Typography Tuesday
This week we revisit an untitled and undated specimen catalog from the Luzern, Switzerland, wood-type manufacture Roman Scherer (1848-1922), produced ca. 1905. Scherer founded Holztypenfabrik Roman Scherer in Luzern in 1877, designing and manufacturing wood type using wood from local fruit trees. Scherer's company was the first and probably the only Swiss wood-type manufacturer, operating until the late 1970s.
Scherer was born into a Swiss farming family and after leaving school he bounced around various jobs until he became manager at an early age of the Pays’schen Fabrik factory that produced wooden furniture and rifle stocks in Luzern. Here he learned how to manage the manufacture of wood products. So, at the age of 29 he acquired the requisite equipment and established his own business. By the early 20th century, the firm was earning commissions and awards, and Scherer was able to expand. The business remained prosperous after his death, but in the mid-1960s the foundry had to shut down because of the construction of Swiss Autobahn 27, and in 1966 the company was acquired by the Haas Type Foundry and moved to Münchenstein near Basel. Manufacture of wood type slowed and in 1976 production was moved to Gedi-Schriften of the Diller brothers company in Bamberg, Germany. Today, Scherer type catalogs are much sought after.

Porsche “Berlin-Rome” Type 64 (1 of 2).
During 1938, Ferdinand Porsche and Major Adolf Hühnlein met, and the subject of establishing an endurance motor sport event was discussed. Hühnlein was inspired, and he set in motion a plan to organise a race from Berlin to Rome, a 1500km event that would take place in September 1939. No doubt Hühnlein’s motivation to his superiors included promoting Germany’s excellent system of Autobahns which this race would utilise, and the event would also tie in conveniently with the start of production of the KdF-Wagen.
In preparation for the race, it was decided to build three special long-distance race cars, and to Ferdinand Porsche’s delight, these were ordered and paid for by Volkswagen. For political reasons the cars were called KdF-Wagen and so in Volkswagen circles the car was known as the Type 60K10, although the Porsche engineers referred to it as the Type 64.
The 64 was to have an aluminium body, and the wheels were fully covered with removable alloy panels. Due to the event being a long-distance road race, Karl Fröhlich designed the car to carry two spare wheels in its nose, a move which meant the standard fuel tank would have to be relocated further back on the passenger side.
The engine used in the Type 64/60K10 was the standard 985cc unit as used in the KdF-Wagen, by increasing the compression ratio, power output was raised to 32 bhp at 3500 rpm.
With the race date set for September 1939, production of the three cars, Sports Car 1, 2 and 3, commenced in the summer of that year. The three chassis numbers allocated to the race cars, also referred to as the KdF-Rekordwagen, was 38/41, 38/42 and 38/43.
Karosseriewerk Reutter were given the task of making the bodies for the three cars from 0.5mm alloy sheets, but it wasn’t until 19 August 1939 that the first body was completed, a fortnight before the official start date of the Second World War. The second car was only completed on 20 December that year in a dark colour, while the third car, finished in the same silver colour as the first car, was only completed on 15 June 1940.
The plans for Porsche’s own sports car were already on the drawing board in 1947 and the first of the new 356 models was officially registered in June 1948. Just as the Type 64 had looked so ultra-modern when compared to contemporary sports machinery of the day, so too did the Porsche 356 immediately date other sports cars of the period. It was at this time that, with the war now over and plans to develop the 356 into a really competitive sports car in the market, that the old Type 64 became redundant to Porsche. Fortunately, the Swiss racing driver Otto Mathé had shown an interest in acquiring the Type 64, otherwise this crucially important piece of Porsche history may well have gone the way of its two siblings, and been scrapped.
“Otto Mathé, was one of the first, if not the very first driver, to use Porsche products for racing,” said Oliver Schmidt of the Prototyp Museum in Hamburg. Today there are two Type 64s in existence, the first being the 38/41 car Mathé bought from Porsche in 1949. The second car has been built up from the spares that Mathé bought from Porsche.

