Atelier Totori Plus Opinions
Those who paid attention to my rankings are already aware that, at the end of the day, this is my least-favorite Atelier game in the series.  Which is something that really bothers me, because there are a lot of great elements to this game. The game has a strong alchemy and combat system, and introduces a serious storyline that spans the whole game (sort of).  Totori herself also winds up being my favorite of the Arland alchemists, and characters as a whole are fairly strong, barring a few exceptions.  There are just a lot of things that, I feel, hold it back. The game is still fantastic, and even the lowest-ranked Atelier game is more enjoyable to me than most other games out there, but, well, someone had to be at the bottom of a list.  And unfortunately, that's Totori.
CHARACTERS As a whole, characters are fairly solid, with a few that stand out as among my least-favorites in the entire series.  Those who are good are fantastic, and those who are bad are intolerable.  Thankfully, the good outweighs the bad.
Totori - Totori is adorable.  She's the most serious of the Arland alchemists, and shows a level of competence that we didn't get too often with Rorona, who was portrayed in a more joking fashion despite her talents.  Yes, a lot of characters talk down to her about her abilities, but I think what she accomplishes ultimately shines past Gino being an insufferable little shit all the time.  Totori is incredibly precious and enjoyable, and is a great mix of serious and studious with goofy and somewhat awkward.  I love her to pieces.
Gino - We begin with the bad. Gino is insufferable.  He's just obnoxious.  He is hyper to a fault, and is direct to a very dire fault.  Instead of a fairly endearing portrayal, they went for the option where he has zero social skills, is constantly a rude little shit, and does nothing of value but be a putz and whine about when Totori starts out-performing him.  His entire character story is him being a butthurt baby over Totori being stronger than him now.  Gino is awful.
Melvia - but he was not the worst.  Melvia gets that spot.  She would be generally fine.  She's portrayed as the strongest of the group, and is very direct in her interactions with others.  However, she loses massive points for the same reason that, say, Nozomi from Love Live loses points: the groping other people gag.  I think it only happens with Rorona when you have them explore together, but trust me, once is enough.  In fact, most of her initial interactions with characters when you go exploring are unpleasant.  Melvia is basically just a sexual deviant, and quite frankly, that's an automatic failure in my book.
Mimi - The best girl of this game.  Mimi is basically Cordelia 2.0, but with a bit more of a history.  Mimi's mother died of illness, and she's very focused on making her family name famous.  She's abrasive toward Totori, while at the same time being very clearly attached to her.  It's really cute, to the point it’s honestly one of the few ships I have attachment to at all.  Mimi tries her best, but has the same issues as Cordelia of being unable to honestly express her feelings toward others.  Unless that feeling is anger.  Then she's fine.  Like I said with Cordelia, struggling with their own emotions is a character trait I adore in all its facets, so surprise that I like Mimi best.
Marc - Marc is hysterical.  He's all about robotics, and is a man of science.  Of course, that comes with not always understanding the intricacies of social etiquette (”What, you didn’t know I was joking about using a live cat’s skin to cover the cat robot?”).  He just winds up being funny and engaging, and I generally appreciate his presence.
Rorona - Rorona returns, and she's fantastic.  Seeing Rorona in a teaching role really is something else.  She's still her air-headed self.  Very competent and skilled, but cannot teach for the life of her.  But, she's trying her best, and really wants to be a good teacher. It's sweet to see her interactions with Totori, literally the only one who understands her inane directions.
Cordelia - YEAH, CORDELIA!  Cordelia returns, as head of the adventurer's guild.  She's just as forceful as always, but has calmed down a bit since Rorona. She's more in control of her anger, and seems a bit more honest with herself, which is great.  I love to see that kind of development.
Iksel - Iksel came back!  I'm sure all five of his fans are very happy.
Sterk - The final returning character, and possibly the most involved?   Arland is a republic now, and thus Sterk has lost his standing as a knight.  Sterk is less than thrilled about it, and continues to insist he is a knight and acts accordingly, while hunting down Gio to establish the old monarchy once again.  Sterk's character is one burdened by regrets and the loss of his only perceived calling in life, and this really shines with his interactions with Gino.  While Gino winds up being obnoxious because he's just sad Totori beat him, Sterk presents as someone who is understanding of his position, having lost to Rorona and felt the blow to his pride as a knight who is weaker than the one he's protecting, but also forceful in how to overcome it.  It's a good balance, I feel.
Ceci - Totori's sister can be precious, though she doesn't have a lot of presence, I feel, until you start getting into her own history as an adventurer and why she stepped down. She's good, just not super interesting to me.
