Awataguchi Family
Of the night time, when everyone is settled into bed, Ichigo always ends up with two or three of his brothers sleeping in his arms.
Cuddle piles are a frequent, probably weekly occurrence. Everyone’s on top of each other, many vying for the spot on Ichigo’s lap. Cuddle piles also happen when certain swords are feeling upset, they’d be at the centre, and everyone would play various games, or talk interesting events, or anything, really, that would put a smile on their brother’s face.
Atsushi can be surprisingly good at easing others worries, though he doesn’t seem to realise it, when they’re worried about something going well, or something relating to their past, it’s the way he talks them through it, objectively, that can put them at ease. And if things don’t go well, then they have him and the rest of their brothers by their side.
Gokotai and Akita, often times, are among the first to cry holding each other, when ghost stories are told. They’re the first to let out a scream, startling the citadel, when it’s dark and Midare shines a light over his face.
Snowball fights at the beginning of winter, always happen. Various swords get dragged into it by Namazuo, or Midare and Houchou. In a citadel with the Awataguchi family gathered together, you know winter has started when you wake up to the sound of a massive snowball fight, and everyone playing around.
Swords like Maeda and Gokotai would be off making a snowman together in the distance, chatting away and enjoying the fun, while trying not to get hit by a stray snowball.

[ continuing from here | @zantedeschia-praesul ]
After the Awataguchi's performance (and some others, which eventually devolved into some very lively karaoke), Yuichi and Kogitsunemaru walked their guests back to their room (complete with "please, don't hesitate to wake me up if you need something" and "join us in the dining hall in the morning!") and then each retreated to their own respective rooms to get some sleep after the long day.
Yuichi slept much easier than he had the few nights before. The antsy excitement and anxiety of meeting and hosting someone new was gone, and in its place the relief and pleasant surprise of indeed a new friend.
He rose early, though, and made sure to join Kasen in the kitchen to prepare a breakfast and tea for himself and Saseki to share-- much to Kasen's delight.
However, through the preparations, the ambient shhhhhhhhhh of the rain outside gradually grew fainter and fainter, until suddenly... It was quiet, save for just a few faint 'tap.....tap.......tap....' every so often.
Yuichi looked up from the broccoli he was chopping, and out the window. The rain seemed to have reduced to just a sprinkling, and the dreary gray that usually cloaked the citadel was brightening, just so.
"Oh," he smiled, then looking to Kasen, Shokudaikiri, and Ookurikara who had come to prepare breakfast together. "I think Saseki-san's gift has been saving its power for today..."
After a quick moment of contemplation, Yuichi set his knife and broccoli down and stood up. "Excuse me, guys. I'll be back shortly."
And indeed, he was back, after a few moments of checking and talking with Konnosuke.
"Once we're done with breakfast, you guys take the day off. I'll let everyone else know too, when it's time to eat-- I think everyone deserves a chance to enjoy the day, hm?"
"Oh? Are you sure, aruji?" Shokudaikiri inquired. "What about lunch and dinner? I don't mind, really--"
Yuichi raised a hand to pause him. "I've just checked our expenses, and we've been doing pretty decently on our spending for the most part. We have some money to play with, including enough to order something delivered... If you like, you can help me sort that out later, but I want you to get out of the kitchen and relax or have fun, okay?"
---------------
By the time everyone is in the dining hall, the sun is out in full, with only a few drip-drops scattering about. ("A fox wedding~," Kogitsunemaru remarks fondly.) Yuichi announces to everyone that today shall be a free day-- no chores, no field work, just... a day to enjoy the sun.
With his breakfast, he makes to meet with Saseki.

I actually love the new Touken Ranbu anime, aside from the artstyle is so good, the characters relationship here in the citadel are more emphasize (in a dramatic way) and I love how they change the focus characters every sequels and I can see the other main focus in the previous ones as the side chara 😭 Like Yamatonokami having a little screen time on other's story. I love it sm, I really hope the Awataguchi have their own focus too 😭 Am I asking too much?!? But I can't die without having to watch that!! It can't be inside my imagination forever... and this gold anime just have 8eps and 3eps are released as of now, it was kinda short but I guess it's still kinda worth it since the artstyle is so good. This is the closest version of artstyle to the game and I was so shocked when I see this! Like I just saw the trailer for the upcoming Hanamaru, right??? And then I saw this ver so I was like wth where did this come from? Okay bye I love u Zuo and Bami sm

