Retirement: not feasible. Base-model, four-banger Fox-body Ford Mustangs: no longer even aspirational. Pulling some garbage out of the junkyard and using it to get to work? Absolutely doable. First, though, you’ll need to learn from an expert about how exactly to do it. And that expert is me.

How is it possible that you can get a deal on vehicles? The important thing to remember is that automakers build way too many cars. They’re still sort of in the 1950s-ideal-Americana era, where everyone is replacing their cars every three years with brand new ones. Now, if you’re a particularly accident-prone driver, that might be true. My daily driver is about to turn fifty years old, which means that the car-making fascists have produced nearly sixteen additional unnecessary cars for me in that time. Where are all of those cars? At the junkyard.

Yes, the junkyard is absolutely crammed with worthless hoopties, all of which whose previous owners have given up on. Still, think about the last time you had to do without your car: you would have driven literally anything. And that’s what they’ve got: literally anything. Used car sites are all full of boring commuter trash, but two consecutive visits to the junkyard could turn up incredible time capsules from a farmer’s field or bankrupt auto museum. And often the nicest ones are just too good to crush, so the junkyard operators will let you cut a deal on them.

That’s how I ended up with this 1996 Chevrolet Beretta. Absolutely nobody remembers that this car exists, including my own insurance company. Cops will try to pull it over, get to the side of the road, and then forget what they were doing and leave. Does it have power? No. Does it have style? No. Do both the doors work? Not if you want them to open and close. What it does have, though, is the ability to get me to work without having to spend too much money. Unfortunately, I keep forgetting where I parked it, decide I must not have driven a car at all, and keep trying to walk home. On the other hand, the junkyard is on the way there. Maybe I have more than one of these, come to think of it.

The provincial government has vowed to take steps to close a troubling loophole that allows prohibited drivers to buy vehicle insurance in their name through ICBC, following Global News reporting. Roy Heide was a prohibited driver with no licence before he earned the dubious distinction of holding what the Abbotsford Police Department believes is the worst impaired driving rap sheet in Canadian history. Yet ahead of the August 2022 crash that secured his 21st impaired driving conviction last month, Abbotsford police said Heide was able to insure his motorcycle with B.C.’s public auto insurer as the registered owner.

Las Almas originally caught your eye during a family trip as a child. Originally, you were only meant to drive through the city to get to your campsite in the countryside but your car's front left tire caught a flat. That put a damper in your family's plans to say the least. You imagined what it would be like living there, becoming part of the circle and learning each and every one of these current strangers. The city enchanted you, to say the least.

Alas, your father got the flat fixed and you all were able to make it to the campsite before sundown, but you weren't nearly done with the city. You did plenty of research on the city as the time passed. Keeping up with its politics, frequently checking the real estate, even visiting a handful of times before you decided that this was something you really wanted to do.

You managed to snag a great deal on a café that had a two bedroom flat upstairs. The previous owners had enough of Las Almas and was willing to sell it for dirt cheap all things considered. The building itself was in great shape, and they even left most of their equipment. Being a connoisseur of all types of coffees and teas, you figured this would be easy work. And it was, eventually. People came for coffee and stayed for the atmosphere, and soon you were known by the townspeople as "la señora del café". The coffee lady. You took the nickname in stride and it encouraged you to keep up with the hard work to maintain a healthy and safe environment for your customers. Eventually you earned enough money to hire some employees. Mostly teens who just wanted cash to burn, but you would prefer them spending their time working in your shop than getting involved with criminal activity.

Your cousin on the other hand found a desk job. He moved with you to Las Almas not only to make sure you were okay but because he needed the change in scenery. With the two incomes and a lack of a need to commute on your end, money was almost never tight. Sometimes there were slow months, but you two eventually anticipated them and budgeted preemptively.

The townspeople loved you and treated you as a local despite only moving there as an adult. They protected you, making sure after any particular shootout close to your home that you and your cousin were okay. One time an altercation outside the shop left several bullet holes in your buildings outer wall. By the time you got up and went downstairs that morning to check, men from all ages were patching up the walls and assuring you they'd repaint the area once the cement dried. In return, you served them all lemonade and freshly baked goods for their labor in the sun.

It wasn't always like this, though. Your first few months in Las Almas were tricky to say the least. The townsfolk were wary of you, figuring you were just some hipster young woman hoping to gentrify their area. They talked about you around town, asking each other what they thought of you and if they'd been to your café yet. You still got customers, but it mostly seemed like people trying to size your place up and judge you without taking the time to talk to you. You couldn't quite blame them. They'd seen a lot these past few years what with the Cartel moving in, last thing they need is someone trying to profit off of their town's misery by buying a cheap shop and selling overpriced coffee. Even though that's... not at all what you were trying to do. If anything, your prices were pretty normal if not a little cheaper. They'd know that if they gave you a chance. It left you rather discouraged for a while. Eventually you thought your parents may have been right, and you hated when they were right.

