luu Kah’s chocobo is greatly inspired by a drawing I asked someone to do haha. The story behind that is I asked my bf and a friend of his to draw an ugly chocobo, and I said I’d use the one who wins as uglier. :D In the end they were rather good, so I used a bonus drawing his friend did, because it was very simple and it was actually what I needed. (It’s still cute actually lol).

miiikaelson replied to your post “It’s almost four in the morning, and I’m too busy drawing our...”
ref shots ain't bad at all and i'm impressed at your ability to draw from sight!! thats reaslly hard, and the perspective is super duper well done
also impressive the fact that you went to so much trouble to get an in-game reference. i dunno how much of a reference u used for emily but whether from sight or original its a fucking + and i cant wait to see the finished project
the wrinkles are nice, and so are the blood dripping and the little details above her mark (that i nearly missed!!) it all looks really nice and her face looks like HER face which is another hard thing. its nice.
ok, compliments done. im reblogging it to my art favorites and emily tag now. bc its so good and i cant wait.
wait compliments not done. the bodies make nice details bc they like direct TO emily and u got some design techniques with the behead guy. i had to take a lengthy design class. i now see design in everything. u did well.
First of all, you’re an absolute DEAR, and I adore you oh my god. I was going to reply to this last night but it was around 5am and I just ended up falling asleep whoopsies.
2) MAN THE PERSPECTIVE. DON’T EVEN GET ME S T A R T E D. It took me about an hour to set up the damn picture I wanted for the reference because I can draw Dunwall pretty decently without a reference but Karnaca’s got a really, really, really specific look whereas Dunwall is just sort of “London steampunk-ish.” And THEN it took another twenty minutes to take the damn photos because leading lines and balancing the foreground vs background, and negative space blah blah blah I’ve studied art basically my entire life, and a part of me wants to go “Fuck it” and ignore the basic principles of design, but it’s ingrained in me and I can’t. I’m getting off topic. PERSPECTIVE. RIGHT. I had to redraw the entire background around ten times because all of my ref pics were from drastically different positions and I was screaming trying to figure out where the focal points were but I think I kinda sort of got it in the end.
3) I’ve only drawn Emily about four times or so before so I have a decent understanding as to how her face looks (it helps that her moles happen to be in the same places my moles are, which is kind of freaky and creeps me out a bit) so those little details are pretty easy to figure out BUT, because I wanted to  get things perfectly right I used a couple dozen refs from different sources to figure out how I wanted Emily to look. (She looks so different in every single version that I wanted to find a middle ground.) And @ominousdeer ‘s dozens of photos of Em were amazing (I did use a direct ref of ominous’ for the pose because I couldn’t be bothered to sit down for four hours scouring the internet, or fiddling with sketches), as well as my eight billion screenshots of Em during the first cinematic trailer for her (the one from the E3 announcement) ‘cause I feel like that’s how Arkane wanted her to look if she was hyper realistic, and it’s also the only one where she decently looks biracial and goddammit, I want to preserve what few biracial characters there are because I sure as hell never found any characters that were biracial in the media when I was growing up that I saw myself in.
4) The Mark!!! I didn’t give her a sword because the whole point of the piece is “blood on my hands” etc etc etc, making her crimes a little bit more personal, and in my original version of this, she was also weaponless (but her hands were covered in a LOT more blood), but narrative wise it didn’t make sense as to how she’d kill them 100% bare handed, and then I remembered that the Mark glows when it’s being used so tadaaaaa glowing, smoking Mark
5) Ahhh thank you! There was a lot of careful body placement when I was setting up my ref (which is HARD because you either fucking launch them across the entire map but they ragdoll which is nice for randomization of body placement, or you gently sit them down and they just rest in a sort of loose T-pose which is so unnatural looking and doesn’t at all make it seem like they’re dead.) I had to end up throwing bodies from down the alleyway and off of buildings (the scene is actually the Overseers’ offices where Mindy sends you to go get a body in Mission 2 of D2) so I cleared all the Overseers and threw them off the top of the building hoping it’d work... it wasn’t... fun. (Yes it totally was. Especially since I left the civilians alive so there was a lot of chaos.)

P & Q
P: How much do you plan in advance versus letting the story unfold as you go?
Story-wise, ends and general events are always planned early on (All 130 Prompts, most of Identity Theft, Hawthorn Haven, Little Imperfections, No Anesthetic, Factor It In, Devil’s Backbone, and so on are already planned even though I won’t be posting some of these things for years), so it’s just a matter of doing the actual writing. Beginnings come next and middles come last.
