“Violetkit felt numb. She stumbled after Needlepaw, Sleek-paw and Juniperpaw flanking her. Her thoughts whirled. Was it true? Had she brought only trouble to Shadow Clan?
Overwhelmed, she followed Needlepaw through the entrance tunnel. As it closed around her, she glanced back and saw the familiar dens. She was leaving another home. Was she making the right choice?
Her eye caught Rowanstar's. His gaze was as hard as ice. It's not a choice. Despair washed through her pelt. I'm not wanted here. I never truly was.”
— Thunder and Shadow pg. 177
I’ve been wanting to draw this scene for a long while now. I think I first made an attempt a few years ago but I didn’t like how it was progressing and I scrapped it. But I finally did it.
Boy, was this an experiment with perspectives and especially backgrounds. I hope it looks ok.
Cats seen, from forefront to furthest away: Needlepaw, Violetkit, Tawnypelt, Rowanstar, Tigerheart, Leafpool, Puddlepaw, Dawnpelt, Crowfrost, and Ratscar.
Puddlepaw, Crowfrost, and Ratscar are cats I’ve never drawn nor had a solid design for so I kind of just winged it. I decided for Crowfrost I’d pull from the black and white cat on the cover of Thunder and Shadow (pretty sure that it’s suppose to be Violetpaw, but I see her as being more white than black). Ratscar I just made a mean, raggedy, old looking cat (he’s one of the elders in ShadowClan that’s constantly questioning if Violetkit belongs in the Clan). Puddlepaw isn’t too special in what I came up with, but I like him anyway. Additionally, I took inspiration from PureSpiritFlower’s design of Rowanstar for mine.

I respect the Beenose hustle, she is great and deserved better
Yes i agreed, she is very underrated and I want her to get a bit popularized. By requesting everyone that is open request design canon warrior cat characters.

what’s up with BB! Puddleshine? been having thoughts about him recently lol. i find it funny that rowanstar grabbed this random child from the nursery and was like ‘bam here’s our brand new doctor and spiritual leader everyone’
(*shaking twelve year old in the background*)
You know what's pretty cool about AVoS, buried underneath the slog of it all? The thing I keep going back to about this arc, in spite of how annoying it is to be forced to say in ThunderClan as everything interesting happens off-screen?
The way that so, so many young warriors are horrifically traumatized by both the structure of the Clans, and the Kin that they turn to.
It's a shame that the Erins were so committed to the idea of the Clan social structure NOT being the problem, because this whole arc is a perfect time to show how flawed it structurally is. LET these kids have a point, that maybe they were rebelling against something broken, but Darktail was a malicious actor who exploited their naivety to serve HIS ends.
A recap of what's happening in BB!AvoS before I explain my intentions with the Puddy Boy;
The big problem that I want Rowanstar to display is a problem that ALL the leaders of this time period also have. Commitment to Clan rivalry.
After Firestar was killed in AVoS by Dark Forest warriors, Bramblestar considers diplomacy secondary as a tactic. "ThunderClan will not be bullied any longer. We have been too soft with the other Clans for too long; and they have humiliated us by taking advantage of our kindness." (Note: Harespring and Breezepelt being part of the assassination patrol is not revealed until TBC. For MAXIMUM drama reveal.)
He escalated a border dispute that Firestar had worked closely and intimately with ShadowClan to resolve; a fight for a knoutberry patch on their border, just before Winter.
After Russetfur died in this painful battle, Blackstar backslid hard from his redemption arc. This caused the Thunder/Shadow alliance to dissolve towards the end of OotS, ending a friendship between the two Clans that had lasted through all of Po3.
He was open to Sol's manipulation, and while Tawnypelt was trying to fight the Dark Forest trainees who took over ShadowClan in the meantime... Rowanclaw became deputy by organizing a patrol of cats to remind Blackstar how much he means to them.
So Rowanstar inherits the Clan with this in mind. ShadowClan solves SHADOWCLAN'S problems. "ThunderClan had a quarrel with WindClan, but decided that we were their enemy. Leaving ourselves open for betrayal was a mistake; if we cannot handle our own problems, we will inevitably succumb to them when our so-called 'allies' don't come to help." (Note: he isn't completely wrong. His words are borderline prophetic for what's about to happen.)