St Pauls Basilica, European experts tell us, had ongoing construction from the 4th century through 1840? So far beyond a human lifespan, such a project would be impossible. The symmetric design and thematic elements of crossed lines are visible everywhere from decorative stonework and the windows to even the arrangement of the building, which could only be seen from hundreds of feet in the air! The Parthenon, The Colosseum, Notre Dame, Stonehenge, The Autobahn. Could ordinary people have undertaken such massive construction projects?
But when we consider advanced technologies available to those people brought to them by Aliens, and suddenly, the advanced mathematics of these engineering marvels fall into place. Of course it was a star-faring people who built these things. The European people were visited by aliens, and documented these visits over the years by declaring those visited as "Saints" and documented their lives and interactions closely.

Top 10 Innovative Cars
The cars of today owe a lot to the vehicles that came before them. Car design has always been about innovation and breaking new ground, but it's rare to find an automobile that can genuinely be said to have changed everything that came afterwards. The cars in this list were not your average motors - each and every one of them had an influence that reached far beyond their original conception. Here are the unique stories of ten of the most innovative and influential cars ever produced.
Tumblr media
Ford Model T (1908)
The first massed produced automobile.
The Model T - colloquially known as the Tin Lizzie - is generally regarded as the first affordable car in the world, and the vehicle that opened up a world of automobile travel to the middle classes. Ford's assembly line production made it all possible, setting a standard of manufacturing that influenced almost every industry in the world. Produced between 1908 and 1927, more than 15 million Tin Lizzies were sold, and the car gave mobility to the masses. For that reason, it is often considered to be one of the most influential developments in the history of design and production.
Tumblr media
Rolls Royce Silver Ghost (1908)
The first military car.
At the time of its development, the beautiful Rolls Royce Silver Ghost was considered to be at the forefront of luxury car design. However, it was to become something much more important than a toy for the rich. In 1914, all Silver Ghost chassis were re-purposed to form the basis for a brand new armored car, and the vehicles ended up playing a significant part in World War I, the Irish Civil War, the Turkish Wars and even World War II. In doing so, the Silver Ghost gave birth to the modern concept of mechanized military conflicts and ended the days of the horse cavalry.
Tumblr media
Austin Seven (1922)
The first 'people's car'.
The Austin 7 is a legendary British car that was hugely successful both in its home country and abroad. It is often seen as the forerunner to the modern automobile as we know it, and made a huge impact on the economy car market that was comparable to the innovative inroads made by the Ford Model T fifteen years before. It is seen as the first 'people's car' that further popularized motoring, and it was re-bodied to form the basis for the first cars produced by BMW, Nissan, Lotus, Jaguar and the Australian firm Holden.
Tumblr media
Volkswagen Beetle (1938)
The mechanical innovator that became a cultural icon.
It's hard to find another automobile with the rich history of the Volkswagen Beetle. The brainchild of Ferdinand Porsche, it was one of the first rear-engine automobiles and was specifically designed to travel at 100kph on Germany's autobahn highway system. It also featured one of the world's first air-cooled engine designs, but its impact went way beyond its mechanical innovations. Its production lasted for 65 years between 1938 and 2006 - the longest ever run for a single design concept - and it was the first car to truly become a cultural icon (helped by the 'Herbie' films of course), showing that motor cars had a place in wider entertainment.
Tumblr media
BMC Mini (1959)
The early 'hot hatchback'.
Another car that gained an influence outside of the motoring world is the much loved BMC mini. It was conceptualized as a car for everyone and went on to be produced in over 100 variants in countries all over the globe. It was also one of the first modern front wheel drive cars, and made the idea of the small 'hot hatchback' cool. This simple, little car which came to symbolize the 'swinging' 60s, was one of the first efficient 'city' cars and became a rally car, racing legend and movie icon in pictures like The Italian Job.
Tumblr media
Citroen DS (1955)
The groundbreaking car that influenced car design for years.
The Citroën DS always occupies high places when experts are looking to crown the best car of all time, and with good reason. This executive car was years ahead of its time and it's widely accepted that every modern car model can in some way trace its design back to the DS. It was the first mass production car to include disc brakes, featured an aerodynamic body design considered futuristic at the time but standard today, it had hydraulic suspensions and revolving headlights, and sold a then-record 12,000 units on its first day of release. It remains one of the most influential automobile designs ever produced.
Tumblr media
Jaguar E-Type (1961)
The luxury icon of the 1960s.
The Jaguar E-Type is one of the most beautiful sports cars ever to grace the road, and a legend of 1960s design. At a time when most cars were more about practicality than style and performance, the E-Type boasted top of speeds in excess of 150mph and could travel 0-60mph in under 7 seconds. It was the first production vehicle that didn't feature a body fixed to a separate chassis, instead, it employed a 'racing design' where the body was attached to a tubular framework. It will always be associated with high performance and sleek sophistication, and it influenced sports car designed long after it left the production line.
Tumblr media
Lamborghini Miura (1966)
The world's first super car.
The Lamborghini Miura was the world's first super car, and pushed the boundaries of what people thought was possible in automobile design. It ushered in the era of the high-performance, two-seater sports car and was lightning quick - comfortably the fastest road car in production when it was first released. The design shared much more in common with the race cars of the day, rather than the sleek touring car designs that had previously been favored by car firm bosses, including Ferruccio Lamborghini himself, who objected the original concept for the Miura, forcing the company's engineers to design it in their spare time.
Tumblr media
Chrysler Minivan (1983)
The first ever multi-passenger mini-van.
In 1983, Chrysler effectively invented the Minivan and changed the way cars were conceptualized for good. The Minivan's design grew from the need for a vehicle suitable for larger families, which still retained the driveability of a normal car. It looked boxy, but had a sliding side door that made loading the kids in the car easy, yet it was small enough to fit in a standard parking spot. Owning one came to symbolise both financial, adult success and, paradoxically, 'lost youth' in 1980s America. The car changed the landscape of automobile design forever.
Tumblr media
Toyota Prius (1997)
The world's first mass-produced electric hybrid vehicle.
The Toyota Prius was the first mass-produced hybrid, electric vehicle in the world, and its influence is probably yet to be fully realized. Just as the Model T and Austin 7 brought automobiles to the masses, the Prius broke new ground in the important quest for an electric powered alternative to modern gas guzzlers and remains one of the most environmentally friendly cars sold to date (now in its fourth generation, it remains in production). For all these reasons, the Prius deserves its place on this list of the most innovative car designs of all time.