But one fateful day, one of those hopeless days where you thought of going back home, a soldier came in. He had his rifle strapped to his back and wore the typical green camouflage uniform. Removing his shades, he found a seat at one of the many empty tables and you scooped up a notepad and pen to greet him.

He smiled at you. "Afternoon, Señorita."

"Welcome, Señor. Can I interest you in a concha? Do you need a menu?"

"No thank you Señorita, just a shot of espresso will suffice."

You nodded, wilting inwardly considering you spent the early hours of the morning making those conchas. But this was progress! You'd never had a soldier in your shop before, maybe he would enjoy your service and recommend your shop to his friends. Soldiers needed coffee, right?

While the press was brewing his espresso you turned to face him. "What is your name, Señorita?" He asked from where he sat, which was within earshot from the contraption you were working.

You told him, and he smiled. Uh oh, his smile was cute. Everything about him was cute, now that you started to notice. His black hair was slicked back neatly, and he was working on a five o'clock shadow. He appeared to be your age, two years older at max you thought. He had nicely defined cheekbones and jawline, too.

"A beautiful name." He said before cocking his head to the side slightly "Why the long face?" He asked.

You scrambled to come up with an excuse for your persistent frown. "No reason, I suppose I'm a bit sleepy if anything." You lied. You were totally upset because he was your first customer in days and didn't even buy a concha.

He grinned. "A sleepy coffee shop owner?"

You laughed bashfully as you took his espresso from the machine and brought it to him. "Well, when you word it like that it sounds ridiculous. It's not long until I can have a siesta, though." You said, looking upwards at a clock on the wall that read 11:54.

He nodded and thanked you for the coffee, and if he wasn't going to purchase anything else you rung up his bill.

He took a sip and raised his brows slightly. "Ay, this is great. What blend is this?" He asked.

"Oh, it's a blonde roast I had shipped from The States." You answered. Despite being less bitter in taste, the blonde roast actually had a higher caffeine content than most dark roasts.

"If you keep this in stock I may just keep coming back." He joked.

"You'd be my number one customer. My only customer, really." You sighed.

"Don't get much business?"

You looked around at the empty seats, biting back the urge to be sarcastic. "No, not really. A few tourists have come in, but I'm still trying to win the favor of the locals."

"I see. They'll come around once they know your intentions here are good, as well as the coffee."

You smiled weakly but jumped when your timer went off. Dismissing it, you excused yourself and jogged into the kitchen to pull freshly baked bread out of the oven and slice it.

By the time you returned, the man was gone. He left the money for his espresso on the bill you had left on the counter as well as a tip easily twice the amount of the original price. Picking up the money, you noticed he'd written something on the bill.

Hello Glorious Bitches, I’m living in a house on my own for the first time in my life. While I *CAN* get a roommate I don’t want one. I have 2 big concerns living on my own as a single woman.

As someone who had her home broken into and robbed while sleeping... I totally relate to your fears (if anyone wants to hear the story, just ask). I'll link to our full insurance advice at the end, but here are my suggestions for security right now:

Not clear if you're saying you need RENTER'S insurance or HOME OWNER'S insurance. Different things. But you can typically bundle them with your auto insurance. So I'd start by calling (or visiting the website of) your auto insurance if you have it. If not... use GEICO. (They're not paying me to recommend them. And they don't have to.)

If you get renter's insurance, read the fine print 9 times or so to make sure you understand it. When our house was robbed, insurance didn't pay out a cent because of a nuance in the contract.

Take a time-stamped photo of all your valuables. Upload those photos to a secure folder on the cloud or somewhere you can access them if all your devices are stolen. This proves ownership.

Invest in physical security devices, not just robots. What I mean is, a really good deadbolt or door-blocker that relies on physics is much more comforting than an ADT alarm. Likewise a fireproof safe bolted to the closet wall for important documents.

Make sure it's hard to get into your home through anything other than the front door. Are there large rocks or outdoor furniture under your windows? Move 'em. Do your windows close all the way? Do they all lock?

Some people are really comforted by security cameras that alert to movement in their home and contact them via cell phone when they're out. If you're worried about coming home to a dangerous stranger, this might be a good idea for you.

In American consumer lore, the automobile has always been a “freedom machine” and liberty lies on the open road. “Americans are a race of independent people” whose “ancestors came to this country for the sake of freedom and adventure,” the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce’s soon-to-be-president, Roy Chapin, declared in 1924. “The automobile satisfies these instincts.” During the Cold War, vehicles with baroque tail fins and oodles of surplus chrome rolled off the assembly line, with Native American names like Pontiac, Apache, Dakota, Cherokee, Thunderbird and Winnebago — the ultimate expressions of capitalist triumph and Manifest Destiny.

