Little Soldiers by the Crane Wives fits Ava and Lizzie perfectly and I miss them so much
“It was a march we made towards ruin and despair
But we held hands all the while”
“We didn't give up, we wouldn't dare surrender
It was an honest loss
Now the aftermath will ring with songs you've sung
All of our words sent home in boxes
I fought with tooth and nail before the flag had flown
But you were already gone
I'll swear that I loved you”

Had a major death in the family, and after two weeks of no time to art, I had to deal with a tax mess and structure an entirely new Character Design course for work.
I just got caught up, and I needed something fun and consequence-free, so why not Frasier with the Mallory kids?

Took me forever to get around to it, but I finally wrote a little story about the AvM Hangman short.
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The last thing the Hollowhead remembered was seeing a group of colorful Stick figures, and then darkness.
They’d heard voices, but eventually everything had gone quiet.
But now their vision was coming back, and they could hear soft footsteps.
A blurred blue figure came into view and sat next to them.
The Stick blinked slowly a few times, and their vision finally cleared. They fumbled a hand out and took the blue figure’s hand.
“Oh, you’re awake!”
The blue figure propped them up.
“You don’t need to be scared, okay? You’re safe here.”
The Hollowhead tried to say something, but only a little squeak came out.
“No, shhh, don’t talk for now. You’ll feel better soon. Just stay still and rest, okay?”
The black Hollowhead moved their head slowly, looking around to see a room full of green.
The Hollowhead tried to point at one of the green things, but felt a gentle squeeze on their hand.
“This is my room. It’s got a lot of plants. I don’t have a bed but I made you one. We can put it in your room later.”
The Hollowhead frowned curiously, furrowing their brow.
“We made you a new room, and once you’re feeling better, we’ll show you.”
The black Hollowhead looked up when another Hollowhead, this one orange, walked into the room.
“Hey, Blue…how’s it going?”
“Hey, Orange. They’re doing alright. Just a little confused I think.”
“Alan wanted to know if they were ok.”
“I think they’ll be fine with enough rest,” Blue said.
“Alan said he’s really sorry.”
“I know he didn’t mean to,” Blue sighed. “I just wonder…”
“…Me too…”
The Hollowhead squeezed Blue’s hand.
“Uh-huh?” Blue looked back down with a smile. “How are you doing? Do you feel bad?”
They looked at the orange figure.
“This is Orange!” Blue said. “He’s my friend.”
Orange waved with a little smile.
The Hollowhead pointed at themself.
“Who are you?” Blue asked. “Your name? Well, you don’t have a name yet, but you can pick one when you’re feeling better!”
The Hollowhead smiled.
“That’s right, and don’t let us forget!” Orange said. “You can pick whatever name you want.”
The black Hollowhead smiled and Orange smiled back, then turned to go.
“I’m going to tell Alan they’re okay. I’ll be back, and I’ll bring some soup and water.”
“Thanks, Orange!” Blue said. “See you soon.”
The black Hollowhead squeezed Blue’s hand again.
“I’ll stay with you,” Blue said, patting their hand. “Are you sleepy?”
They shook their head and squeezed Blue’s hand again.
“I’m not going anywhere, I promise,” Blue said, squeezing back. “Why don’t I read you a story?”
Blue picked up a book and awkwardly opened it with one hand.
“Ready?” Blue asked, looking down at the Hollowhead, who nodded. “Okay. I think you’ll like it.”
Still holding the Hollowhead’s hand, Blue began to read.
“‘In the great green room, there was a telephone, and a red balloon, and a picture of the cow jumping over the moon’…”
In celebration of the new AVA episode...
Some Victim angst for the table under the cut.
The lyrics in the comic are the opening lines from "The Moon Will Sing" by The Crane Wives. For some reason, I always associated that song with Victim, idk.
The Curious Case of Crane
Chapter 1: Teaching the Alphabet to the Ants
At that moment someone knocked at the door. "Come in," said the carpenter, without having the strength to rise to his feet. ... "Good day, Master Antonio," said Geppetto; "what are you doing there on the floor?" "I am teaching the alphabet to the ants." "Much good may that do you."
— Carlo Collodi, Pinocchio, Chapter II
...
It wasn't until he'd almost drawn a complete hangman that Alan considered what he was doing.
In a split second, he realized how this might look to the others, and he almost hesitated.
But...it should be fine, shouldn't it? They knew the name of the game, they must've realized what he'd be drawing.