Onestar has a smug chuckle at this. Since taking leadership, he's been appealing to the strongest, hardest members of his Clan. Those who once tried to kill him for his "weakness" in the Civil War. The "lesson" ShadowClan learned is one that he's known since the day Onewhisker died and Onestar was born, on the night of that sabotaged muirburn. "That so-called peace was always a farce. We are warriors of the four Clans; it was always going to come down to honor, and putting ourselves first. My WindClan isn't foolish enough to pretend like ThunderClan ever acted in anything but their own, hidden self-interest."
And Mistystar respects the direction Bramblestar has taken his Clan in, and approves of the "honesty" that the Clans are now showing. "As the branches of the honeysuckle fight and win the light for themselves, sometimes there are beautiful flowers that die in the shade. We can mourn the end of an era, and prepare for a future that will be made all the sweeter for our shared struggle. This is the way of the Clans, and StarClan's solemn light shines upon us all." (Note: god I love writing Misty's speeches)
In the family tree reworkings, Rowanstar is now the brother of Littlecloud. Sons of Brokenstar, honor-sired for Newtspeck.
Littlecloud... is suffering from early onset Alzheimer's.
He didn't want to choose an apprentice after Flametail's horrible death, heartbroken and stressed out, especially when he couldn't reach his nephew through contact with StarClan.
He can't remember, anymore, that Flametail was freed. He keeps forgetting this, over and over
He keeps ending up in different times of his life, where he's best friends with Cinderpelt and still calling Leafpool by her pre-Honor Title name, where he's inventing a mobility device for Wildfur, where he's still escaping the plague and before he knew his mentor caused it, where he's on the Great Journey...
Rowanstar is in a lot of pain, watching his brother forget so many things, scared and confused half the time. He doesn't want to believe that this is really the end, or that... many of these cats are now so young they can't recognize the various eras that Littlecloud is finding himself in.
Puddleshine and Slatefur are going to remain in Pinenose's litter. Either Lion or Birch MIGHT get shuffled to another one; and ALSO the shuffler might survive the Kin. (SO voice which one you want to survive, if you have a preference!)
SO, Violetshine has either two or three adopted siblings... plus another.
Pinenose's oldest surviving child is Happypaw. Happy is the half-sibling of Puddle/Slate-- the death of Weaselkit in the Great Battle caused his parents (Pinenose and Owlclaw) to break up.
(this is why I'm thinking about just reducing the litter to Puddle/Slate, so Violet has three major adoption-siblings to remember instead of four.)
And now we're ready to talk about Puddleshine.
He isn't the first young cat to be shoved into an extremely high-pressure position because of a Cleric becoming incapacitated. Kestrelflight was also forced to become the holy speaker of his people when he was far, far too young, after Barkface died in TNP. He dealt with this obediently, with only Jayfeather ever really being able to get him to think about it in a different light.
Unlike Kestrel, Puddlekit did voice that he was interested in becoming a Cleric, in BB. But he was too young to be properly making that choice, to know what he was getting into. He mentioned it practically offhandedly, and BOOM Rowanstar had rolled him into the position.
But Puddlepaw has a deep sense of responsibility. "Wise beyond his years"-- likely because of how tumultuous his home life was.
His mother's oldest child, Happypaw, was openly a bully of his half-siblings. Pinenose distanced herself from him as a result, causing Happy to be closer to Owlclaw, who was still not over Weaselkit's death.
But Puddle's Ba Spikefur is not a cat who handles his kit's emotions well. Instead, he encourages ambition, tells him to get back at his half-sibling by being more influential than that twerp could ever be.
Puddle will often go to Violet, the new POV, to vent about these things.
And one thing he mentions to her is how amazing Kestrelflight is, when he gets to meet him at the half-moon conferences. He learns SO MUCH from him, it's like he GETS what he's going through...
Puddle doesn't even feel sure that Littlecloud knows what he's doing anymore. If he's learning the right information at all.