i couldn't stop thinking of that ateez as touken ranbu swords fanart so i showed it to @lilplilplilp and we ended up brainstorming what sword school designs would work best with txt. (no gous because picking the sword school that is literally Idol Swords is cheating.) this is what we came up with so far:
soobin: kunihiro. this is purely based on vibes and aesthetics? i think he would look good in the trademark kunihiro pinstripes with some additional layers + details to give it lots of depth. but also his shyness & insecurities remind me of yamanbagiri, while his dependability reminds me a bit of horikawa!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yeonjun: sanjou. ok confession time my original choice for him was kotetsu for purely self-indulgent reasons -- nagasone is my oshi (yes i know he's technically not a kotetsu but still) and yeonjun is my bias so ofc i'm gonna combine the two and ascend straight into heaven. but we also thought of sanjou bc yeonjun gets teased a lot for being old and sanjou is the school of old man swords. and i think he'd pull off the heavy, dramatic draping of sanjou outfits well! specifically i'd put him in a kogitsunemaru-esque design bc 1) they are both foxes and 2) kogi's sleeveless IA outfit with the low neckline??? yeonjun would rock that and also i would die
Tumblr media Tumblr media
beomgyu: kanesada. this was the easiest one to match tbh? kanesadas in the game have two overarching traits: 1) they are serious / passionate about the arts and 2) they are unhinged. kasen is the poster child for this but i think ningen mukotsu is also a good example: he's loud and wild on the battlefield but very serious and polite when it comes to things like calligraphy and tea ceremonies. beomgyu is also loud and unhinged on variety shows but give him a serious art project and he will work on it intensely & give it his all (see: to do ep 67. also any time he produces a song). and in general there's something about beomgyu's styling that is SO kanesada coded to me?? my pfp is literally kasen wearing his fairy of shampoo mubank performance outfit (thank u @/riukki for the comm)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
taehyun: kotetsu. this one is also based on vibes and it was lilp who came up with this! idk taehyun is very sturdy-looking and reliable (like nagasone) but he can also be cute and playful (like urashima) so he could pull off the kotetsu vibe. plus that this is kang "tinnitus dance break abs flash secret weapon" taehyun himself so i think the skin-showier stuff would work on him just fine
Tumblr media Tumblr media
huening kai: okay we haven't decided on one for him yet?? my first instinct is awataguchi because there's something very homey and familial and sunshiney about kai that fits the awataguchi vibe. also he could wear shorts and it would be reminiscent of his first mix & max outfit? BUT ALSO we think he'd make a really good yari. he's tall and a bit awkward but also fits in with his peers & is loved, and we sense otegine vibes from that
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway if you made it this far thank you for reading my silly little crossover post, i honestly don't know who the target audience for this even is lol. i just wanted to talk about this bc it's been on my mind a lot today.

OK, so the upcoming adaptation of the Swordsmith Village arc has me in a chokehold, and as such, I've been thinking a lot about the village itself. I've been wondering- have there been any notable instances of whole villages devoted to Swordsmithing? And as a slight, more KNY tangent, how do you think Gyokko managed to locate the village wherein the story happens? (Definitely could have phrased that more elegantly, but whatevs)
Slight tangent? This like two different questions, Wyn, how sly! Just kidding. Before I get too distracted by SWORDS SWORDS SWORDS, I'm going to set aside the Gyokko question and say I have no idea, maybe Ufotable will give us something come April? Perhaps he's got spying methods through his pots, and one of his pots got sold along the route to the village? Perhaps he sent his fish to spy on the conversations between birds, or perhaps one of his fish got caught and eaten in the village? Perhaps while looking for the Blue Spider Lily, this was a totally accidental discovery? I handled this question in my Demon Sibling AU: Version Uzui as having used ninja abilities to spy on conversations between Kakushi and slayers and crows and used that to piece together a location. As for swords, instead of villages solely dedicated to sword production, what you often found was neighborhoods dedicated to a certain kind of product--pottery, textiles, oil, etc--and in the case of a town arising around, say, the construction of an emperor's tomb or a Sengoku era castle, what came first was the workers, and then the town to support the livelihood of the workers. For places that are still famous for sword production (or as the case usually is today, kitchen knife production), it was usually a certain part of town instead of the village a whole, or at least, that would be my guess. These craftsman ultimately were taking clients to make their paycheck however much it was that they cared about their craft, but in the case of Kimetsu no Yaiba, the swordsmiths live by a mission, and the village and Corp support them such that they can be single-mindedly devoted to their craft and not have want of economic prosperity. The whole village can and is be built around their work. And, to make a community around sword production, it typically involved masters of many different crafts--the tatara kiln master who produces the iron, the blacksmith who shapes the blade, the sword polisher, the sword engraver, the craftsman who fits a hilt to it, the craftsman who creates its sheath, and so on. We don't know if every swordsmith in KnY's village can do everything themselves (or perhaps likes doing everything themselves), but with each of them being such strike disciplines, some division of labor and specialization wouldn't surprise me.
Looking back in Japanese history for swordsmiths who produced any any sharp and pretty thing for killing humans as their clients liked, the famous spots various depending on the time period. For example, in the Heian era, the Awataguchi area (the far east end of Sanjo street) of Kyoto was the spot of town to go for finding a swordsmith, though swords produced by masters throughout the country still found their way to the capital too. Then as we move from Heian through Sengoku, the land of Bizen (modern day eastern Okayama Prefecture) was the top producer of swords in this era, and although Sagami (modern day Kanagawa Prefecture) wasn't as prolific, they had some super famous swords produced there. Mino (modern day Gifu Prefecture) didn't come onto the sword producing stage until later, but they supplied a lot of weapons to Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu's armies. Although these areas (and many more) become associated with sword production and their own respective styles and aesthetics, they were perhaps better known by the famous individual swordsmiths they produced.
Nowadays, these are considered the "Big Three" spots for Japanese blade production: Sakai City in Osaka Prefecture, Sanjo City in Niigata Prefecture, and Seki City in Gifu Prefecture. I've mentioned Seki on this blog before, as this is where LiSA is from, and I have personal connections there. I haven't been back since long before my KnY obsession, but I can't believe no one ever told me that part of the city's history and took me the museum! There's also a parade in which knife producers walk around and show off their handiwork, while talking about this with a coworker from another part of Gifu, it was as she was saying "it seems scary" that I was like "THAT SOUNDS AWESOME, I WANNA SEE THAT."
I'm also very partial to eastern Shimane Prefecture, not as much known for the sword production as the iron production. Nowdays, Okuiizumo is the only producer of tamagahane (iron ore of the right quality for Japanese swords), and nearby Yasugi is a major producer of high quality steel for everything from industrial use to kitchen blades. Part of what I really wanted to express in my write-up of sword production as it relates to Kimetsu no Yaiba was that you can't focus solely on the swordsmiths and their direct actions on shaping the blade; Japanese swords are product of nature and management of the finite raw materials directly contributes to the beauty of the final product. Even back in the Heian era, these materials would travel long distances to reach the famous hands of renown swordsmiths, and even after the shaping of the blades, they would still be passed around from craftsman to craftsman before reaching the hands of a master swordsman.