Guid - Can I just remark how much his recurring gag of being invisible irks me?   Because it does.  Still, he's alright.  Like Ceci, nothing interesting about him until he starts building the ship and re-kindles that passion he once had.
Gerhard - or whatever his name was.  Bartender man.  He’s okay.
Pamela - the ghost girl returns, but alive this time?  Or something?  We’re not too sure.  She sure continues to be a great source of entertainment though.
Peter - So my housemate Pat has this really hilarious nerd voice he does for characters like Peter, and I wish I could project it through text, but instead, here’s a link to Peter’s actual english voice.  They’re almost the same tone anyway.  Peter’s a nerd loser, and thankfully the game treats him as such.
Tiffani - She’s back.  Same issue as before.  I really don’t care for the drunk Tiffani trophies...
Hagel - Hagel has been promoted to the best shopkeeper of all time for commenting that if Totori is feeling embarrassed about the clothes she wears that she should maybe put on a pair of tights.  While part of me is definitely just happy that someone suggested a more conservative look (which I always appreciate), the specific suggestion for tights is an immediate bonus.  Hagel knows what’s good.
Filly - Esty’s younger sister.  She’s an oddball.  Nothing against her at all, but she doesn’t really stand out beyond the super relatable characteristic of hating her job.
STORY Totori has a real story!  Totori's mother was an adventurer who once went exploring across the ocean, and never returned.  Totori is sure that her mother is alive out there somewhere, and is determined to become an adventurer to search for her mother.  The people in her home village of Alanya are worried, but ultimately Totori persists and becomes an adventurer and begins her search.  It's easy to get sidetracked from this, but after three years and renewing your license, the search begins in earnest as you construct a ship and start to re-trace your mother's footsteps, straight into a village designed to be sacrificed to a demon within the tower nearby.  Your goal then is to fulfill the mission your mother could not and defeat the demon within.  Your path winds up encompassing both your quest to become a proper adventurer, but also to succeed your mother.  It's honestly a really strong element to the game.  I’ve said this before, but it bears repeating: you don’t need a super complex plot to be a successful one, and Totori is a good example of that.
SETTING It's still Arland, only expanded to include Alanya as well.  Both locations do feel highly distinct, with Arland being a clear city compared to the small town of Alanya.  What really makes this world feel open is that you stop at several points along the way, and it has a much more significant feel of adventure.  When the ocean opens up, it really feels like there's a ton of extra metaphorical ground to cover, and seeing only a piece of the other continent opens up the potential for the Totori and Mimi Adventures ending, where they seek to travel beyond the areas already known.  The only drawback is that there still isn't much that's been dug into.  Arland is a republic now.  Nothing has changed.   Gio commented that it wouldn't, but it's still obnoxious to see how literally nothing about this dramatic shift in government structure had an impact on the region.  It's just those kinds of things that could be explored to some degree that would make for interesting story points that just...are never addressed.
SYNTHESIS SYSTEM Unlike Rorona Plus, Totori Plus has a very simple synthesis system, in that there's no combining of traits.  This allows for the perfect traits to show up way earlier than usual, and require little to no chaining of items to obtain what is needed.  In a way, this is kinda nice.  It simplifies the system considerably, and removes unneeded anxiety around getting just the right skills.  On the other, it takes away some of the engagement of trying to find the optimal assortment, and chaining items to achieve a goal.  The Cost system returns, but with no traits to increase cost, so it's all just a matter of having the better ingredients, which is how they get you to chain traits to other items.   It's not bad, necessarily, but it does feel much more simplified and bare-bones than the other games.
BATTLE SYSTEM Totori is like an inverse Rorona.  Equipment matters, but nowhere near as much as items.  In early-game, you are going to use items constantly, because they are hyper-vital.  In late-game, equipment and skills can account for a lot, but ultimately your items are going to determine what's best. A good N/A and Himmelstern combined with a good Dimension Egg is how you beat virtually every major boss, with everything outside of Orthogalaxen going down to this combo without even getting a turn.   When you use Rorona to double up on the fun, basically nothing in the game stands a chance.  This is an element I adore. I really feel like it's appropriate for the items you craft to be the thing that leads to victory.  It just feels right, you know?
OTHER MECHANICS Unfortunately, wholesale will not retain the best traits, which means you cannot register your ultimate bombs and buy them back infinitely.  Instead, you need the Chims!  Rorona creates her own versions of Hom called Chims, and you can get up to five if you find the Water of Lifes. Waters of Life? The Chim-Maker items. Each Chim can then duplicate ingredients or items you have in your inventory. Unlike Hom, Chims are best used to duplicate synthesized items, as they make exact copies without having to use ingredients.  As a result, you can make a few good N/A, and have Chims copy them to maintain your stock.  The only downside is that they're fairly slow.  It can take a tremendous amount of time to copy the good bombs and Elixers, which means your stock is never too high.   So resources need to be used conservatively and only as needed.  Which isn't too tough, considering how quickly you run train on the post-game superbosses with the right trait setup.