But Rowanstar won't DO anything about Littlecloud-- and he CERTAINLY isn't about to let Puddlepaw go train under someone else's Cleric.
As a result of this, Puddlepaw becomes a VERY important member of Sleekpaw's little group. He wasn't one of their friends to begin with, buuuuut...
When he sits to chat with Sleekpaw and Needlepaw, with Happypaw good and far out of earshot, she makes a lot of sense.
A LOT of it.
ShadowClan is run by old men who don't know what they're doing. Rowanstar is too emotional to make good choices. Puddlepaw, barely even old enough to begin apprenticeship, is running all the medicine for an entire Clan.
And, sure, he doesn't have much in the way of a connection to StarClan, no, just a little more spiritual than the average cat...
But who can point this out? If Littlecloud is slowly losing his mind anyway?
"It's not right, how much pressure's on you," Sleekpaw growls, "And it wouldn't be this way if we could challenge Rowanstar. You should be training with Kestrelflight right now."
"But we're dealing with the shells StarClan dealt, and the Clan is looking to you now," Needlepaw points out on behalf of her friend, "You have much more sway than you know."
This time around for BB, Sleekpaw starts as a young hero. She's right. Rowanstar should be challenged, his emotions are affecting the ENTIRE Clan, and Puddlepaw is in a bad position because of it. Needlepaw is like her best diplomat, surely to become her deputy someday.
They would have made an excellent set of leaders for ShadowClan. But they trusted the wrong person, and were exploited. When Darktail and The Kin came to the lake, they were swept up by it, and WindClan began an embargo.
Puddlepaw eventually oversees the Yellowcough Outbreak, and at first just thinks it's Greencough. He has no idea about strains, or the special types of Color Cough that Clan cats have historically dealt with. Even when he finally does learn it's not JUST Greencough, he's powerless to do anything about it. A lot of cats die because of the lack of mullein.
After that, with ShadowClan so weak and the Kin so strong... he's one of the cats who calls for the merge. The most important one, in fact, leveraging his position to say that this is StarClan's will.
Sleekwhisker and Needletail were right all along, and he's happy to stick it right into everyone's faces. Onestar's tantrum of an embargo killed his Clanmates, Rowanstar stopped him from properly training, he's been under pressure from the time he was small with Littlecloud not fit to be a mentor, and he's ready to welcome in ShadowClan's new era as something that is not a Clan.
...unfortunately, it turned out to be the wrong choice. Not because his thought process was wrong. But because Darktail had other plans in-mind.

if i did an avos rewrite. it would be firestar coming to sparkpaw and telling her about skyclan and saying it’s time for skyclan to join the clans around the lake. sparkpaw tells jayfeather about her dream and he directs her to sandstorm, who tells her about it, and decides to lead her there. sparkpaw insists her cringefail brother comes too, hopefully to get him some experience (he is a warrior apprentice and not banished to the med den for being so fail) needlepaw finds the patrol and comes too, so it’s grandma and 3 kids, and the 3 apprentices are all become friends.
sandstorm leads them to skyclan and they find darktail and his guys but sandstorm has a bad feeling about them, and refuses to work with them. they go off looking for the real skyclan and find them (instead of going home and then leaving again in a few books) and darktail catches up to them. sandstorm lays down her life fighting for skyclan then, maybe she’s protecting baby twigkit and violetkit (who are not randomly abandoned and are not pov characters) or maybe to give them all a head start at getting away. either way she goes out fighting for skyclan, and glimpses of her spirit guide them back to the lake.
spark and alder return to the lake with skyclan in tow, but sparkpaw is having mixed feelings about skyclan now because her beloved grandma died for them, and now that they’re back at the lake there seems to be nothing but turmoil caused by bringing them back. alderpaw advocates aggressively for them, which drives a wedge between the siblings. skyclan is there to advise shadowclan against letting darktail close to them, but they are stubborn and rowanstar sucks so they ignore the warnings and get taken over. riverclan does not get taken over. needletail is there to give a POV from shadowclan as things get worse. darktail’s gang+shadowclan take over the territory that thunderclan cleared for skyclan’s temporary camp, which adds more tension. onestar is being aggressive and paranoid towards the other clans, especially skyclan, but doesn’t seem interested in what’s happening in shadowclan. needletail (pretending to be on darktail’s side) figures out the relationship between darktail and onestar, and tells sparkpaw, and her and alderpaw go to confront onestar on their own and he kicks them out, but he dwells on their thoughts.