For me, writing is a matter of saying, “Here is my destination. Where are we coming from and how do we get there?” Depending on what I’m writing, sometimes where I’m coming from is the previous chapter, sometimes it’s a specific point in my timeline. Chapters don’t require a lot of set-up because readers should more or less remember what’s recently happened to a character, but with one-shots I have to clarify not only the setting, but recent events as best as I can. There’s a different mindset there.
Origin, Knots, and the Prompts are divided into over a hundred different files in Google Docs, so I can’t give an accurate word count, but I probably have 200k words on hand for both Origin and Knots and at least 300k for the Prompts. I wrote scenes I consider significant early on and I’m working my way towards them, correcting inconsistencies along the way.
What I plan worldbuilding-wise for a fantasy series is another topic altogether (Expanded on below the cut).
Sociopolitical Aspects
For my Mario works, for example, the first thing planned was how the Koopa Kingdom is laid out, and where the Koopalings fit into my ideas. Then it was a matter of deciding which parts of canon I want to draw from and what I want to do with it. I didn’t rule out the new kingdoms revealed in Odyssey, but I definitely didn’t erase Sarasaland and the Beanbean Kingdom either. I worked out the political systems of a few countries, what the social norms and big crimes are, and the basics of Bowser’s inclination towards violence.
I have a document noting what the people of each land are called and what their native languages are so I don’t have to worry about contradicting myself later, which has been extremely useful. I even determined populations for different kingdoms, with the Mushroom Kingdom at about 235 million people, the Koopa Kingdom almost twice that, and the Beanbean Kingdom a measly 4 million. Even if this info never comes up in story, it helps me understand how people interact with one another and fit into this system.
Tumblr media
In my FOP works, I worked out the history of Fairy/Anti-Fairy conflicts, drawing from aspects of canon such as the known war over human godchildren. The Pixies fit in there too as the neutral party. Then there’s the matter of fitting in the aliens and humans. Deeper yet, the Ghosts and Beasts. Figuring out the international relationships up front works best for me, and then I can later determine how characters with this background interact in this environment.
In my Danny Phantom works, I drew from a comment Butch made once that although King Pariah was a tyrant, he did keep the Ghost Zone organized and it’s fallen to chaos since he was overthrown. I worked out Ghost-Skeleton relations, how the Observants play into things, and what the space within the world might be like.
Tumblr media
In my WordGirl works, determining how Hexagon functions was crucial to what I decided to do with Kid Math: In this case, his planet is obsessed with math to the point they only have spoken language, not a written one. They use numbers and mark up blueprints, but written language is for the Lexiconians [Insert snobby scoffing].
When writing Rhyme and Reason backstory, I worked out how common powers are, how those with certain powers are treated by society, what kind of education kids with powers get pushed towards, what laws might exist, how many heroes there might be, and how police involvement works in cities that have heroes. In this alternate world, there are things called charm schools that are “finishing schools” for kids with powers, and Rhyme was almost sent to one until she ran away.
Physical Aspects
I made the Mushroom Kingdom an archipelago and chose Indonesia as my main inspiration country, researching the climate, seasons, plants, and meals typically found there. I know exactly when the dry season ends and the wet season starts and how this affects the Piranha Plants.
In FOP, I understand the landscapes of Fairy World and Anti-Fairy World, what kinds of mountains and water features they can have, and the flora and fauna found in each location. I know ways to move between locations, what travel is possible with magic, and what happens in times there isn’t any magic. I know what the major buildings are, where they are, and what they do.
In my DP works, there are certain stable parts of the Ghost Zone and certain unstable parts. It’s easy to get lost if you’re new there and not used to things moving around, but as you learn the rules of the world, you’re able to identify landmarks. I know which populations live where and what those landscapes are like. I came up with rules for how lairs work and how far things can move about the Zone. I know how things work and which characters know X amount of information about their surroundings.
Cultural Aspects
I pored over a LOT of small details in canon for my Mario works. I took painstaking notes about the Soybean civilization, the ancient Luffs, the fallen Bask Kingdom, and all sorts of historical tidbits and worked those into modern canon. Some stuff didn’t cross my path during my personal gameplay, but I like knowing about it anyhow.