There's also the license points.  License points are used...primarily just to increase rank.  Rank increases will open up new areas and new explicit tasks to complete.  Sometimes, this involves making stronger boss enemies appear in previous locations, and other times it's opening up new large areas. It's basically how you determine where you can and cannot go, one step at a time, without opening up the entire map at once.  I really don't know how I feel about it.  It's a little...arbitrary?  But I can't complain.  I do think Meruru had the more interesting way to open up a world map, though.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS I mentioned in Rorona that the Arland trilogy is the trilogy with a few more uncomfortable fan-service moments than I would like.  None are as bad as Totori.  Comments on "sex appeal" are more frequent than I'd like (read: above 0), Melvia is the way she is in most interactions with new female characters, the swimsuit contest is a thing that happens, and oh god the Guardian hunt...  The raw number of times this game made me wish it would stop is unfortunate.
There's also a bigger issue in the events.   Like Rorona, character events occur when they reach certain friendship levels.  Unlike Rorona, Totori has two central areas, and events are exclusive to each location.  Often without any indication that they're happening, and frequently with time-specific activation periods.  So you can miss entire events just by being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The conditions are also super obtuse. At one point in my playthrough, I tried setting up for the Spring Cup trick, only to realize I didn't have the recipe for the Spring Cup.  Rorona was supposed to give it to me, but hadn't.  Why?  Because I had to synthesize a specific item in the OTHER atelier, to activate a scene with Ceci, before Rorona's scenes would miraculously start occurring.   Then there's the time I completely lost access to Pamela's shop for the rest of the game because I went to one place first before going to her shop, and the scenes played out of order and locked me out of her return.  It's that level of obtuse nonsense that drove me up a wall while playing, and it's honestly this piece that causes it to rank at the bottom.  I can tolerate a lot.  But I cannot tolerate being constantly frustrated by not knowing where or when things will happen. Just a simple indication through an exclamation point over the town things are happening in would ease problems a lot.
There's also no development items, which I guess is fine, but I love those things and think it's nonsense that they didn't add them in the Plus version.  At least let me travel faster on the map, you butts!
CONCLUDING THOUGHTS Atelier Totori Plus is still a fun game, but it is, bar none, the most obtuse and frustrating of the games.  There are pieces that I enjoy tremendously, but there are also pieces that are just incredibly irritating to experience.  I still love the game, and I'm at a point where I think I've figured out the obtuse portions of the game and how to get events to activate.  But wow, it's such a frustrating learning curve at times.  Definitely worth playing, but also definitely worthy of the least-favorite spot in the series.
If you enjoyed this (for some reason), consider checking out the write-ups for the other games in the series as well!

This isn’t new, but I’ve previously shared their chibis separately years ago.
These are the first three Atelier series’ bookmarks I ever drew, and I followed it up in the future with the Dusk series, Atelier Marie, and Mana Khemia. I still regularly sell these at the artist alleys I attend, and they can still be purchased from me online. :>

Atelier Lulua completely blindsided me but now I’m so excited, you have no idea. Arland is what got me into Atelier, Rorona is still a top fav character, Arland feels like home, and I just-- wow.
So excited but a bit afraid yet I want to think positively. Okay a few thoguhts:
-> Rorona HAD A KID = Meruru Plus ending is canon as it should be! Is Sterk the father? Will we find out? (we BETTER) Also, is this the first time an Atelier Protag has a canon child?
-Will other characters have kids too? Like Totori?
-Will Esty have gotten married?!
- GIVE ME ADULT IKSEL PLEASE
-AND GINO TOO
- the certain teacher is def someone we know, most likely Meruru, to continue the trend of student becoming master as well.
(funny thing, I’ve foten thought about a story about Rorona and Sterk’s kid (a son tho) who is besties with Totori and Mimi’s alchemy-assisted-born son but that is besides the point I guess)
I don’t know where this post is going. Nowhere I guess. I’m just REALLY excited because ARLAND

Finished Atelier Totori.
I had fun with it, but it’s a serious step back when coming into it after Atelier Rorona Plus.
Though, while Meruru/Rorona Plus’ various quality of life improvements are certainly many, I feel that Totori’s biggest issues are less those, and more those involving general story and gameplay structure.