thunder, sky and riverclan leap into a big final battle against darktail, some shadowclan cats turn on him but some don’t out of fear or new loyalties. needletail tries to take on darktail alone, but she ultimately dies, the last thing she sees is alderpaw and sparkpaw desperately trying to help but they’re being held back by either darktail’s posse or clanmates who know that they would just die if they go over there too idk. just when hope seems lost, windclan comes running in and saves the day, with onestar catching darktail by surprise. i like the way they both go under and then never resurface so that can stay.
sparkpaw and alderpaw get their warrior names together, alderheart and sparkstorm, after their grandparents. in needletail’s honor they both aggressively advocate for warrior code reform, and for the clans to move the borders over so skyclan can have territory. maybe there’s some issues with shadowclan trying to reconstruct itself, and there’s some fighting between shadow and skyclan or whatever but the whole juniperclaw thing doesn’t happen, and skyclan doesn’t try to leave again.i think shadowkit is what finally stops the fighting between the two. but the point is. sparkpelt is important the whole time, and skyclan is there too.

how many books have they named Thunder or something Thunder adjacent at this point, isn’t this like, the third?
That's a good question lemmie look
Thunder and Shadow (AVoS Book 2)
Thunder Rising (DOTC Book 2)
Thunder (ASC Book 4)
Thief in ThunderClan (Comic; about ThunderClan)
Thunderstar's Echo (Novella)
You are correct. This is the 3rd book with Thunder in the name, not counting TiTC and TE which have entities with Thunder in the name in the title.
Shadow probably has more though, to be fair. There are SO many books that have Shadow in the name lmao.

i made full "canon" allegiances for the start of the apprentice's quest: link to google doc
this is a part of a little series im doing, where im making full allegiances for the first book of every arc in order. i did bramblestar's storm before this due to the large time gap between the apprentice's quest and the fourth apprentice
here is the masterpost for all the allegiances
“canon” is in quotations because a lot of this is guesswork about who logically would be around at that point in time, but aren’t listed in allegiances or mentioned in the book.
this is mainly meant to be a resource for fanworks
general stuff that’s all still same as last time:
wiki pages are linked to character’s names
med cat = cleric
characters are listed by age. where there are no concrete ages, i make my best guess
tc is the only clan without a “kit” rank as all kits in the clan have known parents, tho we are entering an era where the majority of kits of all clans are starting to have known parents! just in general there is a lot less guesswork as non-tc clans have more filled out allegiances
thunderclan:
pretty much just the allegiances from the apprentice's quest, listed in accordance of age
shadowclan:
grassheart - she is listed as a queen in taq's allegiances and her kits are born next book, but due to the amount of time that passes, i don't think that she would be pregnant quite yet, or at least not noticeably so
riverclan:
sneezecloud is FINALLY a warrior. his apprenticeship took literal years
lakeheart's kits are not listed in taq's allegiances but they are mentioned as being born in like, chapter three, so i think it's fine to list them as born
wavekit/wavepaw and cypresskit/cypresspaw - they are apprentices in thunder and shadow, so making them kits here works. they have no canon mentors
beetlewhisker is not listed bc he is dead
windclan:
whiskernose is listed bc while he is not in avos allegiances, he shows up in surrounding SE and novellas, and in later arcs
outsiders:
pebbleshine and mistfeather - they are listed bc they are around the area. pebbleshine is tagged as (expecting kits) rather than having twig and violet listed bc i do think it's likely that she gave birth like 0.5 seconds before alderpaw found them
darktail's group is listed

to be entirely clear
at the end of arc one, (tpb)
shadowclan has 4 dead leaders, If we count raggedstar because even though he is never Seen dead, it is very clear he has died and we hear about him Being Dead more than once. the fact he was Murdered is a plot point. none of the other previous leaders are mentioned like this(hailstar and heatherstar are never named until super editions and sunstar is mentioned but not by name, and the story isn't even really About him it's about thistleclaw). thunder and river have one. wind has zero. (blood has one)
at the end of arc 2 (tnp)
shadowclan has 4 dead leaders. thunder and river are Still at One. windclan is now Also at one.