Or maybe they hadn't made the connection until now, like him. Maybe they still hadn't made it. Maybe only he had realized where this was headed, and it was too late to back out or change course now.
(Another guess wrong. He drew the second arm.)
Just...just keep going. If they didn't like it, he could cross that bridge when they got to it.
.
.
.
At least he didn't have to worry about this one springing to life on him. That'd be kinda odd, wouldn't it? For a simplified visual representation of a dead person to come to life?
That's all this one was, anyway: a representation, a symbolic caricature serving as a stand-in for a human form. Same as any other stickfigure.
He wasn't trying to make someone. He wasn't imparting anything. It was just a body. Not even that, it was just a circle and some lines. They weren't even grouped.
(Another guess wrong. He drew the first leg.)
.
.
.
...not that he was drawing a dead body, necessarily. No, that was morbid. Because this wasn't a dead person, or a dead stickfigure.
It was more like...a dummy. Yeah. A fake person.
Which...all stickfigures were, anyway.
So that would make this one...a fake stickfigure?
.
.
.
Let's go with that. Just don't think about it too hard, Alan.
(Another guess wrong. He drew the second leg.)
18 Dec 2023
I read a bunch of books for the past few weeks and I mostly disliked them so I'm just going to make this wrap-up as quick and painless as possible.
Six Crimson Cranes
Tumblr media
Honestly? The writing isn't half-bad. The premise and storyline was a whole lot of fun, and I adored most of it. The saving grace / highlight of this entire story? Raikama. This woman made me cry. Yes, I actually ended up shedding some tears for her at the end of the story. I loved her character tremendously, and I just… felt she deserved the world.
I only WISHED the rest of the main cast was as interesting. I'm furious that Seryu isn't the male lead. We were fucking robbed, y'all. He is a gazillion times more interesting than Takaan. Oh Gawd. The romance is the worst romance I've ever read. I don't buy anything here. I don't care.
Unfortunately, Raikama wasn't enough to save the story for me. If I don't care about the leads, then I don't care about the book. While I don't follow this rule for thrillers, books of that genre are the only exception to that rule. It's that simple.
Silence of the Lambs
Tumblr media
It's funny because this book is the total opposite. I was extremely fascinated by Hannibal and I thought he was the highlight of the story. However, I didn't care for the rest of the thriller. I'm not the biggest fan of books—in fact, I hate it—where the killer's identity is revealed at the start. I don't mean Hannibal, by the way; I'm talking about Buffalo Bill. That's what the majority of the plot circles around. It sucks out all the tension for me, and I need to say that even for a police procedural, this was a very dry, very tedious read. There was just too much detail on extraneous parts of the book.
Okay, it wasn't entirely extraneous, but it might as well have been. I didn't need chapter after chapter of the police people doing police things in excruciating detail before finding out something mildly important. I have read A LOT of police procedural thrillers, and this is by far the worst. Most of it just involves you sitting there waiting for the main leads to connect the dots that you... already know.
City of Glass
Tumblr media
I finally read this! I preferred City of Ashes, but it wasn't a bad book. I think out of everything in this wrap-up, I liked this book the best. After watching the paint dry with Silence of the Lambs, reading a storyline that actually gripped me and kept me turning the pages was MOST welcome.
I do think, though, that Sebastian was quite wasted of a character and he died too easily. But the twist with how Valentine broke through the city's wards was AWESOME. (And also the Hodge twist? *chef's kiss*)
In my opinion, the series should have ended here. I really am hesitant to continue with the rest of the Mortal Instruments series. I know the next three books go to shit, and I... do not know if I want to waste my time with the brain rot. This would have been quite satisfying as an ending, and we REALLY don't need any more existential drama from Jace.
(Also, I still think Simon is garbage and I wish he didn't exist.)
Juniper and Thorn
Tumblr media
Ava Reid, you are my mortal enemy. YOU are the reason I'm in a slump right now.
I think a lot of people would like this book, and I don't blame them. The fantasy elements are beyond fascinating, and I think that the story is far superior to Six Crimson Cranes. I couldn't put the book down. I think the level of darkness is just enough for me—any more and it might feel too much. (I was actually expecting more.) The ending twist was pretty good, and I wished A Study in Drowning had produced some kind of twist in its conclusion too.