Where games like Annie, Rorona and Meruru gives you a clear end goal at the start and the means by which you need to achieve them, Totori only gives you a vague mission to find Totori’s mom, while sending you on missions to increase your adventurer ranking which ultimately doesn’t tie well into the “main” plot.
Ultimately this means that in the other games you’ll consistently feel like you’re making progress towards the game, but in Totori you never really know where you at in the story until you accidentally stumble upon the next story thread. What makes this worse is that none of the important story missions, such as the lengthy synthesis of the ship parts or the repeated, lengthy trips to the nameless village, or fighting the big demon final boss guy, give you any meaningful amount of points towards your adventurer license, so making progress in one of the main aspects of the game means forgoing progress in the other main aspect, which cuts down on the fun, especially when the other games are really good at tying the various aspects into each other and creating a solid feedback loop that leaves you with a constant feeling of progress.
Coupled with that are some rather obtuse requirements for character endings, such as Mimi’s need to get an adventurer rank up, which can become difficult if you’re currently in a position where you’ve already had most of your rank ups. It’s the kind of stuff that’s effectively impossible without using a guide, which massively cuts into the fun you can have with a game.
Ultimately, I still feel that Atelier Totori is a good game, but it’s marred by some very blatant flaws that would end up corrected by later games.

This is a short review because, spoiler alert, I personally did not like this installment. I know its popular in the fanbase but I just didn’t like it, don’t @ me. In fact I recommend this game, it’s not a bad game at all, I just didn’t like it and I want to try other games in the series now.

looking up Atelier Rorona plus makes me really sad bc i bought the trilogy and they didnt include the plus versions... :(
i mean if the three games were cheap and easy to get id sell the triology and get them but it seems like itd be a huge hassle unless i ordered them all from amazon would could add up to at least $50
idk i just really like the idea of an MP system maybe they changed that in Totori?? idk

I’ve been in gamer heaven for the past few weeks, so I’ve been lax on a lot of things (like keeping up with the posts of the blogs I follow and talking with @erotesianangel ; oops). Here’s a list of all the games I’m playing right now:
Final Fantasy XV (PS4) Final Fantasy III (DS) Atelier Totori Plus (Vita) (My second playthrough so I can get the best ending) Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (PSP/Vita) Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 2 (PS2) Minecraft (PC) (I’m always playing that, though :P )
I moved into a new place about a month ago, and the move has taken a lot out of me, especially combined with the extra day I was given at work. I’m starting to feel like I have time to relax at home, though (having last Thursday off and the snow storm on Tuesday helped). I’ve been trying to get back into working on my writing and game projects, which have been on hold for a long time due to the incredible stress I was feeling before the move.
For the past couple weeks, I’ve been helping a new friend of mine in moving down to the area. He’s been through a lot in the past few months and had a lot of people who offered to help him give up. Things are looking better as of today, but I’m still worried that we’re not in the clear, yet.
I really want to get Breath of the Wild, but I’m torn on whether or not I’m going to buy the Switch right away and if it’s worth waiting to buy the game for the newer console or not. Either way, my bank account is still recovering from buying the car in November, and the move certainly didn’t help. I’m hoping that my tax return, however meager, will help. When my vacation money comes through in my next paycheck (I didn’t take the vacation, just the extra pay), I should be able to get fully caught up on bills and set a bit aside. Rent at the new place is almost twice what I was paying before, but with the added day at work, I should still be able to treat myself once in a while.
So I guess that’s enough of a life update for now. I’m planning to start wearing hats a bit more (and maybe cutting my hair very short) to cover my hair (or, more accurately, lack of hair). I’m hoping that will boost my self-esteem/image issues enough for me to feel comfortable taking pictures of myself, again. I do have one new picture (I’ll leave it at the bottom of this post) but it’s nothing I’m too thrilled with. I’ve thought of maybe posting a few videos, maybe some singing. I just have to feel motivated, which isn’t happening, yet. I keep wanting to post more original content on here, even if it’s me just rambling about my rather uninteresting life. Maybe soon...

chazzzyf replied to your post “h ey guys if anyone has heard of the Atelier series specifically...”