at the end of arc 3 (po3)
shadowclan is at 4, but you could Honestly argue that blackstar was functionally dead for like a good few months. if we presume sol dead and also count him as a leader of shadowclan, we are at five. i'm gonna keep saying 4 but keep in mind you Could consider it higher. thunder, wind, and river are all still at One. and all of them were leaders from the first arc.
at the end of arc 4 (oots)
shadowclan remains at four. for now. river and thunder have finally gone up to two (river mid arc, thunder at the end). windclan is still at one, but i'm sure they're about to wish that count was higher.
there are no clan leaders in dawn of the clans but yknow who Does die. moon shadow. AND... Shaded Moss. suspicious. and not only is moon shadow tall shadows brother, shaded moss is the one who leaves her in charge. even more suspicious.
at the end of arc five (avos)
shadowclan has made a sudden jump from four to Six with the deaths of blackstar and rowanstar. thunder and river are still at two. windclan has joined them
tbc had some people die for a little while but they all came back. i guess you could count ashfur as a dead leader because he was leader. and he is dead. but i'm not counting it
and in asc we are up to
six dead shadowclan leaders. three dead riverclan leaders. two dead thunderclan leaders but they could get another soon. and two dead windclan leaders
Shadowclan! Leaders! Die! Like! Chumps!!!!

i wonder if part of the seeming-illiteracy i complain about when it comes to how fans understand many warriors characters is a product of how the series is compartmentalized?
people form an opinion on a character's actions in one arc, then they form an opinion of how they behave in another arc, and then they try to combine these two opinions -- and so if in the first arc, the fan's opinion is negative, then in the second, the character makes amends and grows, and the fan forms a positive opinion, the result isn't "this character did bad things and then grew as a person" it's "this character has done some good things and some bad things and should continue to be held accountable for all of the bad things"
a great deal of it is also the mindset that "sin"/any mistakes fudamentally stains you as a person, so no matter how much you repent or change, you are still a bad person -- and also that "bad thoughts" are, if not as condemnable as "bad actions", still something the character must be persecuted for and atone over. notice how these are both christian frameworks of wrongdoing.
maybe because we go back and forth so often in the timeline, we end up with this character-development-soup where any action a character took in the 4th arc is still just as relevant to who they are as the action they took in the 6th arc. it's hard to discuss "ivypool" when i don't even know if the people i'm talking to have read avos, tigerheart's shadow, the broken code, AND the Thunder excerpt, or if we're arguing over OOTS ivypool and one post they read on tumblr
an example of this timeline-soup fallibility in my own analysis is how i think about Blossomfall's age in comparison to Thornclaw's. i think of OOTS as "my era" because it's the series that was coming out when i got into the books as a kid. So, Blossomfall in my imagination is almost always OOTS Blossomfall.
Therefore, when I try to reconcile "blossomfall and thornclaw are a couple" with the OOTS Blossomfall that lives in my brain, alarm bells go off. It's hard to factor in the timeskip between OOTS and AVOS because i'm still subconsciously living in OOTS.
anyway, it's just something to think about

knowing that pebbleshines spirit was watching over her kits the whole time throughout avos (until her spirit is put to rest ofc) just makes what happened to violetshine even more heartbreaking like. its one thing seeing her experience all this trauma, but then imagine it from pebbles perspective: shes watching her daughter go through all this, getting separated from her family, being emotionally neglected, being manipulated by a cult leader, being forced to watch her loved ones die. and the whole time pebbleshine is there to see all of it and cant do anything about it. it breaks her heart to see her daughter this way and she cant even comfort her, cant even defend her from all the awful things happening to her.
