I always wonder why ive been dissociating since January, and why my mental health is so fucked, and why I'm so anxious, and why I have zero social skills, and why I'm so lonely and sad and hurting all the time and pretty much resorting to one person nymphomania...

And then the one time I try to speak my mind for once, my true, honest mind. I don't even know who I am, but I was trying. I love my dog so much, and it hurts me to the core whenever SHE just can't seem to see it. My dog is a person, she is a BABY. Dogs will not bend to your will because you hit them. And she hasn't thank god, but god does she threaten to sometimes. If I have to hear one more time that if my dog slips out of her harness that's she's gonna be put down I'm gonna HURT HER BEACAUSE I ALREADY LOOST A DOG THIS YEAR AND IT STILL HASNT SUNK IN AND SHE GOT RID OF OUR OTHER TWO DOGS BECAUSE SHE DIDNT WANNA TRAIN THEM ANYMORE. it's not hard to give a dog a treat and tell her to sit so she doesn't jump on you, but SHE has to keep insisting she can't walk around with treats. GO FUCKING GRAB ONE ITS NOT HARD. SHES NOT GONNA STOP JUMPING ON YOU IF YOU DONT GIVE HER A TREAT, POODLES ARE GOAL MOTIVATED!

so yeah, I spoke my honest mind to HER just fifteen minutes ago. I just got out of a whimpering sobbing fit beacause of HER. So I'm just, downstairs, yeah? First of all, I'm greeted to not a hello, never. I was greeted to HER coming up to me to complain a out a flea on her this morning. And yeah, i really do get it, nothing against being told that. I told HER I'd give Phoebe a bath cause I was already thinking of it. Fine and dandy.

I come into the laundry room. SHE follows to do laundry. I get Phoebe ready to go outside because she has to wear underwear cause she went into heat early before we could get her spayed. She's jumping on HER. SHE is complaining about the jumping. It stops after a moment and after I keep telling her to sit. She doesn't, but she stops.

I tell HER for the third(?) Instance this week that "Phoebe would probably sit more if you got a treat and told her to sit." And SHE rounds at me like "*Complaining complaining* I don't walk around with a pocket full of treats." And I'm like, sputtering, just a tad taken aback and I tell HER "they're on top of the fridge" barely 15 feet from us. She says nothing as she leaves. Phoebe doesn't go outside but it's an oh well cause she didn't eat yet.

I go inside. I make something to eat. As I sit down to wait for it, HER girlfriend, N, who I have no qualms with even though it might sound like it. So N asks me if Phoebe needs a new harness, because she's had two recent issues with slipping out. I say yeah, presenting that she slipped out on a walk recently. We continue by briefly talking about how's she's been slipping out. I say we probably should get her harness fixed, beacause I have to train Phoebe with strangers by giving strangers treats to have her sit and then get pet when she's sitting. And that she would definitely tackle a kid if she got loose and saw one because my dog ADORES my toddler nieces.

SHE chimes in by saying "you know if she gets loose-" and I cut her off, because I've heard where it's going before. Rude as it was, but the family kinda talks over eachother anyway. "Yeah, I know, she's gonna get put down." And SHES like "NO. She could get put down and they could sue ME. I don't know why youre getting like "I know."

And I'm sitting there dumbfounded, with my dog sitting two feet from me. Saying like, "I value my dog's life more than money???" And SHE starts backtracking all offended I said something back like "I do too, but..." And then SHE scoffs. I talk to N a little more but my attention is on HER when SHE huffs and says "I'm gonna go smoke." Like I stressed HER out by speaking my mind and she walked past me to the basement and shut the door with more force than was needed. Im sitting there with my hotpocket folding the damn thing, and I look at N, who isn't doing anything, and Im jawdropped like, wtf. So I just go over to my dog, i tap her side so she gets up and goes to the stairs where I reside %99 of my days, and as I'm leaving I'm muttering trying to get N to hear me like "alright, can't even speak my mind in this house, okay." Cause this has been an issue for YEARS. So I take my mad ass upstairs, and as soon as I get halfway to my room I'm sobbing.