I'd believe you, but I wouldn't know why, because I haven't played those games. So, what is it about him?
g od ur gonna regret asking m e
Slight spoilers!! s o for context Atelier has multiple endings and whoever’s events you see all of and has the right friendship level requirements is the ending you get (its added onto Bad, Normal, Good, True, Rich, or Pie ending) and  i got Iksel’s normal ending and the main protag Rorona goes on a trip to travel the world to study alchemy and...Iksel is really upset and clearly has a crush on her and im. dead
but anyways to Iksel!!! hes a chef whos already introduced to you as Rorona’s friend!! He’s hot headed, shy, and cares deeply about his work and got mad at Rorona when i won the title of cabbage girl. idk..what did it for me bc but i just fell in love??? i just love. his attitude so much and even tho he cares a bit too much about work he just hurts my heart. also when you take him to fight his healing skill is instantly making eggs and throwing them at you. i want him 2 kill me with them
he also shows up in Atelier Totori (the next game in the Arland Trilogy. Atelier games are broken up into 3 games per universe typically) and. im ready to die but i also know he doesnt have any endings so im like sad bc hes not a main character bc its about a whole new protag
also!!! if i was smart and got the good ending i could of had Rorona work at his restaurant with her and happily cry myself to sleep. but in Rorona Plus (an upgraded version of the game i got bc the original is B A D) theres an extra story and i. desperately hope hes in it im gonna do it today
its not a very long game and if u want i could go into how Atelier works bu t ive rambled enough about chef mcgee

Apparently, Atelier Arland games are coming to the Switch later this year!  Which is actually great.  I do enjoy those games, though because I have them on Vita, I’m weighing my options on whether or not to actually...get them.  Rorona Plus I could play again from scratch, as proven.  Meruru I could probably play again from scratch, because Meruru’s my favorite.  Totori?  I’d frankly rather tear of my arms than play Totori again from scratch.
But in this event, two things have happened.  One is a friend on Twitter asking if they’re good games, and the other is my wife asking if she can play them some time.  Both of which are dangerous questions.  I love these games, but are they good?  Arland specifically is a little too high on the fanservice scale for me.  I can safely say I like these games in spite of their horrific flaws.  So I really have no idea how other people would react, or if I should even encourage them to try.
That said, the if the Dusk trilogy gets ported to Switch LIKE IT DAMN WELL BETTER, then you’d best believe I will be yelling for everyone to play them.

I’m still completely baffled by how the Australian ratings agency ended up giving Atelier Totori Plus a hard R18+ rating.
Like seriously, the violence is all cartoonish and unrealistic, but somehow they ended up rating it at the highest level. Because I guess a teenage girl whacking monsters with a staff is basically the same thing as Manhunt.
Them ranking the sexual themes as 3/5 is a little more understandable, since there’s a scene where one of the characters basically admits to molesting Totori in her sleep, which is jarringly out of place and the game would’ve been better off without it, but it’s still just a throwaway mention in one scene. Unless they’re just intimidated by Melvia’s outfit I guess, which honestly wouldn’t surprise me at this point.
It’s not even an isolated incident either. Rorona Plus also got a R18+ rating, due to its supposed violence, which leads me to believe that the Australian ratings agency either consists of drunken lemurs, or Neptunia fans which can’t deal with the fact that Atelier is the vastly superior series.

Atelier Meruru Plus beat with the ending:
A Rich Nation
Gotta say I had a blast playing it completely blind. I ended up using the last year I had making weapons with Rainbow Power on all of them to make sure any new game + I did was much easier for me.
I also gotta say Airshatter was pretty easy if not a long boss for his constant healing himself. Though I guess having Meruru, Totori, and Mimi with 90+ Fire resist made that boss a cake walk.
Lots of fun overall, and I can’t wait to play it again for a different ending after I look up what the requirements are.
The only, ONLY, thing I regret is that I never could beat the Ent before this game ended. I did beat that dragon in the ruins to the east though, so I can at least smile about that.

Atelier Ayesha Plus Opinions
Those who remember my rankings will probably have noticed that I am a Dusk Trilogy fanboy.  The Arland trilogy got me into the series, and I greatly enjoy all of those games to a high degree, but the Dusk games are just on an entirely different level for me.  Ayesha is our starting point, and in terms of the number of times I shouted something like "Oh my god, this is so much better," I don't think any game has outdone it ever.  The improvements are many and significant, and if it weren’t for a few areas that I think Escha & Logy really got right, Ayesha would be the uncontested favorite.
CHARACTERS Ayesha has, in my humble opinion, the greatest cast of characters in the series I have experienced thus far.  Out of the entire cast, it says a lot that the only one I can think of that I dislike is at least treated like a goon.  I have a flat 0 complaints about the cast of this game.  Also, I don’t think any cast of playable characters has ever felt so relatable to me...
