Month 7, day 15, more translation work done! Finished out (most of) the Athian alphabet and translated that new piece of paper I found :D
That paper is weird; the start of the article is on the right side of the paper, and is talking about a machine that crushes stuff into powder for medicine. Then about two thirds to three quarters of the way down in the left column, it turns into some kind of documentation about Autodesk Maya 2011 features compared to Autodesk Maya 2010.
I also made a discovery! Cuff's scan of the baddies gives you the monsters' names in Athian below their English name :D I bet I could also get the rest of the numerical characters by paying attention and being quick with the screenshot button when I play through memories, since those have dates in them and I've watched them switch from Athian to English.

One thing that continues to truly annoy me about Forspoken's poor reception is the claim that "oh, the devs didn't care, they didn't try, they were just lazy and bad and made a shitty game with no effort in it."
Because like, there is absolutely effort in this game.
There are so many little things that didn't have to be there that are. The Athian alphabet is a perfect example.
Did they need to make up a new alphabet and write little bits and bobs in it? No. They did not. There is nothing about the gameplay, or indeed the story, that demands a new alphabet and associated, translatable script.
Yet it's there! In places so few players even bothered to look, it's there and ready for someone to enjoy it, even if "someone" is only a handful of very dedicated people on Tumblr.
And it's still an effort. It's still something "extra" that someone worked on to make this game and its world more rich. And like, it upsets me that people ignore that effort.

the first time out of nowhere when they are eating terrible food or reading together that Auden says "you know that you are not just my friend, Frey? You are my family" and Frey doesn't hear it for several moments and then she does.
the book is open in front of her and yet the Athian script letters don't spell anything. the only word cascading through her heart and memories is family. not with 'foster' in front of it. not with any modifiers. family. repeated over and over until it becomes just sounds and almost doesn't feel like a word anymore family.
There are droplets on the page. there are tears in Frey's eyes. Auden has stood up and crossed to her side of the table to put a hand on her shoulder. When Frey pushes her head into Auden's stomach like a child Auden wraps her in the circle of her arms. Like comfort and kindness is where Frey belongs.

okay cooking up a theory on where a fs2 might have gone,, under the cut cuz it got a bit long LMAO
first of all. the first tanta had 7 buddies (other tantas?). we know athia had 4 tantas so presumably the other 3 were rheddig. backed up pretty well by the DLC.
second of all. she also writes that the rheddah were allies before they set the demon (sussy) on athia, the first time around.
third. cipal's mausoleum archive entry makes an off hand reference to it being a) older than cipal itself and b) believed to be where the souls of all athian souls go to rest (tho no one knows where that belief came from!).
so: before the first tanta formed athia as four realms with four tantas, athia was friends with the rheddig and they both had tantas leading them in some capacity. theres very little (readable) writing down around this time - the archives even note that the athian script was devised by the first tantas. presumably little to no writing happened before this - at the very least nothing that survived y'know, everything.
theory: this belief is from the rheddah, but was never written down, possibly because of everything that happened with susurrus and possibly because of general (presumed) hatred of the rheddig for unleashing him (1st time). and, going out on a limb, its related to that machine in visoria that has an archive entry of an "error" occuring around when susurrus gets released in the gloaming (2nd time).
i really think the second game would have gone into rheddah and said yes, we all used to be under a united banner and/or the rheddah were working under a larger technological power.
god just,,, the lore that there wouldve been 😭🫠

The new footage reveals more details about the protagonist Frey, a directionless, gritty yet street smart young woman who has persevered despite her rough upbringing in New York City.
The new story trailer also gives fans a closer look at Forspoken‘s magic-infused combat and swift, dynamic movement, playing a key role in gameplay. Through the course of her journey, Frey will learn to cast and harness dozens of different types of magic and cast powerful spells as she traverses through the beautiful yet cruel land of Athia. Frey’s quest in Athia will take her through a variety of diverse environments where she will use magic enhanced parkour. This dynamic and acrobatic movement, enhanced by Frey’s mystical abilities, enables her to magically flow, zip and float across the vast landscapes of Athia in a fast and fluid manner.
Other key characters in Forspoken are highlighted in the trailer, including Frey’s companion ‘Cuff,’ a magical sentient bracelet, voiced by actor Jonathan Cake (Stargirl), who helps her navigate the sprawling landscapes of Athia. Players are also introduced to Tanta Sila, a maddened and evil ruler who is the strongest and most formidable Tanta, or matriarch, in Athia, as she and Frey face off in an explosive and action-packed battle. Performed and voiced by actress and musician Janina Gavankar (True Blood), Tanta Sila’s debut offers fans a glimpse of the formidable enemies that await in Athia. Keala Settle (The Greatest Showman) and Monica Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick) also make an appearance as Johedy and Auden, fellow Athians who befriend and assist Frey with her journey.
SQUARE ENIX and Luminous Productions worked in collaboration with Hollywood writer Gary Whitta (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), who conceived the original concept, and award-winning writer/director Amy Hennig (Uncharted series), who developed the story concept in 2019 (prior to heading Skydance New Media). Taking the reins as Lead Writers on Forspoken‘s story and script, talented entertainment writers Allison Rymer (Shadowhunters) and Todd Stashwick (Devil Inside) have crafted a thrilling tale about self-discovery and finding out where you belong in the world.
“Writing Forspoken has been a magical experience,” said Rymer. “The main character Frey is strong, complex and very relatable. I am excited for the players to connect with her.”
Stashwick added, “Like Frey, it’s been a long, amazing journey for us. I’m thrilled to finally have people adventure through the story we have built. I’m so proud to be part of this team, giving a contemporary, fun, spin on the fantasy genre.”
Square Enix and Luminous Productions also unveiled that the score is composed by BAFTA award-winning composers Bear McCreary (God of War (2018) and TV series The Walking Dead) and Garry Schyman (Bioshock series). Together, they set the unconventional tone of the game by immersing players into a world of twisted beauty while fusing contemporary electronic beats with a fantasy tone.
“We’re incredibly excited to be working together to compose the soundtrack for Forspoken. When we first read the script for the game, we were moved by Frey’s dynamic character and the contrasting themes of modern and fantasy that run throughout the story, which is something we wanted to reflect in the music we compose for the soundtrack,” said McCreary and Schyman.

More cleanup work done! This time on the gold part of the lettering. Next is the white part, and I want to make some changes to how those show up because the way ProCreate's font tool hollowed out the letters is... I mean, it's good, I'm not sure how it could have done better considering it's a procedural generation based on the outer edge of the character, like there's math and shit involved. But I'm an ~*artist*~ and I'm pretty sure I can make it look better lol

Did a little bit of translation work tonight because I'm struggling to read Athian again and I wanted to practice it :)
I was not expecting information on pilgrims on papers that look like diagrams for something lol. Anyway, these are papers pinned to the boards inside of the Cognoscent's Guilds. My kingdom for rips of these texture/image files so I can have cleaner, clearer text to work with. Alas, these will have to do

The birbnado (birb tornado) may not have worked with the rotational symmetry tool as well as the sunburst lines did, but I managed to finagle the tool into working well enough I only have to draw half the birbs instead of the full circle of them :D
"Horizontal rotational symmetry" sounds like absolute bullshit, though :P

@silentspaces is a GENIUS and reminded me in our Discord group chat that radial symmetry tools exist which made doing the lines SO MUCH EASIER!!!
Unfortunately the birb ring doesn't really work with that tool since it's off-center and fills the whole canvas, but that's okay, because I'm less likely to go cross-eyed and/or get a headache tracing over all of them :)