I considered Peach’s pathway to becoming queen and how she fits her role, especially compared to her predecessors. I made stars important in Mushroom Kingdom culture and the moon important in Koopa culture. I created lore for why karting exists, canonizing all locations and the general idea of kart racing even if I’m not going to make every kart track canon or organize each game in a timeline.
FOP worldbuilding involved gathering as much canon from the show as possible, collecting info from folklore, plucking bits and pieces from insect and bat biology, and marrying the three together. It was important to me to give Fairy World a distinct culture different from any on Earth, and really examine how magic affects daily life in this world.
Anthropomorphizing insect behaviors gave me Fairies who lick faces as a form of greeting and who favor those with freckles above those without. Not exactly accurate to show canon, but it works great. Gyne and drone relationships have been fun to build, and I made sure my timeline included points in the past where such relations were different than modern times. Changes in relationships over time is something that really fascinates me.
Anti-Fairy World also gets a unique culture. Since they’re evil antagonists in show canon, I certainly didn’t want to race-code them like any group of people on Earth. I’ve tried to design them their own culture, heavily inspired by bats and a belief in luck above all. Bats aren’t sociosexual, but they are promiscuous, so I don’t stick wholly to bat behaviors either: they’re partially based on bonobos. Most importantly, I made sure everything I did was fun for me to write.
With my particular writing style, it works to have deep, complex culture for the Anti-Fairies. If I wanted to write short, lighthearted pieces, that would impact where my worldbuilding priorities lay (Probably lots of cute holiday traditions and less focus on why Anti-Fairy culture revolves around causing others harm).
General Research
Heights, timelines, food, and clothes are all things I settle as soon as possible, and I keep ref sheets on hand so I can fact check myself at a glance. Fairies and Anti-Fairies, being a species who live in the clouds, have easier access to silkworms than cotton plants. That determines what their clothing is made of, what products are expensive, and what gets worn on certain occasions.
I draw from canon where possible, using screenshots or known character heights (Mario canonically 5′1″) and comparing them to others. Being of a different height can impact how others view you. Dining etiquette is a fun cultural difference that can create conversation or social awkwardness and really set the mood.
With fanfics, I dig as deep as I can. Did you know Wario canonically doesn’t know how old he is because his mom never threw him a birthday party? Or that he keeps a matchbox of ants in his cabinet and is “waiting until they worship him as a god”? I drink details like this by the gallon.
I prefer nailing this stuff down before getting far in my writing because that’s what works for me personally. I worldbuild further over time as I think up new questions I didn’t already have answers for.
Unique Aspects
Magic systems are complex. They generally take me longest and are more work than play. I like to have an outline of how a magic system works, write the story, figure out what I absolutely need magic to do and what I don’t want it to do, and then tighten the system during the revision process. For example, I weakened shapeshifting in my FOP works so you can’t easily hold another form while aroused- I personally didn’t want age changes to be involved in lovemaking. That expanded to making it hard to hold a form when you’re drunk too.
It was important to me in my Mario works to have 1-Up mushrooms exist and be capable of saving your life, but I also needed a reason why people don’t walk around with 99 lives and consume 1-Ups at all times. After wrestling with plans for a while, I decided to make them time-sensitive. You have to consume them often to have more than one life on a regular basis, and they’re pretty rare. As long as I can justify why someone has access to this rare item, I can utilize a 1-Up’s power, but I can also justify killing someone off if enough time has passed since they last consumed one.
With Fairly OddParents, I’d seen enough episodes to understand the basics of wishes, magical backup, and Da Rules. When I became serious about writing FOP ‘fics, I started noting the times Cosmo and Wanda failed to use magic for reasons other than Da Rules (Not in sync with each other, low battery, lack of belief in magic, Big Wand toppled over, etc.) and built my version of the FOP magic system to accommodate as many of these “inconsistencies” as I could. My take on magic is complex, but I can stretch the system many ways, so it works great for me.
Will I use everything I’ve worldbuilt in story? I might not say it directly, but having a pool of information I can draw from helps me find ways to flesh out a character’s life. Some stuff makes it in, other stuff is only vaguely glimpsed. To me, diving into worldbuilding is fun. Taking what I have and creating something with it is even more fun. I could whip out a bunch of one-shots about basic slice-of-life events without doing all this work, but tying my stories to social, political, or culture aspects of the world is what I really enjoy.
Q: Do you have any discarded scenes/storylines/projects?
