Excerpt from one of the TV Guide-esque magazines:

Time-travelling hero Doctor Who and his feisty assistant Rose are back! And with David Tennant stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor, this latest series promises to be out of this world. But while the 10th Doctor may be very different to his previous incarnation (played by Christopher Eccleston), he still has the same mission - to rid the galaxy of evil. David, who also starred in TV dramas Blackpool and Casanova, says being a Time Lord is scary. "The fact everyone is so fascinated by the series makes it the most wonderful job in the world - and the most terrifying," explains Scottish-born David, who is 35 this week. "It's very daunting."

Here's the first few paragraphs from the new and improved What Makes a Family 🥲

“We gather here today to remember the life and legacy of Jeremiah “Jimmy” David Stone, beloved son, partner, and father.” The words rang hollow in Rose’s ears, like they were being spoken from very far away. She barely felt like she was even present, as though this entire day was happening to someone else. The small body she held in her lap shifted, his big blue eyes blinking owlishly as her three-year-old son Matthew fixed his gaze on her. “Tha’s Daddy,” he said in that whispering way of toddlers that really wasn’t a whisper at all. “That’s right,” she murmured, smoothing his cornsilk blond hair away from his face. “Hush now. Can you sit nice and quiet for Mummy?” “Uh huh,” Matthew said, slumping back into her belly. The priest at the front of the church shot her a sympathetic glance, his pale gaze flitting between Matthew and David, Rose’s eight-year-old son. If anyone in the church was annoyed by Matthew’s interruptions, they didn’t show it—nobody would dare chastise a child who’d just lost his father. Rose reached over and wrapped her hand around David’s. Her son gave no reaction that he felt her touch, sitting as still and silently as he’d been doing these last four days. She was so useless, unable to offer anything other than hugs and kisses and words of affirmations to her children, and she raged against the world for forcing this tragedy into their young little lives. “I’m hungry,” Matthew stated, drawing muffled chuckles from those sitting around them. Rose had prepared for this. Matthew’s stomach was as unpredictable as a summer storm, and she made sure to always have snacks on hand for him. She reached into her purse and rooted around until she felt the cool plastic bag that housed dry cereal. “Thank you!” Matthew chirped when she handed it to him. “Shh, baby boy. We have to be quiet.” “Indoor voice,” he said, and to his credit, he actually whispered that time. Rose pressed a kiss to his fair hair and tried to tune in to the priest and ignore the nagging urge to get up and leave. Why should she be allowed to sit here and mourn a person she didn’t actually miss?

What a cheerful little scene, eh 🥲

Do you guys know good, long, slow burn Human Nature/Family of Blood AUs where Rose ends up getting pregnant with John’s child? I’ve stumbled across a fic with this concept, now I am filled with the urge to read more TenRose fics like this. The longer and more complicated, the better.

It was so cheesy and campy and ridiculous and I can't wait for more...

Sometimes, when I’m feeling a little sad, I like to visualise Rose going up on her tiptoes and kissing her husband on the jaw, while he leans down a bit towards her to plant a gentle kiss to her forehead. Cheers me up instantly.

If they bring back Rose and not Martha…😤

the fact that rose sees someone who has deeply hurt her mother, is coming in all combative, and then IMMEDIATELY switches gears when she realizes he himself has now been deeply hurt. CUDDLES him. one can really understand why ten would go to war and also start wars about this woman

It’s the annual re-read of Chaos Theory fic and m almost to the Doomsday part. Grabs tissues.

I’m currently watching Funny Lady, which is the film sequel to Funny Girl. It’s not regarded as as strong as the original - it certainly lacks the tragic propulsion that gives Funny Girl its magnetism. But it’s good, and has a strong score by, of all people, Kander and Ebb, mixed in with a lot of early 20th century popular songs.

It’s only a film (so far), and just like it lacks Styne and Merrill who composed and wrote lyrics to the original, it also lacks William Wyler, the original director, who is replaced by Herbert Ross, who staged the original film’s musical numbers. Streisand finally agreed to do it after seeing the script, thinking it was more than a half-baked sequel, and she’s right - Fanny feels more mature than the original, like it’s real character development.

It’s an underrated gem, I think! Maybe not a knockout, but Streisand is great, and the Kander and Ebb score is better than most. Fred Ebb in particular finds the maturer, more cynical, sarcastic voice of Brice in his lyrics . It also has pretty much all diegetic music, unlike the original, possibly because in the seven years between the films, musicals were out and music films were in. Streisand does a Brice impression that is much more recognisable as the late era Brice who was captured on film and tv than her early, more innocent years, which most people are unfamiliar with, and it really feels like she’s making an adult performance in the role, and shows her talent for comedy maybe even better than the original. A shame that so many songs are montaged, but Spotify gives you them in full!

This song, I Found A Million Dollar Baby (in a five and ten cent store), sees Barbra absolutely radiant in a top hat and tails, but was also originally written by Harry Warren, Mort Dixon and Billy Rose - the latter one of the characters in Funny Lady!