in thunder and shadow, twigpaw is so determined to find her mother, and when she finds out shes dead, violetpaw shows no emotional reaction. she treats the fact that their mother is dead as if it was obvious, as if she doesnt care. and this hurts pebbleshine, obviously, but she accepts it. her daughters never really knew her. but she knows her daughters, knows them better than any cat, because shes been watching over them for so long. and they dont even know her name. and violet, who desperately just wants to be loved, has no idea that the cat who loves her and knows her so well is someone shes never even seen before. pebbleshine wants to give her daughter the love she deserves, but she cant. and that.....makes me feel even more Pain

Wavepaw —> Wavewhisker of Riverclan. Wavepaw is an apprentice from AVoS that appears in only one book, Thunder and Shadow, alongside her sister Cypresspaw. Wave and Cypress were a reference to blogclan members online but the characters were edited out of future books so they no longer exist in the series.

BB!Tawnypelt
Tumblr media
[ID: A version of Tawnypelt for the Better Bones AU. She is a golden torbie with green eyes, a brown mask, and long raptor claws shared by her family. She has a tiger-shaped neck, tail, and broad shoulders, with one arm featuring inverted colors.]
New leader of the Sundrown Patrol, cynical, savvy, focused on the mission above all else. Though power dances just out of the reach of her claws, the theme of her life is family, loss, and connection.
I noticed a theme in canon that the tabbies in the Tiger line lose their golden sisters. Birchface watches Frecklewish damned to the Dark Forest, Hawkfrost is cut off by Mothwing for his toxicity, Tigerheart sees Dawnpelt march into the claws of the Kin, Strikestone never sees Sleekwhisker again. For Better Bones, I made that an OFFICIAL curse.
Gorseclaw struck down his sister, Spottedpelt, in the climax of Ripplestar's Rot and since then, Tigerkin tabbies have been tragically losing their golden siblings. Bramblepaw watching Tawnypaw joining TigerClan is the true beginning of their character arcs, as both siblings grapple with their insecurities and loneliness.
Below the cut:
TNP; the Sundrown Patrol and Tigerstar blowing up the voicemail
Po3 and OotS, her reaction to Hollyleaf's Reveal and early Bramblestar
AVoS and Tawnypelt's Mountain, her reduxed novella
Beyond and Bonus Trivia
BETTER BONES TNP
The new POVs of TNP are the four Tigerkin, Tawnypelt serves as a contrast to Brambleclaw to establish that he is an unreliable narrator.
Tawny is objective when it comes to bonds between other people, but underestimates how much others like her back.
This is a problem for her in ShadowClan, where their dark and dry sense of humor is hard for her, as a very genuine ThunderClan cat, to accurately parse.
She takes a lot of Rowanclaw's behavior as open aggression, only realizing very late into TNP that he is the son of Brokenstar and was trying to break the ice the entire time.
She takes the death of Feathertail hard. They all do, but Tawny feels angry that she can't be the faithful, gentle, soothing presence that Feather was.
Tigerstar is trying to contact her long before he sets his sights on Brambleclaw and Hawkfrost. Though she considers it, she makes a final rejection of him on reaching the lake.
She decrees that the journey has changed all the cats, especially herself, and that the sun is rising on a new time for all four Clans.
Though expanded into a POV, Tawny's journey is quite simple, unlike Bramble who grows into an unfortunate antagonist in upcoming arcs.
IN PO3 AND OOTS BEYOND
There is a truce between Shadow and Thunder for Po3, only coming to a bloody crash later when Bramblestar takes power in OotS
But for one arc, Tawny is the Three's beloved aunt. In several 'episodes' of this slice-of-life breather redux, she is a supporting character. She's close friends with Squirrelflight, as well.
Her FIRST litter is Flametail and Dawnpelt! They're around the same age as the Three.
When the secret is revealed, Tawnypelt is beside herself with frustration at Bramblestar.
It's understandable to be upset, but demotion of his deputy? Disowning his children??