Due to circumstances i'm considering moving to the east coast after spending most of my life in the pacific northwest. Any advice?
this is me presuming you mean the northeast coast and not the south east bc thats a whole different kettle of fish. like even then there's a major difference between like. south carolina and florida.
-people are less inclined to strike up random friendly conversation with you. i think this is a net positive and people in portland constantly trying to talk to me freaked me out. the only people who talk to me are immediately obviously insane or are yelling at me.
-you need to take extra, extra good care of you car or it will rust
-the weather is insane lol. i can't people people lived like this before air conditioning. you cannot live without AC or heat. non-negotiable. you will experience every type of weather and problem except earthquakes.
-this was mind-blowing for me to adjust to but almost nothing over here is capable of biting and killing you. there are parts of the US where you have to shake out your shoes before you go out or watch where you step but like look at this lol
Tumblr media
i came from a city with a landmark named "rattlesnake mountain". this shit is unreal to me. anyway,
-the cities were designed by mud-stacking idiots riding horses 300 years ago and as a result, every city feels like you're driving in toontown. unless its NYC probably i guess but the majority of these places were made wrong as a joke. this is probably RI only but some places have also decided to destroy their public transit so that you are forced to take the autobahn part 2: electric boogaloo. i'm not an anti-car guy, you know me, but its a human rights violation to make me drive in the minotaur's labyrinth
-the liquor laws here are busted lol. these guys still make you go to a separate store to buy liquor. puritan ass behavior. stop making me drive to another, sadder location
-availability of good options is going to be VERY different!!! PROS: cheap seafood that whips ass, portuguese, cuban, jamaican, ethiopian, italian (!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS WHERE THE REAL ITALIAN AMERICAN FOOD IS) and honestly there's still some extremely good mexican restaurants here. CONS: nothing is open after 9, good luck getting a meal past 8 on a sunday. its like they think vampires come out at night or something. trying to find ethnic food stores that have what you need is tough. less chinese and japanese options.