//Laughs
I don’t like deleting things, so I move them to scrap docs instead. Origin, Knots, and the 130 Prompts each have a scrap file of 50+ pages (91 pages of scrapped Prompt scenes) and I can usually remember keywords so the deleted scenes are easy to search for if I need them. Some get recycled, even back into the same chapter I originally deleted them from, but a lot stay dead because they were either irrelevant or inconsistent with the final material.
Fortunately for me, I have a good memory of what I kept vs. what I scrapped. I’ve compiled some favorites in my deviantArt Sta.sh and linked them in my FOP sideblog because they’re my version of sketchdumps. Even if they’re unfinished, I still think they’re interesting to look at.
For some reason I don’t delete much from my standalone one-shots, just my multi-chapter stuff. Most of what enters my standalones survives.
The projects I’m most hurt to have left hanging are my Total Drama stories The Beatin’ Path and Lions Under Palm Trees, keeping with my tradition of writing stories about eliminated contestants at that season’s elimination location from the perspective of the first character eliminated. I have a good 15k words written for the former and 25k for the latter, and I just… let them slip through my fingers in favor of Fairly OddParents years ago.
Arguably letting them go is for the best because I took the “cartoon physics are canon” concept and RAN with it, so I have an entire plot arc about one character coming into puberty and having his ability to utilize cartoon physics switch on for the first time. I personally consider Lions one of my best works in terms of matching my niche interests, but the acknowledgement of cartoon physics does stray from Total Drama canon, and I just couldn’t get over that enough to keep posting it.
Some of my all-time favorite scenes and characterizations are in these stories. I’m glad I have what I do for myself because these works make me smile even all these years later, buuut it’s probably best if I keep most of this nonsense private. This is probably my favorite snippet of the entire Lions draft, though:
“What’s in the box?”
Don’t say the hearts of small animals, don’t say the hearts of small animals.
“Stuff for my girlfriend.” It wasn’t untrue.
The least loved always end up my favorites somehow. I’m still so in love with my delusional wizard. I honestly might love Leonard more than I love any of the FOP characters I write about nowadays; he was the best I ever had. I mean, look at this FREAKING CHILD-
====
“Hand me my dice.”
Beardo dropped the dice in his hand. Leonard rolled them across the grass. Nine. He groaned. But, obediently, he knelt and poked his head inside the damaged zeppelin.
“Roll me an observance check.”
“Snake eyes.”
“Seriously? It’s dark. Try again. Higher this time.”
Beardo gave the dice another toss. “Lucky lucky seven.”
Leonard let out a high whistle between his front teeth. “No response,” he said after a moment. “I don’t think there are any animals down there, except maybe a few rats and some bugs. All right, I’m jumping down. Keep an eye on my back.”
He slid through the gap and dropped out of sight. Beardo heard him say, “Lux up,” and click the penlight on his keychain.
====
“Incriminatus, television.”
No reaction.
“Incriminatus, television.”
No reaction. The Christmas advertisements blared on. Leonard raised his wand to his eye, then slapped the tip a few times against his palm. “Come on, wand. Tammy isn’t here anymore. Why aren’t you working? I still believe in you.”
The door eased open. “Hey, Leonard,” Jen said in a voice of false cheerfulness. “I got your toothbrush out of… the other room.”
Leonard didn’t try to switch off the TV and faced the window instead. “Brushing teeth is for people who can’t do it with magic.”
====
“Wait.” Leonard raised both hands above his head, squeezing his eyelids tight. “Wait. What you’re saying is, Scarlett pulled a Courtney to the extreme and hid her secret identity as an ‘evil’ mastermind supervillain shaman queen this entire time. She played a character so well that even her closest friend – not to mention Chris – couldn’t see through her act until she chose to reveal herself. At which point she then convinced everyone that she was actually said ‘evil’ mastermind supervillain. You’re telling me there was a LARPing goddess in my presence, and I completely missed it.”
“I didn’t put it in those words for a reason,” Jasmine said, “but at its core, yes.”
Leonard pressed his hands to his cheeks and stared into his salad. “Holy flipping plot twist. I am so turned on right now.”
“No,” Jasmine said, jabbing him in the chest with one finger, “No you are not.”
Amy clicked her tongue. “Leonard, you have a girlfriend.”
“Not anymore. That’s it. I’m breaking up with Tammy for real this time.”
Beardo slapped him on the back of the head and made a sound like a police siren.
====
One Lions chapter was named “Baa Baa Blackmail” if that tells you anything. Ah, memories… It’s probably for the best if these projects stay retired, but I love them so very much.