Am I a bad person for thinking our sword boys are useless when it comes to certain events, for the lack of a better word? I remember a crossover comic where Gilgamesh from Fate laughs like a villain he is while destroying the citadel, and Hachisuka is begging him to stop and Mikazuki and Nakigitsune are sitting ducks.
You're not a bad person for thinking that. But it does take a lot of willpower to endure watching some of them get repeatedly curbstomped in certain events lol.
Some sword types do shine more than others. The rest require a little extra love poured into them.
As far as I remember, these were my loadouts for major events:
🌴 Regiment Battles (Seaside): Tantowames to pick off any stragglers that survived the double water cannons in extreme maps. Okinawa trio for the event bonuses, which really helped with speedruning for the event reward items/swords.
💥 Regiment Battles: Tantowames had the most survivability in the extreme map night stages and pretty much all the chaos stages. Probably tossed in a waki, uchi, or tachi wame somewhere.
💰 Underground Treasure Chest: Hakata (my little maneki neko, koban loan shark, and primary income provider), whichever Awataguchi has 2x exp bonus, and a naginata for floors 50 and lower. Teams got shuffled every 10 floors after that.
⚔️ War Training Expansion, Edo Castle Investigations: Whoever is getting the 2x exp special. (Got Sohaya from ubu 99 to kiwame 55 and Tomoe gained an extra kiwame 28 before I finally sent him off to training)
🎵 Village of Treasures: Mostly consisted of tachi, uchigatana, or oodachi kiwames for the tankiness to make it through koi-koi level 4.

Lonely Nights
Sayo can’t seem to sleep tonight. What shall he do?
original publish date. 2 july 2021
Notes. third-person point-of-view, fluff, Sayo Samonji, Shishiou
~400 words
Poor Sayo lied in his stuffy futon alone. The poor boy hadn’t yet met his “brothers” as his current master called them. The saniwa he called master had yet to forge them in the smithy or find them on missions, and so tonight, Sayo lied in his futon in the large tatami mat room on a warm summer night.
Being in the darkness was normal to Sayo and being alone was even more so familiar to him. He wasn’t sure why on this night, he felt the need to shake off his covers and travel out on the veranda.
The night of the new moon made the outside halls feel even darker than usual. It didn’t matter though; Sayo knew the steps he had to take. He walked down the hall, surrounded by the chirps of the cicadas and the steps he took on the wood.
Once reaching the end of the hall, he turned left and quietly opened the sliding door of the familiar yet odd western style room placed in this home. He walked in and closed the door behind, as quietly as he did on his missions, he thought. He went towards the one and only bed in the entire citadel, and with his eyes already adjusted, Sayo studied Shishiou’s form in his bed.
Shishiou was the only one of his “family,” the saniwa had told Sayo, and like Sayo, Shishiou would sleep alone at night. More importantly, to Sayo, Shishiou had been Sayo’s “big brother” in this new form and household. While other families like the Awataguchi and Sanjo already had each other, Sayo still had to wait and wait and wait to become a “family” for the saniwa, and so, Shishiou who had no one else, took care of Sayo.
Shishiou faced towards the wall, curled away from where Sayo stood. It would be a little hard to do, but Sayo had done it before.
Sayo walked to the end of the bed and quietly crawled in. He crawled slowly and as softly as he could, so he wouldn’t wake up poor Shishiou. Little Sayo crawled in between Shishiou’s arms, and despite it being a warm summer night, Sayo fell into a deep sleep, feeling safe with his other “big brother.”