But for many low-income and minority Americans, automobiles have been turbo-boosted engines of inequality, immobilizing their owners with debt, increasing their exposure to hostile law enforcement, and in general accelerating the forces that drive apart haves and have-nots.

Though progressive in intent, the Biden administration’s signature legislative achievements on infrastructure and climate change will further entrench the nation’s staunch commitment to car production, ownership and use. The recent Inflation Reduction Act offers subsidies for many kinds of vehicles using alternative fuel, and should result in real reductions in emissions, but it includes essentially no direct incentives for public transit — by far the most effective means of decarbonizing transport. And without comprehensive policy efforts to eliminate discriminatory policing and predatory lending, merely shifting to electric from combustion will do nothing to reduce car owners’ ever-growing risk of falling into legal and financial jeopardy, especially those who are poor or Black.

By the 1940s, African American car owners had more reason than anyone to see their vehicles as freedom machines, as a means to escape, however temporarily, redlined urban ghettos in the North or segregated towns in the South. But their progress on roads outside of the metro core was regularly obstructed by the police, threatened by vigilante assaults, and stymied by owners of whites-only restaurants, lodgings and gas stations. Courts granted the police vast discretionary authority to stop and search for any one of hundreds of code violations — powers that they did not apply evenly. Today, officers make more than 50,000 traffic stops a day. Driving while Black has become a major route to incarceration — or much worse. When Daunte Wright was killed by a police officer in April 2021, he had been pulled over for an expired registration tag on his car’s license plate. He joined the long list of Black drivers whose violent and premature deaths at the hands of police were set in motion by a minor traffic infraction — Sandra Bland (failure to use a turn signal), Maurice Gordon (alleged speeding), Samuel DuBose (missing front license plate) and Philando Castile and Walter Scott (broken taillights) among them. Despite widespread criticism of the flimsy pretexts used to justify traffic stops, and the increasing availability of cellphone or police body cam videos, the most recent data shows that the number of deaths from police-driver interactions is almost as high as it has been over the past five years.

In the consumer arena, cars have become tightly sprung debt traps. The average monthly auto loan payment crossed $700 for the first time this year, which does not include insurance or maintenance costs. Subprime lending and longer loan terms of up to 84 months have resulted in a doubling of auto loan debt over the last decade and a notable surge in the number of drivers who are “upside down”— owing more money than their cars are worth. But, again, the pain is not evenly distributed. Auto financing companies often charge nonwhite consumers higher interest rates than white consumers, as do insurers.

Formerly incarcerated buyers whose credit scores are depressed from inactivity are especially red meat to dealers and predatory lenders. In our research, we spoke to many such buyers who found it easier, upon release from prison, to acquire expensive cars than to secure an affordable apartment. Some, like LeMarcus, a Black Brooklynite (whose name has been changed to protect his privacy under ethical research guidelines), discovered that loans were readily available for a luxury vehicle but not for the more practical car he wanted. Even with friends and family willing to help him with a down payment, after he spent roughly five years in prison, his credit score made it impossible to get a Honda or “a regular car.” Instead, relying on a friend to co-sign a loan, he was offered a high-interest loan on a pre-owned Mercedes E350. LeMarcus knew it was a bad deal, but the dealer told him the bank that would have financed a Honda “wanted a more solid foundation, good credit, income was showing more,” but that to finance the Mercedes, it “was actually willing to work with the people with lower credit and lower down payments.” We interviewed many other formerly incarcerated people who followed a similar path, only to see their cars repossessed.

LeMarcus was “car rich, cash poor,” a common and precarious condition that can have serious legal consequences for low-income drivers, as can something as simple as a speeding ticket. A $200 ticket is a meaningless deterrent to a hedge fund manager from Greenwich, Conn., who is pulled over on the way to the golf club, but it could be a devastating blow to those who mow the fairways at the same club. If they cannot pay promptly, they will face cascading penalties. If they cannot take a day off work to appear in court, they risk a bench warrant or loss of their license for debt delinquency. Judges in local courts routinely skirt the law of the land (in Supreme Court decisions like Bearden v. Georgia and Timbs v. Indiana) by disregarding the offender’s ability to pay traffic debt. At the request of collection agencies, they also issue arrest or contempt warrants for failure to appear in court on unpaid auto loan debts. With few other options to travel to work, millions of Americans make the choice to continue driving even without a license, which means their next traffic stop may land them in jail.

The pathway that leads from a simple traffic fine to financial insolvency or detention is increasingly crowded because of the spread of revenue policing intended to generate income from traffic tickets, court fees and asset forfeiture. Fiscally squeezed by austerity policies, officials extract the funds from those least able to pay. This is not only an awful way to fund governments; it is also a form of backdoor, regressive taxation that circumvents voters’ input.