Welcome to Sketches of the Month: June!
Well, this was definitely an interesting month; for more reasons than just my art, but I won’t get onto that stuff here. We’re all here to see the art hopefully! And indeed, I was the productive plush this month; and I would like to say that I’m quite enjoying the direction my art is going, if y'all don’t mind me speaking my mind. I’ve been experimenting with many different factors of my art; such as characterisation, emotion, expression and colour. And I feel like I’ve at least succeeded in some regard to these intentions!
But enough with the introductions now; let’s get on to the pictures themselves, shall we?~
——————————————————————-
Picture 1: Two Player Game!
Yes, the Boyf is back! This was drawn right at the beginning of June, and I’ll admit my obsession with BMC has been toned down considerably to a light admiration; so I don’t have as much artwork pertaining to it. But I still really liked this sketch of them as the Mario Bros, even if I never finished it like I wanted to XD
——————————————————————-
Picture 2: We found one!
Hey, remember back to last month’s SotM (Sketches of the Month) with that pic of me and Silver with the chaos emerald? Yep, I finished it off here, and my god did it turn out amazing! I mean, I feel it turned out amazing. This picture reached a level of detail, colour and atmosphere that I hadn’t reached before then, and it was definitely a pivotal moment for me this month! I swear, I’m not even quite sure how I drew this XD
——————————————————————-
Picture 3: Moment of Music
This was also a sketch that was on last month’s SotM; and while it’s still a simple concept, I still feel like I excelled at experimenting with a softer and, dare I say, pastel colour scheme XD I’ve really noticed how much I love colours and how my brain seems to respond to them; especially when it comes to remembering things! I do indeed have that ukulele as well, sparkles and all XD
——————————————————————-
Picture 4 & 5: I really like 06…
Ok, now that I’ve said that publicly, these are some screenshot redraws that I did after I saw some other artists try their hand at the idea. I immediately went to 06, as I knew my intense focus on character and emotion would be a pretty appropriate combination; as 06’s character models were definitely not the best at conveying any emotion at all if we’re being honest here XD
——————————————————————-
Picture 6: Give them a chance to be happy…
Finished on the 23rd of June; this was basically my 26th anniversary picture for the franchise and the 16th anniversary for Sonic Adventure 2! I started the picture a day after my birthday, which was on the 20th of June, and was mainly attempting to experiment with the new markers that I got.
I was intrigued when I got the main idea for the piece sketched out, as I came to outline the picture with this shape that I’m not sure has a name??? XD Either way, I hoped I was able to convey Shadow’s story well through the picture, for his story was and still is some of the franchise’s best writing; and I can only hope for the best, story and all, in Sonic Forces!
——————————————————————-
Picture 7: *Gasp* I HAVE OCS??!!!
Yes, I am just as surprised my dear followers, but I have somehow miraculously created my own original characters! It’s a stunning feat, I know, but how’s about I stop this degrading talk about myself and actually explain these characters to y'all?
Well, Adabelle is quite the musical geek, and does aspire to join musical theatre professionally despite her fear of performing on stage. She is a quiet girl who stays to herself a lot, and while smart academically, she is usually awkward and nervous socially. She also has a slight fear of water, mainly only shown when near a large body of water or when out in the rain.
Now Layla can be considered similar to Adabelle with her limited social interactions, but she differs as she is more then willing to engage in conversation if someone else provokes it first. She tends to get competitive while playing practically any video game, even when there is seemingly nothing to challenge. Because of an event that she doesn’t speak of, she moved school and eventually became close friends with Adabelle; who she eventually confided in with her secret.
——————————————————————-
Picture 8: Chao are utterly adorable!
I believe this was also another sketch from last month, but I can’t recall at the moment. I’m still planning on doing a full background for it, but since the end of the month was coming up, I hastily made a background so I could make the picture transparent. This was another experiment with colouring, and I even drew myself wearing different clothes! *GASP* It's a miracle! I don’t smell anymore! XD JK, but yeah, I came up with a ‘Sonic’ design I guess you could call it; and I will probably do a ref sheet for it soon!
——————————————————————-
Well, I hope you enjoyed reading this everyone! I know I always write a lot here, but I truly appreciate it if you actually read through it all somehow XD I just always have a lot that I can say about my art, and I want everyone to know about it if they’re going to see my art already. I’m always up for questions in my ask box, or even if you just want to talk about something, I’m up for it!