Ayesha - Ayesha is the best alchemist.  She can be a little spacey, but is good at her craft, sometimes a bit overly humble, but feels very...real?  Something about her opening cinematic being trying to juggle three responsibilities and trying her hardest to eat while synthesizing and commenting in a calm tone that no, she's about to freak out and break down is just...super relatable. And that's retained the entire game. She presents as a fairly composed individual, and it makes the moments of her expressing strong emotions stand out.  She also is an atypical alchemist, in that she doesn’t really identify as one at all.  She’s an apothecary who creates medicines, and just happens to use alchemy techniques to do so.  Also, fun fact: it took me forever to realize the weird hair curl above her right eye wasn't her eyebrow, so for the longest time I thought she just had this kinda smug "everyone is an idiot" look going on in every cutscene.  I’m kinda disappointed that this wasn’t the case, honestly.
Regina - Regina is a good.  I don't have strong feelings about her character, but she's a good friend, and a little silly, which does well when she's interacting with Ayesha.  She also stands out as someone who wants to get things done in her personal questlines, and seems to take her job seriously.  Being a mix between "would kick your ass" and "highly maternal in her own way" is a nice trait combination, and it makes her character feel more developed.
Wilbell - This game's best (human) girl.  Wilbell is a witch, and in this universe, witches are akin to alchemists.  Wilbell insists that alchemists are just ripping off what witches do, but they're essentially the same.  Her occupation makes for some interesting worldbuilding, and the idea that there are related crafts to alchemy is neat. Wilbell herself is very high-energy and childish, but is very eager to prove herself to her grandmother that she's a full-fledged witch.  She's endearing and fun, and a great addition to the cast.
Linca - Oh man, Linca.  So close to taking over for Wilbell.  Linca is...hard to explain.  She's stoic and strong, but also a complete dork.  She has no idea what to do in social situations, and just wants to stick with Marion, despite being frustrated by the things Marion will constantly ask her to do (example: make 100 friends, please take a regular bath, etc).  Her character is delightfully quirky, and has some interesting history as...some kind of clone?  It's hard to tell.  All we know is there are several Lincas, and she's one that was rescued by Marion.
Marion - I want you all to take a moment and acknowledge how every character so far is listed in recruitment order, and they’re all excellent female characters.  You can only bring three in a party at a time.  Do you see my frustration?  They’re all so good, and Marion is another excellent addition to an already unbelievable playable cast.  Marion is Linca's supervisor, but also a close friend. Marion is a high-strung working woman who just wants to catch a break. I...definitely feel that one.  She has a lot of contempt for "Central," basically the command center of the organization she works for, and feels things would run more smoothly if the smaller groups were able to run themselves effectively.
Juris - Juris is a hunter-man I expected to not care much for, but he winds up being pretty endearing in his own way.  He's very serious and down to earth, but in that kind of relatable way where he's laid-back and easy to get along with.  I have no strong love of this guy either, but he'sgood .
Odelia - Actual best girl, no contest.  Odelia is an automaton who watches over the cradle of knowledge; a storehouse of books from throughout the centuries, stockpiled here to preserve in the event of catastrophe.  Despite being a robot, Odelia does that excellent thing where her mannerisms and quirks feel very human, and she presents as more emotional than you may expect.  I mentioned before that people not understanding their own emotions was a character trait I adored. Robots who understand and learn feelings are the only trait on par.  I love that, and that's Odelia, essentially.
Nio - Nio is Ayesha’s sister, and is kind of a quirky goon.  I love it.  She’s a great source of entertainment, and has an excellent dynamic going with Ayesha.
There are several of the side-characters who wind up being great.  Harry is a delight in his antics, Ernie is a kindly friend for Ayesha, and even Ranun, who I generally dislike, gets a pass because everyone tells him to stop being a bum and get a real job.  Everyone in this game is great, which leads into the final piece...
Keithgriff - the teacher.  Keithgriff comes across as highly abrasive, much like Astrid.  He can come across as a bit of a dick, and I strongly disagree with his notion that knowledge should always be self-made (educating others is a valuable method of keeping humans advancing), but his stance is based on the idea that knowledge in the wrong hands is dangerous, and direct experience from someone with a good mindset is more critical than ensuring knowledge is spread for free.  Again, I don’t entirely agree, but it’s a fair stance, he just comes across as a grumpy old man about it.  It feels very different from Astrid, who is an asshole for no reason all the time, and in a way that makes him more likeable.  He's also a hugely important character, in terms of developing the world around you.  More on that in a bit. STORY The surface story is that Ayesha’s sister, Nio, went missing a while back and is presumed dead.  When you visit her grave, Nio suddenly appears, and a man named Keithgriff appears to explain that Nio is still alive, but only has about three years before she will definitely die.  You, Ayesha, must learn the secrets of the flowers scattered throughout the world, and unlock the secrets of alchemy in order to save her.  Much like Totori, it’s a fairly strong motivator, but it’s more consistent throughout the story.  There’s a frequent reminder that Nio is out there and what your goal is supposed to be, with a lot more emphasis placed on both Ayesha’s desperation to save her sister, and the need for alchemy specifically to be what saves her.  But as I said, this is the surface story.  There’s a lot going on in the background that is just a delight.