Meet 90s Au Jazz!
Tumblr media
Jazz is a journalist and was one of the few people to catch onto the real scope of Megatron's schemes. This started when a friend of his, Steamhammer, who worked for Megatron's construction company complained about conditions and wanting to his friend, Jazz started looking into it.
Uncovering Megatron's involvement with the destruction of the planet Trios and other various schemes both on and off Cybertron, Jazz couldn't just let it go. Unfortunately, Steamhammer turned out to be less of a friend than he thought! Megatron paid Steamhammer to kill Jazz and destroy his evidence. Needing to keep it safe and out of their hands Jazz ended up with a vigilante going by the name Optimus Prime and together, they formed the Autobots.
Jazz was one of the first Autobots on Earth! Infiltrating Megatron's "yacht" with Prowl, Hot Spot, Roulette, Sunstreaker, and Red Alert and making it crash (though accidentally!) on Earth.
Despite the graveness of their situation being on the run from Megatron Jazz never lets it get him down. He moonlights as a journalist for the local paper's art and culture column under the alias J. Autobahn and found a friend in fellow investigative journalist, Franklin. He also has a fondness for surfing and he has found a private cove he can let himself loose on.
His current mode is the 1994 Design Performance Barramundi!

During the 1950s and alongside the increasing amount on traffic of the German Autobahn the idea of placing churches at the roadside took shape. The very first dedicated roadside church was „Maria, Schutz der Reisenden“ (1958) near Adelsried, designed by Raimund von Doblhoff (1914-93), a Viennese who by chance remained in the city of Augsburg after WWII and who had a decisive influence on the city‘s reconstruction: from 1945 on he rebuilt the Fuggerei, Germany’s first ever social housing project from the 16th century, using what was left and adding modern amenities to functionally improve the estate that is still serving its historic purpose. The present catalogue, published by Reimer Verlag in 2009 in conjunction with an exhibition at Architekturmuseum Schwaben (which has unfortunately been closed in 2019), not only deals with the architect’s meritorious reconstructive work in Augsburg but also his love for American architecture, embodied by the work of FLW and Richard Neutra. This part of Doblhoff’s career primarily shows in his house and interior designs which he carried out for numerous affluent clients in and around Augsburg but also on the Italian island of Elba. These and other projects can be traced with the help of the comprehensive work catalogue in the back of the book which in great detail lists all of von Doblhoff’s projects and once again demonstrates the versatility and quality of the architect’s work. Against the background of the book and the obvious richness of von Doblhoff’s work it is really shameful and not quite comprehensible that he has been largely forgotten today….

Chinese EVs killing Legacy Auto because people can REALLY afford them
Chinese EVs killing Legacy Auto because people can REALLY afford them...
P.S. It is a deliberately chosen strategy of Western car manufacturers - to impose on buyers way too expensive, too heavy, too powerful cars (everywhere, except for German autobahns, there are speed limits, and you have virtually no freeways to legally use the car's power), uneconomical and difficult to repair vehicles, which provide manufacturers with a good profit margin. People vote with their money by refusing to buy overpriced and poorly designed cars. Currently, there are only a few practical and functional car models in Europe that do not turn into a bottomless money pits...