Normally I wouldn't post something like this for my SOUL. But I literally can't talk to anyone about this because the problem lives in my house and I'm gonna forget this like the rest of my life. MY MOM STORMED OFF LIKE A TEENAGER. ill be all fine and dandy by tomorrow because my mom's gonna ignore it even happened like EVERYTHING, and I'm just gonna be the bad guy in her head. I'm fine with that. But I'm really not. Y'know? She's just sitting down there now. Completely fine. When I'M NOT. Thanks.

She’s Afraid, I’m Afraid, too

Managing expectations is not my strength. Sometimes, indeed - right now, I’m am deeply disappointed.Why? Well, I have a 10.5 month old puppy (P) and it’s just not going so well between us. When I got her, she was a 9 week old ball of squishy, darling fluff and I immediately began work on all the puppy checklists I could get my hands on! I was determined to Text Book this critter into the Perfect Pet. We had 100 new experiences in 100 days, met men, women, dogs of all sizes and (a few) children! We drove in a car, went on a airplane, biked around and visited multiple restaurants/breweries and stores. We did Puppy Kindergarten, Basic Obedience and part of a Intermediate Obedience until she was spayed and needed a little time off. Time off turned into settling into a routine, fewer adventures, and very occasional visitors. Through the cracks of our routine crept fear - and it landed squarely on P. She began to walk with a tucked tail, freeze when she saw strangers (doggo or person) and even refused to walk by a landscaping rock she’d seen 100s of times! She began to bark at visitors and some strangers with a warning in her voice and posture - not good.  Her vigilance in the house increased - and so has my stress. 

What happened? Why the shift (although I always thought she seemed overly submissive and sensitive)? I’m alone in my thinking, BTW, the vet and spouse say P is ‘fine’. Not one to back down from intuitive feelings, I hired a dog trainer to come to our house - let’s call her “D” since that’s her first initial and I am not clever. P barked like a maniac at D but warmed up when she figured out D was packing hot dogs. We had nice visit and D gave me tips on how to intro P to new things without overwhelming her.  We decided to do a 5 week group class with D to support socialization and P’s confidence.

Today was our first day in this new class. When we first entered the class P came in nicely. A child came in and walked near us and she growled briefly at him. I did like that she seemed to become ‘okay’ with his presence given treats to support counter-conditions. She learned the presented skills quickly - she’s food motivated and knew ‘sit’ already. Then, the class took a turn. A sweet Golden seated 5 feet away looked at P for a bit and P became visibly uncomfortable and barked at the Golden with the “I don’t like that” bark. D guided an introduction and P was okay with it (no barking, sniffed the Golden Girl) but continued low barks and vigilance once done - she kept looking at the Golden when she previously had been focused on D for nearly 45 minutes!  

The drive home was quiet, I’m so disappointed - I wanted a nice, calm, outgoing and confident dog and the breeder said P was all of those things!  It’s so hard to like her right now - I feel terrible feeling that way considering she’s AFRAID - but she’s aloof in general and so bonding has been hard. I previously had a very sweet affectionate dog (she passed) and I struggle with comparison and I miss feeling that loving bond. P is afraid of men, children and some dogs. I’m afraid she’ll continue to escalate and we won’t ever have a warm relationship. At this point having a puppy is lonely and full of fear instead of joyful and fun. 

I hope writing about this will allow me to sleep better and gain perspective on her progress - baby steps are hard to see when you’re looking for leaps. I have no vanity that anyone will ever read this. 

Seymour

This story feels a little weird to tell, because it’s so new. Seymour is still only seven months old. He’s not fully grown. He still is very much a kitten. But he’s a little dude that completely blindsided me when we found him.

My local shelter was having a really hard kitten season. It started early and ended late in our area this year, and there was no room in the shelter. It’s a county shelter that doesn’t turn animals away. Any animals. When I went in to foster, they had a pig, a pigeon, and rabbits, not just your usual dogs and cats.