Deadly traffic stops, racially biased predatory lending and revenue policing have all come under public scrutiny of late, but typically they are viewed as distinct realms of injustice, rather than as the interlocking systems that they are. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it: A traffic stop can result in fines or arrest; time behind bars can result in repossession or a low credit score; a low score results in more debt and less ability to pay fines, fees and surcharges. Championed as a kind of liberation, car ownership — all but mandatory in most parts of the country — has for many become a vehicle of capture and control.

Industry boosters promise us that technological advances like on-demand transport, self-driving electric vehicles and artificial intelligence-powered traffic cameras will smooth out the human errors that lead to discrimination, and that car-sharing will reduce the runaway costs of ownership. But no combination of apps and cloud-based solutions can ensure that the dealerships, local municipalities, courts and prison industries will be willing to give up the steady income they derive from shaking down motorists.

Aside from the profound need for accessible public transportation, what could help? Withdraw armed police officers from traffic duties, just as they have been from parking and tollbooth enforcement in many jurisdictions. Introduce income-graduated traffic fines. Regulate auto lending with strict interest caps and steep penalties for concealing fees and add-ons and for other well-known dealership scams. Crack down hard on the widespread use of revenue policing. And close the back door to debtors’ prisons by ending the use of arrest warrants in debt collection cases. Without determined public action along these lines, technological advances often end up reproducing deeply rooted prejudices. As Malcolm X wisely said, “Racism is like a Cadillac; they bring out a new model every year.”

Once, long ago, my area was full of folks that rode around on horses. They used to call it the Horse-Drawn Age, but I prefer to call it Whinnying and Dining, little horse joke there. Eventually, people found out that cars are easier, and let you go further distances, and you don’t feel so bad when you beat on them out of a corner. Most importantly: cars don’t eat when they’re not being driven.

In case you’re unfamiliar, horses need to eat all the time. You have to keep stuffing food and water in their gobs. On the contrary, my car only needs to be refuelled after a lot of driving, or potentially after it’s been sitting for a couple months and the pinhole in the tank has leaked all of its gas out. This extra maintenance and expense is the primary reason why you don’t see people with hundreds of horses, unlike the common automotive hoarder like myself.

Sure, there are probably horse hobbyists out there trying to get the weirdest and most decrepit horses, but they’re not gonna find a vintage pony sitting in some farmer’s field, ignored for the last thirty-seven years. The numbers just aren’t there for it. On the other hand, if you put too many horses together in one location, you’ll soon end up with even more horses – for free – through a phenomenon that my dad promised he would explain to me before he ran off to join that Mexican circus and never came back. Those new horses need food of their own, of course, and soon any money you planned to save by not having to pay for auto insurance is quickly eaten up by equine food.

Finally, horses do not respond well to horsepower-adding mods, possibly because horse owners have no money left over after constantly feeding their garage full of horses. Horse racing is a huge business, where there is serious money to be made by going slightly faster than the other guy, but you can’t spend $300 on eBay to add a turbocharger to your Clydesdale. And even if you could, you’d probably have to feed it a lot fancier food to fatten up the ratio and avoid knock when you take it down the strip.

Customers’ perceptions can make or break your business. Deliver quality experiences and products, and they’ll fastly sing your praises on social media; mess it up, and they’ll tell the world even faster. Fast growth depends on making your current and potential customers happy.

“Compared with large companies, small businesses are nimble and often better able to see, anticipate and respond to their customers’ needs,” DeHetre said. “The most successful small businesses exploit this advantage by bringing new and innovative products and services to market more quickly and developing and nurturing long-term customer relationships.”

Dennis Tanjeloff, president and CEO of Astro Gallery of Gems, agreed. He said listening to your customers and giving them what they want is of utmost importance.

“Diversify your offerings so you can best cater to the customers’ changing tastes,” Tanjeloff said. “Remember, you are here to serve the customer — it’s why you are open for business.”

6. Invest in yourself

In the early stages of your business, you’ll likely see a very lean profit margin (or no profit at all), so any money you make should go directly to helping your business grow.

“A startup’s capability to invest in itself [helps] accelerate growth,” Lanng said. “In those departed years, it’s critical to make sure that you’re redirecting any revenues back into the company. It’s vital to invest early and heavily in order to grow quickly.”

While it might be tempting to pocket all of your profits, it’s better to invest in your business’s growth so you can reap bigger benefits later. Determine which parts of your business need more consideration. For example, do you need to hire more workers, expand your marketing efforts, or secure additional funding? When you find an important area that needs development, give that area your financial support.

7. Always think ahead.

While activity is a vital quality for a startup, you can’t fly by the seat of your pants when you’re running a business. Planning your next step — in expectation of all possible scenarios — is the best way to stay grounded and secure as your business develops.

Thinking ahead is broad advice, but it can be as simple as reviewing all in-process contracts, like comparing rates with the best credit card processors and seeing if you can negotiate a better deal.