SETTING The setting for Ayesha is, I would argue, its strongest point.  The background story of this game is about the world itself, and focuses heavily on the impacts that alchemy has had on the environment.  There are small scenes throughout, such as Keith explaining how alchemy once turned an ocean into the barren wastelands to the west.  Keith’s emphasis on alchemists needing to seek their own knowledge, and his belief that knowledge in improper hands will result in catastrophe, which is why he’s gone out of his way to destroy relics of the past to erase easy access to knowledge some people shouldn’t have.  As for the impact it had, that would be what they call the Dusk.
The Dusk, at this point, is ill-defined, but you can get an understanding of roughly how it works.  It’s an environmental problem on a global scale.  Because of misuse of alchemy in the past, the environment has suffered tremendously, and while it can heal, the cinematic in Vierzeburg upon arrival comments that the city has survived many Dusks, which means this is a recurring cycle.  The problems in the environment aren’t going away, and they’re a massive problem for humans.  Significant enough that a location like the Zweiteturm exists.
The Zweiteturm is, bar none, the coolest place in all of Atelier thus far.  It’s a giant library filled with the collected knowledge of all humanity.  Its existence is just a neat thing at first, but you later learn that its presence is entirely as a safeguard.  If the Dusk happens, and for some reason humans can’t weather the problem and are largely wiped out, their collected knowledge will at least remain, potentially to be used again one day.  The being that captured Nio is the guardian of the other cradle: the Cradle of Life, which is designed to house all forms of life within itself for the same purpose.  If the Dusk wipes things out, at least the cradle of life will have a backup to be used when a solution is found.  The impact and significance of the Dusk is portrayed wonderfully through the various settings in this world, and I absolutely adore how well you get a sense for the severity of this phenomenon.  Keith’s storyline also adequately demonstrates how these crises are human-made, and adds a level of significance to the act of performing alchemy that wasn’t present in previous games.  In particularly, it presents the things that alchemy has made, which in this game, includes Slags and Homunculi.
Slags are your primary enemies in this game, and the implication is that they were created for manual labor to help humans.  They work in the Zweiteturm, and are generally helpful until a malfunction causes them all to go haywire and they attack people.  You also have the Slag Dragon thing in Keith’s quest, which suggests that some Slags were created more as weapons, and exist to destroy, with an almost escalation of arms by creating stronger and stronger Slags.  With the implication that the ancient civilizations were in conflict with one another, this well may be the case.
The other is Homunculi, and they are more ambiguous.  They’re these adorable, friendly creatures that absolutely love “Sparkles.”  Sparkles are candy.  They just love it.  They’re also effectively immortal.  They die periodically, but are instantly brought back to life somehow, creating a sort of automatic reincarnation cycle.  There’s a small village of these things off to the west, but ultimately they don’t seem to impact the plot much.  They’re just around, and implied to be a creation of alchemy rather than a natural species. And because of their seemingly eternal nature, it doesn’t seem like they reproduce, and the ones that exist may well have been made centuries ago.  It’s an interesting race to introduce, considering that these were created for a purpose, certainly, but with the loss of the ancient civilization, likely due to the Dusk, the Homunculi are roaming free and still built their own society.  It’s pretty interesting to see how these created races have developed throughout time and what they do without their creators.
ALCHEMY SYSTEM Ayesha’s system is very different from the Arland games.  You get a few alchemy skills, which can be interesting to use, but don’t add a ton.  One of your skills is being able to transfer properties, something you did for free in previous games, so I’m not as big a fan.  You can use each skill only once during alchemy, so use them wisely.  You also have another major change, in that ingredients have static properties.  Gone are the days of randomized properties on everything.  On the one hand, this is kinda nice.  If you need a property, you know exactly where to get it, and the rest is figuring out the synthesis chain that will get it where it needs to go.  On the other hand, it can make some things really difficult, as you’re no longer able to rely on having a billion items to work with all having different properties, so one of them must go right into the synthesis you want.  It requires a lot more synthesis chaining than previous games as a result, I feel.  This is far from a bad thing, but it is a significant change.
The exploration items are back, including the ability to travel faster, hold more items, etc.  I’m really glad to see these things make a return, because I love using these kinds of items.  Having them carried over in NG+ is also just a huge benefit.