We had fostered before, but it had been a single kitten through a different rescue that I was no longer keen on using. At least with this shelter, if the cats got sick, I could take them to the shelter’s vet and have them seen by a professional, not the back of the van diagnosis I had experienced with my previous foster.

I told the shelter workers that my husband was still on the fence. I wasn’t working at the time, so the work would fall entirely on me, but he was still hesitant. So they said “Okay, we’ll start you out with something easy. Here’s a litter of four, almost five week old kittens. They’re all healthy, all weaned to wet food. They just need to be brought up to weight to be fixed, and that should be about three to four weeks.” (I am taking the briefest moment to mention as an aside - this is not the post to argue about the age of spay/neutering. This is the shelter’s policy and that was that. I could either comply with their policy or I could not volunteer with them). 

I took home this litter of four beautiful kittens. Three girls, one boy. They were unnamed, so I got to decide what they would be called. A friend suggested naming them after Steven Universe characters, so I did. They were Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl, and Steven.

The kittens honestly were hardly work for me. They were so young we handled them frequently, inviting people over so they could experience as many different people as possible. Their little personalities flourished and I felt so, SO honored to get to know these amazing little animals. Garnet was confident, willing to rough house, explore, approach new people without hesitation. She was a little more afraid of dogs (unfortunately without dogs in our house her only experience with them was adoption events). Amethyst was a little more shy. She would play with her siblings and with humans, but wound up getting bullied out of her food bowl if I didn’t give her a separate dish. She learned to push back and make sure she got what she needed, and went from the skinny little “we’re not sure if she’s going to thrive” threshold to feisty little girl. Pearl was a cuddle bug. We would pick her up to give her medicine, and I always had to do her last, because she would fall asleep in my arms every time I held her.

Then there was Steven. 

Independent, confident, curious, played beautifully with his sisters. If they had too much, he learned to walk away instead of pressing his luck with them, and was able to entertain himself with nearby toys or people.

He had no fear, and when their two week quarantine period was up, he met the household cats and absolutely meshed with them immediately. Keeping him separate from the rest of the house in the “kitten room” was darn near impossible, and he made his best attempt to escape and explore the house every time we opened the door.

As spay/neuter-day came closer, kittens began to get spoken for. Amethyst was first. A friend of mine messaged me and asked to meet her. It was love at first site. Amethyst is still Amethyst. Next was Pearl. Funny enough, Pearl now lives with my previous foster, Chainsaw, who is now Alice. Pearl also kept her name. Garnet was next, after a long push on social media to find a loving home. Garnet is now Widget. I still get updates on all three girls, and they are amazing and I’m so proud of them. (For privacy’s sake of their new homes, I can’t share current pictures). 

But Steven, for all our socializing, was so attached to me that it was tough to imagine not waking up and seeing his wonderful little face. Simcoe and Citra had also taken an IMMENSE interest in the kittens. Every single morning, we woke up with a mountain of toys laid in front of the kitten door, gifts for the babies they knew were on the other side. We became concerned that Simcoe would grow depressed with the absence of kittens. Normally, yes, cats can get over these things, but as a semi-feral and fairly sickly young cat, we have to keep Simcoe’s stress levels down as much as possible. And oddly enough, Simcoe is less stressed when she can take care of other cats.

I had the moment when I had to start taking Steven to adoption events, and knowing he would have to leave, I was sad, but knew I would get over it. The girls were sweet and wonderful, but they were never mine. Steven would come to me no matter who was in the room. He would climb on me and sleep on me, and while I did everything in my power to socialize him with as many people as possible, he still loved other people, he just preferred to be with me. Removing myself from his life for the sake of his care and his ability to be adopted out would be negligent to him, so I had to continue caring for him.

So my husband said, “He really gets along with the other cats, doesn’t he?”

He did.

