you know i just typed a paragraph about it and then deleted it but in far fewer words I fucking hate the trope of women characters in traditional fantasy who are clearly intended to be empowering to SOME members of the audience by merit of the fact that they wield some secondhand power over like magic or dragons or a politician or something all while still embodying this sexy nonthreatening mystically-beautiful divine femininity. so the writer has fulfilled their feminism quota by inventing a woman whose entire character could easily be eclipsed in artistic merit by rachel platten's hit single fight song to the exact same emotional effect, and much of their audience is satisfied by this, so we as the dissatisfied reader have no hope in hell of getting to take in a woman character who can heft a sword or be big and muscular or god forbid do anything interesting with her gender. and trans characters of any kind? FORGET about it. not gonna happen. this fantasy is someone else's fantasy and it won't let you forget it.
neeeeed ppl to not be so afraid hc characters over like. 25. i’m sorry but from srtt onwards y’all gotta start admitting some of these characters are in their 30s. you will never be able to convince me that kinzie and the dewynter sisters are anything but 30-32. pierce and johnny gotta be in their early 30s by srtt. if you look me in the eyes and say asha odekar is like 23 i’m gonna smack you
Context: (a) This transformation trend has primarily been used for showing of traditional/ethnic group dress. (b) A stereotype about Sichuan men is that they do the cooking.
To begin the last pair of our Solo Dates, we get to congratulate our known winner, Julian Vance! 🥹
After their long discussions on the beauty of Komorebi and their lucky chance to finally visit the mountain, Daniel thought there’d be no better way to entertain our intrepid Mr. Vance than with a relaxing and educational walk around historical Senbamachi!
Begging yall to keep Pigsy's characterization in your freenoodles content
Yes, he's a sweetheart and madly in love with Tang, but that doesn't change the fact that he's still a grumpy middle aged man and Will React As Such. More grumpy middle aged man Pigsy characterization please, it's very important
nobody cares, but i am actually willing to defend and just like that for the following reasons:
it's one of few reboots that i actually find justifiable, since the original series followed the lives of four women within the context of modern relationship dynamics (the fact that Samantha isn't in the reboot is a big fail, but Kim Cattrall has her reasons not to participate and I respect that)
the scenes that read like wikihow listicles on how to be woke (for instance the saree scene) actually aren't a new addition to the canon, since the original satc was also a how to guide to life in the city (which was also stated explicitly at one point), and a lot of it is about figuring out the rules of relationships and modern life
people just now noticing that they're all very wealthy women is insane to me. maybe their wealth as single women 25 years ago is easier to romanticise, but they were rich women from the beginning
che diaz is a good choice (fight me). they behave extremely shittily towards miranda, which does infuriate me, but what made the original series so special is that the characters weren't morally black or white, they are very human. and i was pleasantly surprised by the fact that they weren't portrayed as a perfect angel and the posterchild of their identity like many lgbtq characters have to be in media. so i hate them but i will defend them
on that note: miranda's changing sexuality and her mid-life crisis aren't that shocking, and she is the perfect character through which the show can explore sex- and loveless marriages, alcoholism, the feeling of dissatisfaction with one's own life, and many other things. the reboot doesn't show these women's happy perfect lives, because that would be boring, and, suprise suprise, life is still complicated after you get married and have kids.
charlotte's kids are spoiled upper class brats? yeah no shit
when people complain about the reboot not having the same vibe as the original series, i think that they're missing the point. it can't have the same snappy wit as the first three seasons (which is both easier to turn into a meme/iconic moment (btw i love those scenes to death, i'm not criticising them)) because their lives are different, but also satc had already evolved past that; the later seasons did explore longer story lines, and we watched the women grow and tap into their emotions and build relationships over longer periods of time;
That being said, I will always remember the original much more fondly and will continue to rewatch it and revisit it, whereas I doubt that I will form the same kind of connection to the reboot.
Personally I believe there's not rly a good way for an artist to interact in depth w the fans of their work. You have to draw a line between yourself and them, you have to be a little bit of a hermit. I just don't think it's healthy to immerse yourself too deeply in what other people think of your work, neither is it constructive. Additionally, many artists have limited experience with the way fandom works online and will have a hard time with boundaries or understanding unusual interpretations or subcultures. As someone whos been on tumblr for time immemorial I know that the best way to enjoy something is to do it by yourself or w a small circle of friends and let the fandom at large alone. And if I do interact w a larger fandom ik how to live and let live. I think a lot of artists don't have that skill. They just need to keep out of fandom. It's not good for them.
Incredibly and unfathomably emo about Maria and Adeline lately so idk what to do about that (take a wild guess as to what in fact I will do about that.)
you know what gets me is people who say stuff like “i want to see more appreciation for argyle/lucas/[any poc character in any media really]” okay, it’s easy: appreciate them. be as loud about your love for them as you are about the other characters you like. saying this isn’t going to magically make it appear in front of you, you kind of have to curate the experience you want to see and that may involve creating the content you notice is lacking, but at the very least involves reblogging it. idk sometimes seeing stuff like that reads more like “give me fandom brownie points for complaining about the uneven appreciation of poc vs white characters without putting in the effort to uplift those poc characters myself” feels performative as hell
Let's play a fun game of Did This Person Actually Do Something Bad Enough To Deserve A Public Call Out Or Do You Just Have Unconfronted Bigotry Against Them For Unrelated Reasons And This Thing They Did Is Just An Excuse For You To Justify Your Hatred For Them.
So the Legendary Cookies seem to usually have one of two origins. They are either created artificially, usually of the elements they represent (Wind Archer Cookie, Moonlight Cookie, Millennial Tree Cookie), or they were once regular Cookies who through some means, were reborn into these more powerful forms (Fire Spirit Cookie, Timekeeper Cookie, Dark Enchantress Cookie, Frost Queen Cookie)
The dragons and Black Pearl seem to be exceptions to this rule, though the dragons are their own thing, and I’m not sure what the deal is with Black Pearl. I mean I know she used to be a normal mermaid and is somehow more powerful now, but I’m not sure it’s entirely clear how she achieved that. But whatever, that’s not my point
My question is: which of these categories does Sea Fairy Cookie fall into? Because as far as I know, she’s the one Legendary whose origin is never explained. The farthest back I think her origins go is her getting cursed, but I think that was only that she’d freeze should she let go of her sword, not that she became the sea or anything