Adler T10 Autobahn 2.5 Liter Cabriolet
In 1937, the new Adler 2.5 was unveiled at the Berlin Motor Show. The design caused a sensation, as it was meant to reflect streamlined motion inspired by the aerodynamics of a teardrop shape. The robust 2.5-liter 6-cylinder engine coupled to a 4-speed transmission gave the vehicle good performance. This Adler model was given the nickname "Autobahn-Adler" at the time, which was meant to express its suitability for relaxed driving on the growing German Autobahn network.

31 March 2023: Computer World, Kraftwerk. (2020 Parlophone reissue of 2009 Mute/EMI editions of 1981 EMI Germany release)
In the spring of 2008 I saw German electronic-music giants Kraftwerk perform in Milwaukee and thereafter experienced an urgent quest to obtain the rest of their catalog that I didn’t own, which was basically everything except the fourth Kraftwerk album, 1974′s Autobahn. During this frantic phrase I wanted everything: German-language editions, English-language editions, and whatever oddities I could find. Much of the band’s catalog had fallen into disarray, including a period where the frightfully bad label Cleopatra obtained rights to some of it. An organized regrouping of Kraftwerk’s legendary works was necessary, and in 2009 this finally happened, beginning with a proper release of The Catalogue (or Der Catalogue, depending on what version you bought), a box including the eight Kraftwerk albums recognized by the band as canonical (they’ve disowned everything prior to Autobahn). Promo copies of a once-scuttled edition of the box had been available at steep premiums on the secondary market for a while, and more than once I almost sprang for it. When The Catalogue finally appeared as an official release, I bought it on CD. Separate vinyl editions of the eight albums from the box were issued, and I started collecting those piecemeal. Of course, as I often do, I approached this task in a half-assed way, and before long some of them were out of print and impossible to find. Kraftwerk’s global licensing arrangements during this period were complex, and depending on what territory you bought these 2009 vinyl reissues from, they’d be on either Mute Records (Germany) or EMI (the rest of Europe). The notion of imports changed a long time ago, and there was no guessing what version a store might have in stock; of the four that I bought during this run, three were on Mute and one, Radioactivity, was on EMI. The art design and packaging is consistent across these two territories’ versions, so while I like consistency I really didn’t care, so long as I accumulated them. Like I say, though, I took too long and the option vanished. At the very least I managed to purchase the first four in chronological order. I figured I’d try to acquire the remaining four somehow, probably on the secondary market, but I didn’t make any effort to do so.
Come 2020, the band’s licensing apparently changed once again, for there was a sudden rush of the 2009 vinyl issues reappearing in stores. The art design and packaging looked exactly like the Mute/EMI editions I’d collected a decade previous, but if you looked closely these 2020 versions had two differences: they were now on colored vinyl, something that seems obligatory in current-day record manufacturer, and they were now on the Parlophone label. It really wouldn’t be the same as completing my collection of the 2009 Kraftwerk reissues, but from a distance they look the same and these 2020 Parlophones were much cheaper than I expected them to be. When I stumbled across this copy of Computer World at Chicago’s new storefront Graveface Records earlier this year, I don’t think it was more than $22. I’d previously seen stores wanting $42 for Kraftwerk reissues that were Mute/EMI leftovers. I’m not sure why it took me the better part of three years to realize these things had been reissued, but part of it was probably I could never remember which ones I still needed and so I just skimmed over the Kraftwerk bin, to worry about it another day. I finally made a note on my phone about what titles I was lacking, and the day I visited Graveface and saw Computer World I was able to check that note for the first time, and all of the other information I share here followed that discovery.
Above are the front cover of Computer World, sticker showing this to be on coloured vinyl, and back cover.
Below are the front and back of the booklet. The front looks identical to the album cover, but looking closer you see the booklet has no words on its front.

Below are two other vinyl copies I own: on the left, the German original Computerwelt (EMI) and a US original Computer World (Warner Bros.). If I really wanted to go wild, I’d dig out all of my CD editions, but I’m skipping that. To illustrate just how many different labels this album has been on over the years, one of my CD copies is on Elektra.