“You’re going to be really upset when he leaves, aren’t you?”

I was.

So my husband paid Steven’s adoption fee as an anniversary gift. (Steven, mind you, was not the gift, we discussed his adoption prior and both agreed we could realistically home him here). 

But what to name him? We considered “Mosaic”, and would call him Moe for short, to keep with the theme of hops since he got along so well with Simcoe and Citra. But it didn’t fit. He already had an S name. We considered keeping Steven, but without the girls the naming convention wasn’t quite right.

A few other names fell by. Zevran was a tempting runner up, but my husband wasn’t terribly fond of it, and try as I might to call him that, he didn’t FEEL like a Zevran (Sorry, Dragon Age fans).

Remembering one of my favorite movies/musical productions, Little Shop of Horrors, I laughed and thought of the name Seymour. My husband liked it, but not for the same reason I did.

“Seymour Skinner, from the Simpsons!” He said. “Or Seymour Asses, like from Futurama...” I let the fact that Seymour Asses had been a dog slide, because as I called “Seymour”, over he ran, meowing happily. We didn’t name him. Seymour picked his name.

We did our usual slow introductions, but as always, the resident cats pleasantly surprised me with how easily they allowed Seymour into their group. Within a week they were allowgrooming and sleeping together. When they would play, Seymour could understand who he could play rough with, and who didn’t like to play as rough. Citra took a shine to him immediately, and Heimdall began caring for him like the nurturing big dude he’s always been.

Seymour is my little shadow. He comes when he’s called, he almost always needs to be in the same room as me, and if I’m sitting on the couch, he’s near constantly on my lap. That being said, he’s also the absolute friendliest cat in the house. While Heimdall is a relaxed and easy going cat, Seymour seeks out new people and will rub up to them and meow at them for attention within moments of someone walking through the door.

He’s also photogenic as anything. He just loves the attention he gets when I take pictures of him, so he’ll sit there and just let me snap countless photos because he knows it means I’m looking at him.

I adore all my cats. Each one has a piece of my heart for a different reason. Seymour was the final piece to our family to make our home and lives so wonderful and full. He’s comic relief. He’s a wonderful foible for every single cat in the house. He’s best buddies with Heimdall, a playmate for Sif, a partner in crime for Citra, and a snuggle buddy for Simcoe. 

And I couldn’t imagine my life without every single one of them.

Hid in the little hut immediately. But I took out the black and white one first, held it, tried to rub food on its little mouth, put it to the bowl and he ate a little of each. The lighter Calico watched big-eyed, then let me do the same, but only drank the mother’s milk replacement. The darker Calico had a harder time being picked up and held. The others didn’t like being held near my heartbeat. They were trying to squirm but did fine being pet on my lap. I rubbed their heads, legs and feet and sides of their mouths and faces... But, the darker Calico was more squirmy on my lap, but calm when I held it next to my heartbeat. Anyway, still a new environment without their mama, so it will take a little time to adjust. At least they’re getting a supplement and won’t dehydrate. I left moistened kitten chow and water overnight last night, but it didn’t look like they touched it. The wet food is kitten formula. I’ll hold them and check on them overnight too from now on. Still hope to find a foster or rescue place ASAP! They drank all the milk.

4:36, Man, it’s hot out today (94), so we have the big garage door open most of the way, as well as the side garage door, the ceiling fan on, a small stand fan and the swamp cooler (on low, so not to be too loud)... Harper just came to eat, and after started doing her real loud mama call... heading up my driveway where the babies are... They didn’t start meowing back. I dread that! I went out and talked to her and some noise scared her off. But, it’s supposed to be hot this week and I can’t let them get overheated. When I checked on them a little bit before this all happened, their noses were wet, and they ate some wet food that I added a lot of water to, so they got water, then drank the mother’s milk replacement. So far, they’re okay... but, it’s definitely too hot for them. It’s finally starting to cool down. And the nights have been damp and cold. Not a good combination. One place said to send pics, so I sent videos too, but not sure they can help... Said they would forward them to another person who may be able to foster. Fingers crossed! Grrr... everyone else is saying they’re too full, but to set up a profile and maybe eventually they’ll get in contact. The one who said they’d try to help turns out mostly deals with dogs! So, I don’t know what I’m going to do. And, no one can help, but all say, “Whatever you do, don’t turn them in to a shelter. Most are kill shelters, even if they say they aren’t.” But, what choice do I have if I can’t keep them or care for them and no one can help? Our city only gives them 5 days to be adopted.