That said, the heroine is an idiot who does idiotic things, and if this wasn't fiction, she'd be pregnant, duped by a man and even more fucked over than she already was… which is saying something, given her familial circumstances. But because this is fiction (but a very unconvincing one), Sevas, the hero, is a decent man. I do not know why he liked her, I do not know why this romance had to happen, and I do not buy any of this charade with its insta-love and lack of chemistry. I still think Takaan and Shiori were a smidgen worse, but this is a close second.
Marlinchen is the type of foolish, sheltered heroine you'd read in The Only One Left by Riley Sager, the one that makes horrible mistakes and meets a horrible end. I can stomach characters like that in thrillers, because it's not romanticised and you see the ugly reality for what it is. But in this story, it is completely romanticised, and I just… I don't want any part of it, and I'm annoyed that this is the aftertaste I'm left with after reading three unsatisfying books in (almost) a row.
I'd hoped this could redeem the author after A Study in Drowning disappointed me, but I know better now. To the Blacklist you go, Miss Reid!
(Also… Ava, there is such a thing called 'female orgasms'. Feel free to Google this phenomenon, because I don't think you've ever known about their existence. We do not exist just for male pleasure. Just a heads-up!)
Y/n smiled as she walked slowly down the hallway her hand gently holding that of her three year old son, they made their way through the backstage area. “Daddy?” The small boy called out craning his neck to try and see which wasn’t easy given he was so small. Y/n scoops him up so he could see better as they made their way in the direction of Tyler’s locker room. “Don’t worry my love we’ll find him we just have a few more turns and we’ll be there.” Pressing a kiss to his cheek they walked a little longer and y/n stops gently setting her son on the ground.
“Look who it is bubs.” She pointed up the hallway smiling when her son’s eyes landed on the man, he loved more than anyone apart from her.
“Daddy!” His squeal caused heads to turn light chuckles hitting her ears as Tyler quickly turned around and gasped bending down. Y/n let their son’s hand go watching as he quickly toddled down the hallway towards his dad.
“Hey buddy you excited to see daddy wrestle for the first time?”| Tyler asked holding his son close smiling into a face so similar to his own chuckling as the small boy cheered nodding his head and hugging him. Y/n walked over joining them and smiled when Tyler wrapped an arm around her waist kissing her softly. “Hello gorgeous I thought you two were supposed to be here fifteen minutes ago?” “Sorry babe we ran into your dad, and you know he can’t resist spending a few minutes with his grandson.” Y/n smiled listening as their son excitedly chattered away to Tyler about well she couldn’t really understand what but they both seemed to be having fun. Making your way into the locker room you sat down on the couch. “And you’ve already seen daddy’s title but I’m defending it tonight.”
Pulling your phone out you snap a couple pictures of them and a small video, the video would be something for yourselves. Despite sharing some things Tyler was still a private person when it came to his life and your child.
“Are you guys going to be ringside or stay in the gorilla?”
“I figured the gorilla since he’s still so little and I don’t want the crowd to be overwhelming for him. But uncle Dan said that he had a nice quiet spot all set up for us.”
Tyler smiled nodding his head as he sat down beside his fiancée and their son crawled over onto her lap, he’d been dreaming of this day for the last three years and it was finally here. He couldn’t want to see what his son thought of seeing daddy wrestle in real time. When a knock sounded on the door the trio made their way from the room making their way to the gorilla. “Okay I have to go out now, but I’ll be back when I’m finished.” He kissed the small boy’s head then stood up and kissed y/n with a soft smile as he moved the hair out of his eyes.
“You’re going to do great we’ll be here when you’re finished.”
“Thank you I’ll see you in a few I love you both.”
“We love you too.”
“Love you daddy.” Tyler’s smile widened more as he ruffled his son’s hair, and his music began sending them both a wink he walked out feeling on top of the world.
Hi! Would it be okay to ask for poems that radiate some kind of "red" energy? I saw your recommendations about the similar ask with blue and I really loved it, so I thought I could ask for more :)
Red and blue, twin poles of the world 💘I had to think about this one (red has a distinct vibe for me) but I think all of these feel "red" when I read them, in one form or another, if not always overtly, so I hope you enjoy them, too:
"In the Desert" by Stephen Crane
"Woman Unborn" by Anna Swir
"El Beso" by Angelina Weld Grimké
"What Do Women Want?" by Kim Addonizio
"For You" by Kim Addonizio
"Little Beast" by Richard Siken
"Aubade" by Miller Williams
"Green and Gold" by Rachel Hadas
"Ishtar Awakens in Chicago" by Mohja Kahf
"The Second Coming" by W.B. Yeats
"O" by Dunya Mikhail