And then, Bramblestar starts pushing the border. She is convinced something crawled into his head and died there
In OotS, she has her second litter. Its only survivor is a little gold-and-brown tabby, which she renames Tigerkit as a ferocious dare to StarClan to take this one back as well.
Tigerpaw and Dovepaw are around the same age on the journey, during which Tigerpaw makes an offhanded comment about, "No one actually likes being a tom" and Dovepaw brutally cracks her egg with a very well aimed, "yea they do"
The death of Russetfur is brought to THIS arc, in one of Bramble's battles, and is the reason Blackstar is open to Sol's influence.
Ratscar, Redwillow, and Applefur take over and Tawnypelt tries to lead opposition against them, but their training has made them freakishly strong and they have allies.
Rowanclaw rallies the rest of the Clan to confront Blackstar, and convince him to come back by reminding him of how loved he is
And it's for that reason that Rowanclaw is eventually made deputy. He saw the solution that no one else did. No tricks. No brute force. Just honesty.
AVOS AND TAWNYPELT'S MOUNTAIN
In AVoS, Tawnypelt watches her Clan get destroyed from the inside-out as Darktail exploits the anger of its warriors and apprentices, turning it into a cult.
Having already lost Flametail, losing Dawnpelt here, Tigerheart returning with two kittens only to die horribly was unbearable.
Rowanstar took the body of his daughter and dove into the Moonpool, drowning his lives away so that she could live and revive as Heartstar.
After that... Tawnypelt felt like she'd lost it all again. We return to her POV for the first time since TNP, to explore that.
How home no longer feels like home, how Heartstar returned as a leader and it's as though everyone she loves has changed.
But little Shadowkit is not as healthy as his sister, suffering seizures much stronger than Sorreltail of ThunderClan, no Cleric having a good prognosis for his life.
Heartstar and Dovewing do not want to expose him to more stress, and as his parents, agree that they will simply try to give him as comfortable of a life as possible.
Tawnypelt's Mountain is not a story about needing to save the Tribe again; it's about Tawnypelt kidnapping her grandson because he needs a stronger treatment and she's convinced the Tribe can offer it.
No she does not get permission.
Go Grandma
It's about all the times she had to let go, it's about how she never truly got to know Sleekwhisker and Juniperclaw, it's about how she couldn't save the old ShadowClan.
And it's about Shadowkit, and how comfortable he is at a young age with the concept of death. Spiresight, Rowanstar, Heartstar, Juniperclaw.
Up until the moment a Tribe Medic is able to look at him, Shadow had fully believed his illness was terminal. It's as if his future had suddenly changed.
(In the original book Dovewing was also on this trip, but I'm actually considering it JUST be Shadow and Tawny because I think it's a really interesting idea to have a grandma/grandkit story where the kit has wisdom beyond their years... but is still a child. And Tawny realizes that she was using this as a way to both help him, yes, but also to get a win for herself. Dovewing has plenty of her own content.)
The Tribe teaches them to use Chamomile to treat his epilepsy, showing Tawny exactly how to measure it, how to steep it, and how to heat it into a tea.
As TBC progresses, Shadowsight's growing skill as a Cleric is shown through his competence at preparing his own treatments.
Tawnypelt and Stormfur are able to catch up together too, and talk about their lives, drama, and how destiny brings you to strange places.
When she comes back, the Clan is expecting Heartstar to punish Tawny for stealing a kitten... but Heartstar is not going to do that to her mom, citing it's because Tawny was right and her son has a treatment better than the last.
In reality it's because Heartstar is Biased and will never punish her family lmao
BEYOND AND BONUSES
She's part of the rebellion in TBC and one of Shadowsight's beloved family members, but overall is a background element.
She decides to retire after that arc, feeling her age.
Tawny is a specialist of taking down large game, and great at coordinating and commanding hunts.
Hogs, small deer, so on.
Also one of ShadowClan's stronger fighters, but outclassed by Dark Forest trainees.
Her favorite food is frogspawn and gravy, likes everything about the taste of amphibians.
Design-wise she looks a lot like Tigerstar, but more lithe and with more of her mother's colors.
Close to breaking some kind of apprentice-training record, Oakfur is SO proud of her!