7:00 - It’s killing me inside. I’m not kidding. Harper has been doing her mama call all day, waiting in all the areas she had them. She followed me around the corner, looking under cars, meowing, through the fence, meowing, and of course they’re not coming... she even looked at me and meowed the mama call, like telling me. I keep trying to comfort her and tell her they’re okay, I have them, and how sorry I am, but she doesn’t understand. I don’t know how they communicate certain things to each other, but she even had Luna looking in the driveway across the street and Luna never goes over there! I feel so terrible and heartbroken for her and them, but I had to! And, my aunt wanted them saved. Now she’s bitching about how the other cats are too upset, how this and that, and all I could suggest was to let them go, so they’re together again, but they’d probably just end up hurt or dead... seriously. No one on this block likes cats. They don’t care to be careful about them either. If you would have heard the neighbors attitudes, like it was so inconvenient for them and more. I said to my brother that Harper’s stressed, and the one girl was all, “She’s just a cat. She’s fine. I’m the one who’s stressed...” and bitched about not being able to move her car. She said she was just going to move it and that the kittens would run when she starts the engine. I said fine. I can’t stop you. Let me leave first, because I don’t want to hear them screaming or see them get run over! She changed her tune. Her mom, “Well, whose cats are these anyway?” Arguing that there’s no way the cat could climb up in the engine from underneath. I had to plead to get her to open the hood... and right on top the first one! And on. I told them if they just let me get them all now they won’t have to worry about it again. Otherwise, they’ll be dealing with kittens in their driveway... that’s where Harper used to always stay and sleep, under the warm cars, and we’ve been having cold nights, so I’m sure that’s why she moved them there. She can react fast enough. The babies can’t! Even Angie said... “You know how I am about cats! I don’t like them! When I saw the kittens I told Celeste to let you know, because you’re so good with cats and I know you would save them and so we don’t have to worry about more cats or kittens here”...exactly! At least Angie understands. I’m just sad and really frustrated to the point of tears. I feel so bad all around and I can’t do anything about it. 

I’m worried about her. Other ferals didn’t have the problem she has... hoping her milk dries up soon before infection sets in. Will probably try to trap her soon and ask the vet to care for her mammary glands (maybe just a shot to dry it up), but at least check it out, and do spaying, too... with a dose of antibiotics after. The problem is I’d care for her a few days in the cage out back, and the babies are still here, they could potentially hear each other. So, hoping to get the babies in a rescue or foster first, but I’ll have to keep an eye on Harper. 

Harper’s sniffing all around, searching everywhere, especially near the corner house where she first moved them... looking under the cars in the driveway around the corner, going to the gate and calling them, when she sees me looking at me doing the mama call, like telling or asking me about the babies. Earlier she rolled on her side in front of Luna, like to show or tell Luna. Every time I reach for her, even if bending down at her level, she runs... I want to be able to massage around them or feel for any lumps, etc. Then Dave, from the next street over, comes walking his Pit Bull, without a leash, after telling me she chases cats... the dog starts sniffing around the tall grass of the lawn at the corner, Harper sees right as she calling for the babies, and starts running in the direction of the dog, like to protect her babies. Holy shit my heart sunk even deeper than it’s felt all day... Thank God she listened and stopped when I got in front of her. What scares me is that the coyotes could smell the kittens, and she is full of milk, wandering around relentlessly looking for them. I pray no coyotes come by any time soon again! 🙏🏻
