Massive Attack remain one of the best outfits in the genre they popularized thanks to them not following the rules of the idiom that much despite being a prime example of that. Makes no sense, correct? The same thing could be said about Ritual Spirit, one of their latest releases. The EP found them making a comeback with Tricky who was one of their early members. They needed him, since they sound highly rejuvenated on the disc, i.e. they resemble themselves at their best again with all their peculiarities. Still, they don't do a facsimile of their pasts, they use the latter to find the pathways towards the future. They're in the elder statesmen mode, mind you, but they don't find themselves clamoring for the days of their youth, they let their mature selves influence their decisions.

Brandt Brauer Frick - Multi Faith Prayer Room - continuing their triangulation between techno, synth-pop, and serial minimalism
Brandt Brauer Frick is back with “Multi Faith Prayer Room” their fifth album and probably their mots ambitious to date . Recorded over the past two years, it includes collaborations with Mykki Blanco, Azekel, Marina Herlop, Kom_I, Sophie Hunger and Duane Harden. Their new album is a great example of their modern and hybrid approach to electronic music. The band still combines acoustic drumming and drums machines, syncopated layered bass and hectic Steve Reich-inspired piano to create simultaneously analogic and synthetic techno tracks.

Oh! I have decided to do Friday Recs. Every Friday I will recommend something! yay!
Film: Shiny Shrimps (2019) - apparently not very well liked, too stereotypical and maybe not great, but I am enjoying it (I'm halfway through). I am surprised it's 2019? It feels older. But it's so far good fun, easy to watch, I like the characters, watching them ride across countryside in open top bus with a rainbow flag flying behind like a tail is great. Also their swimming trunks are hilarious.
[plaintext: Film, Shiny Shrimps 2019, end plaintext].
Book: Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie. Not my recommendation, from my grandma and put here in the name of reminding myself to get it. Baba says that it took her two tries, at first it was not gripping her but then in a cafe someone told her she should really keep going, so she started again and once she got into it she said it's like nothing she had read before. It was such a good story and great writing and full of wonderful ideas.
[Plaintext: Book, Midnight's Children, end plaintext].
Podcast: Hi Nay, written, directed, produced, and created by Motzie Dapul and co-produced and co-created by Reg Geli. A supernatural horror story, episodic with a really gripping over-arching plot. Character driven, creepy, so warmly written and so well acted and produced, really great sound design. The story telling is so skilled. I just find it very welcoming and full of love. Link goes to the YouTube channel 'about' page, they are doing a halloween thing streaming all through October.
[Plaintext: Podcast, Hi Nay, end plaintext].
Gave my money to: a fundraiser to get wheelchairs and help for healthcare for two Jolliff and Azekel. They run Black Trans Foundation which funds therapy for Black Trans people in the UK, which I think is a good organisation.
[Plaintext: Gave my money to. End plaintext].
Would I really recommend it?: I am currently watching/reading Agatha Raisin (TV show is Acorn TV, books by MC Beaton), it's super light and absolutely fine and the TV show has a found-family vibe that I love. I am low key obsessed.
[Plaintext: Would I really recommend it? End plaintext].
That's it for this week from me, what have you all loved consuming though? tell me what you love so I can join in :)
See you next Friday!

When you get this, share 5 good things that happened to you in 2023, 5 songs that defined your year, 5 shows you discovered, and 5 friends you made. Then send this to 5 people to spread some happy memories 💕✨️🎉
Thank you anonymous! ok, let's see:
5 good things: I got stranded because of a snow storm for two days, but in a place I could have stayed for forever. I had an important, long overdue conversation with a close friend about our feelings, which took a lot of pressure off from both of us. I was able to make my home look like my home at last with colour and art. I found my creative inspiration again. The arrow hair pin of dreams.
5 songs that defined my year: I spent a lot of time listening to a certain character set playlist, so these are all for character reasons and what I think fits the atmosphere of their world. Mezzanine - Massive Attack, Never let me down again - Depeche Mode, Secret place - CloZee, Earth Born - Soft Ballet, Ritual Spirit - Massive Attack, Azekel
5 friends I made: Paris - got seated next to each other, clicked immediately, forever envious how someone can so effortlessly steal Brian Slade's 18th century inspired style. Sasi, Ajay and Babi - spending their first winter in snow, we share a work place. Ali - did some language practice
edit, I accidentally skipped the 5 shows I discovered: Lost You Forever, My Journey to You, Blue Eye Samurai, Yellowjackets, Mysterious Lotus Casebook