BATTLE SYSTEM Now here we have a Totori-esque setup, in that enemies are tough, and you will be relying on items pretty much forever.  Ayesha is a healer by trade, which is a facet I adore.  I love playing as the healer, and having Ayesha’s main role being to use healing items for others is a blessing.  Equipment has significance, but again, it’s like Totori in that the significance is minor.  You can make equipment significant, in that you can boost skill damage to ludicrous amounts, but that’s about it.  The real interesting thing is the superbosses.  Skills do not damage them much, regardless of the power you pack, and they often have their own skills that can blast your party into powder.  So what’s the way to win?  Stall battle.  Honestly, it’s not a ton of fun, but conceptually, it’s beautiful.  Ayesha’s a healer, so the way to win against these impossible odds is to simply have the strongest healing potential you can.  Your skills will make shorter work of the fight, but each superboss takes 30 minutes to an hour to beat, because you deal so little and they have so much going on.  Unlimited healing is your only way to win, which is conceptually fantastic.  The problem is, these enemies tend to have methods that will still wipe your party if you’re not careful or are unlucky.  That’s what I take issue with more than anything.  If my answer is a stall battle that will take 45 minutes per boss, at least have the decency to make sure I will not lose if I’ve set everything up properly so this doesn’t get annoying.  Shortening the fights would also help...
Battle is also altered, in that there’s a circle formation around enemies now, instead of going face to face.  This allows for things like back attacks, and positioning your allies to either set up follow-up attacks, or spreading out so that enemies with smaller AoE attacks can’t hit everyone at once.  It’s a neat system, though I can’t say I used it all that often to its proper effect.
Now, the real big change is in how you make equipment.  Instead of forging them, you use whetstones for weapons you find, and dyes for armors.  That’s right, find.  Weapons and armors drop from enemies, with higher-level enemies dropping higher-level gear.  You can apply the whetstones or dyes to them in order to transfer properties, or to improve quality to the level of the item applied.  These items are also fabulously cheap by comparison, and you can synthesize several at once.  What this results in is a delightful shift away from picking two other characters and rocking that party all game to avoid bankruptcy, into being able to apply a cheap whetstone to everyone so the whole party is outfitted, and can be used in combat interchangeably.  This makes it a lot easier to test out party members to find out which ones you like best, and gives you the ability to build friendship ratings much more easily because everyone is combat viable now.  It’s a very welcome and wonderful change, with the only real issue being obtaining the items in the first place.  Thankfully, late game, a high-level enemy that’s easy to beat shows up as a group, and you can easily farm the best weapons and armor sets in about 20-30 minutes, no issue.
OTHER MECHANICS Ayesha has a memory system that allows you to spend accumulated points from major plot events, completed requests, and just talking to people, on gaining specific bonuses.  Some bonuses will be stats, others will be in getting additional synthesis items, etc.  There are a lot of great benefits, but you generally can’t afford much until later in the game, so you have to be rather selective at first.
The only other thing I can think to mention is requests.  Random people in different towns will ask you for things, and you get a time limit to complete them.  Completing them in that time nets you the rewards, but taking too long results in losing out on at least parts of rewards.  You can stall the timer, though, by not talking to people.  So it becomes this interesting game of whether or not you feel like you’re in a position to fill the next request these people might ask for.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS I am in no position to really talk about art direction in an intelligent way, because I know virtually nothing of art theory, but the change in artistic style in the Dusk trilogy is fantastic and I adore it.
Also this may be something unique to me, but the Notes system outright lied to me.  I had to find one more flower to finish the hunt for Nio, and I could not for the life of my find it.  I checked notes, and all it said for flowers was to check the temples.  So that’s what I did.  It wasn’t there.  I later stumbled upon the correct path by accident, but how bad is it that your hints are lying to you?  For a while, this game ranked below a few Arland games because of this, as it has a very strong Totori-vibe in the negative sense.  Fortunately, I found it in my heart to forgive, in part because I would’ve found the flower easily if I hadn’t completely forgotten to explore a segment of the map.
CONCLUDING THOUGHTS Atelier Ayesha is amazing.  This game is such a drastic change from the Arland setup, and I feel like it’s improved in every way.  The biggest adjustment is, by far, an emphasis on the location you live in as well as the over-arching theme of seeking the truth and the inherent dangers of misusing the powers of alchemy.  It’s the level of heavy backstory against a fairly upbeat cast that really hooks me.  I love Atelier Ayesha so much, and this game got me so hyped up for the Dusk trilogy it’s unreal.  I have not often gotten this excited about games, but wow did this one ever captivate me.
If you enjoyed this (for some reason), consider checking out the write-ups for the other games in the series as well!
